Plenty of quality free agent options are available just a few weeks before pitchers and catchers report (Feb 12. for the Mets).

Kirby Yates saved 33 games for the Rangers, fanned 85 in 61.2 innings, and posted a career-best 1.17 ERA and 0.82 WHIP. The 38-year-old made the All-Star team and finished eighth in Cy Young voting. Yates’ 2024 teammate, David Robertson, 39, had 99 punchouts in 72 innings and pitched to a 3.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in his 16th season.

Kenley Jansen, 37, was 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA and 1.06 WHIP for the Red Sox with 27 saves in 31 attempts. The right-hander, the active career saves leader (447, fourth all-time), held batters to a .196/.271/.304 slash line.

Before he gave up a grand slam to Francisco Lindor in the NLDS, Carlos Estévez saved 26 games for the Angels and Phillies and pitched to a 2.45 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 55 innings.

Kyle Finnegan was 3-8 with a 3.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP while striking out 60 in 63.2 innings for the Nationals. The right-hander saved 38 games (second in the National League) in 43 attempts.

Ex-Met Paul Sewald, 34, had 43 strikeouts in 39.2 innings for Arizona last year with 16 saves in 20 tries. His ERA jumped to 4.31, more than a full run higher than in 2023 (3.12).

Some other right-handers still searching for work include Tommy Kahnle (2.11 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 46 Ks, 42.2 IP) and Kendall Graveman, who missed 2024 after right shoulder surgery. Graveman posted a 3.12 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 2023 with the White Sox and Astros.

If the Mets choose to add another southpaw, available lefties include Danny Coulombe (2.12 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, 32 Ks, 29.2 IP, Orioles), Tim Hill (3.36 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 67 IP, Yankees), Andrew Chafin (3.51 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 70 Ks, 56.1 IP, Rangers) and Brooks Raley, who threw seven shutout innings for the Mets before getting injured. The 36-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery and is expected to be ready for the second half of 2025. In 2023, Raley had 61 strikeouts in 54.2 innings with a 2.80 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

So far this offseason, it’s Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes and Griffin Canning, who the Mets signed Wednesday to a one-year, $4.25 million deal. He is coming off a terrible season with the Angels.

Canning, 28, made 31 starts and went 6-13 with a 5.19 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 171.2 innings. The right-hander led the American League in earned runs allowed (99) and gave up the second-most home runs (31), sixth-most walks (66) and seventh-most hits (174). His strikeout percentage fell from a 2023 career-high 25.9 to a career-low 17.6.

He tossed five innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts to beat the Mets on Aug. 4 for his first win in six weeks. “I think I was in a good spot mentally, not trying to be so perfect and probably hiding the ball a bit better,” he said after the game in Anaheim.

The Angels traded Canning to the Braves for Jorge Soler in October and the Braves non-tendered him, which made him a free agent. He is expected to compete for a spot in the back of the rotation with Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn.

Canning was a top prospect when the Angels selected him in the second round of the 2017 draft out of UCLA. He shot up the minors quickly, making just 30 starts before his 2019 debut. He showed promise in his rookie year, going 5-6 with a 4.58 ERA and posting 1.3 bWAR.

Covid-shortened 2020 may have been his best season, his ERA was a career-best 3.99 and he won a Gold Glove, but ineffectiveness and injuries plagued him in 2021 – he was sent down to Triple-A – as he struggled while pitching to a 5.60 ERA. He missed all of 2022 with a lower back stress fracture.

His return in 2023 was a step forward (7-8, 4.32 ERA, 139 strikeouts in 127 innings) but then this year he regressed, got traded, non-tendered and found his way onto Stearns’ radar.

Eli Ben-Porat, who contributes to Baseball America, likes the signing. “The Mets are going to look so savvy when they fix Canning,” he posted on X with a chart showing the movement on Canning’s pitches. He thinks Canning has a “very good” changeup and slider and would be wise to add a sinker to his repertoire.

Baseball analyst OC also thinks the Mets made a shrewd move, posting on X that Canning can be a “dominant swingman.”

Canning in 2024 was a four-pitch pitcher who threw his fastball 37 percent of the time at an average of 93 mph. He used a change (27 percent, 88 mph), slider (24 percent, 87 mph) and curve (11 percent, 80 mph) as well.

“An intriguing part of Canning’s profile is he gets above average velo from his secondaries while having below-average fastball velo as a pronator,” OC tweeted.

Canning’s career marks over five years: 25-34, 4.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 483 strikeouts in 509 IP. He has made 99 appearances and 94 starts.

Rundown

If you plopped the season 38-year-old Carlos Santana had in 2024 into his prime, it wouldn’t look all that out of place. In fact, in his age 29 season Santana hit fewer home runs (19) in more plate appearances (666) and had an OPS just three points higher.

Santana, who came to the Twins as a free agent last offseason, led the club in homers and RBIs, and he won his first Gold Glove, with his 14 outs above average, leading all first basemen. (To pick one random first baseman for contrast, Pete Alonso‘s OAA was -9, ranked 39th.)

“He’s making everybody on our infield better every single day, with the way he picks every single throw that we throw in the dirt,” Carlos Correa said during the season, per MLB.com. “I think when you seriously consider his numbers, there’s nobody better in the American League, numbers-wise.”

Santana, who came up as a catcher, became the oldest first-time Gold Glove winner for a position player and the third oldest overall, behind Phil Niekro (1978) and R.A. Dickey (2013).

Santana played 10 of his first 11 seasons with Cleveland (he took a one-year sabbatical in 2018 in Philadelphia) and surprisingly only made the All-Star team once (2019) despite hitting 20+ homers seven times in those seasons and walking 90+ times six years in a row. (He led the American League in walks in 2014 and 2020.)

Since 2021, he has moved around quite a bit, playing for the Royals, Pirates, Brewers, Mariners and Twins. Yet, he’s been consistent even as he’s aged. He has a .242/.354/.431/.785 career slash line to go with 324 home runs and 38 bWAR. In 30 playoff games, he’s slashed .205/.310/.365 with five homers in 129 plate appearances.

Contract

Santana played 2024 on a one-year, $5.25 million contract. He seems like a popular fallback option for several teams with a need at first base. The Twins are reportedly interested in re-signing him, and the Mariners may want to bring him back to Seattle, where he played 79 games in 2022. His agent, Ulises Cabrera, told Jon Morosi of MLB.com he wants to play for up to four more years.

Recommendation

He’s hit 23 homers in each of the last two seasons and 19 homers apiece in the two years before that. Until he proves otherwise, I would pencil Santana in for about 20 homers a year. Couple that with Gold Glove defense and he is a decent bet to outplay the one-year contract someone should offer him. I wouldn’t mind him on the Mets if other options (read: Pete Alonso) fall through.

Rundown

Jorge Polanco was traded to the Mariners last winter after a 10-year run in Minnesota that included an All-Star appearance, a 40-double season (2019) and a 33-homer campaign (2021). By many measures, he had the worst year of his career with his new team.

Polanco struck out a career-high 137 times, his OPS was a career-worst and down 138 points from 2023, and he grounded into 16 double plays. His defense fell off, too, with his outs above average at negative-10, a career worst for him at second base.

It’s unclear if he was playing hurt. Still, he had surgery in October to repair the patellar tendon in his left knee and expects to be ready for baseball activities in January.

But even at his worst, he hit 16 home runs, good for eighth among MLB second basemen, one more than Gleyber Torresand only four fewer than Jose Altuve (who had 211 more at-bats). The power was still there. He has hit 79 home runs in his last four seasons.

The Twins signed Polanco as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2009 and debuted in 2014 but didn’t see any significant playing time until 2016. That year, he posted a .757 OPS in 270 plate appearances and made 60 starts, mostly at shortstop.

He was the Twins’ regular at short from 2017-2020, with his best year coming in 2019 when he got the All-Star nod, finished 13th in MVP voting, and smacked 69 extra-base hits.

Polanco moved to second base in 2021 when the Twins signed free agent Andrelton Simmons, a defensive wizard at short. He played second predominantly ever since – that was all he played with the Mariners – though he did log 15 games at third in 2023.

His career slash line is .263/.330/.435/.765, covering 3,998 plate appearances.

Contract

The Mariners declined a $12 million club option for 2025, so Polanco received a $750,000 buyout. The Astros are reportedly interested. Given his age, disappointing 2024 and knee surgery, a one-year deal seems likely.

Recommendation

The Mets signed a 30-something who could play three infield positions last December, and OMG, that went better than anyone could have imagined. I like that Polanco is a switch-hitter with pop (and I will forgive him if he doesn’t have a pop hit up his sleeve), and defensive versatility is always good. Despite his awful 2024, I like him in a reserve role if he gets a clean bill of health. He would also be good insurance if Jeff McNeil struggles like he did in the first half of 2024.

Rundown

The end can come quick, even for a borderline Hall of Famer like Paul Goldschmidt. He was the National League MVP for the Cardinals in 2022, but this season he hit his fewest home runs since 2014 (excluding Covid-shortened 2020), while his batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage all dipped to career lows.

He led the NL in OPS (.981) in that MVP year. This year, he was 58th, slotting between fellow aging Cardinal Nolan Arenado and Jake Cronenworth. It is not the best time for the 14-year veteran to be testing free agency for the first time, but here we are.

The seven-time All-Star could still be useful because a) surprise bounce-back seasons by veterans happen, b) the four-time Gold Glove winner remains smooth in the field and c) he still hits lefties well. If a rebound doesn’t materialize for Goldy playing every day, a reduced role in a platoon at first base/DH, could work. He slashed .295/.366/.473/.838 vs. southpaws, with five homers in 146 at-bats.

Despite his age, he continued a career-long trend of being an opportunistic base stealer, going 11-for-11. In his last four seasons, Goldschmidt is 41-for-43 swiping bases. He is the active leader for steals by a first baseman (169).

(The all-time mark of 518 set by Jack Doyle, who played from 1889-1905, including stints with the Columbus Solons, Cleveland Spiders, and Brooklyn Superbas, is, alas, unreachable.)

There is an ESPN report that the Diamondbacks, where Goldschmidt spent his first eight seasons, may be interested in a reunion. Detroit, per MLB.com, is another potential destination.

Contract

The Athletic rated him the offseason’s 29th-best free agent and projected a one-year, $15 million deal. The eighth-round draft pick (Diamondbacks, 2009) has made $175 million in his career.

Recommendation

A lot would have to happen, none of it preferable, for me to be interested. Signing him would remind me of the Mets bringing in J.D. Martinez a year ago, which I liked at the time and had its moments, but ended with many fans scratching their heads at Carlos Mendoza‘s decision to insert him in the lineup in the playoffs. It wouldn’t stun me if Goldy had a nice 2025 – the great ones often find a way – but I’d let a different team take a chance on him.

Steve Cohen said Thursday the Mets are “still engaged” with Pete Alonso. “Hopefully, we’ll get there,” he told reporters at Soto’s Citi Field introduction news conference.

Alonso is meeting with teams, according to his agent Scott Boras, who also represents Soto. He did not name which ones.

“He is open to meeting with a lot of teams and obviously he has been doing so,” Boras said at the baseball winter meetings in Dallas on Wednesday. “Certainly his experiences with the Mets were extraordinary for both them and him.”

“We’d love to bring Pete back, Pete’s been a great Met,” president of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters earlier this week. “He’s had some enormous hits for us and we’ll see where that goes. I think our ownership has consistently demonstrated that there’s going to be resources when we need them. There is the ability for us to make baseball moves when we think that they’re there to improve the team, and we’re gonna continue to pursue a wide variety of areas to improve our team.”

Eovaldi, 34, went 12-8 with a 3.80 ERA and 1.1o WHIP in 29 starts for Texas this season. He was an All-Star in his first year with the Rangers in 2023 when he went 12-5 with a 3.63 ERA.

Robert Murray of FanSided was the first to report the Eovaldi deal.

The Mets had previously showed interest in Eovaldi, but that price might be a bit too rich for another middle-rotation guy.

With the Yankees signing Max Fried earlier Tuesday, the starting pitcher market continues to thin. The best starters remaining on the market include Corbin Burnes, Roki Sasaki, Jack Flaherty and Sean Manaea.

The Mets have expressed interest in Sasaki (they’re attempting to meet with him next week) and Manaea (there was reported increased optimism around a reunion). There are a couple more days of the Winter Meetings and the rumor mill is expected to remain hot.

Rundown

Trevor Williams was hurt with a right flexor muscle strain for much of 2024, but he was excellent when healthy, accumulating 2.6 bWAR in just 13 starts, his highest since he had his best season with the Pirates in 2018 (14-10, 3.11 ERA, 31 starts, 3.8 bWAR).

The nine-year veteran was 5-0 with a 2.22 ERA over 56 2/3 innings for the Nationals after beating the Braves on May 30 when the injury sidelined him for nearly four months. He came back to make two starts in September.

“He was one of the best pitchers in the league to start the season, probably was going to be an All-Star,” Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin said after Williams threw five innings of one-run ball in his return on Sept. 20. “For something like that to happen, it stinks. You see him every day coming to the field, the same guy, working hard trying to get back. Sometimes those elbow injuries stink a little bit and can keep you out a little bit longer.”

Williams was dealt to the Mets with Javier Báez from the Cubs at the 2021 trade deadline for Pete Crow-Armstrong. In his two seasons with the Mets he was 3-5 with a 3.17 ERA, pitching mainly out of the bullpen (40 appearances, 12 starts). He went to Washington as a free agent in 2022 and had a forgettable 2023 (5.55 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) when he gave up a major league-high 34 home runs in 30 starts.

The 2024 turnaround came after he stopped throwing his curve and started throwing a sweeper. He gave up just three homers in 66 2/3 innings, his home run rate dipping dramatically from 5.2% in 2023 to a career-best 1.2% this past season.

“I think we learned last year that, even with a pitch I’ve had success with in the past, I kept trying to go to it,” Williams told Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. “And it was getting really damaged. So, just try and avoid damage. That’s pitching. Try and figure out where you can not get hurt by slug. Thankfully, we were able to find that and ride that wave.”

His improvements in his peripherals were absurd, as his xBA and xERA figures increased from eighth percentile to the 86th percentile and the ninth percentile to the 79th percentile, respectively. The emergence of that aforementioned sweeper (.135 BAA, .142 xBA), which he threw 21.1% of the time in 2024, he instrumental to the new-found success.

Contract

Williams didn’t make the list of the top 50 free agents for MLB Trade Rumors or The Athletic. He is coming off a two-year, $13 million deal. Fangraph’s crowd-sourced projections have William’s next deal at two-years worth $18 million overall.

Recommendation

The Mets need a lot of help in their rotation. As it stands, there are really only two locks to the Mets’ rotation, in Kodai Senga and David Peterson. Though, with those two, Senga is coming off an injury-riddled 2024 season and Peterson had a career year. With needed help up-and-down the rotation, a healthy Williams would fit nicely, at that projected price tag, toward the back of the Mets 2025 rotation.

Not to mention, he has shown that he can be effective out of the bullpen as well, holding batters to a .682 OPS as a reliever with the Mets in 2022. That versatility could come in handy. Especially at a reasonable price tag at around only $9 mill per season.

With Blake Snell heading to the Dodgers (five years, $182 million) and Yusei Kikuchi going to the Angels (three years, $63 million) on Monday, teams looking for starting pitching like the Mets suddenly find themselves with fewer options to bolster their rotations.

Corbin Burnes (MLB Trade Rumors projects seven years, $200 million) and Max Fried (MLB TR projects six years, $156 million) remain the best available. A tier below those two are Jack Flaherty and Sean Manaea. Japanese starter Roki Sasaki, viewed by scouts to have ace potential, is expected to sign in January at a below-market deal as an international amateur. David Stearns went to Japan to get a look at Sasaki in September, though the Dodgers and Padres are considered favorites to sign the 23-year-old.

The Mets, with three holes to fill as Manaea, Luis Severino and Jose Quintana became free agents this offseason, have plenty of competition. The Red Sox, Padres, Cubs, Yankees, Orioles, Giants, Tigers and others are in the hunt for starters.

Stearns said after the season that the Mets would have to add starters, but not necessarily a “name brand” pitcher. The SP depth chart right now: Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Paul Blackburn and Tylor Megill.

“This isn’t new to us,” Stearns said at an Oct. 23 news conference. “We faced a similar task last offseason. We’re going to have to replace innings. Certainly a part of that could potentially be from some of those guys returning or we may look elsewhere.
