A source told former Mets GM Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio that the Mets, Blue Jays and Dodgers have each met with Kyle Tucker in person or via Zoom in an effort to recruit the four-time All-Star. The three clubs are considered the main competition for the 28-year-old’s services.

In other hot stove news, the Mets might be best positioned to trade for Freddy Peralta, according to an analysis by Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. The Brewers ideally want a young, MLB-ready pitcher in return for their ace. Rosenthal and Sammon speculated that the Mets could offer Jonah Tong, Brandon Sproat or Christian Scott.

The Braves, Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers also have young arms that may interest Milwaukee. Peralta will earn $8 million in 2026 and then become a free agent. In considering a deal, the Brewers are factoring in that if they hold on to Peralta this season and he leaves after rejecting a qualifying offer, they would receive draft pick compensation.

It would be a dramatic twist to the offseason if the Mets ended up with Tucker and Peralta. Who doesn’t love a dramatic twist?

Luisangel Acuña cooled off Sunday. A day after becoming the first to hit four homers in a Venezuelan Winter League game, he went 0-for-5 with a walk, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Acuña has been tearing up the VWL even before the outburst. He entered Sunday slashing .282/.397/.542 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 39 games. He had also recorded three triples, seven doubles, scored 41 runs and stole 12 bases in 16 attempts.

Rosenthal reports that $70 million of Alex Bregman‘s five-year, $175 million contract with the Cubs will be deferred. His deal is expected to be in the $30-$31 million per year range. Rosenthal also reported that after agent Scott Boras helped secure a five-year deal for the 32-year-old Bregman, he could be looking for a seven-year deal for his 30-year-old client Cody Bellinger.

The Yankees, Rosenthal reported, don’t want to go that long, and Boras “is not going to relent until later in the offseason, if he does at all.” The Mets have been linked to Bellinger in reports this offseason.

An MMO poll on X over the weekend asked if you could only acquire one player, who would it be among Peralta, Tucker, Framber Valdez or Bellinger? The results: Tucker (66 percent), Peralta (15 percent) Bellinger (11 percent) and Valdez (7 percent). There were 1,522 responses.

The Reds signed free agent reliever Pierce Johnson, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Johnson, 34, went 3-3 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.20 WHIP for the Braves last year. He struck out 59 in 59 innings pitched.

Much like former Met Pete Alonso, Bregman signs a long-term contract with a new team after settling for an option-laden contract ahead of the 2025 season. The righty opted out of his deal before this season, and now Bregman will move to the National League after a year in Boston, during which he slashed .273/.360/.462 in 114 games.

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman bats against the Detroit Tigers during the first inning at Comerica Park, May 14, 2025.

Bregman had spent his entire career before that in Houston, as a major piece of the perennially playoff-bound Astros teams from 2016-2024. He had two top-five MVP finishes in Houston, before his third career all-star nod in Boston last season.

Bregman has now set a new high mark for free agent position players this winter, signing for $20 million more than Alonso.

Bregman’s signing marks the first major free agent signing of the new year, and one of the last few big-name right-handed hitters is off the board. It remains to be seen how his market will affect other names, such as former Cub Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette, and Cody Bellinger.

Of the three players who received multiple predictions to the Mets, Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami was the most prominent. MLBTR believes he’ll receive a deal worth $180 million over eight years, with both Dierkes and Adams predicting that he’ll ultimately end up in Queens.

Munetaka Murakami. Photo Credit: Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

Murakami possesses otherworldly raw power, evidenced by the fact that he hit 265 home runs in 1,003 games with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball. The 25-year-old also belted 22 homers over just 224 plate appearances in 2025 while missing time with an oblique injury.

The youngest player in NPB history to win the Triple Crown back in 2022 with 56 home runs, a .318 batting average and 134 RBIs, Murakami projects as a first baseman or designated hitter in MLB even though he primarily slotted in at third base in Japan. The Mets’ interest in him will largely be predicated on what happens with Pete Alonso, and while Murakami does have swing-and-miss concerns as well as some struggles facing higher-end velocity, he’s the kind of talent worth breaking the bank for.

Another player who landed multiple Mets predictions was right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff, with Dierkes, Franco and McDonald all believing David Stearns will look to reunite with his former ace from their time together in Milwaukee.

Woodruff didn’t pitch during the 2024 campaign after undergoing surgery to repair the anterior capsule in his right shoulder, but he was his usual self when healthy this past season for the Brewers. After returning from a rehab assignment in July, he recorded a 3.20 ERA and 3.17 FIP with 83 strikeouts over 64 2/3 innings. The 32-year-old sustained a lat strain in September, however, which sidelined him throughout the entire postseason.

There’s certainly some questions about Woodruff’s durability, but he’d be a logical target for the Mets given their need for starters and his aforementioned connection to Stearns.

The final player who received several predictions to join the Mets this offseason was right-handed reliever Robert Suarez, with both Dierkes and McDonald guessing that’ll he be donning the blue and orange in 2026.

Suarez spent each of the past four years with the San Diego Padres after previously spending parts of five seasons in NPB with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and Hanshin Tigers. He was an All-Star in both 2024 and 2025 for San Diego while logging a 2.87 ERA with 134 strikeouts and 76 saves in 135 appearances over that span.

MLBTR projects that Suarez will sign for $48 million over three years, and if the Mets can’t find a way to keep Edwin Díaz around, than perhaps the former could emerge as a target of theirs over the coming months.

Among the players who received a single prediction to sign with the Mets from MLBTR’s panel were Alonso, Dylan Cease, Tatsuya Imai, Alex Bregman, Devin Williams, Nick Martinez, Tyler Rogers and Gregory Soto. Interestingly enough, there was little faith Díaz would return to the club, as he instead forecast to join the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees.

Game Notes

The Mets will get a look at Red Sox newest signees Walker Buehler (first spring start) and Alex Bregman, among others.

Three Things To Watch For

1. Paul Blackburn’s second start. The Mets have an opening or two in the rotation due to the injuries to Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas. Paul Blackburn is one of a few pitchers competing for those two spots. Over the last couple of days, we’ve seen the younger pitchers in camp (Brandon Sproat and Blade Tidwell) dominate in their starts. Blackburn pitched a clean inning in his first game, striking out one batter and allowing no hits and no walks. How far does he go into this game?
2. Rico Garcia. According to Saturday’s game notes, Garcia is scheduled to make his third appearance in spring this afternoon for the Mets. Garcia is in camp on a non-roster invitee deal. In his first two games, he allowed two hits and struck out three batters while not allowing any runs to score. Garcia had a successful 2024 for the Nationals in Rochester, posting a 3.94 ERA over 61 2/3 innings. If he puts up similar numbers for Syracuse this season, we’ll see him in Queens at some point.
3. A New Face in Town. Walker Buehler held the Mets scoreless over four innings in the National League Championship Series. He was a major signing for the Boston Red Sox this year who are looking to challenge the Yankees and the Orioles for the American League East. For the Mets’ bats, this presents a second-straight day to get some reps in against a serious starting pitcher.

Bregman was drafted by the Astros with the second overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft out of Louisiana State University. Over the course of his career, he has hit .272/.366/.483 with 265 doubles, 18 triples, 191 home runs, and 39.7 fWAR.

In 2024 Bregman hit .260/.315/.453 with a 118 wRC+ over 634 plate appearances. He had 30 doubles, two triples, and 26 home runs with 75 RBIs and three stolen bases.

Bregman has been a staple in the Astros roster and helped lead the organization to World Series championships in 2017 and 2022. He’s a two-time All-Star, a Silver Slugger Award winner, and most recently was awarded a Gold Glove award. In 2019, he finished as a runner-up to Mike Trout in the American League MVP voting.

The 31-year-old received multiple offers, including an offer worth $171 million, but chose the shorter offer from Boston because he wanted to play there, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reported. He will make $40 million per year, which is $10 million-plus more per year than other offers he received.

Bregman seems to slot in at second base for Boston, with Rafael Devers still expected to man third base. Bregman has played 32 innings in the majors at second base.

Consider the Mets out on star third baseman Alex Bregman. According to Ari Alexander of Click2Houston.com, the Mets are no longer involved in talks for the former Astro. However, Houston, the Blue Jays, the Red Sox and the Cubs are showing interest in Bregman.

The news comes after the Astros reportedly traded closer Ryan Pressley to the Cubs. Houston’s GM Dana Brown called a reunion with Bregman a “long shot” but noted the “door is cracked” for a homecoming.

Bregman recently won his first Gold Glove at third base in 2024 and is coming off a season in which he hit .260/.315/.453/.768. He’s a lifetime .272/.366/.483/.848 hitter in his nine seasons in Houston.

The Mets’ focus at third now shifts to a mix of Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña, and even Jeff McNeil. Of course, who will play where will become clearer when Pete Alonso‘s fate is settled.

Original Post: Jan. 23 at 7:36 pm

Earlier in the offseason, it seemed as if it was a foregone conclusion that Alex Bregman would leave Houston in free agency. However, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported Thursday evening that the Astros have re-engaged in talks with their longtime third baseman.

Back in December, Houston signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million contract, and acquired Isaac Paredes as part of the return from the Cubs for Kyle Tucker. At that point, Houston general manager Dana Brown said negotiations between the club and Bregman had “stalled.” The Tigers, Mets, Blue Jays, and Red Sox have all been linked to Bregman this offseason. Evan Peztold of the Detroit Free Press reported that Bregman is the Tigers’ top priority, but Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic previously said he doesn’t expect Detroit to spend on the Gold Glover.

Rome also reports that Houston is shopping two-time All-Star reliever Ryan Pressly in an attempt to shed payroll. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Cubs were nearing a deal for Pressly, but Rome said the right-hander hasn’t waived his no-trade clause. Pressly is set to make $14 million in 2025. If Bregman were to return to Houston, the club is considering shifting Paredes over to second base and moving Jose Altuve to left field. Rome noted that there was unrest within the Astros’ clubhouse about Bregman’s potential departure. Houston previously offered the 30-year-old a six-year contract worth $156 million, which is reportedly still on the table, and it’s unclear if either side will budge.

The post Report: Mets No Longer Involved in Bregman Market appeared first on Metsmerized.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic said on the Fair Territory Podcast that he doesn’t expect the Tigers to spend on Alex Bregman. Detroit recently signed two-time All-Star Gleyber Torres to play second base, shifting Colt Keith to first base. While third base is still open for the Tigers, Rosenthal said general manager Scott Harris likely won’t want to block top prospect Jace Jung from taking the everyday role at the hot corner.

“He (Harris) wants to keep paths open for younger players,” Rosenthal said. “They want to keep paths clear – if you sign an Alex Bregman, it kind of stabilizes the whole thing, but I don’t expect them to do that.”

Will Sammon of The Athletic said in a recent mailbag that he doesn’t see the Mets as serious suitors for Bregman, and doesn’t think it’s likely the team can sign both Bregman and Pete Alonso.

“So far, my reporting on the subject hasn’t led me to think of Bregman as a serious target,” Sammon wrote. “Things can always evolve and markets can change, but signing Bregman to a long-term deal would run counter to what I had heard (and reported here) a few weeks ago.”

Updated Post: Dec. 28, 4:37 PM

The Tigers are still pursuing Alex Bregman, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press.

According to Petzold, there is mutual interest between the Tigers and Bregman, but the two parties still have a gap in value for the gold-glove third baseman.

If he joined, Bregman would join former manager AJ Hinch and a Tigers squad that reached the playoffs last season for the first time since 2012. The Mets have been linked with the Tigers and Red Sox as serious contenders for Bregman this offseason.

Updated Post: Dec. 26, 4:06 PM

Jon Heyman of the New York Post said on Bleacher Report’s Walk-Off show not to rule the Mets in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes. Previously, the Mets were reported to have strong interest in the third baseman’s services. Heyman added that while the Yankees are also interested in Bregman, they may be done spending for the offseason. The Red Sox and Tigers are also among Bregman’s suitors.

Heyman also mentions that the Mets are focused on trying to bring back Pete Alonso, though he doesn’t know how close the two sides are.

Original Post: Dec. 14

The Mets continue to be linked to top free agents in the 2024 winter.

The club is reported to have a “strong interest” in third baseman Alex Bregman, according to Ari Alexander of Houston’s KPRC2’s Network (NBC).

Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

Bregman would be another addition to a Mets’ club that is hoping to return to the National League Championship Series and beyond in 2025. The righty slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 homers and 30 doubles in 145 games, along with his highest HardHit percentage (40.7) since 2019.

Along with his impressive offensive numbers, Bregman also brings gold glove defense at the hot corner. He ranked in the 91st percentile for Outs Above Average (6) in 2024 and was rewarded with his first gold glove at third.

Whether or not the Mets move on their interest is to be seen. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported earlier this offseason that Bregman was seeking an eight-year deal, north of $200 million. It seems high, but, if the Mets want Bregman, Alexander reports that the cost wouldn’t stop them.

“In terms of affording a potential $200 million deal for Bregman after the Juan Soto signing,” Alexander wrote,” those within the industry characterize the Mets as more interested in getting what they want than trying to adhere to any sort of budget.”

ALEX BREGMAN WALK-OFF HOME RUN! pic.twitter.com/z0gNHNmaQR

— Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) July 28, 2024

A deal of that AAV and length might seem outlandish for the soon-to-be 31-year-old, but Bregman is a Scott Boras client and could hold out until his market rises.

The Yankees, Red Sox, and Astros were also named by Alexander as the other teams in the “strong four” category to sign Bregman, but the Astros are most likely out after trading Kyle Tucker to the Cubs for a package including Isaac Paredes.

Before the trade for Paredes, Alexander reported the Astros had a six-year, $156 million contract on the table for Bregman ($26 million AAV).

The Tigers were linked as an interested team as well, and a reunion with former manager AJ Hinch is a possibility for Bregman.

If the Mets were to add Bregman, it could also spell an end to Pete Alonso‘s tenure in Queens. Bregman would presumably shift over to third base, sending Mark Vientos to first.
