Review

It only took three games for the Citi Field boo birds to chirp for Bo Bichette, but he thought it was understandable given that he went 1-for-14 with eight strikeouts.

“If anything I thought it took too long,” he joked on March 29. “But I mean, I get it. I thought my at-bats were terrible too.”

It was mostly a rough go offensively into early June, with Bichette’s OPS sitting at a dismal .570 after an 0-for-3 showing in Seattle on June 2. At the time, that was fourth-worst OPS in baseball of 161 qualified hitters.

But the next night he went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and starting with that performance he slashed .289/.337/.447 in his final 99 games, which is in line with his career numbers (.288/.332/.456). The problem, which can be blamed on Bichette and many others, was that the Mets were 26-35 by then and never got closer than seven games below .500 the rest of the way.

Defensively, Bichette was solid playing third base for the first time in his career. He was one out above average (OAA) and made five errors in 113 games. In 47 games at short, filling in when Francisco Lindor was injured, he was negative-two outs above average with five errors. In 2025 with the Blue Jays, he was negative-13 outs above average in 132 games at short, so third base looks like a better spot.

2027 Preview

Bichette holds a player option for $42 million and has until five days after the World Series ends to make a decision. He will get a $5 million buyout if he opts out. If he comes back, he has a player option for 2028 for another $42 million.

“I’m having a great time here,” he told Will Sammon of The Athletic last month. “I’m enjoying my teammates and I think that the future here is bright. The team is building something good. There’s a winning atmosphere with veterans who are really great players and young players who are showing they can be winning players on a good team. So that’s exciting for me.”

Lindor wants him back and expects him to play better next season.

“I think he’s gonna be 10 (times) better than what he was this year,” Lindor said after the season finale on September 27. “He’s a really good hitter. A very unique hitter. And he’s gonna be even better year two playing third base. And I know he’s got a lot of fire in him that he’s gonna work very hard this offseason try to be the best version of himself. It would mean a lot. I would love to have him back, for sure.”

Lindor might have been speaking from experience. After slashing .285/.346/.488 over six years for Cleveland, he hit .230/.322/.412 in his first year in New York in 2021. The next season he finished ninth in MVP voting.

Cristopher Sanchez was on the mound for the Phillies, delivering a strong performance by limiting the Mets’ offense to just two runs over 6 1/3 innings, while striking out six batters and allowing six hits. Alex McFarlane came in to relieve Sanchez, and after the Mets started a rally in the seventh inning, he managed to halt their momentum by getting Francisco Lindor to pop out for an infield fly and striking out Juan Soto.

On the flip side, Jonah Tong struggled on the mound for the Mets, only going 4 and 2/3 innings. He gave up four early runs, walked four batters, allowed five hits, and recorded five strikeouts, throwing 29 pitches in the first inning alone. Tong was also accidentally spiked by Phillies infielder Bryson Stott at first base early in the game but continued to pitch.

Jack Weisenburger and Jefry Yan provided scoreless innings, but things fell apart when Kodai Senga entered the game. Senga managed to get one out but then walked the bases loaded and allowed a bases-clearing triple to Justin Crawford, which effectively sealed the victory for Philadelphia. Senga struggled with his control during most of his outing and did not finish the eighth inning.

Austin Warren came in to relieve Senga, with the Mets walking four batters in the top of the eighth. Warren would come out for a second inning and would pitch a scoreless frame.

Aside from Bo Bichette‘s home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Brett Baty‘s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, the Mets’ offense had another lackluster performance. New York left six runners on base and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, with Francisco Alvarez being the only player to record multiple hits during the game. A.J. Ewing went 2-for-2 after coming into the game for Nick Morabito.

After the final out, the entire New York Mets dugout walked over to behind home plate and raised their caps and helmets to salute Howie Rose.

Standing ovations greeted Mike Piazza and Darryl Strawberry when the sluggers returned to Queens as visitors. Piazza the Padre went 1-for-4 with a single on Aug. 8, 2006. (The next night he homered twice off of Pedro Martinez.) Darryl the Dodger homered off of Frank Viola on May 7, 1991.

Carlos Beltran earned mostly cheers and a few boos on June 1, 2012, when he came back with St. Louis. Carlos the Cardinal went 0-for-4, but hit a line drive over the third-base bag in the sixth inning that was, um, charitably, ruled foul. And then Johan Santana completed the first no-hitter in franchise history.

Expect a warm welcome for Pete Alonso when he returns to Citi Field Monday for the first time since he signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles. The 31-year-old slugger is having a strong season in Baltimore after a slow start, slashing .269/.363/.499 with 35 home runs and an American League-leading 100 RBIs. He is one long ball shy of career homer No. 300.

Alonso, who played in 162 games in each of the last two seasons, has played in all 150 Orioles games.

In an interview with Will Sammon of The Athletic, Bo Bichette said he will wait to decide whether to opt out of his contract until after the World Series. Bichette will earn $42 million for 2027 if he opts in and receive a $5 million buyout if he opts out. He also holds a 2028 player option for $42 million. He has until five days after the World Series ends to decide. Sammon believes, given many factors, “it’s easier to see Bichette staying put.”

First baseman/third baseman Billy Amick hit his eighth Triple-A homer and 38th overall, but Syracuse lost 6-5 to St. Paul and is 2 1/2 games back of a playoff spot with six games left. Top prospect Jefferson Rojas was promoted from Double-A Binghamton to help with the stretch run, per Sammon.

On the way to sweeping the Marlins on the road, the Mets scored a combined 31 runs. However, on the flip side, they also gave up a combined 23 runs in a series heavy on offense.

The offense saved the day on Wednesday when bad pitching led to a huge blown lead, and nearly another late in the game. As a result of the sweep, the Mets are no longer in last place in the NL East. Furthermore, they’ve now won eight of their last 11 games.

On that note, let’s dive into another edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

Juan Soto by Berto Carlo

3 UP

FLASHES OF PROMISE

We got another long-awaited glimpse at Jonah Tong. The young pitcher was called back up and got the start on Monday. He showed some good and bad. The good was seven strikeouts over four innings. The bad was four earned runs allowed on four hits. What is important to note, however, is that Tong recovered after giving up a three-run homer, allowing just two baserunners over his final three innings. In short, there’s plenty to work with Tong, but he showed enough to be encouraged about.

BACK ON THE HORSE

We talked about A.J. Ewing waking up from his slumber last time out, but it is worth talking about again. Because since then, the rookie has continued to show plenty at the plate. He went a combined 7-for-13 with two runs scored and five RBIs in the Miami series. That’s what you call snapping a skid. It is also encouraging that Ewing was able to work through his struggles, make the necessary adjustments, and come through it. That’s a huge positive.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION

Boy, the bats were red-hot in this series. The Mets scored a combined 31 runs across the three games. They also got contributions from up and down the lineup. Juan Soto had three RBIs and three walks in the series. Francisco Lindor hit two home runs with four RBIs. Carson Benge and Bo Bichette continue to contribute at a high clip. Then, in the series finale, Ewing, Brett Baty, Christopher Morel, and Luis Torrens combined for 10 hits, seven runs scored, and 10 RBIs. Baty continues to show why the Mets are reluctant to give up on him, while Jared Young also stayed hot in Miami. All in all, while there is work to be done, the building blocks of a potent offense appear to be in place.

Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

3 DOWN

HEART ATTACK BASEBALL

The Mets put us all through it on Wednesday. On what was Opening Night in the NFL, the Mets and the Marlins combined to put up a football score. While the offense stepped up, the pitching did not. Chris Devenski was charged with five runs to help blow an 8-0 lead. Three more relievers then combined to allow another six earned runs as the Mets nearly blew another huge lead in the ninth. Thankfully, the team held on, but there is certainly plenty of work that needs to be done in the offseason when it comes to the bullpen.

FADING FAST

Sean Manaea continues to generate confusion. The lefty owned a perfect game through five innings on Tuesday, before imploding in the sixth. The end result was four earned runs allowed on five hits. Manaea has seemingly hit a wall with 23 earned runs and seven home runs allowed over his last five starts alone. More importantly, Manaea really struggles the deeper he gets into games, and that would suggest that maybe his days as an effective starter are indeed over.

BLACK HOLE

Let’s remind you that the Mets scored 31 runs in this series. With that in mind, Francisco Alvarez contributed just one of those runs. The catcher struck out a combined three times over just two games, and his struggles have gone on for a prolonged stretch now. He is hitting just .148/.200/.279/.479 with 30 strikeouts over his last 18 games. Those are some ugly stats, and there has to be some real concern over Alvarez going forward.

The third baseman conjured some late heroics on Sunday to guide the Mets to a win over the Giants in the series finale. Bichette’s clutch hit also sealed the series win.

The three-game set against San Francisco featured many positives and some negatives for the Mets, who are now 65-78 on the year.

With that, let’s recap everything from the Giants series in the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

Bo Bichette by Berto Carlo

3 UP

BO KNOWS CLUTCH

Bo Bichette delivered a true statement moment on Sunday. The infielder has shown a prowess for coming through with runners in scoring position throughout his career. He flashed that ability once again in the series finale. At the plate with runners on the corners, two outs, and the Mets trailing 2-1, Bichette came up clutch with a three-run shot that turned the game on its head. As a result, Bichette’s heroics gave his team the lead for good. More importantly, the third baseman is looking more and more like a key piece who can contribute at a high level in 2027.

SLUMP BUSTER

A.J. Ewing appears to be waking up from his slumber. The rookie has been mired in one almighty tough patch, hitting .197 with no home runs over 46 games entering Saturday. Well, that cold streak ended with one thunderous swing of the bat in the middle game of the series. Ewing launched a 407-foot home run to show important signs of life. Furthermore, he also drew two walks before recording two hits and a run scored on Sunday. All rookies endure slumps. The fact thatEwing appears to be emerging from his slump is a huge positive for the Mets.

SHOWING HIS WORTH

Brett Baty‘s future with this team appears to be very much up in the air. However, he clearly isn’t going to give up without a fight. The super-utility player enjoyed a productive series, including recording three RBIs on Saturday. To be more exact, he drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, and came up with a two-run double in the ninth. In other words, Baty did his best to try to get his team back in the game. What happens next remains to be seen, but a strong finish to the season will only help Baty’s cause.

MINOR HICCUP

Let’s not overreact to Zac Thornton‘s rough start. Yes, the rookie was shelled on Saturday. He was rocked, allowing six runs on seven hits, including giving up four home runs. That’s hardly ideal, but again, all players will have off days, especially rookies. And, while the six earned runs reached a season-worst mark, Thornton did still strike out six batters. It is possible that some natural fatigue could be creeping in, too. All in all, while Saturday’s start was one to forget, it shouldn’t be overblown into something it isn’t.

SHINE WEARING OFF

Jefry Yan was a nice story when he was first called up. However, whether he can actually become an effective major league reliever remains to be seen. The latest evidence suggests not. Yan made two outings against the Giants, giving up a combined three earned runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. While the lefty is showing an ability to strike out hitters at a high rate, his command has always been an issue. Now optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, it remains to be seen if Yan will get back to the bigs.

GROWING DILEMMA

How will the Mets handle Marcus Semien going forward? The veteran has not been good in his first year in Queens. While he’s shown some offensive consistency since the All-Star break, he’s also regressed again as of late. For instance, Semien went a combined 2-for-10 with one walk, one run scored, no extra-base hits, and no RBIs in the Giants series. Furthermore, he is no longer a sure thing defensively. With two more years left on his contract, Semien looks to be a concern that will carry over into spring training with no clear fix.

Jonah Tong will get the start Monday at 1:10 p.m. ET at Miami and take his turn in the rotation the rest of the way, Andy Green said.

“He’s had a good run here recently (with Triple-A Syracuse) and we want to see him build on it,” Green said. “So, I think we’re all excited to see it, and we’ll continue to hand him the ball for the rest of this year. We’re not going to make a secret of that. He’s going to post when it’s his turn to pitch, and he hasn’t really had that knowledge at any point in his big-league career.”

Tong (1-1, 3.60 ERA) was disappointing overall this year at Syracuse (4.54 ERA, 22 home runs), but he’s allowed two runs or less in seven of his last eight starts. The 23-year-old has struck out 126 and walked 59 in 107 innings at Triple-A. He will face Eury Perez (7-10, 3.72 ERA) in his first major-league appearance since June 2.

“There are so many things that we have control over in our career, and sometimes there are just lessons that have to be learned,” Tong said. “I’m just really excited to see the person that I’ve become out of it.”

The Mets’ pitching was outstanding, starting with Christian Scott, who pitched into the fifth inning. He struck out seven batters while allowing four hits and two runs. Nate Lavender came in to finish the fifth inning with a strikeout. Jonathan Pintaro and Tobias Myers combined for three scoreless innings, and Kodai Senga secured the save in the ninth, marking his sixth save in six opportunities.

The Mets’ bullpen continues to impress, even after the Devin Williams injury and deadline subtractions.  Notably, Tobias Myers became the 24th different Met to earn a win this season, setting a franchise record. He delivered an encouraging performance, striking out two in his one inning of work after facing challenges earlier in the season.

For most of the afternoon, the Mets’ offense was kept in check by Giants pitchers Cesar Perdomo and Joel Kuhnel, with A.J. Ewing being the only player to record multiple hits. However, the situation changed in the bottom of the eighth inning. After just missing a home run off the top of the left field wall the previous day, Brett Baty hit his ninth home run of the year, closing the gap to a one-run game.

Following Ewing’s single and an intentional walk to Juan Soto with two outs, Bo Bichette hit a no-doubter three-run home run to left field, his 16th of the season, sealing the victory against Giants reliever, and former Mets draft pick, Carson Seymour. Bichette’s home run traveled 412 feet, 107.5 mph off the bat.

Although the Mets are out of playoff contention, this series finale, along with some encouraging performances over the past few months, has given fans hope that this team can contend in the near future with the talent they possess.

Player of the Game: Bo Bichette

Bo Bichette is showing that the Mets made the right investment in him, as he continued his strong second-half performance with a no-doubter three-run go-ahead home run against the Giants. In his last 30 games with the Mets, Bichette is hitting .296/.357/.539 with six home runs and 18 RBI.

The Mets are right back at it as they fly out to Miami to take on the Marlins for a three-game series, starting Monday, on Labor Day. Eury Perez (7-10, 3.72 ERA) will look to try and stop the Mets on the mound for Miami. First pitch will take place at 1:10 pm ET and will be broadcast on SNY and Mets Radio 880.

• RHP Tobias Myers recalled from Triple-A
• LHP Jefry Yan optioned to Triple-A

Three Things To Watch For

1. Luis Torrens. Torrens has cooled off for the last 10 days or so, going 2-for-16 with a walk in six game since August 23. In the 10 game stretch before that, Torrens went 11-for-25 with a ridiculous six home runs.
2. Dedniel Núñez. Núñez allowed eight runs (six earned) in his first five outings (5 1/3 innings) this season. Since then, he has pitched in six games, totaling 6 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit, no runs, no walks, while striking out six batters. He’s starting to look more like the reliever that was turning heads back in 2024.
3. Milestone watch. Francisco Lindor and Carson Benge are both still sitting at 16 home runs for the season, keeping them four away from 20. Lindor is looking for his ninth season with at least 20 home runs and Carson Benge is close to reaching a 20-20 season. Less likely, Bo Bichette is five home runs away from 20. It would be only his fourth season hitting that plateau.
