2025 Review

Huascar Brazobán’s 2025 season with the New York Mets was defined by heavy usage and solid-if-unspectacular run prevention. In his age-35 campaign, Brazobán logged a career-high 63 innings over 52 appearances, serving as a mainstay in the middle-to-late innings. His results were respectable: a 3.57 ERA, translating to an ERA+ of 113.

Brazobán outperformed his expected results. His basic peripheral metrics were higher than his ERA, with a 4.04 FIP and a 4.20 xFIP. His strikeout rate also declined slightly, with a K% of 21.8%, down from 23.5% the previous year. Coupled with a still-high BB% of 10.3%, his K-BB% fell to 11.5%. While his walk rate slightly improved, his strikeout rate remained below the typical standard for an elite reliever. He continued to rely less on overpowering hitters and more inducing weak contact. As a durable “long man,” he was able to handle multiple innings, providing valuable flexibility for the relief corps.

A major storyline of his season was the dramatic shift in his pitch mix. Brazobán abandoned his four-seam fastball (12.6%) and cutter (12.7%) in favor of leaning heavily on his sinker (36.7%) and changeup (38.1%). The adjustment paid off, helping him generate more ground balls—5.3% more, to be exact. His sinker was central to his 49.4% ground-ball rate and his ability to neutralize hitters by inducing weak contact on the ground.

Brazobán’s primary vulnerability in 2025 stemmed from his inability to miss bats, which created a precarious margin for error. His overall swinging strike rate (SwStr%) was a roughly-average 11.6% and his whiff percentage was a career-worst 23.9%. The whiff rate placed him in the 38th percentile, down from the 86th and 82nd percentile in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

This issue was compounded by the changes in his pitch mix. While his sinker successfully generated ground balls, the changeup, his most frequently thrown pitch, yielded poor results. It failed to generate enough swings-and-misses to compensate for other deficiencies. Without a pitch that consistently missed bats, Brazobán was largely forced to pitch to contact.

Brazobán’s 2025 campaign did not come without turbulence. His season included a mid-year slump that led to a demotion. After a stellar start and a sub-1.70 ERA through mid-June, the righty struggled in late June and July, posting a 10.66 ERA over 14 games from June 19 to the end of July. As a result, the Mets optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse on July 29. Manager Carlos Mendoza indicated the goal was to stretch him out into a multi-inning reliever capable of throwing up to 40 pitches.

His struggles continued initially in Triple-A, including one particularly rough outing in which he was shelled for seven earned runs. Nevertheless, the organization continued their course of action, recalling Brazobán a number of times in August and September when the Mets needed fresh arms. He routinely covered multiple innings for the big-league club and finished out the year on the active roster.

Altogether, Brazobán met the statistical standard for a quality reliever with his sub-3.60 ERA and proved valuable thanks to his ability to pitch frequently and in mid-leverage situations. His reliance on the sinker and effectiveness in stranding runners were his greatest strengths, but his mid-season slide and diminished whiff rate remain notable concerns for future performance.

2026 Preview

Brazobán is projected to earn $1.3 million (per MLB Trade Rumors) in his first year of arbitration in 2026 and is a near-lock to remain with the Mets. The key question for management will be his role, given his outstanding performance in multi-inning outings. His splits illustrate how middle relievers are managed based on execution: when effective, he was able to stretch out. In 16 appearances covering more than one inning, he allowed just one earned run, registering a remarkable 0.29 ERA across 33 1/3 innings. In his ten outings of at least two innings (23 IP), he did not allow a single run.

Importantly, this success wasn’t limited to blowout games. Of his ten two-inning-plus appearances, only three came in games with a run differential greater than four. This profile suggests he may have finally found a place as a long reliever.

The Mets announced several coaching moves including that both hitting coaches, Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes, as well as pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, would not return to the team. Additionally, third base coach Mike Sarbaugh and bench coach John Gibbons will not be returning. First base coach Antoan Richardson, strategy coach Danny Barnes and coaching assistant Rafael Fernandez were all invited back for next season.

MLB Pipeline updated their top-100 prospects list and named Nolan McLean as their top pitching prospect in all of baseball. McLean finished his first taste of MLB action with a 5-1 record and a 2.06 ERA.

Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Nationals was their 11th defeat in the last 15 games, and this one carried more weight than most. It dropped them into a tie with the Reds at 80-76 for the final NL Wild Card spot. The catch? Cincinnati owns the tiebreaker, leaving New York on the outside looking in. The Diamondbacks (79-77) lurk just one game back, while the Giants (77-79), Cardinals (76-80), and Marlins (76-80) remain alive.

Manager Carlos Mendoza is maintaining confidence in his players.

“We’ve got to keep going. We’ve got six more. A lot can happen. That’s where we’re at,” he said postgame on Sunday.“You look at the talent there, we’re one hit away, making one play, making one pitch. We’re close.”

“It’s a tough hill to climb right now, but the boys in here are ready for the challenge,” Sean Manaea, who struggled on the mound Sunday, said. “We just have to put things together. If anyone can do it, it’s us.”

Brandon Nimmo acknowledged the stakes:

“It’s been happening right in front of our eyes, so yeah, I can definitely believe it. We’re down to the last week of the season, and our playoff hopes are in front of us. We’ve got to play winning baseball.”

The urgency isn’t just in the standings — it’s in the small details. Little things, such as misplayed grounders and outfielder errors, have cost the Mets too many games, and they cannot afford any more. Francisco Lindor, one of the players who struggled defensively this weekend, said it bluntly:

“We’ve put ourselves in this position, so we’ve got to find a way to get out of it. If we want to be where we want to be, those things can’t happen. Full accountability on that. I have to be better.”

Every at-bat, pitch, and defensive play is magnified in these final six games. The Mets have little margin for error if they hope to keep their postseason dreams alive.

Cincinnati Reds (80-76)

The Reds have now won five consecutive games, capped by a huge 1-0 shutout win over Chicago on Sunday. Their surge has flipped the Wild Card race on its head, and Cincinnati now holds control over its own destiny. Before their winning streak, however, they were swept by the Oakland Athletics in a three-game set.

Dylan Ross tossed a scoreless inning for Syracuse to pick up the save. Ross has pitched eight straight scoreless appearances (11 1/3 innings) and has a 1.93 ERA overall in 28 Triple-A innings.

Morabito’s offensive production has dipped compared to the past two seasons (OPS down .68 from 2024), but he swiped his 46th base of the year.

Santucci continued his dominance for the Rumble Ponies, lowering his Double-A ERA to 2.52. After some early-season difficulties, the 22-year-old left-handed pitcher is emerging as another promising Mets pitching prospect on track to reach the majors by 2026. Read our recent article about him!

Will Watson piggybacked Santucci with four perfect innings of relief with five strikeouts.

After quietly serving as the Cyclones’ most reliable bullpen arm, Banks has stumbled of late, allowing runs in three of his last four outings, including Tuesday. Lefty Franklin Gomez picked up the win with three scoreless innings.

The St. Lucie Mets vs. Daytona Tortugas game was cancelled due to weather.

The Mets Dominican Summer League teams wrapped up their season on Tuesday – DSL Mets Blue lost 7-2, while DSL Mets Orange won 9-8. Super prospect in the making, Elian Peña, wrapped up his impressive first year of professional baseball, slashing .292/.421/.528 (.949 OPS) and nine home runs in 55 games.

The Mets (63-53) lost to the Brewers (71-44) 3-2 on Friday night, ending the game when Starling Marte was thrown out at home with a chance to tie it. Kodai Senga allowed two runs (one earned) in 4 1/3 innings, while four relievers combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, but it wasn’t good enough as the Mets earned their fifth consecutive loss.

The Giants selected outfielder and former Mets prospect Drew Gilbert from Triple-A to the major league roster. Gilbert, who came to the Mets in the Justin Verlander trade in 2023, was sent to San Francisco when the club acquired reliever Tyler Rogers. Gilbert made his MLB debut with the Giants Friday night.

Veteran pitcher Alex Wood announced his retirement on Friday. Wood pitched for 12 seasons and was an All-Star with the Dodgers in 2017. He complied a career 77-68 record with a 3.78 ERA.

Despite a late ninth-inning rally, the St. Lucie Mets fell to the Tampa Tarpons, 5-4, on Tuesday. Randy Guzman, who has dominated since his promotion to Low-A on July 24th, left in the second inning with an injury. Prior to his departure, he hit a ground-rule double to raise his St. Lucie OPS to 1.076 – his season OPS sits at .889.

Pete Alonso hit a solo home run to right-center field in Friday’s game against the Giants. With the home run, the 249th of his career, Alonso is now just three home runs away from tying Darryl Strawberry‘s Mets record, and four away from breaking it. Alonso has been in a pretty deep slump lately, but before long he’ll be the new home run leader in Mets history.

The Mets (62-48) fell to the Giants (55-55) 4-3 in 10 innings Friday night. Ryan Helsley and Cedric Mullins made their Mets debuts during the game with Helsley striking out three in a tie game in the top of the ninth, and Mullins going 0-for-1 after coming into the game in the ninth to pinch hit.

Prior to Friday’s game, the Mets announced a few roster moves. The team announced the addition of the newest Met, Cedric Mullins, to the roster. The corresponding move sent Luisangel Acuña to Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets also announced that José Castillo was outrighted to Syracuse and Brandon Waddell is expected to begin a rehab assignment in Double-A on Saturday.

The Mets also signed lefty reliever Jefry Yan to a minor league deal. Yan has spent the year with the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate, recording a dreadful 7.28 ERA in 27 appearances. However, he recorded a 1.71 ERA in 25 appearances in the Dominican Winter League.

The Yankees announced that they released starter and former Met Marcus Stroman. Stroman struggled mightily on the mound this year, recording a 6.23 ERA in nine starts. The Yankees also officially added David Bednar, Jake Bird, Camilo Doval and José Caballero to their roster.

In their Yankee debuts against the Marlins, Bird and Bednar combined to allow six runs in the seventh inning, blowing a 9-4 Yankees lead. Doval and Caballero also made their Yankee debuts. Caballero pinch ran, stole a base and scored a run in the top of the ninth before recording a brutal error in the bottom of the ninth, with Doval on the mound, to tie the game at 12. The Marlins wound up walking it off in the bottom of the ninth, winning 13-12.
