On This Date in Mets History

1972: Trailing 8-0, the Mets score seven runs in the top of the eighth inning and four in the ninth to stun the Astros in an 11-8 victory. Ken Boswell hits a three-run homer, and Cleon Jones delivers the keynote with a go-ahead two-run single. The win is the largest comeback win in franchise history.

2008: Jon Niese‘s big-league debut gets off to a rocky start as he allows a homer on the third pitch he throws to Rickie Weeks. Niese is charged with five runs in three-plus innings, but the Mets’ offense keeps pace with a three-run homer from Carlos Beltrán and an RBI double from Fernando Tatis. Endy Chavez hits a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th, and Luis Ayala strikes out Weeks with two men on to secure his fifth save of the year.

2012: Jason Bay continues his domination of Mark Buehrle, as his first-inning grand slam is the second homer he’s hit off the soft-tossing lefty. Bay has just five homers against all the other pitchers he’s faced combined, and this slam is the difference in a 5-1 victory.

2015: The Mets defeat the Phillies 9-4, and Ruben Tejada is credited with an inside-the-park homer when Domonic Brown goes flying into the stands down the right-field line trying to catch Tejada’s sinking liner. Yoenis Céspedes and Michael Conforto also hit homer.
