One of the best ways to examine team expectations around the major leagues before the season is by taking a look at the odds bookmakers set. With sports gambling at an all-time high in America, and more and more states legalizing betting, there are several different projections to look at. So, what are the current odds saying about the 2023 New York Mets?

Full-Season Team Odds

There are five different types of bets that are helpful in projecting a team out over a 162-game season. These are the World Series odds, pennant odds, division odds, playoff odds, and win totals. Here are how the Mets stack up:

World Series: +750 (11.76 percent chance)

National League Winner: +400 (20 percent chance)

National League East Winner: +135 (42.55 percent chance)

To Make Playoffs: -500 (83.33 percent chance)

Win Total: 94.5 wins

Analysis:

As of now, the Mets are tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers with the third-best odds to win the 2023 World Series. The only two teams ahead of them are the Houston Astros (+600) and New York Yankees (+650). Specifically, the Mets own the NL East’s best odds at a World Series title, ranking ahead of the Atlanta Braves (+1000) and Philadelphia Phillies (+1400).

Given the above, it is no surprise that New York is also currently tied with the Dodgers with the best odds to win the NL pennant. The Braves and San Diego Padres trail closely behind with +450 odds. Meanwhile, the defending NL champion Phillies own +700 odds.

As for the NL East title, the Mets are slim favorites at an implied 42.55 percent. The Braves trail close behind with an implied 41.67 percent chance, while the Phillies sit at 25 percent. Both the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals are longshots with +4000 and +25000 odds, respectively.

The Mets’ current win total is set at 94.5. This is tied for the fourth-highest win total in the major leagues. Only the Astros, Dodgers, and Braves (95.5) have higher totals.

Meanwhile, the Mets’ implied 83.33 percent chance to make the playoffs are the fifth-best in the major leagues. The Dodgers, Astros, Braves, and Yankees each have slightly better odds than the Mets. The Phillies trail New York with an implied chance of 73.68 percent to make the postseason.

Pete Alonso. Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Individual Players Odds

There are also several player-specific preseason odds that are always interesting to look at. The main being MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year. Here are how some noteworthy Mets stack up in these areas:

National League MVP:

Pete Alonso: +1400 (10th-best)

Francisco Lindor: +2500 (13th-best)

National League Cy Young:

José Quintana: +20000 (tied-51st-best)

National League Rookie of the Year:

Kodai Senga: +750 (tied-fourth-best)

Francisco Álvarez: +1200 (tied-eighth-best)

Brett Baty: +2000 (tied-14th-best)

Analysis:

As you can see, the Mets have several different stars on their roster. Alonso and Lindor each have decent odds at MVP. Meanwhile, top-of-the-rotation veterans in Scherzer and Verlander are both getting love with top-five odds for the NL Cy Young. Lastly, 30-year-old rookie, Kodai Senga, has one of the best odds for NL Rookie of the Year. Both Álvarez and Baty are getting love for this award as well.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, preseason odds end up meaning very little. There is not one perfect way to project how a whole season of 162-games plus a postseason will end up. Especially this far out. Though, the bookmakers do usually give us a pretty good idea of what to expect.

With that being said, it is always nice to see the Mets grade out so well. It was not until about a year or so ago that the Mets were always expected to do so well and enter the season with such high expectations. Though, as owner Steve Cohen stressed when he first bought the team, the Mets are expected to contend of a championship once again this year.

Note, all odds are courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook New Jersey and are as of the afternoon on Saturday, February 11.

The holidays are here! Steve Cohen has already gotten Mets fans a bunch of gifts and we’re so grateful. But what’s the one thing still on our Mets list?

John Sheridan

Michael Conforto

Conforto was a Met through and through. We’ve seen him come through in big moments. He fills the need for a left fielder and a power bat. On that we should note the Mets brought in the right field walls.

Matt Mancuso

Lest I sound like Dudley Dursley, who during his birthday celebration in Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone was adamant that he should be receiving more and better presents than years past, another solid middle reliever would be a nice capstone to the Mets’ offseason binge. Even with the signing of David Robertson, the bridge to Edwin Diaz is still shaky. The 2015-2016 playoff-bound clubs didn’t just have Jeurys Familia holding down the fort; a combination of Tyler Clippard, Fernando Salas, and Addison Reed all provided steady late-innings relief. While there are a number of relievers currently in the mix for a late-inning spot, a 344M payroll leaves little room for error

Chris Bello

Adam Duvall

The Mets are lacking power in their lineup and Adam Duvall would be a perfect fit. Not only could he DH for the Mets, but he can play all three outfield positions. Duvall was hurt last year and only played 86 games, but clubbed 38 home runs between the Marlins and Braves in 2021.

James Villani

Adam Ottavino

The Mets’ bullpen is still a couple arms away from being a “comfortable” unit. Ottavino was terrific last year, adding him back to the fold would give New York five reliable arms in the pen, plus a plethora of potential intriguing options.

Next: Michael Conforto, he’s top on my position wish list. Would love to see him back in the orange and blue. Would also fill a need.

Honorable mentions:
RPs: Matt Moore, Michael Fulmer, or Andrew Chafin.
OF/DH: Jurickson Profar, J.D. Martinez, or Michael Brantley.

Patrick Glynn

I’ll be spoiled and ask for Adam Ottavino and AJ Pollock. That would fill the two of the remaining spots left on the Mets roster—a righty who can hit lefties and a righty who can get guys out in the eighth. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets remain active in trade markets, especially if they can get McCann off their hands, but rounding out their roster sooner rather than later will allow them to focus on wrapping up pieces like Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso for the long-term.

Andrew Steele-Davis

J.D. Martinez

While the Mets have made a lot of big splashes this offseason, they haven’t actually improved the offense at all. Brandon Nimmo was part of the lineup last year and, while re-signing him was key, the offense left a lot to be desired last year, especially in the power department. If this team is to compete in 2023, they need another big bat and J.D. Martinez would tick a lot of boxes. He can absolutely destroy baseballs for one, he can mash against lefties and he can also get on base at a high rate. The Mets need to address their lack of power this offseason and Martinez would be a really good and smart addition

Recently we have seen some Major League Baseball contracts with longer-than-usual durations. Consider Trea Turner‘s deal with the Philadelphia Phillies (11 years), Carlos Correa‘s contract with the San Francisco Giants (13 years), and Xander Bogaerts‘ contract with the San Diego Padres (11 years). Teams and players are free to negotiate mutually beneficial deals, but if contract length is being used as a means to get around the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT), MLB may have a developing issue.

As a reminder, here is how the CBT will work for the duration of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, which expires after the 2026 season. The tax thresholds by year are listed below.

2022: $230 million

2023: $233 million

2024: $237 million

2025: $241 million

2026: $244 million

A club that exceeds the CBT is subject to an increasing tax rate, depending on how many consecutive years it has done so.

First year: 20 percent tax on all overages

Second consecutive year: 30 percent on overages

Third consecutive year or more: 50 percent on overages

Going back to Turner’s deal, he signed for a total of $300 million over 11 years. When the contract is in its last year, Turner will be 41 years old, earning roughly $27 million dollars. Did the Phillies structure the contract that way because they felt Turner would be producing at a $27 million level in the 11th year of his contract, or did they do it so they could soften the impact of Turner’s deal on their payroll each year, and subsequently have more maneuverability to spend and remain under the tax threshold?

The same could be said about Correa’s and Bogaert’s contracts, and even the mega-deal the Yankees handed to Aaron Judge. What’s the big deal? The current CBA has some language that calls out CBT manipulation. In an article in The Athletic by Ken Rosenthal, the author summarizes the relevant verbiage in the CBA:

Baseball’s collective-bargaining agreement states neither players nor clubs shall enter into any agreement “designed to defeat or circumvent the intention” of the luxury tax. The language is vague, subject to interpretation. But if the league determined a circumvention occurred, it conceivably could ask the parties to restructure the contract, most likely by agreeing to a shorter term, or reject the deal entirely.

It’s hard to see a contract challenge by either side ending well. It was less than one year ago that we lived through a 99-day lockout, full of blaming, mistrust, and rhetoric. The players would certainly view a challenge by the owners as a way of restricting spending on contracts, and they probably would be correct.

Could this potential issue have been avoided? Yes, it could, if MLB had modeled the National Basketball Association or the National Hockey League. Both leagues have salary caps, and both have implemented contract length restrictions to avoid cap work-around tactics. From Rosenthal’s article:

The NBA’s maximum contract length is five years. The NHL’s maximum is eight years for teams that re-sign their own players, and seven for players signing a free-agent deal with a new team. The NFL has no maximum. Donovan McNabb’s 12-year extension in 2002 is the longest deal in league history, but only $20 million of his potential $115 million was guaranteed. The NFL, unlike the three other major North American sports leagues, does not typically guarantee multi-year contracts for veteran players.

If there have been no challenges to date on contract length, when seemingly at least part of the intent has been to preserve spending room under the tax threshold, that may not be the case forever. According to Rosenthal, the Phillies discussed offering Bryce Harper a 20-year contract, before agreeing with the star outfielder on a 13-year deal. This was before the 2019 season, so not very long ago. Further, there is speculation that the Padres considered offering Judge a 14-year extended deal.

At some point, there likely will be a challenge on contract length as a way to circumvent the CBT. The small-market owners already take issue with the spending habits of the large-market owners. Imagine if, perhaps Steve Cohen, signs a player to a 20-year, mega-contract. Not only would he be doing something that smaller clubs say they cannot do, but if the Mets were able to spread the money thinly enough to stay under the CBT threshold, they will not have to contribute to the fund that provides revenue for the Pirates and Orioles of the world.

This contract-length story may be worth watching. MLB doesn’t need more labor strife, but storm clouds may be forming on this one. If not now, this matter may become a sticking point in the next CBA negotiations.

It’s safe to say no one wants to go through that, especially the fans.

Jacob deGrom could end up remaining a New York Met if all is equal in free agency and the contract offer he receives from the front office is similar to the ones he gets from other teams.

Per Mike Puma of The New York Post, sources indicate that deGrom would prefer to remain in Queens with the only major league organization he’s ever known, provided there isn’t a massive difference between what’s put on the table from other teams throughout the free agency process.

It has been widely reported that the two-time Cy Young Award winner is looking to reset the market for starting pitchers by landing a mega deal that exceeds the $130 million contract Max Scherzer signed with the Mets last winter. After opting out of his contract, which he always intended to do, deGrom is one of the biggest names available on the open market and the likes of the Rangers, Dodgers, Cubs and Yankees could all be in play for one of the best starters in all of baseball.

Interestingly, Puma notes in his story that, per a source, deGrom has winning high on his priority list when it comes to choosing his next destination and he believes that the Mets are now in a position to compete for the World Series year after year after year. After all, Cohen has used his billions to revamp the roster and that is set to continue this offseason with the front office looking to build a sustainable winner.

Players from the past and present have also revealed that deGrom has made it clear to them that he wants to remain a Met, but it seems that he will go wherever the best offer is. According to Puma, the Mets would be willing to give their ace the money he so desires but on a shorter contract that has the option for additional seasons based on reaching and achieving certain incentives. It is believed that the front office is reluctant to give a long-term deal to a 34-year-old who has struggled to stay on the field over the course of the last two seasons.

Puma notes in his story that the Mets would be willing to give deGrom a higher average annual value than Scherzer’s $43.3 million, but it does seem as though there is a ceiling in place when it comes to the length of any potential contract. If another team is willing to go longer and give a four or five-year deal to deGrom, then that could be enough to seal his fate when it comes to his future at Citi Field.

All signs do point towards deGrom remaining in a Mets uniform in 2023 and beyond, and that would be a huge boost for a team that still needs to rebuild its rotation. Currently, only Scherzer and Carlos Carrasco are under contract for next year with Taijuan Walker and Chris Bassitt also hitting free agency, while David Peterson and Tylor Megill could be in line for potential bigger roles at the bottom of the rotation.

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander is reportedly being considered as a potential replacement for deGrom, although the veteran starter would also command a deal similar to the one Scherzer signed last year. As we explored here, giving a long-term contract to Verlander carries significant risk given he will be 40-years-old in 2023 and he has only just returned from Tommy John Surgery.

In any case, keeping deGrom is Plan A for the Mets and that shouldn’t come as any real surprise to anyone. The righty holds extreme importance to the team and he is very much considered a key franchise cornerstone that demands huge respect at and away from the ballpark. Plus, despite suffering with injury troubles for much of the past two seasons, deGrom absolutely dominated upon making his long-awaited return to the mound in 2022. After making his season debut on August 2, the ace pitched to a stellar 1.63 ERA with 63 strikeouts and just four walks in his first seven starts of the year. He did fade away somewhat down the stretch, but still finished the year with a 3.08 ERA, 2.13 FIP, 0.75 WHIP, and 102 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings.

Despite his injury troubles and inability to stay healthy in recent seasons, deGrom still firmly belongs in the upper echelons of best pitchers in all of baseball right now, and his body of work means that he does deserve to be one of the best paid starters in the game. And, in the light of this recent report, if the Mets can even get close to other offers out there in terms of both money and length of contract, then they seem to stand a pretty good chance of re-signing their ace starter and face of the franchise.

Updated Post – Nov. 17, 13:10 PM ET

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred spoke to reporters on Thursday with one topic being the investigation into whether or not the Yankees and Mets colluded to drive down the price of free agent outfielder Aaron Judge. Manfred acknowledged that the league is conducting an investigation.

“I’m absolutely confident the clubs behaved in a way that was consistent with the (CBA) agreement. This was based on a newspaper report. We will put ourselves in a position to demonstrate credibly to the MLBPA that this is not an issue. I’m sure that’s going to be the outcome,” Manfred said.

Original Post – Nov. 17, 10:30 AM ET

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Major League Baseball is investigating whether conversations between the New York Mets and New York Yankees happened regarding free agent Aaron Judge that would be considered a violation baseball’s collective bargaining agreement.

MLB is looking into the potential issue following an article published by SNY earlier this month that the Mets wouldn’t get into a bidding war over the superstar. “Mets sources said that they did not plan to fight the Yankees this offseason for Judge”, Andy Martino wrote about the Mets not wanting to bid against the Yankees for Judge.

The report caught the attention of the MLB Players Association which led to them asking the Commissioner’s Office to investigate. “Owners Steve Cohen and Hal Steinbrenner enjoy a mutually respectful relationship, and do not expect to upend that with a high-profile bidding war”, Martino wrote later in the article.

Recent CBAs specifically prohibit the sharing of information on player contracts, saying, “Players shall not act in concert with other Players and Clubs shall not act in concert with other Clubs.”

Rosenthal goes on to report that the league is expected to request the phone, text, and email records between Cohen and Steinbrenner. If the union files a grievance over the situation with the Mets and Yankees, an arbitrator will determine whether collusion occurred.

Looking at recent instances where there were reports of collusion takes you to 2006 when the owners agreed to pay the players $12 million as part of the CBA. That came from complaints by the players that the owners engaged in collusion in 2002 and 2003. In 2007, the players raised concerns again that the owners colluded to drive down the contract for free agent Alex Rodriguez.

The Mets have been essentially linked to every big-time free agent since Steve Cohen bought the team in 2020, but they haven’t been reported to show series interest in Judge.

Good morning, Mets fans!

As free agency begins today, Michael Mayer reports that Odds Checker has the Mets as the early non-Astros favorite to land Justin Verlander. Verlander has a $25 million player option for 2023 that he could opt out of to entertain free agency. Even if he does plan to re-sign with the Astros, it would make sense for him to opt-out of his contract and test his market value.

Verlander had an 18-4 record with a 1.75 ERA in 175 innings pitched last season and he is a nominee to win the AL Cy Young award. If Jacob deGrom does not return to the Mets, Justin Verlander would certainly be a fine replacement.

Now, it is time for the morning briefing.

Latest Mets News

The five-year, $102 million contract between the Mets and Edwin Díaz became official yesterday. Chris Bello has more on the story.

The Mets have declined their end of a mutual option with reliever Mychal Givens, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic. The Mets also claimed Tayler Saucedo off waivers from the Blue Jays. The left-handed reliever had a 5.40 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in his 28 1/3 MLB innings. Chris Bello has more on these stories.

Joel Sherman mentions a potential reunion between Michael Conforto and the Mets in this New York Post article.

In 2022, Major League Baseball introduced a new playoff format. This with a Wildcard Series as opposed to a one-game wildcard elimination setup. The fans have responded positively, as television ratings for both the Wildcard Series and the subsequent Division Series have trended upward.

Looking first at the Wildcard Series, the only other time MLB used this multiple-game, round one format was in 202o, when the postseason was more of a tournament due to the pandemic-shortened 60-game season. According to Awful Announcing.com, the nine games in the 2022 wildcard round averaged nearly three-million viewers. That figure is better than the television draw for three of the four Division Series in 2021, and the far better (64%) than the 2020 ratings for the first round of playoffs.

The highest-rated series of the wildcard round, not surprisingly, was the Mets versus Padres series, which averaged 3.6-million viewers. This figure was aided by the placement of all of the games in prime time, though Game 3 was up against Sunday Night Football.

Moving to the Division Series, the good news continues. Ratings for the 2022 Division Series were up 21 percent over the same round in 2021, making the 2022 Division Series the most watched since 2017 according to Front Office Sports.com. On average, 3.4 million people watched the 2022 Division Series.

Interestingly, in what may be the most notable trend of all, baseball’s postseason had a slight shift to younger viewers in 2022. From the Front Office Sports article cited above, the number of 18-34-age range viewers watching the Division Series rose 22 percent. Viewers aged 17 and younger were up nine percent. While modest, this is encouraging, as baseball has by far the oldest viewing audience of the major sports, which has not been a good sign for the game’s future popularity. One reason for the increased audience for the Division Series could be the presence of the New York Yankees, who were eliminated in the Wildcard Game by the Boston Red Sox in 2021.

The ratings news reversed, though slightly, in the League Championship Series. In 2022, 5.2-million viewers tuned in for the ALCS, and 4.6 million watched the NLCS. Last year, 4.7 million watched the ALCS between the Astros and Red Sox, and 5.2 million saw the Braves take on the Dodgers in the NLCS. In terms of national market size, the teams represented in the two 2021 LCS were from markets number two (Los Angeles), number six (Houston), number eight (Atlanta), and number ten (Boston). This year, the number-one market (New York) was represented, along with number four (Philadelphia), and number 28 (San Diego) to go along with Houston.

Overall for MLB, the ratings story is a good one. While some feel the first round should be best-of-five, and that may ultimately happen, the fans tuned into the best-of-three in an impressive fashion. With the New York and Los Angeles markets bounced from the postseason, it will be interesting to see how the Phillies versus Astros World Series does in the ratings. Usually, four of seven World Series games are scheduled for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when sports competition for viewers is fairly minimal. This year, because of lockout-induced delay of the season, four games are scheduled for Fridays (typically the worst television night of the week) and Saturdays (when college football reigns supreme).

For now, MLB can take the 2022 postseason as a win, with the jury still out on the game’s pinnacle event. Perhaps next season the ratings can get a boost by having the number one market in the World Series, with the team’s home games being broadcast from Queens.

The Mets won their fifth straight game Monday night, clinching their first postseason berth since 2016 with a 7-2 victory. Pete Alonso hit a monstrous three-run homer, and Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor hit back-to-back triples against Corbin Burnes. Max Scherzer retired all 18 batters he faced in his return from the injured list, earning the 200th win of his career. The only blemish against the Mets was Rowdy Tellez hitting a two-run homer off Tylor Megill in the righty’s first outing in two months. With the Braves also winning last night, the Mets’ lead in the NL East remains at just one game.

The Mets and Brewers continue their series tonight with Carlos Carrasco (15-6, 3.70 ERA) taking the hill against southpaw Aaron Ashby (2-10, 4.58 ERA). The Mets faced Ashby at Citi Field on June 16, touching him up for four runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Mets are reportedly considering bringing Carlos Beltrán back to the organization. The former All-Star was hired to be the Mets’ manager after the 2019 season, but he stepped down before he ever managed a game amidst the Astros sign-stealing scandal.
