Overview

The New York Mets drafted outfielder Carson Benge out of Oklahoma State during the 2024 MLB Amateur Draft. The 19th overall pick signed for slightly under slot, earning a $3,997,500 bonus (slot: $4,219,200).

Benge’s collegiate career was delayed until 2023 as in 2022 the two-way player had to undergo Tommy John surgery. In 2023, Benge returned to play and slashed .345/.468/.536, good for a sparkling 1.006 OPS. He hit seven home runs to go along with 43 RBIs. Benge walked (42) more than he struck out (32). In 2023, he also returned to pitching, where he struggled, posting a 6.69 ERA across 35 innings. Benge walked 24, which was his main issue, while only striking out 35.

Thanks to those 2023 performances, Benge was given freshman All-American honors from the NCBWA. He was also named to the All-Big 12 First Team as a utility player and was on the second team as an outfielder. He was an unanimous selection to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.

Benge parlayed that first-year success into more successes in 2024. He slashed .335/.444/.665, good for another strong 1.109 OPS. He improved his power, as he hit 18 home runs across 248 at-bats. Benge added 64 RBIs, 10 stolen bases, and 72 runs. His strikeout to walk rate was almost one, as he struck out 51 times compared to 49 walks. The pitching also improved mightily in 2024, as he posted a 3.16 ERA across 37 innings to go along with only 11 walks and 44 strikeouts.

In 2024, as a result of his performances, Benge was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and then subsequently drafted by the Mets. Benge ended his season with Single-A St. Lucie, where he slashed .273/.420/.436 (.857) across 55 at-bats in his first taste of professional baseball. He played predominantly center field in St. Lucie.

As a result of his performances, Benge is now valued as some as a top-100 prospect in baseball. The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native has shown terrific bat-to-ball skills. Combined with a great eye, he should be able to hit for average with a strong on-base percentage. There is also enough pop in the bat to be a 20-plus home run hitter at the big league level one day. In the field, he has decent speed, combined with a very solid arm, meaning, he should be able to play in center.

2025 Outlook

Benge will likely start the season with Single-A St. Lucie. If he picks up where he started through only 55 professional at-bats last season, he should be on the fast track to High-A Brooklyn. At 22-years-old there is a chance he can escalate through the minor league system at a pretty fast rate. His current tool set only accelerates the possibility of that happening.

Benge, an outfielder, is 21 years old and spent his college career at Oklahoma State. In his last season with the Cowboys he posted a 1.109 OPS and almost walked as much as he struck out (49:51). He ended the season with Low-A St. Lucie, where he has an .857 OPS across 55 at-bats.

Benge is one of five Mets prospects to find themselves inside MLB Pipeline’s initial top-100 rankings. He joins pitcher Brandon Sproat (No. 40), infielder/outfielder Jett Williams (No. 52), outfielder Drew Gilbert (No. 74), and first baseman/outfielder Ryan Clifford (No. 87).

With five top-100 prospects, the Mets are tied with several for the third most in the major leagues. It is certainly safe to say the Mets’ system is continuing to be on the rise.

New York Mets first-round pick Carson Benge announced on Instagram he has signed with the team. The 21-year-old split his time between pitching and playing outfield for Oklahoma State this season.

The junior posted a triple-slash of .335/.444/.665 for the year with 18 homers and 64 RBIs. On the mound, he posted a 3.16 ERA over 37 innings with 44 strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP.

The Mets have now signed every pick from the 2024 draft except for ninth-rounder RHP Jaxon Jelkin and 20th-rounder SS Adam Haight.

The New York Mets announced they’ve signed eight of their 2024 MLB draft picks, including second-rounder lefty Jonathan Santucci. These are the first draft pick signings of 2024.

Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline reports the Mets gave Santucci full slot value of $2,031,700 for the 46th overall pick.

The Mets’ full bonus draft pool is $9,572,200.

The Mets also announced they’ve signed non-drafted players RHP Channing Austin, RHP Hoss Brewer, RHP Hayden Cooper, RHP Eldridge Armstrong and RHP Hunter Hodges.

Out of the ten picks that the Mets made on Tuesday, seven were pitchers, and all were right-handed arms. They also returned to schools that they took on Days 1 and 2 when they selected players from Houston and USC.

The Mets began Day 3 by going with a New Yorker in Round 11 in Nick Roselli, a second baseman out of Binghamton University. Roselli is from Levittown, New York and is coming off a strong 2024 season with the Bearcats where he had a slash line of .388/.492/.738 with eight home runs, 21 RBIs, as many walks as strikeouts (21), and an .OPS of 1.230.

Roselli missed some time early in the season with a hand injury and he was still able to have an impressive season in the America East Conference. As Brian Recca from Prospects Live points out, the left-handed hitting second baseman shows a good approach at the plate and has good bat speed.

The pitching trend began for the Mets in round 12 with the selection of Kansas right-hander Ethan Lanthier. Lanthier transferred from St. Cloud State to Kansas for the 2024 season and the reliever had 42 strikeouts to 19 walks in 37 innings of work.

Kansas’s coach, Dan Fitzgerland, had some comments about Lanthier after the draft and mentioned how the key pitch to watch for him in terms of his offspeed stuff is going to be the slider.

“(Lanthier) has a huge fastball and great feel for a well-above-average slider. He’s a great competitor and an outstanding teammate.”

In round 13, the Mets shifted their focus out west by selecting Oregon right-hander R.J. Gordon. Gordon missed the entire 2023 season and had his first year as a starter this past year (Opening Day starter). In 17 starts, the 22-year-old right-hander pitched to a 5.13 ERA and had 87 strikeouts to 46 walks in 93 2/3 innings.

Gordon was second in the Pac-12 in innings pitched and had the most starts of any pitcher.

Gordon sat out the 2023 season due to getting an internal brace repair in the UCL. He told the media before the season that it wasn’t torn. In addition to his fastball, changeup, and curveball, the right-hander mentioned adding a cutter into the arsenal this year.

In addition to learning the cutter, Prospects Live pointed out back in June that Gordon might have a sweeper to go-to as well.

“Well, it looks like before his March 15th start vs Cal, Gordon added a sweeper full-time and is throwing his cutter harder. Averaging 13 inches of sweep at 83 MPH, this sweeper has the makings of a true out pitch vs right-handed hitters.”

In Round 14, the Mets made an intriguing selection by picking Texas right-hander Tanner Witt. Witt had an excellent start to his collegiate career, but he had Tommy John surgery in 2022. He was picked by the Orioles in the 18th round last year, but decided to go back to the Longhorns.

Witt only appeared in five games this past season, and he had more walks (8) than strikeouts (6) and allowed four home runs over 9 1/3 innings of work. His fastball is around 90-94 mph, and his curveball is strong.

Witt also had a cleanup procedure for scar tissue in his elbow, which caused him not to pitch much this year. This is a pick where the Mets hope Witt shows some of the dominance he had when he was a hyped-up draft prospect in 2020. Hopefully, Witt’s loyalty to Texas won’t end up costing him a good professional career.

The Mets went back to Houston for Round 15 to take right-handed pitcher Owen Woodward. Woodward was mainly a reliever with the Cougars. In 10 outings (1 start), his command popped off the page with 36 strikeouts to only four walks in 23 1/3 innings.

His one start came against Texas on April 12. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowed one run on one hit, and struck out 10 on 71 pitches. However, Woodward left that game with an elbow injury and did not make another appearance the rest of the season.

Unfortunately, Woodward’s headlines don’t just include his pitching. Back in 2022, when he was at Weatherford College, Woodward allowed a home run. As the player was rounding third base, he ended up tackling that player after Phillips said something to him before the tackle.

For Round 16, the Mets return to the West Coast to take USC right-hander Josh Blum. Unlike Will Watson from Day 2, Blum pitched out of the bullpen for the Trojans and had a 1.87 ERA in 27 games (10 saves). He had 45 strikeouts to 11 walks in 33 2/3 innings.

Blum was one of the better closers in the country. He was 14th in the NCAA in saves and held opponents to just a .154 batting average. In addition to a fastball that can reach the mid-90s in velocity, the tilt on some of his offspeed pitches can help him bring deception as a closer in pro ball.

The Mets took a brief break from the pitching in Round 17 by going with Miami (FL) outfielder Jacoby Long. Long mainly played left field and center field with the Hurricanes. In 53 games last year, he had a slash line of .303/.371/.446 with four home runs, 24 RBIs, and ten stolen bases in his first full season as the starter.

Long is a player who will be known more for his speed, which helped him make some fantastic catches in the ACC.

The Mets went the high school route for two of their last three picks. It started in round 18 with the selection of right-hander Jace Hampson from Lynwood High School (Washington). Hampson is an Oregon commit. When he was at the West Coast League last summer, he mentioned he grew up playing shortstop despite being recognized for his above-average skills at third base.

For round 19, the Mets went with North Southeastern University right-hander Frank Elissalt. Elissalt transferred from La Salle to Division II North Southeastern. This past season, he made 19 appearances (three starts) and had 62 strikeouts to 17 walks in 51 innings.

What stands out about Elissalt is going to be his fastball. While at the MLB Draft League in 2022, he had one of the best spin rates on his fastball of any pitcher in the league.

The Mets returned to a Washington high school player for shortstop Adam Haight from Cedar Park Christian High School for their final pick. Haight is a commit to Oregon State.

If he decides to sign a pro contract, he shows good potential with his approach at the plate.

The Mets have also signed the following undrafted players: RHP Hoss Brewer, RHP Chandler Marsh (fastball up to 99 mph) and RHP Hayden Cooper.

Dohm, 21, stands at 6’4 and 210 pounds. He transferred to Mississippi State from Ball State after spending one year with the Ball State Cardinals. He was ranked No. 165 by MLB Pipeline.

The junior right-hander had a terrific year playing for the Bulldogs in 2024 against some of the best amateur bats in the SEC. He posted a 1.23 ERA over 29.1 innings pitched and helped lead his team to the NCAA Regional.

Dohm profiles as a mid-rotation arm that can overpower batters with his three-pitch mix. He features an electric fastball that sits around 94 mph and can hit 97 mph, but it’s not just the velocity that makes his fastball electric; it’s the explosive carry that makes it a threat.

He also contains two solid breaking pitches, a slider, and a curve. Both pitches can get whiffs, but the mid-80s slider has gotten plenty of empty swings, setting up his 79-82 mph curve as a lethal strikeout pitch.

With their third round pick, the Mets select RHP Nate Dohm from Mississippi State.

The 21-year-old had a 1.23 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and only 4 walks compared to 37 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings this season.

The 21-year-old has had some durability issues as he had some forearm issues as a sophomore, so that is something to keep an eye on for the future.

The night started with the 19th pick when the Mets took Carson Benge, a two-way player (outfielder and right-handed pitcher) out of Oklahoma State. The slot value for that pick is at approximately $4.22 million. Of course, the organization took another two-way player from the Cowboys in Nolan McLean during last year’s draft (Round 3).

During his meeting with the media on Sunday night, Gross mentioned that the Mets will talk with Benge about his future in pro ball, but they do envision him as a strong outfield player.

VP of Amateur Scouting, Kris Gross, said that the #Mets think that Carson Benge can be a five-tool player long-term.

Added they will have conversations with him about if he will both hit and pitch.

In 61 games as a hitter last year, the 21-year-old left-handed hitter had a slash line of .335/.444/.645 with 18 home runs, 64 RBIs, and a 1.109 OPS. In the Big 12, he was second in runs scored (72), third in OPS, hits (83) and home runs, and fourth in slugging percentage.

According to MLB Pipeline, Benge has strong potential with his swing and one of the things that he worked on in the spring this year was getting more flyballs, which led to an increase in power compared to 2023 (7 home runs in 59 games).

“Few college hitters in this class can match Benge’s combination of bat-to-ball skills and high exit velocities. A left-handed hitter, he controls the strike zone and uses the opposite field exceptionally well. He should have solid power thanks to his combination of hitting ability and bat speed, and he did a better job of turning on and lifting more pitches as this spring progressed.”

When Benge was at the MLB Combine back in June, the 6’1″, 184 lb. player talked about how hitting is his favorite thing to do because of the feeling he gets when he puts barrel on the ball.

“Hitting the ball is my favorite thing. Nothing can top that. Just being able to barrel it is nothing I have ever felt. Throwing is a close second.”

Speaking of the mound, Benge appeared in 18 games (four starts) this year and went 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA and had 44 strikeouts to 11 walks in 37 innings of work.

It will already help Benge that he was a roommate in college with MacLean, so he has someone to rely upon for his ups and downs when his professional season gets underway. When you consider that many draft experts did not think Benge would even make it to the Mets at the 19th pick, he is a player fans should be excited about for both the two-way aspect of his game and the power that is continuing to improve by the day.

With their second-round pick (pick 46), the Mets turned their focus to the mound in Duke left-hander Jonathan Santucci (slot value of $2.03 million).

This past season, the 21-year-old left-hander was 6-1 with a 3.41 ERA over the course of 13 starts. He had 90 strikeouts to 36 walks in 58 innings of work. He has battled his fair share of injuries in his collegiate career, whether it be having surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow in 2022, a fractured elbow in 2023, or having a rib injury during the latter portion of this year.

With that being said, this is a pitcher that has been deemed by many to have a lot of upside for not only a fastball that is around 92-96 miles-per-hour in velocity, but he also had a wipe-out slider that is one of the better sliders in the class.

“Santucci misses a lot of bats with his 92-96 mph fastball, creating impressive carry and running action on a flat approach angle from a high arm slot. His low-80s slider can be a wipeout pitch with two-plane break at its best. His fading mid-80s changeup gives him a third weapon, though he doesn’t use it very often and can struggle to land it in the zone.” (MLB Pipeline)

In an interview with Prospects Live, Santucci dug more into his pitch arsenal and the 6’2″, 205 lb. left-hander mentioned how he tends to use that slider to get hitters out on a consistent basis:

“I feel like everything plays off my fastball really well. When I am able to establish my fastball is when I’m at my best, especially in the top half of the zone with the carry I get. Utilize that as much as possible and be able to use my slider a lot, especially this year to manipulate the shape of it a little bit. a little slower, a little firmer based on the hitter. The changeup is the pitch I have been working on the most over the last year.”

Like Benge, Santucci was doing some hitting in college in addition to pitching, but he went to being solely a pitcher this past year. While the Mets wouldn’t solely be targeting two-way players, they do value the athleticism in what it takes to be able to do both hitting and pitching at the collegiate level.

It’s tough to grade any draft until many years from now, but the potential for Benge and Santucci as they enter their professional career is something Mets fans should be excited about.

Santucci was ranked 37th by MLB Pipeline, 50th by the Athletic, and 64th by ESPN.

Santucci is a southpaw out of Duke, who struggled with health during the 2024 campaign, but had terrific stuff when he was on the field. Santucci’s profile is driven by his slider. His fastball has some positive traits, the most notable being plus-vertical break. His repertoire is rounded out by a change-up, though, it was used sporadically in college. MLB Pipeline grades his fastball and slide both at “60” which is above average.

In 2024, Santucci posted a 3.31 ERA and 90 strikeouts as Duke’s Friday night starter. His 58 innings represented a career-high. He was named to the 2024 All-ACC First Team. Santucci did struggle mightily with his control during his college career. He posted 72 walks across his 128 1/3 innings college career. This leading to the “45” (below-average-to-average) control grade by MLB Pipeline.

Health has always been an issue for the Santucci. In his junior season, he underwent surgery to address bone chips in his left elbow. His senior year was cut short by a rib injury that cost him three weeks. He returned for two frames during Duke postseason, where he sat 95-to-96 mph with his fastball.

Despite moonlighting as a two-way player in college, Santucci was only announced as a pitcher. He only had 53 career college at-bats, posting a .685 OPS.

Will Sammon of the Athletic recently reported that the Mets were looking to draft, “pitchers with electric raw stuff.” Baseball America noted Santucci, along with Brandon Sproat and Blade Tidwell, represents the third college pitcher that the Mets have drafted after he slipped on draft night. Santucci early projections fit that profile.

The 46th overall pick carriers a slot value of $2,031,700.

Rounds 3-10 will occur tomorrow, starting at 2:00 pm ET. The Mets will make their next selection at pick 82.

Benge is a plus fielding outfielder who has a strong arm, and likely figures into the corner outfield picture longterm. His bat figures to take him the furthest of his two positions, and being announced as an “outfielder” might be an indication of what he does in this area.

The junior posted a triple-slash of .335/.444/.665 for the year with 18 homers and 64 RBIs. The left-handed hitter owns solid raw power for his frame, and still has room to grow into his body. However, some consider that he needs swing work, to address the high ground ball rate, to be able to fully tap into his raw power. However, if things break right for the former Cowboy, he could wind up a five-tool player.

One of Benge’s best tools is his advanced approach, which helped carry him to one of the best offensive seasons in the Big 12 conference. His bat speed is strong, but if he can let pitches travel further into the hitting zone and drive more, his power, mixed with his approach, can become his calling card.

On the mound, he posted a 3.16 ERA over 37 innings with 44 strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP. His fastball sits in the low-90 mph range and can top out at 95 mph, but his game speed sits between 91-93 mph. His future in the major leagues as a pitcher would be as a relief pitcher, which would obviously carry strong value if he is also a solid bat.

His fastball, mixed with a decent slider and changeup combination, made him useful as a back-end reliever. However, skepticism around his fastball exists, and if his fastball cannot translate, his pitching career might not make it far into the professionals.

“I would at least like a shot,” Benge said on both hitting and pitching. “Like to be able to do both, why not, it’s there. If one or the other suffers or my body can’t handle it then I’ll know, I’ll know it’s time to set down one or the other.”

Like his former teammate and now fellow Mets Prospect, McClean, Benge has shown plus stuff on the mound and at the box. Here is what Benge had to say when asked if the Mets had given him permission to pursue both passions.

“I’m pretty sure really they’ve been pretty open to it, a lot of teams have, but I guess we’ll still have to see.”

Benge marks the first draft selection under the tenure of new Mets’ draft leads president of baseball operations David Stearns and vice president of amateur scouting Kris Gross. Gross oversaw the drafting of an incredible 53 major leaguers during his stint in Houston as the team’s draft lead.

The slot for the 19th overall selection is $4,219,200. New York’s final pick of Sunday night is in round two at 46th overall.

Today is the big day. Not only will several lives change, but the trajectory of some teams can as well. The MLB Draft is officially upon us.
