Prior to Friday’s game against the Pirates, the Mets made a number of roster moves which can be found here. Of note, Griffin Canning was placed on the 60-day injured list while Mark Vientos was activated from the IL. One of the moves made, however, was the team decided to release former top prospect Alex Ramírez from Double-A.

Ramírez was once one of the Mets’ most promising prospects, particularly after the 2022 season when he posted a .782 OPS with 30 doubles, 11 home runs and 21 stolen bases across High-A and Double-A. His play had fallen off dramatically over the past few seasons, however, and he had just a .602 OPS in Double-A this year.

The Mets (48-35) dropped their series opener against the Pirates (33-50), 9-1. David Peterson had a second consecutive rough outing, while Juan Soto hit his 20th home run of the season.

The Mets announced on Friday that Griffin Canning underwent surgery for his ruptured Achilles. Canning will miss the rest of the season.

Geoff Pontes of Baseball America listed Mets prospect Jonah Tong in his article of 10 pitching prospects who had standout data for the month of June.

Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who currently leads the majors in home runs, has agreed to participate in this year’s Home Run Derby. He joins Ronald Acuña Jr., who will be the hometown participant, as the second known participant in the event.

Angels manager Ron Washington will not return to the team in 2025. It was announced last week that Washington would go on indefinite medical leave, and they have now announced that will extend through at least the end of the season.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, former Met J.D. Martinez currently has a non-guaranteed offer on the table from the Texas Rangers. Martinez has been working out in Miami in case the right deal comes along.

The MLB Draft League and Cape Cod League will play in an exhibition game against each other on Monday, June 30. Citi Field will host the game.

Mauricio recorded three hits, each with an exit velocity over 100 mph (107.7, 101.6, and 100.7), including a ninth inning 383-foot home run.

Chirinos has impressed in his three starts in the Complex League, posting a 1.59 ERA over 11.1 innings. The 20-year-old right-hander finished last season in the Florida State League with the St. Lucie Mets and is now aiming to get back on the track towards reaching High-A Brooklyn in 2025.

Every spot in the lineup recorded at least one hit as the Mets shut out the Nationals 7-0. New York scored all of its runs in the first four innings — two of those runs courtesy of Juan Soto‘s second blast of the spring. The Mets totaled 13 hits on the afternoon.

The lineup featured the closest resemblance yet of what the regular-season top of the order might look like. It started in the leadoff spot with Francisco Lindor, who had been 0-for-8 so far this spring. He went 2-for-4 on Friday, including a 103.5 mph single to lead off the first inning.

Both of Lindor’s hits came from the right side of the plate against southpaws Shinnosuke Ogasawara and Mitchell Parker. Lindor’s numbers from the right side, both last year and for his career, are just slightly higher against lefties than against righties.

Though much fanfare was made of the Mets’ 1-5 in the order, it was their No. 6 hitter, catcher Luis Torrens, who was the early-game hero. He went the other way on a 72 mph curveball with two outs in the first to put the Mets up 2-0. He singled again in the third, leading to a Tyrone Taylor RBI single that made it 5-0. Scoring on Taylor’s hit was five-hole hitter Mark Vientos, who’s had a slow start to the spring but singled to right field. Vientos later had an RBI groundout to make it 7-0.

Torrens is now 5-for-12 to start the spring.

The biggest knock for the Mets came in the second inning. Soto, naturally hitting out of the two-hole as the Mets’ best hitter, cranked a two-run homer to left field. Particularly impressive was that it came in a lefty-lefty matchup with Ogasawara still on the mound. Soto had somewhat of an inside-out swing and didn’t necessarily even appear to get all of it, but he unleashed it 106 mph the other way and all the way over the wall.

Both of Soto’s spring home runs have been to the opposite field. In 2024, Soto hit 41 home runs — 22 of them were pulled, 10 were to center field and nine were hit the other way. Soto batted .374 with a 224 wRC+ on balls hit the other way in 2024.

For his career, 56 of his 201 home runs (27.9%) have been to the opposite field. His career wRC+ on balls hit to the opposite field is 201, with a .389 average and 1.136 OPS. Those are higher than his numbers when pulling the ball or hitting it to center field.

Soto is no stranger to hitting well off of lefties, either. Last year, his wRC+ against lefties was nearly identical to his wRC+ against righties — 174 and 182, respectively.

Mets fans are getting to see firsthand not only how good Soto is, but how well-rounded he is. There are almost no holes in his offensive game — he can hit the ball to all fields and handle pitchers from either side. He hits for power, hits for a high average and of course has elite plate discipline.

Soto now has a casual 1.569 OPS this spring in his first nine plate appearances wearing orange and blue.

Batting third in the order, Pete Alonso joined the party with a fourth-inning double, hit softly to right field. José Azocar followed with an RBI single.

Azocar entered in the fourth inning for Nimmo, who rounded out the Mets’ core top five in the cleanup spot. It was Nimmo’s first action of the spring. He didn’t get a hit in two trips to the plate, but he did draw a walk in his first plate appearance. Nimmo posted a walk rate of 11.6% last year, up slightly from the previous two years. His overall walk numbers have fallen, though, from 2017-2021, when he was over 15% twice and over 18% once.

The Mets, after taking a 7-0 lead through four innings, finally had a goose egg in the fifth. Luisangel Acuña still recorded an infield hit in the frame as he competes for an increased role.

The Mets made a slew of defensive substitutions in the sixth, and although they didn’t score any more runs, they still got some contributions from the new guys. Top prospect Jett Williams had a single and a walk in Soto’s spot. Azocar, with his hit in Nimmo’s original spot, is now 3-for-10 this spring. Prospect Alex Ramírez also had a hit to improve to 3-for-11.

Ryan Clifford entered for Alonso but went 0-for-2. He’s 1-for-8 on the young spring, though the one was a homer.

It was, overall, a productive day of offense for the Mets as they gradually ramp up for the regular season. With a top five of Lindor, Soto, Alonso, Nimmo and Vientos, they should be able to expect plenty of more days like this. The Mets have a generational talent in the two-hole for them now, a fact that fans might still be getting used to. And they have a pretty solid group around him, too — one that’s starting to flash its prowess as the spring wears on.

The Mets officially announced that they have signed outfielders Edward Olivares and Alex Ramírez as well as right-handed pitcher Grant Hartwig to minor league deals with invitations to major league spring training.

Olivares hit .224/.291/.333 with five home runs in 55 games as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024. He’s appeared in a total of 285 contests during his five-year MLB career with an OPS of .713.

New York also completed a trade for right-handed pitcher Sean Harney from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for international pool money. The 26-year-old was selected in the eighth round of the 2022 draft and owns an ERA of 3.90 across 63 minor league outings.

The Mets have agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Alex Ramírez and right-handed pitcher Grant Hartwig that will see both return to the organization for the 2025 season. Ramírez and Hartwig were non-tendered a contract on November 22, becoming free agents. The reunion with the Mets includes an invite to spring training for Hartwig.

Ramírez, 22, once a top-10 prospect in the Mets organization, gets another crack. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, Ramírez had a strong free agent market even though his development seemed to stall at the Double-A level. He hit .271/.342/.412/.754 in two Single-A seasons, .240/.316/.354/.670 in two High-A seasons and .210/.291/.299/.590 in Double-A. 

He remained on the 40-man roster because the Mets chose to protect him in the Rule 5 draft, but Ramírez never saw any big league action. A plus-runner on the bases, Ramírez stole a career-high 40 bases in 2024, leading the Eastern League. He can play all three outfield positions and has an arm that can suit him in right field. However, he struggles with reading routes. While he had seven assists in the outfield in 2024, he committed 10 errors.

Ramírez’s hindrance has been his bat. If he can find his swing again and limit the strikeouts, he struck out 123 times and walked 55 times, he can find success again. While never known for his power, speed has been his best friend. If he can better his contact and get on base, he can be a real threat and an asset to the Mets in the future.

Grant Hartwig

Hartwig, 26, has seen action for the Mets in the last two seasons, pitching to a 5.14 ERA over 42 innings, walking 19 and striking out 34 batters with a 1.405 career WHIP. While Hartwig pitched in four games for the 2024 Mets, he missed a large portion of the season when he underwent meniscus surgery on his right knee in June.

Hartwig has always offered above-average velocity and some serious movement on his pitches. He has struggled to locate his pitches and, despite his velocity, has a 7.3 K/9 over his career. Hartwig is primarily a sinker/slider pitcher who has used a cutter as his third pitch. He averaged 94.6 MPH on his sinker in 2024, and his sweeper has a high 2588 RPM spin rate that has generated a 46.2 whiff %.

Hartwig is a great story as he went undrafted in the 2021 MLB draft and was two weeks away from taking the MCAT exam to get into medical school when the Mets offered him a contract for $20,000.

Hartwig will serve as a solid minor league depth option who can hopefully find success with the Mets pitch design and development team to capitalize on his slider.

New York claimed Young off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on July 17. He recorded a 3.29 ERA across 13 2/3 innings with the team, though he was left off the postseason roster and was typically utilized in low-leverage spots towards the end of the regular season.

The Mets also non-tendered a pair of pre-arbitration players in right-handed reliever Grant Hartwig and outfielder Alex Ramírez.

Hartwig posted a 6.75 ERA in four major league appearances this year while finishing with a 4.34 ERA over 33 outings for Triple-A Syracuse.

Ramírez, whom Baseball America ranked as the No. 92 prospect in baseball ahead of the 2023 campaign, struggled mightily over his past two seasons. He hit .221/.310/.317 with a 78 wRC+ in 120 games with High-A Brooklyn last year before slashing .210/.291/.299 across 123 contests with Double-A Binghamton in 2024.

Then, he had what ended up being the go-ahead hit with a grand slam in the seventh, followed by another solo home run in the ninth. The six RBIs for Clifford are a season-high.

Ramírez did lead off the game with a home run of his own. He recorded three or more hits in a game for the eighth time this year and it was his second three-hit game of the month.

The seven strikeouts are the most that the 24-year-old right-hander has had in a start since he had 10 back on June 1 and June 7.

After a putrid start to the season, optimism is flowing for the Mets lately, with the imminent return of the team’s ace the most recent reason.

Kodai Senga intends to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week, the 31-year-old told reporters Tuesday.

“I feel really good mechanically and physically,” Senga said through an interpreter.

Senga has dealt with a capsule strain in his right shoulder, as well as nerve inflammation in his triceps.

On Sunday he faced live hitters for the first time, throwing 22 pitches, and will throw another session on Thursday.

Senga’s return provides a potentially monumental boost for a Mets squad that is playing its best baseball of the season in recent weeks, winning 11 of its last 14 games.

There were many standout performers this past week in the Mets’ system, but none more than Alex Ramírez in Binghamton and Gregori Louis in St. Lucie. Ramírez looked like the superstar prospect the Mets expect him to be, while Louis showed what he can do by putting together two hitless outings.

Triple-A

The Syracuse Mets won their series against the Rochester Red Wings this past week 4-2. Syracuse easily won the first four games of the series before dropping the final two. The team scored 34 runs in their six games, only allowing 23 runs. They officially finish the first half of the season in first place in the International League East division at 46-28, only trailing the 49-24 Omaha Storm Chasers for the best record in the league.

Luisangel Acuña stood out in a major way for the Mets this week. He went 8-for-19 in five games and recorded four RBIs. He also walked three times without striking out and stole three bases without being caught. Acuña has been red-hot at the plate as he now has his OPS over .700 at .702. He carries a 10-game hitting streak into the second half of the season.

Ben Gamel also had a strong week for Syracuse. He also went 8-for-19 and though he only drove in one run, he scored four runs himself. Gamel has been one of the Mets’ most consistent hitters this year, and he now has a .961 season OPS.

Brett Baty only hit .190, but he hit two home runs and walked four times to put up a steady .822 OPS in six games played against Rochester. Baty continues to show off his power since his demotion to Syracuse, and he sports a 1.066 OPS in 14 games. Could he be recalled in the wake of Starling Marte’s injury?

José Buttó and Blade Tidwell were the two starters to turn in quality starts against the Red Wings. They both went six innings, with Buttó allowing one run and Tidwell allowing three. Buttó continues to be really good for Syracuse, as he now has a 3.13 ERA on the year. Tidwell is still trying to settle in since his promotion from Double-A as he has a 5.00 ERA with Syracuse.

Mike Vasil, who has been brutal in Triple-A this year, had a good start where he allowed two runs in five innings. He now owns a 6.75 ERA on the year as he continues to try to turn his season around.

Out of the bullpen, Max Kranick did great work by throwing four scoreless innings across three appearances. He has a 3.25 ERA on the year. Josh Walker (1.69 ERA) and Matt Festa (2.03 ERA) each threw two scoreless innings across two separate appearances as they continue their dominance on the season.

Double-A

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies won their series against the Akron RubberDucks 4-2 this past week. Binghamton won the first three games of the series before dropping two of the last three. The last game of the series was called 4.5 innings due to rain, which resulted in a 1-0 Binghamton loss. Still, Binghamton will take the series win. They end the first half of the season in second place of the Eastern League Northeast division at 35-32.

Rowdey Jordan had a phenomenal week against Akron, recording three home runs and nine RBIs in six games. Overall, he went 8-for-20 and had a 1.300 OPS for the week. His OPS on the season now sits at .754.

Alex Ramírez actually had a great week following a significant cool stretch. Ramírez went 10-for-24 in his six games with a double and a triple. He walked four times, striking out just once, and stole four bases without being caught. Ramírez now owns a .679 OPS this year.

Kevin Parada, another high-profile prospect not having the best year, also had a really good week against Akron. In five games, he went 6-for-14 with two doubles and a home run. His 1.215 OPS for the week raised his season OPS to .653.

Jeremiah Jackson showed off his power, hitting a home run and recording three doubles in five games played. He went 6-for-19 and raised his season OPS to .632.

Joander Suarez had the best start of any Rumble Ponies pitcher this week, throwing seven innings and allowing just one run. He allowed seven hits but didn’t walk anyone and struck out five. Suarez lowered his ERA on the year to 4.39.

Tyler Stuart also had a good week, making two starts although one of them was cut short due to the rainout. Stuart threw a total of nine innings and allowed three earned runs. He also struck out eight batters. Stuart sports a 4.72 ERA on the year.

Justin Jarvis made one appearance this week, a three-inning outing of the bullpen. He didn’t allow a run, allowing just two hits and no walks. He also struck out five batters. Jarvis continues to look solid for Binghamton, now sporting a 3.28 ERA with the club.

High-A

The Brooklyn Cyclones lost their series to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws 4-2. It was a low-scoring series, with Brooklyn being outscored 24-13. The series concluded the first half of the season but also began the second half of the season. Brooklyn finished in fifth place in the South Atlantic League North division at 33-33 in the first half, and the team now sits at 1-2 in the second half. In total, they are 34-35.

Given the team only scored 13 runs in six games, it’s natural that there weren’t many notable offensive performances from the Brooklyn Cyclones this week. Nick Lorusso, though, continued his strong season by going 8-for-20 with two doubles and a home run in five games played. Lorusso’s OPS on the year is now .864.

William Lugo also had a really good week, going 4-for-17 in five games. He also walked three times, giving him a .938 OPS for the week. On the year, he has a .646 OPS.

Unlike the offense, there were several great pitching performances from the Brooklyn staff. Jonah Tong looked great, throwing five shutout innings while striking out seven. His ERA since being promoted to Brooklyn is now down to 3.68.

Felipe De La Cruz also looked really good. He made one start, allowing two runs in 4 1/3 innings, before making a relief appearance of 2 2/3 scoreless innings. In total, he allowed just two runs in seven innings and lowered his season ERA to 3.81.

Jonathan Pintaro has made just three appearances for Brooklyn, but he has made a great first impression. His latest effort was a quality start where he threw six innings and allowed two runs. In 15 innings with Brooklyn this year, he has a 3.60 ERA.

Kade Morris had a similar start, also allowing two runs in six innings. It was one of his better starts since being promoted to Brooklyn, as he now owns a 4.85 ERA.

Low-A

The disaster that is the 2024 St. Lucie Mets’ season continued this past week as they lost their series to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 4-2. They actually won the first two games of the series convincingly (outscoring Fort Myers 13-4), but then dropped the final four games in uncompetitive fashion (outscored by Fort Myers 33-7). St. Lucie finished the first half of the season in dead last in the Florida State League East division at 22-44 and are now 0-3 in the second half of the season. In total, they are 22-47.

Jesus Baez had a great week, earning a promotion to the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones. Baez went 5-for-19 with two home runs, raising his season OPS to .782.

Ronald Hernandez also stood out, going 8-for-20 with three doubles. He had a .979 OPS for the week to raise his OPS on the season to .777.

A.J. Ewing went 6-for-20 in six games, recording a double and a home run. He’s still adjusting to this next level past the Complex League, as he has just a .675 OPS on the year with St. Lucie.

Franklin Gomez had a fantastic start for the Mets, allowing just one run in six innings pitched. Gomez has been one of the bright spots for St. Lucie this year, as he owns a 3.95 ERA.

Ernesto Mercedes also looked solid this week, allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Mercedes has not been as successful as Gomez this season, as he owns an 0-7 record and a 5.19 ERA.

Perhaps the best pitcher for St. Lucie this week, though, was Gregori Louis. The lefty made two appearances out of the bullpen and threw 6 2/3 hitless innings. He walked one batter, hit one batter, and struck out five. Louis has been phenomenal in nine games for St. Lucie this year, as he owns a 2.05 ERA.

Florida Complex League Mets

The FCL Mets went 3-3 this past week, bringing their record on the year to 16-19. They currently sit in third place in the FCL East division.

The two standout bats for the FCL Mets this week were Simon Juan and Yonatan Henriquez. Juan went 7-for-19 two doubles, a home run, four walks, and two stolen bases. His season OPS is .913. Henriquez went 6-for-12 with two doubles, four walks, and three stolen bases. He’s also been good this year, owning an .810 OPS. Jeremy Rodriguez continues to struggle as he now owns a .751 OPS.

Among the pitchers, Estarlin Escalante, Lucas Gordillo and Layonel Ovalles all pitched really well. Escalante threw four scoreless innings, striking out seven. His ERA is now 2.08. Gordillo allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings to lower his season ERA to 3.32, while Ovalles threw 5 2/3 shutout innings, maintaining his 0.00 ERA.

Dominican Summer League Mets

The DSL Mets Orange went 3-2 this past week, improving their record on the year to 7-8. They’re tied in fourth place in the DSL South division. Diover De Aza (.757 season OPS) and Yovanny Rodriguez (.684 season OPS) were two of the standout hitters of the week, while Emilio Obispo (1.50 season ERA) and Deivy Paulino (3.27 season ERA) led the pitching staff with scoreless efforts.

The DSL Mets Blue had a rough week, going 1-4. That dropped them down to 5-10 and in seventh place out of eight teams in the DSL East division. Rainer Reyes (1.140 season OPS) and Daiverson Gutierrez (.980 season OPS) were the two best hitters on the week, while Jose Guevara (1.65 season ERA) and Wilmer Lugo (3.68 season ERA) looked great on the mound.

Players of the Week

Offense – Alex Ramírez, OF Binghamton

Luisangel Acuña had a great week, but Alex Ramírez edges him out for Player of the Week. Ramírez had a great start to the year but has otherwise been disappointing once again. This past week, however, he finally looked like the exciting prospect the Mets believe they have. His OPS on the week was over 1.000 and he had a 4:1 walk-to-strikeout ratio and stole four bases while not getting caught.

Ramírez has been underwhelming for the second year in a row, but he’s still just 21 years old and he certainly flashes star ability every now and then. This past week was one of those weeks where he looked like he could become a superstar; he just needs to find consistency.

Pitching – Gregori Louis, P St. Lucie

It’s hard for a reliever to be named pitcher of the week, but Gregori Louis more than deserves that recognition. He didn’t allow a single hit while recording 20 outs for the St. Lucie Mets this week. Louis is more of an under-the-radar name, though the 21-year-old has a 1.75 ERA in 25 2/3 innings between the FCL Mets and St. Lucie Mets this year. In his professional career, he has a 3.36 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings.

Clifford now has a 1.138 OPS in June with seven home runs, four doubles, and a walk-to-strikeout ratio of 18:15. Though he is graded as a pure hitter, Clifford has been a three-true-outcome batter this month, boasting a .226 batting average over that span.

The Mets’ offense was dormant in the loss, going 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position while only one extra-base hit.

Luisangel Acuña had his sixth multi-hit game of June, lifting his slash line to .288/.350/.384 (.734 OPS) in the month.

A four-run seventh inning propelled the Rumble Ponies to a win Saturday night over the Akron Rubberducks. Led by another Ryan Clifford home run, and a four-hit night from Alex Ramírez, the Binghamton offense strung together hits to complete the comeback.

The Rubberducks went up 3-0 in the third inning after a Petey Halpin home run. Still, the Ponies were resilient and chipped away at the Akron lead with the aforementioned Clifford blast in the fourth inning and a Ramirez RBI-single in the fifth. Drake Osborn provided the game-winning knock in the seventh with a two-run single to center field.

Long-man Justin Jarvis was dynamic in the final three innings of the ballgame, striking five Rubberducks en route to his first save with Binghamton.

It was a woeful game on both sides for Brooklyn, who only got four baserunners on and struck out 12 times. In comparison, the Cyclones’ pitching staff allowed 13 baserunners and struck out only two BlueClaws.

Nolan McLean had a warm welcome in his first game for the Rumble Ponies, showing his abilities on offense. The other Rumble Ponies also showed signs of life, with Kevin Parada and Alex Ramirez hitting doubles and Ryan Clifford continuing to draw walks.

McLean will be on the mound to start for Binghamton on Wednesday.

Ramírez seems to be getting back into a groove, going 2-for-4 on the day, stealing two bases, and hitting what would wind up being the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Jeffry Rosa is continuing to struggle, going 0-for-4 with one strikeout. Ronald Hernandez ended his seven-game hitting streak, going 0-for-3.
