After Charlotte had built a 2-0 lead in the first two innings, the Mets erased that deficit in the bottom of the third thanks to the top of their lineup. José Azocar began the inning with a double. Later in the inning, after a Jett Williams walk, Drew Gilbert delivered a game-tying RBI double (Young RBI groundout drove in first run).

Gilbert went 2-for-4 on the night with a hit-by-pitch and picked up his second multi-hit performance in the last four games. He was one of five players in the Syracuse lineup to have multiple hits on an evening where the team had 13 hits (Williams was also 2-for-4).

Syracuse would take the lead in the fourth, thanks to a solo shot by Carlos Cortes (his 16th of the year). The 27-year-old has six home runs in September and has homered twice in the last four games (five RBIs in that stretch).

Azocar would help pad onto the lead in the sixth with a two-run home run. He has homered in back-to-back games and has nine RBIs in the last four days. The lead would get stretched to 6-2 in the seventh thanks to Gilbert’s second RBI double of the night.

However, Syracuse was unable to hold onto the lead. All six pitchers that appeared for the Mets allowed at least one earned run. Matt Gage allowed a three-run home run to Colson Montgomery in the top of the eighth.

Despite Syracuse adding an insurance run in the eighth on a Wyatt Young RBI double, Charlotte completed the comeback against Grant Hartwig, with Hartwig walking multiple hitters with the bases loaded.

In the 10th, it was Tyler Zuber who ended up allowing the go-ahead runs on a Michael Chavis RBI double and an infield single by Tim Elko. Although the Mets got a run back on an Azocar sacrifice fly, JT Schwartz hit into a double play to end the game.

If there was one bright spot for the Syracuse pitching staff, it was Joey Lucchesi. Lucchesi came in out of the bullpen after Max Kranick made the start and did a decent job. The left-hander went four innings, allowed one run on five hits, walked a batter, and struck out three on 61 pitches (39 strikes).

The Syracuse lineup got a boost to it on Wednesday with the return of Brett Baty. Baty played his first game since August 22 after being out due to a fractured finger. The results were not great with Baty going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Propelled by a big game from Carlos Cortes, the Syracuse Mets beat SWB 7-4 on Saturday. A four-run fifth-inning put the Mets up 5-4 but then they allowed the game-tying run to score in the top of the eighth.

That’s when Cortes stepped up and launched his eighth long ball of the year, breaking the tie and ultimately giving Syracuse their fourth-straight win.

Tidwell did not have his best stuff Saturday and has gotten roughed up since his promotion to Triple-A in May. While his conventional ERA is at a shaky 5.35, his 7.77 FIP is even worse. Since coming to Syracuse, his K/9 has dropped significantly, while BB/9 and HR/9 have skyrocketed. Utility-man Justin Jarvis was much better for the Mets on Saturday, providing solid middle relief after starting his last outing on July 3.

In his second appearance since being traded from the Dodgers organization, Matt Gage inherited a first and third jam in the ninth inning and picked up the save without conceding a run. The Johnstown, New York native has an accumulative 3.97 ERA on the season, though he has not allowed a run while with Syracuse.

Behind Luis Moreno‘s seven scoreless innings, the Rumble Ponies offense put up four runs via a Jeremiah Jackson two-run homer and a New Hampshire throwing error.

The Cyclones struggled offensively again in their 3-2 loss to the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Brooklyn collected only five hits, and their only runs came on a second-inning home run from Omar De Los Santos, who is not known for his power.

Along with De Los Santos and Paz, who collected two hits and two stolen bases, Wilfredo Lara was a bright spot for the Cyclones. With his two hits on Saturday, he has 11 in 11 games with a .871 OPS.

The longball carried Syracuse to an extra-inning win over Buffalo. On the very first pitch of the game, the Mets were providing power; Luisangel Acuña tallied his fifth home run of the year in the first inning.

Mike Brosseau gave Syracuse the lead in extra innings with an RBI single, scoring the free baserunner. After a Pablo Reyes single, Carlos Cortes launched his second homer of the night, giving the Mets a comfortable four-run lead.

Cortes, who has spent three separate stints on the developmental list, has had an interesting year–he has a .901 OPS for the season and a slash line of .390/.432/.756 (1.188 OPS) in June. The 27-year-old is spending his second season in Syracuse and has posted solid numbers across his 5.5 years in the Mets organization.

The 21-year-old struck out the side in the second as part of a stretch where he had four consecutive K’s. It was the first time he went six innings in a start since May 21.

The 19-year-old has at least one hit in four of the last five games.

The 10 hits allowed were the most the 22-year-old has allowed in an outing this year, and he has allowed four earned runs in three of the four outings he has had this month (6.64 ERA).

Part of the New York Mets’ decision process will be based on their offseason and whether they are in trade and acquisition mode or are truly targeting 2025 as their next year to compete. If they choose to compete in 2024, player may be left off the 40-man roster and claimed in the draft or could be traded in a bigger deal to avoid losing them for nothing. The number of players on the 40-man roster at the time of the Winter Meetings will also determine the number of players that the Mets will be able to add to the roster.

All in all, while this is speculation, the front office is likely only considering a small group to be added to the roster and is likely doing digging to find out whether prospects will be poached if they choose to keep them off of their 40-man roster.

First Year of Eligibility

Eric Orze

Back in 2021, pundits would’ve predicted that Eric Orze would’ve been a surefire addition to the 40-man roster this winter. However, after two years of struggles in Triple-A and a stagnation in his “stuff” on the mound, he will likely be left off the roster despite his devastating sinker and his strong finish to the season. He has a realistic chance to be drafted this winter.

Prediction: Not Added.

Daniel Juarez

Leaving Daniel Juarez off the 40-man roster may be realistic, but it will still likely leave a bad feeling in the pit of the Mets’ stomachs. He started off the season with 15 scoreless innings in Brooklyn and then posted a 3.22 ERA with an above-average fastball from the left side in 40-plus Double-A innings. Luckily, his tenure in Double-A may not be enough for a team to take a chance on him in the MLB portion of the draft and he will likely stay in the Mets system.

Prediction: Not Added.

Brandon McIlwain

A strong finish to the season made a good case for Brandon McIlwain to be added to the roster or even make a late-season debut. In particular, his skyrocketing walk rate (17.8% in Triple-A) shows his steady plate discipline improvement. While McIlwain will be at MLB spring training and will be a good depth piece for the Mets going forward, if he continues to develop, he will likely be left off the roster. He will be unclaimed due to below-average power production and average strikeout rates.

Prediction: Not Added.

Alex Ramírez

Alex Ramírez also would’ve been pegged to be added to this roster had readers asked experts last season, however, after an up-and-down season, he fell off of MLB’s top-100 prospect list. He is the highest-ranked Mets’ prospect in this article, ranked at No. 11 in the system, but posted a paltry .627 OPS in High-A in 2023. His numbers from this season won’t excite Mets’ fans but will put them at ease when he is left off of the 40-man roster, making him a lock to go unselected.

Second Year of Eligibility

Justin Jarvis

Recently acquired from the Brewers for Mark Canha, Justin Jarvis is the most likely Met to be added to the 40-man roster this winter. With an elite fastball with nearly 20″ of vertical break and a solid sweeper and splitter off-speed combo, Jarvis is both developed and near MLB-ready. At No. 15 in the Mets’ system, he will be at big-league camp this spring and will compete for a role as a depth piece in the rotation.

Prediction: Added.

Jeremiah Jackson

After swatting over 20 homers and changing organizations to the Mets, Jeremiah Jackson is certainly a candidate to wind up on the 40-man. He’s currently the No. 22 prospect in the system but still managed just a .248 average and sub-.800 OPS despite his 23 home runs. He hits the ball hard and put up 110 mph-plus exit velocities this season but doesn’t seem to be MLB-ready quite yet.

If it took Ronny Mauricio the whole season to make it to Queens with better numbers in Syracuse, Jackson seems to be a ways off that pace still. He has a small chance to get taken but likely will remain in the Mets system.

Joander Suarez

This is probably my favorite pick of the bunch. Joander Suarez was a top prospect, but Tommy John surgery during the 2021 season slowed his rise through the season significantly. He finished the season with a bang, better than anybody else (maybe in history), throwing a no-hitter in the midst of two straight hitless outings. In his final 25 innings, he allowed just one run and six hits. Six hits.

Prediction: Added.

Luis Moreno

If Luis Moreno had continued his 2022 success, he would’ve been a likely addition, however, he was remarkably average in 2023. He had average strikeout and ground ball rates and needs to improve the shape of his curveball. As a sinker and cutter/gyro slider pitcher, he should throw more of a sweeper than a traditional top-to-bottom curveball. His fastball and cutter are both nasty pitches and are above-average MLB offerings, but he needs to improve execution before earning a call-up, as shown by his 4.90 ERA in a hearty 120-plus innings in Double-A. He remains a prospect, but will be left off.

Hunter Parsons

Hunter Parsons likely has next to no shot to be added to the 40-man this winter, however, he does have a slim chance to get selected in the Rule 5 draft. He had a solid Triple-A tenure this year with a 26% strikeout rate and better-than-average walk rate. His pitch offerings–particularly his fastball velocity–improved drastically in 2023, and he became a legitimate candidate for an MLB promotion. He should compete for a depth spot in spring training but might change organizations if things go his way.

Prediction: Not Added.

Brendan Hardy

Brendan Hardy has had strong 2022 and 2023 seasons and has the best extension in professional baseball along with solid pitch shapes. His 35%-plus strikeout rate between Brooklyn (High-A) and Binghamton (Double-A) is worth a second glance.

However, a handful of innings in Double-A likely won’t get him over the hump to be a roster addition. Maybe he wows evaluators in the Fall League, but more than likely, he will be an arm to keep an eye on in the upper minors in 2024.

Luke Ritter

Luke Ritter‘s power numbers brought him into this conversation, but a late-season injury likely keeps him off the roster. While he pumped 27 long balls and had above-average walk rates, he did have high strike out numbers and was about league-average in Triple-A despite his power prowess.

A lack of a true position makes it difficult to see Ritter getting added to the roster or picked up by another club, even if his bat is MLB-ready.

Prediction: Not Added.

Carlos Cortes

Carlos Cortes has many similarities to McIlwain and likely was in consideration for a September call-up, however, he is likely a “Quadruple-A” depth piece at this point. He ended up with a below-league-average OPS for the International League, even with his better-than-average walk and strike out rates–flashing average power and a low batting average. Without a major speed tool at his disposal as an outfielder, the bat simply won’t be enough to warrant an addition, even with his even platoon splits.

Prediction: Not Added.

Junior Santos

While Junior Santos struggled and was demoted to the bullpen halfway through the year, he still has an elite fastball and intriguing frame at six-foot-seven. He reaches the upper 90 mph range on his sinker, and with a high release height. While he won’t be added to the Mets’ 40-man roster, he might get snagged in the draft

In the minor league baseball season, players ride the rising and falling sea of promotion hopes and dreams. Carlos Cortes recently wiped out on the biggest wave of his 2023 season as he was nearly called up to the major leagues for the first time in last week’s wave of September call-ups. Representing solid outfield depth and consistent production, Cortes put up an attractive yet non-sexy resume in Syracuse this season. His current slash line is .254/.360/.454 (.814 OPS) which was sneakily productive due to his high-walk and low-strikeout totals (56 BB, 78 SO).

Cortes has been in the Mets’ system his whole career, and is one of just six 2018 draftees still with the Mets that is yet to debut (Brian Metoyer, Hayden Senger, Nick Meyer, Brendan Hardy, and Jaylen Palmer). He has posted consistent power production throughout his career, with between 11 and 15 home runs in each season from 2019-2023. His OPS has exploded this year, however, due to a sharp increase in walks and decrease in strikeouts, leading to more balls in play and a better on base percentage.

His 14% walk rate this season is over 4% higher than any other season total he’s had in the minor leagues thus far and he’s managed to do it in his first full season in Triple-A. As Ronny Mauricio has started to improve his plate discipline, along with many other players MLB-wide, Cortes is showing that he also has the ability to be more selective at the plate, allowing his hit tool to shine through more easily on the stat sheet.

Cortes certainly will draw interest to the front office as a potential addition to the 40-man roster in the offseason, representing a similar style of player to Nick Plummer who was signed by the club in advance of the 2021 season. Cortes is in the last year of his first-year minor league player contract and needs to either be added to the 40-man roster or re-signed on a minor league deal to avoid free agency.

While Cortes’ exit velocities aren’t overly impressive, not quite reaching the 110-mph threshold, he puts balls in play at the right launch angles to get base hits. This ability is certainly a trainable skill as seen in Luis Arráez this season. Players don’t have to blister the baseball to get hits if they hit enough line drives. Typically, this skill isn’t as repeatable at the MLB level as in the minor leagues due to superior infield defense, Cortes avoids hitting too many ground balls, quelling fear of a major regression.

The scouting report on Cortes is that he is a fantastic fastball hitter and is much weaker against breaking balls. Typically, drastic splits like his are easily identified by opposing pitching staffs, making his improved chase rates all the more important. He’s a great high ball hitter and also pulls the ball well, indicating quick bat speed and a good point of contact. His flatter swing and high ball hitting is why he is able to hit double-digit round trippers even with a more contact oriented approach.

His hot zones at the plate are specifically inside, even off the plate inside, and high and in and his cold zones are away. An easy adjustment he could make would be to crowd the plate more to get those hot zones more in the strike zone, also eliminating any in-zone cold zones.

His platoon splits are also incredibly neutral making him a potential everyday outfielder if he continues to improve. Small adjustments like his stance positioning strategy and larger long-term changes such as a few miles an hour of bat speed and exit velocity could put him in the conversation for being everyday outfield depth and warranting a spot on the 40-man roster.

Trey McLoughlin carried the no-hitter into the eighth inning when he gave up a triple to Nationals prospect Brady House. Both pitchers stifled a lineup with three top-100 prospects (two top 10 in James Wood and Dylan Crews) in it.

The Rumble Ponies have now opened up a four-game lead over the Portland Sea Dogs for a playoff spot.

High-A

In the first inning, Cortes crushed a 424-foot grand slam over the center field wall to give Syracuse a 4-0 lead. Cortes’ second blast of the night came in the fifth inning with the game knotted up at 4-4. He hit a two-run shot over the right-center field wall, giving the Mets a 6-4 advantage. Cortes has reached base in 13 straight games and is slashing .284/.437/.617 with a 1.054 OPS, eight homers, and 18 RBIs this month.

Ronny Mauricio extended his on-base streak to 21 games with a base knock 104.4 mph off the bat in the first inning. In the sixth inning, Syracuse had a 6-4 lead, and Mauricio launched an opposite-field two-run shot to extend the Mets lead to 8-4. He finished the game 3-for-5 with a couple of RBIs and two runs scored. The 22-year-old switching-hitting infielder had his third three-hit performance and has clubbed three dingers in his last five contests. His eight stolen bases and 11 walks in August are both career-highs for any month.

Ronny Mauricio has two hits tonight including his 23rd home run of the season.

He has reached base in 21 straight games.

Daniel Palka went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored in his first game since signing a minor league deal with the Mets. The 31-year-old slugger was with the Boston Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate Worcester and hit .233/.309/.410 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs in 80 games.

On Monday, Ruiz was named the Eastern League Player of the Week (August 21-27). The 23-year-old slashed .500/.636/1.125 with an OPS of 1.761 during the five games against New Hampshire. He had three home runs, eight RBIs, and three straight multi-hit games in the series.

Kevin Parada went 0-for-4 at the plate with two strikeouts in his Double-A debut. Parada showed off his arm behind the dish and threw out Crews, attempting to steal second base in the first inning.

Luisangel Acuña had his sixth multi-hit game in his last nine contests with two singles. The 21-year-old speedster is hitting .395 (15-for-38) with two doubles, four RBIs, three stolen bases and six runs scored during that span.

The Brooklyn Cyclones bats go silent in a 6-1 loss to the Greenville Drive Tuesday evening. Brooklyn only managed two hits all game.

The Cyclones’ lone run came in the eighth inning with two outs. Cleanup hitter Stanley Consuegra ripped a triple off the right field wall, driving in Jett Williams to pull Brooklyn within 6-1. The 22-year outfielder has 13 RBIs in his last 11 games.

Jett Williams has continued to be an on-base machine in High-A (.580 OBP). He walked two more times Tuesday evening and now has 24 walks this month. The 19-year-old has reached base safely in 24 out of 25 games since his promotion to High-A Brooklyn.

20-year-old slugger Ryan Clifford has reached base in seven straight games. He drew three walks in the contest for the second time in a week. Clifford has a .438 OBP with two homers, five RBIs, and eight walks during that span.

Right-hander Saul García made his High-A debut for Brooklyn. The 20-year-old allowed one run on three hits over three innings of relief. García issued two free passes and struck out two. He was 5-9 with a 5.35 ERA and 96 punchouts across 67 1/3 innings for St. Lucie Mets.

LOW-A

The games between the St. Lucie Mets and Tampa Tarpons on Tuesday and Wednesday were postponed due to Hurricane Idalia striking the Florida Gulf Coast. St. Lucie’s next game is scheduled for Thursday, August 31st, at 6 p.m.

The Mets had a huge game offensively on Sunday afternoon: eight of their 13 hits went for extra bases, including four home runs, and they went an impressive 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Stewart reached base five times in this game and is hitting an incredible .375/.484/.958 for the month of June. He has six home runs in his last 11 games, and his 1.459 OPS over the last 15 days ranks second in the International League during that span. Cortes has also seen major improvements in his offensive performance so far in June: he is hitting .320/.419/.680 so far this month. Meyer had only the second start of his career at third base after starting one game there last season.

Valverde gave up a career-high eight runs on Sunday. His 6.17 ERA would be the worst of his career if the season ended today. After finishing May with an ERA of 9.00 over 12.0 innings and then having a two-week layoff, Orze started off June with one of his best appearances of the season. He struck out a season-high five batters and did not give up a run for the first time since May 10. Parsons has not given up an earned run or walked a batter over his first four Triple-A appearances.

Ritter and Jordan both had incredible games on Sunday afternoon, as both hit multiple home runs. It was Ritter’s third multiple-homer game in the last two weeks, and he has a 1.411 OPS over that span. For the season, he is third in the Eastern League in home runs and fourth in OPS. Jordan is hitting .310/.459/.586 so far in June.

Santos had a strong abbreviated start, needing just 37 pitches to get through three innings. After struggling with walks earlier in the season, he has walked just two batters over his last 17.0 innings pitched. Thomas was very impressive in his organizational debut, striking out three batters and allowing only one batter to reach base over two innings. Clenney has not given up a run in three straight appearances.

High-A

The Cyclones were held to just a single run for the first six innings of Sunday’s game and entered the seventh inning trailing 4-1. They came closer with a two-run homer by César Berbesi and eventually took the lead on Lugo’s eighth-inning home run. Parada had his second three-hit performance in his last four games. Ramírez is hitting .233/.343/.467 so far in June.

It was a very typical start for Tidwell: he walked a batter per inning, struck out over twice that number, and got through only four innings because he threw 91 pitches. Tidwell’s 14 K/9 shows how electric he can be, but he has also walked 33 batters in 38 2/3 innings pitched, which has led to a high ERA and fewer than four innings per start. Ramos has given up just one earned run in seven innings pitched so far in June.

The Mets were held without a run for the first four innings of Sunday’s game before they scored their first run on a José Hernández groundout in the fifth inning. Lara then added another run with a home run in the sixth inning. The homer left his bat at 100.8 MPH and traveled 369 feet. After hitting just three home runs total over the last two seasons, Lara has already hit seven in just 34 games this season. Perozo is 6-for-16 with two home runs and a double over his last four games.

De La Cruz served as an opener in this game and tossed a perfect inning. He averaged 94 MPH on his fastball and had a 60% whiff rate on the pitch. Ramirez struggled mightily for a second straight start; he has a 10.80 ERA in June and has seen his ERA balloon from 2.95 to 4.31 over that span. Reid was strong in his St. Lucie debut and displayed very high spin rates on all of his pitches. His one curveball had a spin rate of 3084 RPM.
