Following the firing of former manager Carlos Mendoza and yet another loss on Friday, the Mets finally got back in the win column on Saturday. It was the first for Andy Green since taking over as interim manager as New York defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2.

The two teams close out their series on Sunday at 1:40 pm ET.

Prior to their game on Saturday, the New York Mets announced they reinstated Christian Scott from the 15-day injured list and optioned left-handed pitcher Zach Thornton to Triple-A Syracuse.

First reported by The Athletic’s Will Sammon, infielder Jorge Polanco began a rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. He went 0-for-3.

Per the transaction wire, following being designated for assignment, and after clearing waivers, infielder Zack Short has been outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

Anne Rogers of MLB.com reported that right-handed pitcher Cole Ragans will officially undergo surgery on July 1. The surgery will tell the full extent of the injury and bringing clarification on how long the Kansas City Royals’ pitcher will miss.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that first baseman Carlos Santana is signing a minor-league contract with the Atlanta Braves. Santana, who is 40 years old, was recently released by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Chicago Cubs announced a plethora of roster moves on Saturday:

• Bryse Wilson was added to the 26-man roster.
• Jayden Murray was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
• Hoby Milner was placed on the 15-day injured list (appendicitis)
• Tyler Ferguson was recalled from Triple-A.

Jorge Castillo of ESPN reported that the Philadelphia Phillies signed Tommy Pham to a minor league deal.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced that they placed outfielder Jesus Sánchez on the injured list with a right ankle sprain. Outfielder Yohendrick Piñango was recalled in his place.

Jose Buttó showcased his prowess on the mound, pitching six strong innings with 91 pitches and nine strikeouts, largely relying on his effective changeup. Supported by Adam Ottavino, Brooks Raley, and Edwin Díaz, the Mets’ bullpen limited the Royals to just three hits and kept them scoreless with runners in scoring position. Although Vinnie Pasquantino homered for Kansas City in the ninth inning, it wasn’t enough to alter the outcome. Diaz’s save would be his first home save of the season, and his first save at Citi Field since 2022.

On the offensive side, Cole Ragans and the Royals bullpen contained the Mets for most of the game. In the fourth inning, Starling Marte tried to score on a fly ball, but left fielder MJ Melendez threw him out at the plate. Catcher Salvador Perez was injured in a collision with Marte and was forced to leave the game.

Despite a promising opportunity in the seventh inning, the Mets couldn’t capitalize. Singles by pinch hitter Brett Baty and lead-off hitter Brandon Nimmo in the seventh inning as well as a walk to Marte loaded the bases for Francisco Lindor, who had not driven in a runner in scoring position yet this season. That trend continued as he fouled out to Royals first baseman Pasquantino near the Mets dugout, keeping the game tied at zero.

However, they broke through in the eighth inning against Royals reliever Chris Stratton. Pete Alonso‘s lead-off walk led to him being moved over with a bunt by Tyrone Taylor. This bunt set the stage for Jeff McNeil and Brett Baty to load the bases with two outs.

Harrison Bader then delivered a crucial infield hit, driving in the Mets’ first run with a well-placed swinging bunt to third base, followed by Brandon Nimmo drawing a bases-loaded walk for the second run. Before this, the Mets had struggled with runners in scoring position until that pivotal moment in the eighth inning.

The New York Mets offense looks to keep rolling for one more game against the Kansas City Royals as the Mets seek to clinch a series win. Yesterday, the Mets were able to score seven runs, fueled by Pete Alonso’s two home run and three-hit day, but everything else fell apart and the Mets lost, 11-7.

This afternoon is also Dwight Gooden’s jersey retirement ceremony as the Mets continue a recent tradition over the last couple of seasons of recognizing the great players who have made their mark in the organization’s history.

Jose Buttó has rejoined the Mets’ organization. Buttó barely lost the rotation spot at the start of the season to Tylor Megill as both players had dominant springs. Because of roster rules, Buttó could not be recalled until earlier this week. He was able to make a spot start for the Mets during the first week of the season due to the Mets doubleheader against the Tigers as the 27th man.

During that start, he allowed one run via three hits and three walks while striking out six batters in six innings of work.

The only member of the Royals who has seen Buttó in a major league game is Garrett Hampson (1-for-2).

The Mets’ bats will have their work cut out for them this afternoon as they face off against Cole Ragans. Over three starts this season, Ragan has allowed five runs from 16 hits over 17 1/3 innings (2.60 ERA, 2.61 FIP, 1.269 WHIP, 162 ERA+). He looked a lot more human in his last start against the Astros allowing three runs on ten hits over five innings.

The Mets announced prior to the game that they’ve recalled pitchers Jose Buttó and Grant Hartwig. In a corresponding move, they have optioned pitchers Tyler Jay and Cole Sulser.

Three Things To Watch For

1. Pete Alonso’s 200th home run: While it’s unlikely to happen today, a milestone home run No. 200 is in reach for Alonso. He had two homers in Saturday’s game, bringing him to 198 for his career. Alonso has played 698 career games. Ryan Howard reached this mark in 658 games and Aaron Judge took 671 games. Pete Alonso is trying to beat out the legendary Ralph Kiner (706 games).
2. Fundamentals and luck. The game fell apart for the Mets in the fourth inning on Saturday when Starling Marte dropped a fly ball and then later Brandon Nimmo knocked a ball over the fence while trying to make a leaping play. Francisco Lindor also was unable to tag Garrett Hampson on a bizarre play on the base paths. It’s baseball and random things will happen from time to time. On Saturday those events defined the game. Hopefully, the Mets play with tighter fundamentals today cutting down the chances for another bizarre game.
3. Edwin Díaz: It has been a while since we have seen the most electric closer in baseball. For the first week or so of the season the Mets had to use Díaz every other day because the bullpen was stretched so thin. As the Mets haven’t played a close game in a while, he’s gotten an extended rest.
