On the way to sweeping the Marlins on the road, the Mets scored a combined 31 runs. However, on the flip side, they also gave up a combined 23 runs in a series heavy on offense.

The offense saved the day on Wednesday when bad pitching led to a huge blown lead, and nearly another late in the game. As a result of the sweep, the Mets are no longer in last place in the NL East. Furthermore, they’ve now won eight of their last 11 games.

On that note, let’s dive into another edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

Juan Soto by Berto Carlo

3 UP

FLASHES OF PROMISE

We got another long-awaited glimpse at Jonah Tong. The young pitcher was called back up and got the start on Monday. He showed some good and bad. The good was seven strikeouts over four innings. The bad was four earned runs allowed on four hits. What is important to note, however, is that Tong recovered after giving up a three-run homer, allowing just two baserunners over his final three innings. In short, there’s plenty to work with Tong, but he showed enough to be encouraged about.

BACK ON THE HORSE

We talked about A.J. Ewing waking up from his slumber last time out, but it is worth talking about again. Because since then, the rookie has continued to show plenty at the plate. He went a combined 7-for-13 with two runs scored and five RBIs in the Miami series. That’s what you call snapping a skid. It is also encouraging that Ewing was able to work through his struggles, make the necessary adjustments, and come through it. That’s a huge positive.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION

Boy, the bats were red-hot in this series. The Mets scored a combined 31 runs across the three games. They also got contributions from up and down the lineup. Juan Soto had three RBIs and three walks in the series. Francisco Lindor hit two home runs with four RBIs. Carson Benge and Bo Bichette continue to contribute at a high clip. Then, in the series finale, Ewing, Brett Baty, Christopher Morel, and Luis Torrens combined for 10 hits, seven runs scored, and 10 RBIs. Baty continues to show why the Mets are reluctant to give up on him, while Jared Young also stayed hot in Miami. All in all, while there is work to be done, the building blocks of a potent offense appear to be in place.

3 DOWN

HEART ATTACK BASEBALL

The Mets put us all through it on Wednesday. On what was Opening Night in the NFL, the Mets and the Marlins combined to put up a football score. While the offense stepped up, the pitching did not. Chris Devenski was charged with five runs to help blow an 8-0 lead. Three more relievers then combined to allow another six earned runs as the Mets nearly blew another huge lead in the ninth. Thankfully, the team held on, but there is certainly plenty of work that needs to be done in the offseason when it comes to the bullpen.

FADING FAST

Sean Manaea continues to generate confusion. The lefty owned a perfect game through five innings on Tuesday, before imploding in the sixth. The end result was four earned runs allowed on five hits. Manaea has seemingly hit a wall with 23 earned runs and seven home runs allowed over his last five starts alone. More importantly, Manaea really struggles the deeper he gets into games, and that would suggest that maybe his days as an effective starter are indeed over.

BLACK HOLE

Let’s remind you that the Mets scored 31 runs in this series. With that in mind, Francisco Alvarez contributed just one of those runs. The catcher struck out a combined three times over just two games, and his struggles have gone on for a prolonged stretch now. He is hitting just .148/.200/.279/.479 with 30 strikeouts over his last 18 games. Those are some ugly stats, and there has to be some real concern over Alvarez going forward.

The Mets handed out five promotions over the last two days. Émilien Pitre advanced to Triple-A Syracuse Sunday when the Peña and Morel moves were announced as well. On Monday, Amick was told to pack for Syracuse and infielder Jamari Baylor earned his way to Double-A.

Peña, who will turn 19 in October, hit .271/.388/.397 with eight homers and 44 RBIs in 96 games and 439 plate appearances for Low-A St. Lucie. He stole 28 bases in 37 attempts. He needs work on defense. He committed 25 errors in 87 starts at shortstop.

Amick, acquired from the Twins with Bruin Agbayani in the trade of A.J. Minter, caught fire on arrival. He went 14-for-46 with seven homers, a double and 22 RBIs for the Rumble Ponies. He hit 23 homers for Double-A Wichita before the trade and his slash line for the two Double-A teams combined is .228/.345/.521. The 23-year-old was a second-round pick in the 2024 draft out of the University of Tennessee.

Morel, 27, was signed in July five days after the Marlins released him. He hit 12 homers and slashed .321/.382/.716 in 31 games with Syracuse. MMO’s Mathias Altman-Kurosaki covered Morel’s promotion here.

Pitre, 23, picked up with pitcher Gary Gill Hill and outfielder Aidan Smith from the Rays in the Freddy Peralta deal, went 15-for-40 with a .761 OPS in 10 games with Binghamton. He hit .323/.451/.492 with three homers in 37 games for Double-A Montgomery before he was traded. He was also a second round pick in the 2024 draft, taken out of the University of Kentucky.

Baylor, 25, started the year in an independent league and played 17 games for St. Lucie (four homers, .842 OPS) before being moved up to Brooklyn, where he slashed .256/.427/.422 with three homers over 31 games before earning this second promotion.

Morel’s major league career got off to a promising start in 2022, when he clubbed 16 homers in 425 plate appearances for the Cubs. He took a big step forward in 2023, batting .247/.313/.508 with 26 homers in 429 plate appearances, and his 50% hard-hit and 16% barrel rate ranked in the majors’ 92nd and 95th percentiles, respectively. However, Morel’s numbers took a dip in 2024, and the Cubs traded him to the Rays in exchange for Isaac Paredes. Morel struggled mightily in Tampa Bay, posting just a .632 OPS with a negative 1.1 bWAR in 495 plate appearances. Morel was designated for assignment after the 2025 season and eventually non-tendered.

Morel signed with the Marlins before the 2026 season but was placed on the injured list with an oblique injury before Opening Day. When he returned, he went just 11-for-68 with three extra-base hits before getting released on June 26. The Mets signed him to a minor league deal five days later. While his numbers look ugly, Morel still boasts impressive bat speed at an average of 75.6 mph and has the ability to play multiple positions. In the majors, he has played every position except pitcher and catcher. This season in Triple-A, he has played first, second and third base, as well as both corner outfield positions.

He homered again on Saturday, his 12th since joining the organization on July 1. He has a staggering 1.098 OPS with the team.

Mauricio crushed his 14th Triple-A homer of the season. He has struggled in August though, posting a .222 average and .709 OPS.

The Binghamton offense continues to roll. Four Rumble Ponies had multiple hits. Leading the way was Voit, who reached base five times, Reimer, who reached base four times, and Jefferson, who reached base three times and drove in two runs.

Voit now has a 1.270 OPS since being promoted from Brooklyn. Rojas, a top-100 prospect in baseball, has his Double-A OPS raised to .811. Lastly, Reimer has been in a groove since returning from injury as he has raised his OPS by 20 points over the last week-and-a-half.

• RHP Gabe Davis: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 4 SO (4.26 ERA)

• RHP Bryce Jenkins: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO (1.80 ERA)

Davis, listed at 6-foot-9, made his second start with the orgination and only lasted 3 1/3 innings. An error and control issues forced an elevated pitch count and he was removed after 65 pitches. He did only allow a single hit, no runs, and struck out four.

The trio of Armbruester, Guzman, and Jenkins all impressed lowering their respective, sparkling Double-A ERAs.

TRIPLE-A: SYRACUSE METS

HITTER OF THE MONTH: CHRISTOPHER MOREL

Statistics: 20 G, .318/.400/.636/1.036, 5 HR, 6 2B, 13 RBI, 9 BB, 18 SO

Do you remember that the Mets have Christopher Morel? Signed as a minor league free agent on July 1, Morel was sent straight to Syracuse and started mashing. He’s got pop, and he made a decent bit of non-homer contact this month too. This also doesn’t include his three-home-run game from August 2, either, so he’s really been productive in Triple-A since joining the organization.

The story with Morel has always been the same: When at his best, he can be a good major league hitter who makes loud contact. When at his worst, he can’t make contact. The Marlins saw his worst this season when he struck out 38.4% of the time in 22 big league games, ultimately leading to his release. His strikeout rate was only 24% in July, which is definitely an improvement, but it’s still against Triple-A pitching. At this point, we need to see it in the majors to believe there’s any real change. He has also never been able to find a defensive home, and has split his time between the two corner infield spots for Syracuse. Maybe he gets a chance at some point if there’s an injury, but I don’t know how likely it is.

PITCHER OF THE MONTH: JONAH TONG

Jonah Tong needed this. After putting up perhaps the best season of any minor league pitcher in 2025 and even earning a big league look, Tong’s taken a substantial step back in 2026. He’s walking too many hitters (a consequence of just not throwing enough strikes) and getting hit more. The new pitches he’s been working on just haven’t been as effective as they need to be. July was at least a step in the right direction.

Is he back? I don’t think I’m willing to say that yet. His K-BB% in July was almost exactly the same as it has been all year, so there is a possibility he just got more fortunate batted ball luck. With that said, it’s at least encouraging to see nonetheless. His last two starts suggest there could be a real improvement, giving up one earned run over 9 and 2/3 innings with an improved K-BB%. Most of those gains came from strikeouts, though, as he still walked 15% of batters. That’s just too high.

Jonathan Santucci. Photo by Binghamton Rumble Ponies

It was a great bounce-back month for Noah Hall, who was having a tough season repeating High-A. It’s really hard to get much better allowing a single earned run and just nine hits in 23 and 1/3 innings. Hall’s biggest issue is he doesn’t throw enough strikes for someone who sits around 90-91 mph, and while he made slight improvements in July, they weren’t big enough to feel truly encouraged by. He’s also finally up to Double-A to start August.

Luis Severino was fantastic on the mound for New York, throwing 102 pitches and striking out ten. He did not allow a run and held Chicago to only three hits.

Behind Severino, the Mets’ bullpen allowed two runs. The damage came via a Christopher Morel two-run home run off Dedniel Núñez. In the ninth inning, Drew Smith and Jake Diekman had to get the job done as Edwin Díaz was ejected after a sticky substance check before throwing a pitch.

With the victory, the best team in the majors during June improved to 37-39 on the season. The Mets are 1.0 game back of the last wild card spot. They have gone seven-straight series without dropping one.

On Deck

The Mets are off tomorrow for a travel day back home and will host the New York Yankees on Tuesday for the first game of the Subway Series. The probable pitching matchup for the first game of the series at Citi Field is David Peterson (3-0, 3.97 ERA) toes the slab for the Mets while Gerrit Cole (0-0, 4.50 ERA) starts for the Yankees.

It was another demoralizing day at the home office on Wednesday. The Giants beat the Braves 4-1 and the only run support the Mets got was from former teammate, J.D. Davis, keeping NY 1/2 ahead of Atlanta in the NL East.

David Peterson dug himself into a deep hole walking the first three batters he faced – all a strike away from a better outcome. After fanning Patrick Wisdom on seven pitches, the forlorn lefty surrendered back-to-back two-run doubles on four pitches to Yan Gnomes and P.J. Higgins.

Reliever Trevor Williams put Peterson out of his misery, but couldn’t get out the next two batters, Michael Hermosillo and Nelson Velazquez, who greeted him with an RBI double and single on 90-something four-seam fastballs. And as is always the way when it’s not going your way, he fanned David Bote and Christopher Morel after the damage was done.

Cubs starter Drew Smyly, given a six-run cushion, sailed through the bottom of the first, winning an eight-pitch battle against Brandon Nimmo on a swinging strike three sinker, popping up Mark Canha on a knuckle curve – leaving Francisco Lindor at the plate looking and swinging through a trio of what was served to Canha.

Williams picked up where he left off in the top of the second fanning Seiya Suzuki, Franmil Reyes, and Wisdom on four-seamers, making me wish that the former Cub took the mound from the start.

The bright spot in the sea of darkness was the Mets bullpen that shut down Chicago for the remainder of the game. Unfortunately, the Mets’ anemic bats were out in full force, albeit solo home runs from Tomás Nido in the third and Pete Alonso in the ninth – the only other run coming off of a fielding error in the fifth.

After losing a host of games against ball clubs way below .500, head shaking has replaced high fives – even the almighty Jacob deGrom couldn’t find a way to stop the bleeding.

With a four-game series against the Pirates coming up next on the docket, there should be a sense of giddiness among Mets fans that they were gifted a schedule that favored their favorite team. But there are no gimmes when prolific players are flailing and the likes of Daniel Vogelbach, Darin Ruf and rookie prospect Mark Vientos aren’t going to save this sinking ship.
