The New York Mets and Miami Marlins closed out their four-game series with a Monday matinee in New York. The Marlins gave the ball to left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers (3-5, 5.77 ERA) against left-handed pitcher David Peterson (3-1, 3.20 ERA) for the Mets.

Peterson battled on Monday and the Mets’ offense supported their pitcher, coming away with the 6-0 victory over the Marlins.

The Marlins put two runners on in the top of the first as lead-off hitter Jon Berti reached on an error before being picked off at first. Jorge Soler hit a two-out single to reach, but Peterson struck out Garrett Cooper to end the inning.

The Mets were quickly in business, striking first in the bottom of the first, putting three consecutive innings on to open the inning. Brandon Nimmo led off with a double to center field. Starling Marte followed by reaching on a fielding error, and Francisco Lindor loaded the bases with an infield single to first. Two batters later, Mark Canha walked, which allowed Nimmo to score to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead in the first over the Marlins.

The Marlins once again put two more runners on in the top of the second, with Miguel Rojas and Jacob Stallings hitting back-to-back singles to lead-off the second. Peterson then struck out the next three batters he faced to retire the side and bring his strikeout count to four on the day.

The Marlins kept the Mets at bay in the bottom half of the inning, retiring the Mets in order.

Miami then kept their consistency, putting two runners on again in the third and by the first two batters reaching in back-to-back innings. Berti reached for the second time on a lead-off single and Jazz Chisholm Jr. was hit by a pitch to put two on for the Marlins with no outs. Peterson was once again able to get out of the inning though as he struck out soler for his fifth strikeout of the day and retired the next two batters he faced to get out of the inning.

The Mets once again went down in order as Rogers had retired six in a row.

Peterson continued to cruise and had his best inning so far in the fourth, retiring the Marlins in order and collecting two more strikeouts to bring his strikeout count to seven through four innings.

The Mets extended their lead over the Marlins in the fourth. The momentum was started with a one-out walk of J.D. Davis, followed by a double by McNeil that advanced Davis to third and put runners on second and third for the Mets with one out. The next batter up was Eduardo Escobar. He came through with a sacrifice fly that scored Davis to extend the Mets’ lead over the Marlins to 2-0. McNeil came in to score on a wild pitch by Rogers to extend the Mets’ lead some more to 3-0 over the Marlins. Nido grounded out to end the inning.

Unfortunately for the Mets, McNeil left the game after the fourth with an apparent injury. The displeasure was seen on his face as he crossed home on the wild pitch. He was replaced by Luis Guillorme in the fifth. The Mets announced that McNeil is dealing with right hamstring tightness.

The Marlins put two more runners on in the fifth. Luke Williams led off with a single center field and two batters later Chisholm Jr. walked to put two runners on. Peterson forced Soler into a double play to end the inning.

The Mets continued to hit well in the fifth. Nimmo and Marte led off with back-to-back singles. Two batters later Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Nimmo to score as the Mets extended their lead over the Marlins to 4-0.

After back-to-back runners reached in the sixth for the Marlins with one out (a single by Rojas and a walk of Stallings), the Mets went to their bullpen. Adam Ottavino came in to replace Peterson with one out and two on in the sixth. He forced Encarnacion into a double play to retire the side.

David Peterson’s final line:

5.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 SO, 3.18 ERA

The Marlins also went to their bullpen in the sixth. Dylan Floro came in to replace Rogers in the sixth for the Marlins.

Trevor Rogers’ final line:

5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR, 5.38 ERA

Guillorme reached on a single, but the Mets failed to capitalize as Floro retired the other three batters he faced to retire the side.

Ottavino returned to the mound for the Mets in the seventh. He retired the Marlins in order.

The Marlins returned to their bullpen in the seventh. Anthony Bass came in to replace Floro on the mound for Miami.

The Mets tried to get some offensive momentum started again in the seventh, but were unable to bring any runners home. Nimmo led off the inning with a single to left field to reach for the third time on Monday. Two batters later, after Marte grounded into a double play, Lindor reached on a fielder’s choice to put two runners on for New York. Alonso then grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Mets went back to their bullpen in the eighth inning. Drew Smith came in to replace Ottavino on the mound for the Mets in the seventh.

Adam Ottavino’s final line:

1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.73 ERA

Smith threw well in the eighth. He retired three of the four batters he faced, allowing just a single to Garrett Cooper, retiring Rojas on a groundout to end the inning.

The Marlins also went to their bullpen in the eighth. Tommy Nance came in to replace Bass on the mound.

The Mets blew the game open in the eighth. The offense was kick-started with Davis being hit by a pitch with one out (representing the 50th Met to be hit by a pitch). Guillorme then singled to center field to put to runners on. A wild pitch by Nance advanced Davis to third and Guillorme to second with one out. Escobar then came up clutch with a two-RBI single to center field that extended the Mets’ lead over the Marlins to 6-0.

With one runner still on, Nance walked Nido and the Mets had two on with one out. Two batters later Marte walked to load the bases. The Mets left the bases loaded as Lindor struck out to end the inning.

The Mets went back to their bullpen in the ninth. Yoan Lopez came in to replace Smith on the mound in the ninth.

Smith’s final line:

1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 0 HR, 2.03 ERA

Despite giving up two walks in the inning, Lopez closed it out to solidify the win for the Mets. It was a 6-0 victory over the Marlins.

Peterson (4-1, 3.18 ERA) took the win for the Mets (45-24); Rogers (3-6, 5.38 ERA) got the loss for the Marlins (29-36).

Metsmerized Player of the Game:

Monday’s Metsmerized player of the game is David Peterson. Though he had to battle on Monday and had a few innings where he was pitching from behind and having to get out of trouble, he struck out seven and had a quality comeback outing. He gave up six hits, but no runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

On Deck:

The Mets open a two-game series against the Houston Astros in Houston on Tuesday at 8:10 pm EDT.
