Soto was pulled after the first inning of the Mets’ 10-3 win over the San Francisco Giants on April 3 after appearing to tweak his calf while going from first to third base on a Bo Bichette single. He was later placed on the injured list on April 6 with his calf strain,

The 27-year-old outfielder, who signed a historic 15-year deal worth $765 million with the Mets in December 2024, finished third in National League MVP voting last season after posting a career-high 43 home runs and 38 stolen bases with a .921 OPS in 160 games. Soto, who is on the IL for the first time since 2021, was slashing .355/.412/.516 this year at the time of his injury.

As for Polanco, Mendoza told reporters that he underwent an MRI on Thursday that didn’t show any structural damage. Though the 32-year-old is still considered day-to-day as he deals with Achilles bursitis, he isn’t expected to land on the IL as of now.

“We decided yesterday to send him for an MRI, just to make sure we knew what we’re dealing with” Mendoza said. “The good news is the tendon’s healthy… he’s dealing with bursitis. That’s the diagnosis there. He’ll continue to be day-to-day. He feels a lot better. He was hitting earlier today.”

Polanco, fresh off a 26-homer campaign with the Seattle Mariners in 2025, signed a two-year contract worth $40 million with New York this past offseason. He has slashed .200/.289/.275 across 45 trips to the plate this year.

It’s been a weird last two games for the Mets. Wednesday, they just lacked a spark, allowing five runs in the first two innings and eventually losing 7-2 after scoring two runs late in the game. Thursday, the Mets got on the scoreboard early thanks to a Luis Robert Jr./strong>. solo shot, but couldn’t pile on. Things fell apart late, and the Mets lost 7-1. The vibes were good during the four-game winning streak, and now they are down again.

It’s the start of the season, though, and as quickly as things can look bad, they can turn around in an instant. Hopefully tonight is the night!

President of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters on Friday that the Mets are optimistic Juan Soto‘s calf injury won’t be a long-term issue, and that he’s progressing as expected.

Manager Carlos Mendoza also stated that Polanco underwent an MRI on Thursday, which showed no structural damage to his Achilles, and that he is expected to avoid being placed on the injured list while battling through bursitis. He played in three-straight games for the Mets before being benched in the series finale against Arizona.

Three Things To Watch For

The return of Jeff McNeil. McNeil was drafted by the Mets in 2013 and made his major league debut in 2018, putting up a 3.0 bWAR in his rookie year. He would go on to become a two-time All-Star and led the league in hitting one season (2022) over eight years with the Mets. The Mets broke apart their old core this past offseason, and that included trading McNeil. He is currently hitting .258/.343/.290 over 35 plate appearances with the Athletics this season. McNeil’s competitive nature was a major hallmark of his Mets career, and if anyone is going to get a “bump” of adrenaline facing his old team, it’s probably him.

Get off to a hot start! Yesterday, the Mets got off to a hot start with a solo homer by Robert Jr., and then collectively did nothing. The Mets need a game where they start scoring runs early, and keep scoring runs throughout the game to break out of their current funk. Ginn has a 6.14 ERA in the first inning. He then settles down until about the fifth inning.

Pile on the Athletics. The Athletics are currently No. 24 in the majors with a .645 OPS. For context, the Mets are No. 12 with a .682 OPS. Last season, the Mets were No. 6 (.753) and the Athletics were No. 8 (.749). They’re struggling too!

Let’s go Mets!

Opening up the homestand with three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Mets dropped two out of three to lose the series and fall to 7-6 on the year.

While there were some standout moments, a hit-and-miss offense, poor defense, and some bad pitching performances ultimately doomed the Mets.

Let’s recap everything in the latest edition of 3 Up, 3 Down…

Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

3 UP

PITCHING GEM

Without a doubt, the highlight of this series for the Mets was Nolan McLean‘s stellar outing on Thursday. The righty was sensational, firing 6 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing only three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. It was arguably the best pitching performance of the season so far for New York, with McLean further highlighting his elite ability. And the numbers don’t do McLean’s dominant outing full justice. While the Mets went on to lose the finale, McLean stole the show in many ways and continues to look like the future ace of this team. I mean, he got 26 called strikes on Thursday, which is tied for the most in a game this season. In short, McLean is making accomplished hitters look average at the plate.

HERO BALL

Called up because of Juan Soto going on the IL, Ronny Mauricio delivered a real statement moment in the opener of this series. On a day when the Mets showed plenty of grit, Mauricio stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 10th with a chance to do something special. And he did just that. The infielder ripped a single to right field to score Francisco Lindor and seal the walk-off win. It was the fourth win in a row for the Mets, and also Mauricio’s first big league at-bat of the year. Talk about stepping up and making an impact.

SETTLING INTO A GROOVE

After a slow start to life as a Met, Bo Bichette is starting to find his game offensively. The former Blue Jay is looking more like himself at the plate, and he’s delivering the kind of results we all know he’s capable of. Over his last six games, Bichette is hitting .346/.393/.385/.777. That includes four hits against Arizona. Granted, there is still a lot more to come, but Bichette looks to be trending in the right direction.

3 DOWN

GROWING PAINS

The front office made sure that improving the defense was a priority this offseason, hence why it has become such a big talking point. Signing the likes of Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco to play new positions on the diamond ran counter to the organization’s stated aim. And, a couple of weeks into the season, the whole experiment doesn’t look to be going so well. There have been defensive mistakes in almost every game, including throughout this series. That was painfully evident in the finale, with both Brett Baty and Mark Vientos getting caught out in new positions.

Bichette is struggling defensively at third, while Polanco’s health has stopped him from getting many reps at first base. Even Luis Robert Jr., who is a natural center fielder, made a couple of defensive mistakes in this series. All in all, it is still early and there is plenty of time for the Mets to iron out these early defensive kinks.

STRUGGLE CITY

While pitching has been a strength to start this year, there was some regression against Arizona. Freddy Peralta has yet to really hit his stride. On Tuesday, he pitched just 4 2/3 innings while allowing three earned runs. In all, the righty is pitching to a 4.80 ERA over his first three starts as a Met. On the more extreme end of the scale, the concerns around David Peterson continue to grow. The lefty was pummeled early in his start on Wednesday, allowing five earned runs over the first two innings. He did recover to retire 11 of his last 12 batters, but the damage was already done at that point.

Then, on Thursday, Luke Weaver allowed two earned and two inherited runs to score in a game-changing inning. Weaver entered the game having allowed just one hit across five scoreless innings, but his first bad night as a Met proved costly.

LACK OF SUPPORT

The offense certainly didn’t help the cause against the Diamondbacks. After scratching out four runs in the series opener, the lineup was held to just three runs total over the final two games. Over that span, the Mets went a combined 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, leaving a total of 15 runners stranded on base. The lineup also struck out a total of 13 times over the final two games. While there were other factors that led to the two losses, the Mets will struggle to stack up wins if the offense can’t get anything going.

The right-hander set the tone right away, retiring the side in the first on three groundouts. After Luis Robert Jr. gave the Mets a 1-0 lead with a solo blast in the bottom of the first, McLean was able to protect that slim margin with ease. He navigated a second-inning double by Jose Fernandez by striking out James McCann and inducing a groundout from Alek Thomas. He also had a defensive play come to him in the fourth. After walking Ildemaro Vargas to start the frame, McLean snared a Geraldo Perdomo comebacker to initiate a clean 1-6-3 double play.

By the fifth and sixth, he was in full control. McLean leaned heavily on his sinker — throwing 44 of them — while mixing in his sweeper and curveball to keep hitters off balance. He struck out four of the minimum six batters he faced across those two innings.

“He was really good… he had everything working, especially his sinker,” manager Carlos Mendoza noted after the game.

McLean felt he was building momentum as his outing went on.

“Felt good,” he said of how he felt when entering the seventh. “It felt like I had a lot left in the tank, which is exciting going in for the rest of the year.”

However, the wheels came off in the seventh. A leadoff walk and a one-out single by Fernandez ended McLean’s night at exactly 100 pitches. He left to a strong ovation, but the momentum didn’t hold. Luke Weaver couldn’t strand his inherited runners, and Arizona pushed across four in the inning before adding three more in the eighth against Luis Garcia.

Despite leaving with the lead and taking the loss, McLean remained a supportive teammate.

“It’s part of baseball, at the end of the day,” McLean said. “I’m sure I’ll leave guys out there and our bullpen is gonna strand them for me… I know those guys got my back out there.”

Mendoza also kept the focus on moving forward: “It happens, but you gotta move on. You take the positives, and that was Nolan today.

The Mets’ $352.2 million payroll topped MLB for the fourth straight year, according to an Associated Press study released Thursday. The figure is below the record-setting $355.4 million the Mets spent in 2023 and up from the $322.6 million they spent last year. The lowest-spending team is the Guardians at $62.3 million, which is less than a million more than what the Mets will pay Juan Soto this season.

MLB’s average salary rose 3.4 percent on Opening Day to a record $5.34 million, according to the AP.

After the Mets came the Dodgers ($316.6 million), Yankees (297.2 million), Phillies ($282 million) and Blue Jays ($269 million). The Dodgers’ payroll would be $395.2 million if it weren’t for deferred money in nine players’ contracts, per the AP. The Mets have deferred money in three contracts and their payroll would be $360 million.

The Mets had the fifth-highest payroll increase compared to the previous year. The top four were the Tigers, Braves, Cubs and Blue Jays. The Twins cut their payroll the most, followed by the Cardinals, Guardians, Rangers and Nationals.

McLean was dominant in his 6 1/3 innings of work. The righty allowed just two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out eight and allowing very little hard contact. But in a move that was immediately second-guessed by many Mets fans, McLean was pulled by Carlos Mendoza in the seventh after putting runners on first and second with one out.

That’s when the floodgates opened for the Arizona offense. Luke Weaver let both of McLean’s runners score, putting the Diamondbacks on top, and allowed two more runs in the inning. He was replaced by Luis García in the eighth, who gave up three runs of his own in just one-third of an inning.

The Mets’ offense didn’t do McLean any favors either, scoring just one run on a Luis Robert Jr. homer in the first inning. They had just five hits and two walks against Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodríguez and two relievers.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

McLean was filthy despite being the hard-luck loser. He now has a 2.70 ERA and 0.84 WHIP after three starts.

“He was really good today,” said Mendoza of McLean after the game. “He had everything working, especially the sinker.”

UP NEXT

The Mets and Diamondbacks play the rubber game this evening in Queens! The Mets had a comeback win on Tuesday to stretch their winning streak to four games, but just couldn’t put anything together yesterday in a 7-2 loss. David Peterson allowed five runs in the first two innings, and the Mets batters struggled early to get a runner to second base. Eventually, the Mets would score a couple of runs, but at that point, the game felt too far out of reach.

There’s nothing like a Nolan McLean day to get back on track! Tonight is a rematch of the WBC Finale with McLean facing off against Eduardo Rodríguez. Should be a fun one tonight!

Game Notes

A.J. Minter made his first rehab appearance for St. Lucie today, pitching a scoreless inning with one strikeout. The lefty threw just nine pitches, six of which were strikes. His fastball topped out at 94 mph. Minter is expected to return to the Mets in early May. He has been sidelined since last April after getting surgery for a lat injury.

Christian Scott was dominant in his second start for Triple-A Syracuse, allowing just two hits and striking out seven over five scoreless innings.

Three Things To Watch For

Rodríguez has made adjustments. From 2015 to 2025, Rodríguez primarily tossed fastballs. From 2023 to 2025, over 40% of his pitches were fastballs. Last season, he threw them 46.6% of the time, the highest amount since 2017. He’s been different this year. Over two starts this season, he is primarily using his change-up (34.9% usage), and it has a .177 xBA. Let’s see if that trend continues this afternoon and if the Mets attack him differently than they did last season.

Bo Bichette, at bat leader? Heading into games today, Bo Bichette (2-for-4 yesterday) is currently leading the league in at-bats (54). This is more of a reflection of how infrequently he walks (only twice so far this season, which isn’t that far off his normal pace). If you cut out the first three games of the season, Bichette is hitting .275/.310/.325 going 11-for-40 with two doubles. We are starting to see normal Bichette, and as he starts to hit for more power, we’ll see his OPS+ go from 47 to where it normally is (120’s).

Getting a break from Corbin Carroll. Carroll had a great day at the plate yesterday, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored. He was the engine of the Diamondbacks’ offense, either driving players home or getting in a position to score himself. He is out of the lineup today, though he will be the first bat off the bench if the opportunity presents itself.

Let’s go Mets!

“We started the clock,” Carlos Mendoza said. “It will be one of those where, if we have to use him every single day, we will. But the fact that he’s in real competition is a good sign.”

Minter was effective in 13 games for the Mets in 2025, posting a 1.64 ERA with 14 strikeouts against five walks over 11 innings. However, he was placed on the injured list in late April and had to undergo surgery to repair a torn lat. He is expected to return in early May.

Another southpaw, Nate Lavender, also made his first rehab appearance, striking out two in a scoreless inning. Lavender underwent Tommy John surgery in 2024 and spent the 2025 season with the Rays’ organization after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft. He was returned to the Mets in November. Not regarded as a hard thrower, Lavender touched 95 mph with his fastball on Thursday.

Kimbrel opted to remain with the Mets’ organization despite not making the major league roster out of spring training. The nine-time All-Star topped out at 94.2 mph with his fastball in his outing.

It is too early to panic with David Peterson three starts into the season, even if in his two previous starts, he gave up five runs. His start to the season has been uneven, with most of the damage coming in two innings. There are some positives – for example, his 31.1% chase rate so far is well above average. But overall, Peterson looks like he has taken a step back across the board. His velocity is down across the board; he is not generating as much horizontal movement on his pitches, his pitches are generating fewer whiffs, and he is struggling to find the zone.

While it is too early to smash the panic button, it is worth it to dive into the alternatives if a future rotation shake-up is needed.

Sean Manaea

Sean Manaea has had his own issues since the start of spring training, when he was unable to hit even 90 miles per hour on his fastball. The good news is that eight of his twenty-five four-seam fastballs and sinkers have been over 90 miles per hour so far this season, and he has reached 91.3. The bad news is that he has not been consistent in his velocity, throwing as slow as 85.3 miles per hour. This very much showed up as he tired towards the end of his most recent appearance on April 8. On his first 35 pitches, Manaea averaged 90 miles per hour on his sinker. On his last 35 pitches, he averaged 87.6 miles per hour.

It is hard to pinpoint what the level of concern should be here. The velocity is slowly starting to come back. The sweeper still looks very good. His chase rate is climbing, and he is now throwing five usable pitches. But if he is going to rejoin the rotation, he needs to maintain everything past 35 pitches. There has been progress, and as it stands, he probably profiles as a backend starter. There may even be arguments that he still currently profiles better than Peterson. His pitches still profile better per most stuff models; he is doing much better limiting hard contact, and he is locating his pitches better. He is also still tunneling his pitches well.

Manaea still is not where you want him to be, but it is not very clear what the solution is to keep moving forward is. According to the team, the bone chips are not pressing on his ligaments, so removing them would lead to a lot of risk for likely not much reward. In his last appearance, he raised his arm angle up two ticks and started to see some velocity increase without much horizontal break loss. This all may just click at some point. It is also possible that he does not improve much past here, and the Mets will need to figure out what they want to do.

Tobias Myers

Tobias Myers may already be the Mets’ third or fourth best starter despite not being in the rotation at all. His stuff has taken a huge step forward from 2025, and while he will not likely stay a 1.13 ERA and 0.38 WHIP pitcher, he currently profiles like a mid-rotation starter. He has become a pro at tunneling his pitches, and his pitch movement continues to befuddle hitters. Myers has yet to give up a barrel, has only walked one batter, and his 24% strikeout rate is a big jump from his 17.3% in 2025. So far, he is building on all of his gains from spring training.

Part of Myers’ success comes from his new slider, which has more depth to it than his old slider. Myers described it as mimicking a curveball despite being thrown with a slider grip. While it has not generated significant swing and miss so far, he has yet to give up a hit with it. His cutter took a step forward this year with more glove-side movement, and so far it is generating a 50% chase rate and 33.3% whiff rate. He is using the pitch far less than in 2025, utilizing it more when he is ahead in the count. Meanwhile, his splitter has become his go-to pitch to get strikeouts when he gets to two strikes.

Myers looks like one of the Mets’ best pitchers, and that is a testament to how he has grown as a pitcher. If he continues this, he may force his way into the rotation at some point in 2026.

Christian Scott

Christian Scott is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but under the hood, he might look even better than he did before he got injured. You can largely hand-wave the 16.20 ERA and 2.70 WHIP from his first start as a mixture of his first start back from injury and pitching in Syracuse in April. Scott’s velocity is up 1.5 miles per hour on his fastball (95.7), his sweeper has significantly more horizontal movement, his splitter is tighter, he is throwing his slider harder with more break, and his movement profiles overall look strong from his lower arm slot.

The biggest question will be how Scott attacks left-handed hitters. That was an issue for him in 2024. His sweeper/splitter combo could be the key here. Scott has referred to his splitter as a changeup and in the offseason, discussed how he felt that pitch could help him better sequence against and attack left-handed hitters. This will be the key for him to develop into the star he was projected to be before his injury.

Jonah Tong

A week ago, this Jonah Tong breakdown would have been quite different, but in his last start, he showed that he may be making a breakthrough. His cutter showed actual, real glove-side movement! He generated -5.3 inches of horizontal break to go alongside his 7.5 inches of induced vertical break. It is by no means a plus pitch, but it went from a useless pitch to a roughly average pitch. Progress is progress.

Tong likely needs significant time in Syracuse to continue to refine his pitch mix and control. Being effectively wild does not work as well in the majors as it does in Triple-A. But having more usable pitches will allow him to sequence better and should help his pitches play up. In his most recent start, when he was mostly just throwing fastballs and changeups through the first inning, he gave up two runs and failed to generate a whiff on his fastball. As he mixed in more pitches throughout the outing and sequenced better, his whiff rate skyrocketed, and he ended with a 26.1% whiff rate on his fastball.

Tong has finally started to show real progress, but he is still very much developing. Barring some massive strides in the short term, he is more likely a second-half consideration.

Jack Wenninger

Jack Wenninger is another “effectively wild” pitcher dicing up Triple-A pitching with his 28.2% whiff rate. But with a 43.5% zone rate, non-amazing spin rates, and non-elite velocity, he likely profiles more as a fourth or fifth starter than a frontline pitcher. Where he does excel is in his movement profile. But any improvements in his control could greatly raise his stock. As it stands, he could make his way to the majors in 2026, but the Mets will likely want to improve his command and control before then.

Wenninger throws multiple above-average pitches, and even though he does not always know where they are going, they do generate swing and miss. Without elite metrics, control, or chase, he will need to either improve some of those areas or rely on the diversification of his large repertoire if he wants to be a successful major league starter.

Jonathan Pintaro

What is there to say about Mets Michael King, I mean Jonathan Pintaro, that has not been said before? Jokes aside, with a pitch mix similar to King, Pintaro excels at generating swing and miss. He throws multiple plus pitches with a great feel for spin and plus movement from a low arm slot. He does not have near the level of control as King, walks way too many batters, and does not tunnel as well.

Barring a jump in command, Pintaro likely would not be an option in the rotation outside of spot starts, but that was once the view of Michael King as well, so never say never.

Carl Edwards Jr.

Carl Edwards Jr. may be the most surprising name here, as most people likely think of him as a reliever. Across 11 years, he has a 3.86 ERA and 1.21 WHIP as a reliever and has never made a start in the majors. But in the minors in 2025, he began experimenting with being a starter, and the Mets signed him as starter depth this past offseason. It has started off fine so far, with a 3.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in his two starts and first nine innings.

Under the hood, he looks fine as well. He is running a roughly average whiff rate at 26.2%, chase rate at 25%, and strikeout rate at 21.6%, he is generating an above-average ground ball rate at 52.6%, and he is attacking the zone. His pitches do not profile as plus, but they generate above-average spin with good but not great movement.

He profiles like a fine spot starter, but probably not someone who will take an extended role in the rotation.
