While it is still April, this team appears to be broken. And there doesn’t appear to be any tangible sign of a turnaround on the horizon, either.

Instead, the Mets just keep taking backward steps. Take this weekend, for example. New York was swept at home by the Rockies. And, if you need reminding, Colorado lost 119 games in 2025.

The offense was an embarrassing no-show yet again. There were yet more defensive mistakes. And, more worryingly, is the fact that there just appears to be no energy, no pulse, and no real heartbeat with this team.

If things carry on the way they are, then it probably won’t be too long until drastic changes are made. After all, it is getting late early and the season already looks to be in grave danger.

Thanks to the series loss to the Rockies, the Mets are now tied for the second-worst start in franchise history at 9-19. Things are that bad, and they could get a whole lot worse.

In the meantime, let’s go over everything from another tough weekend in the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

3 UP

OFF DAY

After yet another awful weekend, maybe an off day on Monday is what this team needs. Okay, that’s probably a stretch, but we’re in short supply when it comes to positives. Very few things went right for the Mets over the weekend. And, with the season continuing to spiral, an opportunity for everyone to come together and try to come up with some much-needed answers with no game to worry about may not be a bad thing.

LONE BRIGHT SPOT

At least the Mets have Nolan McLean. With few other positives to cling to, at least Mets fans know they have a true stud in the rotation. McLean delivered again, allowing just two runs (one earned) with two walks and seven strikeouts over five innings. Sure, he isn’t getting a lot of run support. And McLean’s struggles the third time through the order are a little concerning. He owns a 10.40 ERA against an order a third time through. However, with that said, once McLean learns how to maintain his stuff, then he looks set to be unstoppable. He’s the only good thing about this Mets team right now.

SAVING GRACE

For everything that went wrong throughout the doubleheader on Sunday, at least the bullpen wasn’t a net negative. Six relievers combined to allow just one run over 10.1 innings in the two games combined. Carl Edwards Jr., who was called up over the weekend, did walk three in the final game of the series, but also didn’t allow a run and struck out five over 3.1 innings of work. Devin Williams tossed a perfect inning to silence the noise after a couple of rough outings. Luke Weaver looked good, as did Austin Warren. All in all, the bullpen was incredibly effective and did its job on a busy Sunday.

3 DOWN

SOMETHING HAS GOT TO GIVE

This can’t go on any longer, can it? The Mets are a broken team and have now lost 15 of their last 17 games. Furthermore, they don’t look close to turning things around. Not only is this a fundamentally bad baseball team, but the players also seem incapable of adjusting on the fly. We’re seeing the same old mistakes and fatal flaws game in and game out. If that wasn’t bad enough, there just seems to be a real lack of effort and hustle, as well as no real pulse or heartbeat. This team isn’t doing anything with any real energy. With the season already on the brink, something seismic may have to happen in order to jolt the Mets out of their current malaise. Otherwise, it could be a very long and rough summer.

SAME OLD STORY 

How can an offense with the likes of Juan Soto and Bo Bichette be this bad? Against a team that lost over 110 games last year, the Mets lineup scored just one run over 18 innings on Sunday and were shut out for the fifth time this year. Furthermore, the offense managed just four runs in three games against Colorado, and has now put up a measly 38 runs in their last 16 games. If you want more damming evidence of just how bad the Mets are offensively, they’ve now scored one run or fewer 10 times. They’ve also scored two runs or fewer 14 times, and have lost on all 14 occasions. As a result, the 92 runs the Mets have scored this season are the fewest in all of baseball, as is the 3.28 runs per game average.

Stats aside, the eye test paints a more damming and concerning picture. The majority of the at-bats just look non-competitive, and the entire lineup seems to be stuck in a never-ending funk. Too many players are showing flashes only to then go ice-cold for prolonged stretches. There is no clear answer for why the lineup is struggling as badly as it is, and there appears to be no clear fix, either.

(NOT) GOING LONG

Freddy Peralta has been solid enough so far this year. In other words, he’s been good, not great. Or, rather, he’s started out great but then faded fast. As was the case on Friday night. Peralta pitched four scoreless innings but ran into trouble in the fifth and was soon pulled. Through his first six starts as a Met, Peralta has only pitched a full six innings once. He’s also pitching to a 3.90 ERA. It goes without saying that if the Mets are to salvage anything from this season, then they need Peralta to start offering both quality and quantity in his starts.

Edwards has struck out 13, walked 11 and pitched to a 5.29 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 17 innings at Triple-A Syracuse this year. He threw three innings apiece last year for the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers. The bulk of his 2025 pitching was at Triple-A (4.44 ERA in 50 2/3 innings) and in the Mexican Baseball League (3.38 ERA, 74 2/3 innings).

His last meaningful MLB work came in 2023 when he posted a 3.69 ERA over 31 2/3 innings for the Washington Nationals.

Scott, 26, was ineffective Thursday in his first MLB action since 2024. He walked five, got four outs and was pulled in the second inning of the Mets’ 10-8 victory over the Twins.

“I didn’t do my job, but they did their job,” Scott told reporters after the game, referring to the bullpen and the offense. “It’s why we’re here with a win today.”

The Mets start a three-game series with the Rockies Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET. Freddy Peralta (1-2, 4.05 ERA) faces RHP Michael Lorenzen (1-2, 7.48 ERA).

Aforementioned Brooklyn (High-A) finally snagged their second win, while the St. Lucie Mets (Single-A) split their weekend doubleheader.

Austin Warren continues to impress in the minors and remains the likely candidate to be the first man up from Syracuse. Dan Hammer, whom the Mets signed to a two-year minor league contract, is off to a scoreless start for Syracuse.

They’ll look to rebound on Sunday afternoon against the Bisons at 1:05 pm ET.

Catcher Chris Suero is cementing himself as a legitimate prospect for the Mets, while also pushing himself closer to the national spotlight. Jacob Reimer, a top-100 prospect, has been off to a slow start for the Ponies but reached base three times on Saturday. Their offense has the potential to be among the best in all of minor league baseball.

Brendan Girton struggled once again for Binghamton, this time allowing a staggering six walks. Girton has now already walked 10 batters this year, 25% of his total from 2025, in roughly eight percent of the innings. He was bailed out by an incredible performance from Jefry Yan, recording all of his outs via the strikeout. The rest of the Ponies’ bullpen was strong, allowing just two runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched.

The Brooklyn bats have been deafeningly quiet to begin the season, but the play of the Mets’ most recent first-round selection powered the offense for at least one day. Mitch Voit recorded three hits, one of which was the team’s only extra-base hit, and was supported by a four-time on-base performance by Ronald Hernandez, while John Bay continued his hot start to the season. Brooklyn reached base 12 times on the day, with Bay, Hernandez, and Voit accounting for over 75% of those occurrences.

The start of the season could not have gone any worse for Wyatt Hudepohl, who has now allowed nine earned runs in 7 2/3 innings on this young season. Command has continued to be an issue, with Hudepohl routinely missing his spots and leaving the ball over the plate. He was followed by a spotless outing from the Cyclones bullpen, totaling 5 2/3 scoreless innings of work with 10 strikeouts. They only allowed four base runners as a group.

The first half of Saturday’s doubleheader was a tough hand for the St. Lucie Mets to be dealt, with most of their bats remaining quiet as their pitching got battered. Veteran Tommy Pham took an o-for on the night, with JT Benson and Elian Peña were the only two bats to reach base more than one time. The Mets’ highest-paid international free agent signing of all time (Peña) is off to an incredible start to his first season in the United States. Benson was a late addition to the Mets’ farm system this spring after starting the season in independent ball, not officially joining the Mets until March 12.

Conner Ware was not strong in his second outing of the season, but his strikeout-to-walk numbers are still more than enough to hang his hat on. Ernesto Mercedes was ineffective in relief, following up a scoreless season debut with a three-run outing. Jorge de Leon was the only effective Mets reliever, working a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout and no runners reaching. He has not allowed a base runner in his first two outings this year.

The second half of the doubleheader was a complete 180-degree turn for the Mets, with their bats breaking out in a major way while their pitching gave them a few extra chances. Pham reached twice, while AJ Salgado turned in a near-perfect performance at the plate. He and Sam Robinson are off to solid starts with the bat. Robertson has started nicely for the St. Lucie offense after being a 17th-round selection last year, and is a candidate to move through the Mets’ system quickly.

Cam Tilly struggled more in his second outing than he ever got close to in his first, but was able to handle it relatively well. His strikeout numbers were still high, but he struggled with hitting spots and leaving the ball over the plate, which was not an issue in his first start when he went five scoreless with six strikeouts. Tyler McLoughlin was almost perfect in long relief before Ryan Dollar finished the second half of the doubleheader.

Former KBO arm Brandon Waddell started the game for the Mets. He threw two perfect frames with three strikeouts.

Waddell spoke to the media after the game and said the plan is for him to stay stretched out and pitch multiple innings during his spring outings.

He was followed by Carl Edwards Jr. who shutdown the side in the third before finding himself struggling a bit in the fourth inning.

He gave up a lead-off walk to start the frame before retiring the next two he faced. He then walked Griffin Conine and was charged with a balk with Connor Norby at the plate to advance the runners. Edwards ultimately allowed one of the Mets’ two runs in the game.

Joe Jacques, who the Mets signed as a free agent in October, and invited to major league camp, pitched the sixth. He gave up the other run in the contest, this time earned.

Huascar Brazobán pitched the fifth and retired the side in order with two strikeouts.

Likely minor-leaguers Austin Warren, Ben Simon, and Aaron Rozek finished out the afternoon for the Mets, each pitching one inning, respectively. Warren struck out two in a perfect frame in a great inning of work. Simon gave up just one walk and Rozek allowed just one hit, but the last three pitchers on the day did not give up any runs as they closed out the day with three scoreless frames.

It was a great start to the spring for the Mets’ pitchers.

Opening Day is finally here! After five long months of cold weather and no Mets baseball, Amazin’ fans can rejoice as their club will take the field yet again today. Last season was a wild roller coaster ride that saw the Mets look dead in the water a couple of months in, to doing a complete 180 and going to the sixth game of the NLCS. The squad from Queens has now added some new faces, including former crosstown foes Juan Soto and Clay Holmes, to try to get themselves over the hump. The energy is high as another exciting season is on tap in Queens!

The Mets open up in Houston today at 4:10 p.m. EST. It will be Clay Holmes making his first start as a Met, going against Astros ace Framber Valdez.

Manny Randhawa of MLB.com did an interview with Juan Soto’s mentor and Little League coach, Rafel Zapata, who turned Sot from a pitcher to a position player. 

Frankie Montas‘ MRI this week showed “really good healing” in his strained right lat, David Stearns said. He still is a week or two away from starting a throwing program, per Tim Healey of Newsday.

The trade deadline is only nine days away. With August 2nd rapidly approaching, the rumor mill is in full force. Earlier today, two different reports surrounding the Mets and possible additions came to the forefront. Specifically regarding Josh Bell, Trey Mancini, and J.D. Martinez.

Per Pat Ragazzo and Michael Marino of FanNation, the Mets are one of several teams that have made a trade offer for Josh Bell to the Washington Nationals. The report then explains that, “The deal would see the Mets send an upper level minor league starting pitcher and outfielder to Washington in exchange for Bell and a big-league relief pitcher.”

Bell owns a slash line of .305/.386/496, which is good for a .882 OPS. He has 13 home runs and 51 RBI on the season. The switch-hitting first baseman is arguably having the second-best season of his seven year career. The addition of Bell would give the Mets the big, middle-of-the-order everyday bat the team is still pursuing.

As for the rumored big-league pitcher, it is hard to predict who exactly that can be. Steve Cishek is a 36-year-old veteran owns a 3.95 ERA and 4.09 FIP this season. Meanwhile, Carl Edwards Jr. is another veteran reliever who has a 3.03 ERA across 35 2/3 innings pitched this season. Again, that is just pure speculation on who it may be.

The other rumors from this afternoon was per Andy Martino of SNY and it explained that the New York Mets continue to scout Trey Mancini. Specifically, during the Yankees and Orioles series that concluded today.

Mancini is set to be one of the top rental power bats on the market. Despite the recent surge from the Orioles, Mancini appears that he can be had given his pending free agent status. He owns a slash line of .268/.345/.404 this season, which is good for a slightly above-average .749 OPS. He has nine home runs and 37 RBI on the season. Like Bell, Mancini would give the Mets an everyday middle-of-the-order bat they are looking for.

The last tidbit that was made available today was once again per Pat Ragazzo and Michael Marino of Fan Nation. They reported that the Mets are among teams monitoring J.D. Martinez’s availability.

After losing their first three games out of the All-Star break, which extended their losing streak to five, the Red Sox are back under .500. With this, people are wondering if Boston will soon be sellers. If they are, pending free agent J.D. Martinez may be on the block.

The All-Star is slashing .302/.368/.481 this season. He has nine home runs and 38 RBI. The designated hitter has been a top hitter in the league for years. Adding him would be a huge boost to the Mets’ lineup. Though, despite being a pending free agent, the right-handed hitter may be one of the more pricey options.

Late in spring training, as teams sort out their roster decisions, players become available either by being released or exercising options they may have run their contracts. With just a couple of days remaining in spring training 2021, here are some players who have recently become available and may fit with the Mets.

Relief Pitcher, Steve Cishek

Cishek, a right-hander, was released by the Houston Astros on March 25. The 34-year-old began his career with the Florida (now Miami) Marlins. He has closing experience, registering 34 saves in 2013 and 39 saves in 2014 with the Marlins. Since 2014, Cishek has served mostly in setup roles with the Cardinals, Mariners, Cubs and White Sox. Cishek is a fastball/slider pitcher, who has seen his average fastball velocity drop from 93 mph early in his career to just under 91 mph since 2015.

Last season with the White Sox, Cishek posted his career-worst H/9 with a mark of 9.5 in 22 appearances (his career number 7.0 over 11 seasons). He does manage to strike out hitters, having struck out 9.5 per nine innings pitched last year, which is also his career K/9 rate.

The Mets, as many teams, can benefit from adding bullpen depth to the organization. While they do have a right-handed heavy bullpen, they have lost a significant piece in Seth Lugo, who will miss at least the first month of the season. Additionally, Dellin Betances has struggled this spring, and while his release seems unlikely at this point, it’s fair to wonder how long the Mets will carry him if he does not perform. Robert Gsellman has also been ineffective this spring, so adding Cishek may make sense as a depth option.

Relief Pitcher, Tony Watson

The veteran left-hander opted out of his contract with the Phillies on March 26. He was not having a good spring, as the 35-year-old surrendered four earned runs in five innings and allowed nine hits total. He did record seven strikeouts while allowing two walks, however.

Watson will turn 36-years-old this season, and is a 10-year major league veteran with the Pirates, Dodgers and Giants. He features a fastball, slider, and changeup, throwing his fastball and changeup the majority of the time. Last year, his fastball velocity dropped from 93 mph for most of his career  to 90 mph. In 21 appearances with the Giants last season, Watson had an impressive 0.889 WHIP, and allowed just 13 hits in a small sample size of 18 innings pitched. Watson is not a strikeout pitcher, with a career mark of eight strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

Luis Rojas has said that he would like to have two left-handers in his bullpen. Aaron Loup is a lock to make the team. Other candidates include Jerry Blevins, Stephen Tarpley, and Mike Montgomery (who may be a candidate for the rotation as well), as noted in this MMO article by Connor Grey.

It would not hurt to bring another candidate into the mix, especially an experienced one in Watson. Though his velocity is down, Watson seems to be effective even in recent seasons (his highest WHIP in there last three seasons is 1.259). Why not expand the field from which Rojas will choose his second lefty?

Third Baseman, Todd Frazier

Should the Mets bring “The Toddfather” to Queens for a third time? The New Jersey native opted to not stay with the Pirates, the team that signed him during the off season and brought him to camp.

Jonathan Villar is nursing what the Mets are calling a minor hamstring injury. It’s not clear if he will be ready for opening night in Washington, and groin injuries tend to linger. Frazier may provide short-term depth. Frazier had a decent spring training slashing .250/.353/.643 with three home runs in 28 at-bats.

The Mets could seek a defensive replacement for J.D. Davis late in games, and Frazier is a better fielder and has a reputation for being a clubhouse leader. However, it’s not likely that he would accept a deal where his release may be likely in the short term.

Relief Pitcher Carl Edwards Jr.

Edwards was in camp with the Braves, and opted out of his contract, becoming a free agent on March 25. The 29-year-old right-hander was with the Cubs from 2015 until he was dealt to the Padres at the trading deadline of the 2019 season.

The South Carolina native has been almost exclusively a setup reliever, logging just three saves in six seasons. Over his career, he’s allowed just 4.8 hits per nine innings, while averaging 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings. Edwards’ average fastball velocity during is career has been 95.2 mph, and his velocity has been a bit below that the last two seasons. He features just two pitches, a fastball he throws 72.5% of the time, and a changeup.

Edwards may be a reasonable option for the Mets to consider. He’s still young, and has the capability to miss bats per his strikeout rate. He could make a nice middle-inning option against a right-handed hitter.

It will be interesting to see if the Mets have interest in any players that have recently become available. The roster is close to set, but as the cliche goes, it takes the entire 40-man roster to win. Having quality depth on that roster is always a good idea.
