In this weekly feature for MMO, I’m going to look back at the previous week’s games and share some interesting data and information that I’ve collected through various websites such as Baseball-ReferenceFanGraphs, and Baseball Savant. It’ll be a mixture of facts, stats, and analytics.

Let’s get into the seven days between July 31 and August 6.

Mets vs. Marlins

The Mets recorded 19 hits (a season high) in their 9-3 win over the Miami Marlins on the road. It was the first time the team had 19+ hits in a game without hitting a single home run since May 3, 2017, in their 16-5 win against the Atlanta Braves on the road.

Mets vs. Nationals

Pete Alonso went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two walks, and an RBI in the Mets’ 7-3 win against the Washington Nationals in the opening game of the series. Alonso’s home run was the 133rd of his career, breaking the tie with Michael Conforto and giving Alonso sole possession of the 7th-most home runs in Mets history.

The launch angle on Pete Alonso’s home run in third inning was 17 degrees. That tied the lowest launch angle Alonso has had on a home run for his major league career.

This was the 33rd time in Pete Alonso’s career that he recorded at least two extra-base hits in a game. Among all time Mets, that tied Carlos Delgado for the 15th-most games in club history. David Wright is the franchise leader with 104 games.

Mets vs. Nationals

Jacob deGrom made his season debut and tossed five innings of one-run ball with no walks and six strikeouts in his no-decision. It was the 106th time out of deGrom’s 199 career games that he allowed no more than one earned run. That’s the fourth-most starts by a Mets pitcher in club history. Only Tom Seaver (152), Jerry Koosman (114), and Dwight Gooden (107) have more.

Jacob deGrom threw 13 fastballs that were clocked at 100+ mph in his season debut. As of this writing on Sunday, August 7, only four starting pitchers have had a game with at least 13 pitches at 100+ mph: Hunter Greene, Jordan Hicks, Spencer Strider, and deGrom.

This was Jacob deGrom’s 199th career start. That tied him with Jon Matlack for the seventh-most starts in Mets history.

Mets vs. Nationals

Jeff McNeil went 3-for-5 with three doubles and a run scored in the Mets’ 9-5 win in the rubber game of the series. McNeil became the first Met to collect three doubles in a game on the road since Yoenis Céspedes on August 3, 2015, against the Miami Marlins.

Daniel Vogelbach hit his first home run as a Met with a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning. He became the first Met to hit a grand slam as his first homer with the team since Adrián González on April 8, 2018.

Daniel Vogelbach had a 39 degree launch angle on his grand slam in the fifth. That’s the second-highest launch angle of any major league home run Vogelbach has hit for his career. His highest launch angle on a homer was 43 degrees on July 6, 2019.

Braves vs. Mets

Tyler Naquin went 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI in the Mets’ 6-4 win in the opening game against the Atlanta Braves at home. He became the first Met to hit two home runs in his home debut with the club.

Edwin Díaz recorded the first six-out save of his major league career.

Braves vs. Mets

Trevor Williams tossed four scoreless innings in relief in the Mets’ 9-6 loss to the Braves. It was the fourth time this season that Williams has tossed at least three scoreless innings out of the pen. The last Mets reliever to have more such games in a season was Rick Aguilera with seven in in 1989.

Braves vs. Mets (Game One)

According to Baseball Savant, David Peterson threw the hardest pitch of his major league career with a 98.9 mph sinker in the top of the first against Matt Olson. That’s over two miles per hour faster than his previous career high.

Over his last seven starts, David Peterson has struck out 54 batters. That’s the most strikeouts by a left-handed starting pitcher on the Mets over any seven-game stretch since Johan Santana in 2009.

Braves vs. Mets (Game Two)

Max Scherzer tossed seven scoreless innings with no walks and 11 strikeouts in the Mets’ 6-2 win in Game Two of the doubleheader. It was the 109th time in Scherzer’s career that he recorded double-digit strikeouts. Scherzer passed Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez for the fourth-most 10+ strikeout games in major league history. Only Nolan Ryan (215), Randy Johnson (212), and Roger Clemens (110) have more.

Max Scherzer lowered his ERA to 1.98 and has 120 strikeouts in his first 15 starts with the Mets. Scherzer became just the third different Mets pitcher to post a sub-2.00 ERA and strike out 120+ batters in his first 15 games of a season, joining Dwight Gooden (1985) and Jacob deGrom (2018, 2021).

Max Scherzer recorded 12 swings-and-misses on his slider over seven innings pitched. That’s the highest whiff total he’s had on that pitch in a game this season.

This was the 29th time in Max Scherzer’s major league career that he allowed no walks and struck out at least 10 batters. Only Hall of Famer Randy Johnson has more such games for his career (36). Curt Schilling is behind Scherzer with 27 starts.

With the win, Buck Showalter passed Ralph Houk for the 20th-most managerial wins in major league history with 1,620.

Since July 1, Francisco Lindor has posted a 174 wRC+. Among 57 players with a min. 125 plate appearances in that span, Lindor is tied for the fourth-highest mark going into Sunday’s game.
