In game one of the New York Mets’ latest trip out west, their offense went back to sleep again as they were held to just two hits (both solo home runs) by Seattle Mariners pitching in a 3-2 loss at T-Mobile Park. A walk-off base hit by Cole Young off A.J. Minter in the bottom of the tenth inning to sink the Mets. That came after the Mets wasted their ghost runner chance. The positive was that Sean Manaea put up a solid outing out of the bullpen. The Mets fall to 26-34 on the season.

Mets Offense Held to Two Hits

It seems to be a theme for the Mets’ offense, or it’s just who they are at this point. After an encouraging series offensively over the weekend against the Miami Marlins, the hope was that they could carry that over on this six-game road trip out west. However, against the Mariners’ pitching, one of the best in baseball, it was going to be tough, and it proved to be a tall task on Monday night. Solo home runs by Jared Young and Marcus Siemian were all they could muster up against Mariners starter Emerson Hancock. Hancock was effective early with four perfect innings before allowing the home run to Young in the top of the fifth. The Mets struck out seven times against Hancock.

Against the Mariners’ bullpen, the offense was no-hit for the remainder of the game. In the top of the ninth against Andres Munoz, MJ Melendez reached base on a hit-by-pitch that was nullified by Brett Baty grounding into a double play. Tied at 2-2 heading into the tenth with Bo Bichette as the ghost runner, Juan Soto and Mark Vientos each struck out swinging, and A.J. Ewing popped out against Gabe Speier.

Brooks Raley Allows Key Home Run

Brooks Raley took the ball in the seventh with the Mets up 2-1. Hoping to hand the ball off to Luke Weaver for the eighth. However, the lefty allowed a game-tying home run to Josh Naylor. It was the second home run Raley has allowed this season. Prior to the home run by Naylor, Raley had gone four consecutive appearances without allowing a run.

In what was an odd game, the first hit of the day that wasn’t a home run from either team came in the seventh inning when Raley allowed a single to Cole Young after Naylor’s game-tying homer.

Manaea Gives the Mets Length

With David Peterson back in the bullpen for the time being after he struggled again as a starter, the Mets are giving Manaea more of a chance to prove he can still be an effective starter. New York threw a bullpen game today, opening with Austin Warren. Manaea would come in as the long man. Manaea came in after Warren hit Randy Arozarena to start the second inning. From there, Manaea pitched well in five innings of work with his only blemish being a home run he allowed to Colt Emerson in the bottom of the third inning.

Aside from that, Manaea went five innings and struck out four to keep the Mets in the game, and he handed the ball off to Raley with the Mets up 2-1. It was the third consecutive good outing for Manaea out of the bullpen. Mendoza said after the game that it was the best he’s seen Manaea pitch this season.

Player of the Game: Sean Manaea

Manaea pitched very well and struck out five Mariners batters in what the Mets hope is an encouraging sign for their left-hander.

On Deck:

The Mets’ offense will face another top pitcher from the Mariners, Logan Gilbert, on Tuesday night. New York has yet to announce a starter for the game. First pitch is at 9:40 pm EST, and the game is televised locally on SNY and broadcast on WHSQ 880 AM.

For Scott, it was the first win of his major league career, and the Mets’ offense gave him some backup with six runs. The bullpen had another strong day and got the remaining 12 outs to secure the win for Scott. The Mets are now 25-33 on the season.

Scott Notches First Career Win

Right now, the Mets’ starting rotation is in flux. Clay Holmes is injured, Freddy Peralta and Nolan McLean are struggling, and David Peterson‘s struggles have resulted in him going back to the bullpen. With that, the Mets need Scott and Jonah Tong to step up. Coming off one of his better outings of the season last weekend against the Marlins, Scott was impressive again. He pitched five good innings with eight strikeouts and allowed five hits and one earned run. Scott utilized his sweeper really well, throwing it 37.5% of the time. He also threw his fastball 40.6% of the time. Scott has 13 strikeouts in his last two outings.

Senger Hits First Career Home Run

Scott wasn’t the only one on the Mets who got a first for their career in the game. Catcher Hayden Senger, who had only one hit since coming back to the major leagues after the injury to Francisco Alvarez, took a slider away for his first home run of the season over the left field wall. Senger, who turned 29 years old in April, hit six home runs in the minor leagues this season. The team was waiting for Senger to demonstrate the power they knew he had. It was also just a feel-good moment as manager Carlos Mendoza, a longtime minor leaguer who never got a chance at the high level as a player, had a big smile on his face when Senger got back into the dugout after the home run.

Benge, Ewing Impress Mazzilli

Before they were inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame, Mazzilli and Valentine spoke to the media, and one of the highlights was Mazzilli speaking about the two rookie Mets outfielders. “I love watching Ewing and Benge play”, Mazzilli said, “They have all the tools, they’re exciting. I think there are some good things ahead for those young kids. They’re impressive.” Right on cue, Benge and Ewing showed exactly why Mazzilli is a fan. Ewing made a great running catch in the fifth inning to preserve a win chance for Scott. Benge not only made a nice catch of his own on defense but also had a three-hit day at the plate and scored a run.

Mets Game Notes

Marcus Semien notched two hits, including an RBI single. Juan Soto continued his hot streak with an RBI single. Jared Young slammed his first home run of the season. Mark Vientos ripped a double off the wall in left field that gave the Mets a 2-0 lead early in the game. Cionel Perez, Huascar Brazoban, Austin Warren, and Devin Williams all pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Player of the Game: Christian Scott

With eight strikeouts in five innings, Scott earned the first win of his major league career. His comeback from Tommy John surgery continues.

Peterson walked two and gave up a single to load the bases before giving up a two-out double to Eugenio Suarez to give the Reds a 2-0 lead in the first. He then gave up three more runs in the fourth. The Reds hit three straight singles off of Peterson before Elly De La Cruz hit an RBI double.

The Reds continued to pour it on in the sixth as Peterson gave up back-to-back hits, including an RBI double to Tyler Stephenson that made it a 6-0 Reds lead before Sean Manaea came in to relieve Peterson and get the Mets out of the inning.

Peterson’s day officially ended with six earned runs on 11 hits, three walks, and four strikeouts through five innings.

Prior to the sixth inning, the Mets had just one hit, a double by Luis Torrens in the third. But they finally showed a tinge of life in the sixth. Bo Bichette hit a one-out single paved the way for Soto who came up behind him and hit a two-run home run that finally put the Mets on the board to make it a 6-2 game. Soto has now homered five times in the last seven days and has at least one hit in 10 of his last 13 games as he continues to heat up. He has 11 home runs on the season.

The Reds struck back in the eighth as three straight hits, including an RBI single to Sal Stewart made it a 7-2 game.

The Reds never looked back on the lead they took early as they out-hit the Mets 15-5 and went on to defeat New York 7-2 to claim game two and the series.

Player of the Game

Tuesday night’s player of the game was Soto, whose lone hit of the night represented the Mets’ only runs of the day.

It was another crushing loss for the New York Mets.

On a day where the pitching was great for eight of nine innings, New York’s bats fell silent once again in the 305. And as it has many times, the Mets’ inability to string together at-bats sealed their fate in this one.

Loading the bases in the ninth inning, Devin Williams hung a change-up, which was crushed 416 feet by Heriberto Hernández for the walk-off grand slam. In one swing, the Mets’ pitching staff went from allowing zero runs on the day to four, and saw their team get swept as a result.

Final: Marlins 4, Mets 0
…yeah, that’s a fitting way for this one to end. Heriberto Hernández crushes a hanging changeup for a walk off grand slam. The Mets’ pitching held out for 8 innings, but the lineup’s struggles were too much to overcome. New York goes 0-3 on the weekend. pic.twitter.com/mL0enOSvbl

— Brandyn Pokrass (@BPok24) May 24, 2026

For a large chunk of this game, as stated earlier, the Mets’ pitching was lights-out.

On the hill to start for New York on Sunday was Christian Scott, and despite the lineup faltering the right-handed pitcher took another step toward becoming his best self for the Mets.

Over 5 2/3 innings pitched, Scott only allowed four hits and two walks. He struck out five batters and did not allow a run, dropping his ERA on the season to 3.20.

On multiple occasions, Scott escaped multiple situations where multiple runners were on base with less than two outs. And on each occasion, Scott kept his composure and went right after the Marlins’ batters.

The version of Scott that showed himself on Sunday may not have been perfect, but he was solid and gave the Mets a chance to win the baseball game. If the starting pitcher can continue to progress and build off this start, he will be a great asset to the Mets this season and going forward.

In the bullpen, Huascar Brazobán, Brooks Raley, and Luke Weaver worked around danger and kept the game tied up. On a different day, that would have been enough.

Scott, facing Owen Caissie, struck him out with the sweeper. He then got Kyle Stowers to ground out to end the inning. Really good job by the RHP to escape allowing any runs in the inning. After 3, the score remains 0-0. https://t.co/V2IYA0VgtE

— Brandyn Pokrass (@BPok24) May 24, 2026

However, Sunday’s game was a struggle for the same reason the other two games were. New York’s lineup simply could not get anything rolling on a consistent basis.

Totaling five hits as a team, every inning for the Metropolitans felt like déjà vu. New York would notch a baserunner, and instead of driving in said baserunner, they would squander the opportunity. Whether it was a flyout on a ball with an expected batting average over .400, a back-breaking double play, or a caught stealing, it felt like New York could simply never get that “big” hit. And with the Mets’ pitching shutting down Miami for most of the game, the lack of success was that much more crushing.

Outside of a few weeks in May where the lineup looked to have turned things around, this struggle has been the Mets’ reality in 2026. Some hitters did some positive things in the game, and the series, but the overall unit was not good enough. Until that fact changes, the Mets’ record will not improve.

They cannot, as A.J. Ewing strikes out on a 98.8 MPH fastball from Michael Petersen. Score remains 0-0 heading to the bottom of the 7th. (Also, Bichette's ball had an xBA of .470, while Torrens's ball was .460 for xBA. Not NY's day, or series, once again.) https://t.co/MogS1AoE37

— Brandyn Pokrass (@BPok24) May 24, 2026

Even in the worst of stretches, there are always some positives, no matter how small. And for the Metts, those positives keep coming from A.J. Ewing and Carson Benge.

While Benge did not have his best day at the plate, his walk and stolen base gave the Mets their best chance at scoring in the game against Miami. He continues to battle at the plate, and even when it is not his best day, Benge puts the Mets in a position to make winning plays on the offensive side of the ball.

When it comes to Ewing, the rookie had positive moments on both sides of the game. The center fielder recorded two hits and stole a base, giving New York baserunners multiple times in a game where they were scarce. And in the field, Ewing made an incredible throw to nail Javier Sanoja at the plate, keeping the game tied at 0 in the seventh.

A.J. Ewing does great things on a baseball field every game. What a throw from the CF to nail the runner at the plate, keeping this game a 0-0 tie. #Mets pic.twitter.com/Szi2Lv6lEk

— Brandyn Pokrass (@BPok24) May 24, 2026

These moements are great for the future of the Mets, as Benge and Ewing should share the outfield alongside Juan Soto for the forseeable future. But in the present, they have not been enough to overcome the other struggles the team has faced. Until the overall roster for New York shows improvement, especially on the hitting side, it is hard to see how things can consistently get better.

New York dropped the second game of the series to Miami by a score of 4-1, moving them to 22-30 on the season. It was a game that emphasized the slim margin that New York has to operate within, mainly due to their poor start to the season.

Miami jumped on New York’s frontline starter early, as Owen Caissie made it a 2-0 game in the bottom of the second with a double down the right field line. They extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning, as Liam Hicks took a hanging curveball 389 feet to right field for his 10th home run of the season. Hicks then did it once again in the 5th, making it a 4-0 game.

Despite striking out nine batters across seven innings pitched, Peralta’s stuff was picked up by Miami. The seven hits he allowed were not scattered, but in bunches early in the game. He had two walks and gave up two home runs, meaning that he extended innings for Miami and gave them instant offense. It was enough damage done early against the Mets ace to secure a series win for the Marlins.

However, the pitching cannot be expected to be perfect every game, and the team’s starters will sometimes have days where they give up four runs. As a result, a large portion of the blame on Saturday falls to the starting lineup.

The Mets had three total hits in this matchup against the Marlins. The second hit came on a Tyrone Taylor double in the ninth inning, which was followed by a Mark Vientos single to make it 4-1. Max Meyer dominated over seven innings pitched, striking out eight batters. He did issue three walks and hit a batter, but New York’s lineup did next to nothing with those opportunities.

Following Meyer, Anthony Bender carved up the Mets in his inning, striking out the side on 14 pitches. And while New York got a few more hits in the ninth inning, it was not nearly enough to get them back in the ballgame.

The meager offense has been the storyline of the entire series. The Mets have been held to just three runs over 18 innings against the Marlins. Meyer did enter Saturday’s start with a 2.85 ERA, but Eury Pérez entered Friday’s start with an ERA of 5.33. The past two days were more indicative of April’s struggles than the 7.33 runs averaged over the Mets previous nine games.

It’s hard to label a game as “must win” in May, but Sunday’s series finale sure feels that way for the Mets. Tey need a strong performance to get back on track. Otherwise, the wheels will start to fall off the proverbial bus again, and the Mets will fall back to nine games under .500.

On Deck

Christian Scott gets the ball in Sunday’s finale against the Marlins. The right-hander is coming off his four-inning outing where he allowed three earned runs against the Nationals. The Marlins have yet to announce a starter. First pitch is at 1:40 PM. The game will be televised on SNY and broadcasted on WHSQ 880 AM.

On the mound, it was the righty Nolan McLean (2-2, 3.57 ERA) for the Mets against lefty Foster Griffin (4-2, 4.02 ERA) for the Nationals.

Rafael Suanes-Imagn Images

It was a lopsided roller coaster of emotions for the Mets.

A night after a three-hit performance on Monday and telling The Athletic, “Just wanting to be the player the Mets signed is something that I think about a lot,” Bo Bichette remained locked in at the plate on Tuesday. He hit two-run home runs in both the first and second innings to finally contribute offensively like he’s wanted to. He went on to have a 2-for-4 night with four RBIs and two runs scored, driving in four of the Mets’ six runs on the day.

However, the Mets fell 9-6 to the Nationals.

After Carson Benge led off the inning in the first with a single, Bichette drove him in to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. He was followed by a single from Juan Soto, double by Mark Vientos and sac fly from Marcus Semien that extended the Mets’ lead to 3-0 over Washington.

Bichette’s hot streak continued in the second, the same way it did in the first. Benge hit a two-out single that was followed by a second two-run home run by Bichette that gave the Mets a 5-0 lead.

Brad Mills-Imagn Images

But that emotional roller coaster I mentioned? While Bichette is finally coming to life, his positive performance was overshadowed by what was McLean’s worst outing of his career. He gave up nine runs (six earned, three unearned runs on errors) on eight hits, including two home runs, walked two and struck out five.

McLean could not find his command, and the Nationals had his number on Tuesday. He gave up four runs in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth to give the Nationals a 9-6 lead through five.

The four runs McLean gave up in the second were courtesy of an inside-the-park grand slam on a fly ball to center field by James Wood. That was the first blow for McLean and the Mets.

The blows continued in the fourth as the Mets handed the Nationals more runs. They had a chance to get out of the inning with less damage done, but errors by Marcus Semien and Luis Torrens kept the inning alive, allowing the Nationals to take their large lead.

It looked like McLean might finally have been settling in in the fifth, retiring the Nationals in order and then striking out two in the sixth. But with two outs, he hit CJ Abrams and after 100 pitches, Carlos Mendoza had seen enough. He went to his bullpen, bringing in Daniel Duarte to make his Mets debut.

The Mets gained a run back in the top of the seventh. Soto hit his seventh home run of the year to make it a 9-6 game.

Duarte had a strong performance on the mound in his Mets debut. He pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one.

After Soto’s home run, the Mets were unable to produce again as the Nationals went on to take game two 9-6, handing the Mets their first loss in a game in which they led by five or more innings.

Players of the Game

Though the Mets came away with the loss, Bichette and Benge were the co-players of the game. Benge was 3-for-5 on the day with two runs scored, and Bichette was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored on two home runs.

On Deck

The Mets and Nationals continue their four-game series on Wednesday. Zack Thornton will make his MLB debut for the Mets. They will take on right-handed pitcher Zack Littell (2-4, 6.10 ERA).

Then followed by getting out of the jam on a force out by Anthony Volpe, keeping the Mets in the lead at 5-3. After the Mets scratched out a run in the bottom of the seventh, Weaver threw a scoreless eighth inning by getting Ben Rice to ground into a double play and Judge to fly out.

Soto Has a Big Day

Soto may not have had an RBI or a home run like on Friday night, but he was productive in other ways in Saturday’s win. He reached base four times in the win with two hits and two walks, and scored from first base on an RBI double by Mark Vientos. Soto also notched his second and third stolen bases of the season in the eighth inning.

Three RBIs For Vientos

Vientos has been an RBI machine for the Mets over the last 13 games with 12. On Saturday, he added three more to this stretch. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Vientos lined a double down the left field line to plate two. That put the Mets up 5-2. Then Vientos’s RBI groundout in the seventh inning extended the Mets’ lead to 6-3.

Benge Notches Three-Hits

While the topic of conversation about Benge will be his defense after he made his second defensive blunder in as many days, he continues to swing the bat well at the plate. He had three more hits, a double and two singles, and scored two runs. His third hit came on an infield single after his error and after getting a pep talk from manager Carlos Mendoza.

Player of the Game: Luke Weaver

Tough one to choose after the big days from Soto and Vientos. Weaver’s effort and performance give him the nod for the win. Getting out of the bases-loaded jam and giving the Mets two shutout innings to preserve a win.

On Deck

Freddy Peralta takes the mound for the Mets on Sunday against the Yankees’ right-hander Elmer Rodríguez. The game will be telecast locally on SNY and broadcast on WHSQ 880am at 1:40 pm EDT.

The story of the night was Ewing. What a night it was for the 21-year-old from Kettering, Ohio, who, with his dad in attendance, collected a multitude of firsts and filled out his stat sheet in his big league debut. Ewing was 1-for-2 on the night, with a loud RBI triple in the seventh for his first big league hit and RBI. He also walked three times on the night, had his first two runs scored of his career, his first two RBIs, and sped to second from first for his first big league stolen base.

Ewing’s triple was the first Met to triple in his first big league game. He was also the first Met since 2004 to reach four times in a big debut and the first Met to walk three or more times in a big league debut. The accolades and accomplishments were plenty for Ewing.

Freddy Peralta got the start for the Mets. After a rocky start to the night, he settled in and went on to pitch six innings, marking just the third time he’s been able to throw that many this season. He gave up just two earned runs on seven hits (one home run), a walk, and he struck out seven.

The only inning in which the Tigers struck for runs on Peralta was in the second. Dillon Dingler hit his seventh homer of the year to lead off the inning, and three batters later, with two in scoring position, Spencer Torkelson hit a sacrifice fly that allowed the Tigers’ second run to come across. Peralta threw a total 100 pitches (68 for strikes).

Offensively, Carson Benge, Juan Soto, Mark Vientos, and Brett Baty each collected a pair of hits in the Mets win as the Mets combined for nine runs on 13 hits.

After going down 2-0 in the top of the second, with bases loaded and one out, Francisco Alvarez grounded into a force out that drove in a run to get a run back for the Mets in the bottom of the inning.

The Mets tied the game 2-2 in the third on an RBI single by Vientos with two on and no outs.

Benge stayed hot on Tuesday as he collected two hits and, an RBI, and a run scored. His RBI was an RBI single in the fourth that gave the Mets a 4-3 lead over the Tigers.

The Mets extended that lead even further in the sixth, but suffered a loss in the inning, as Francisco Alvarez was pulled from the game early with an apparent knee injury.

John Jones-Imagn Images

With bases loaded (including with Ewing, who had walked for the second time and stole his first base), Bichette reached on a fielder’s choice, and a throwing error allowed Ewing and Torrens to make it a 5-2 game, followed by Soto grounding out to score Benge and make it 6-2.

The seventh inning was by far the most exciting of the night, as Ewing collected his first big league hit. After Baty reached for a second time on a single, Ewing hit a triple to right field that scored Baty for his first RBI of his career. Torrens then followed with an RBI single, and the Mets came out of the inning with an 8-2 lead over the Tigers.

The Mets offense poured it on even more in the eighth. After back-to-back one-out singles Soto and Vientos, Austin Slater reached on a fielding error to score a run. Then, with bases loaded and two outs, Ewing walked for a third time to pick up his second RBI of the night.

Player of the Game

Rightfully so, Tuesday night’s player of the Game is Ewing with his triple, three walks, two RBIs, and two runs. It was a night he’ll remember forever.

On Deck

The Mets and Tigers continue their series on Wednesday. It will be the lefty Framber Valdez (2-2, 4.57 ERA, 35 SO) on the mound for Detroit against Mets right-handed Christian Scott (0-0, 3.27 ERA, 15 SO). First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. EDT.

Mets Offense Still Searching for Answers

The Mets are missing key pieces in the lineup, such as Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr., and Jorge Polanco, but even still, the futility of the offense is jarring. On Saturday against Kelly, a pitcher with a 9.95 ERA coming in, New York did very little. They allowed Kelly to pitch his best game of the season, and he looked like his old 2022-2023 form. The only run of the game came with two outs in the top of the second inning. Brett Baty launched a double that scored Marcus Semien from first base to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead.

However, from there, the Mets only got one hit the rest of the game, a Tyrone Taylor double in the fifth inning. After that double, Kelly intentionally walked Soto, and Bo Bichette flew out to end what was the Mets’ last real chance at a rally, as Bichette’s uncharacteristic struggles with runners in scoring position continue. From there, the Mets never saw a runner reach base again.

Juan Soto’s Bat Has Cooled Down

Juan Soto, despite missing some time with a calf injury, got off to a hot start with a.338 batting average, a slugging percentage of .538%, and an OPS of 980 over his first 18 games. Over his last six games now, Soto has just two hits, and on Saturday, despite being intentionally walked, he was left hitless for the fourth time in these last six games. He just hasn’t looked comfortable at the plate lately.

A cool-down period for an even hitter like Soto is understandable considering how good his start was. Still, with the Mets floundering in last place and needing wins, plus the hitters they have out with injuries and no true timetable set for their returns, they need Soto’s bat to get hot again as quickly as possible.

Holmes Battles Through for Another Solid Outing

It wasn’t an easy outing on this day for Clay Holmes. He had to fight through some early jams, and in the third inning, the Diamondbacks broke through. Holmes had two outs and nobody on until back-to-back singles by Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo. Followed by a walk to Adrian Del Castillo. With the bases loaded, Ildemaro Vargas singled to drive in Carroll and Perdomo before Holmes got Nolan Arenado to fly out to prevent more damage.

Holmes made it into the sixth inning before he allowed a two-out single to Arenado. He was then taken out of the game for Austin Warren. Overall, Holmes struck out six and suffered a hard-luck loss due to the Mets’ offense not giving him much support.

On Deck:

The Diamondbacks will pitch Eduardo Rodriguez in the series finale on Sunday. While the Mets will throw a bullpen game with Huascar Brazoban getting the start. The game will be telecast locally on SNY and broadcast on WHSQ 880AM at 4:10 pm EST.

After the Mets went down in order to begin the game in the first, McLean took the mound, looking to bounce back from the worst start of his career. Despite a two-out double, the rookie would do just that, keeping the game scoreless through one.

Leading off the top of the second inning, Mark Vientos smoked a 104 MPH, 401-foot home run to left field, giving the Mets an early lead. In the bottom of the inning, Nolan Arenado would match Vientos with a leadoff home run, tying the game at one after the second inning.

After the second inning, a pitching duel began. At the end of the sixth inning, both teams combined had five hits, with the game still tied at 1-1. McLean’s outing ended after throwing his 100th pitch, allowing just one earned run and three hits in six innings pitched. The outing was a spectacular bounce-back for the right-hander, a start he will look to build on moving forward.

Luke Weaver replaced McLean in the bottom of the seventh inning. The veteran worked through trouble to produce a scoreless inning, with his fastball topping out at 97.6 MPH.

Brooks Raley replaced Weaver in the bottom of the eighth inning. The left-hander worked the sixth consecutive scoreless inning for the Mets staff. In the inning, Diamondbacks’ rookie Ryan Waldschmidt recorded his first career MLB hit in his first plate appearance. The score remained 1-1 after eight.

After the Mets once again failed to score in the top of the ninth, Devin Williams replaced Raley, looking to hold the score and push the game into extra innings. The Airbender would do just that, setting the Diamondbacks down in order.

Leading off the 10th inning, Vientos came through once again, doubling down the left field line, driving in the free runner Brett Baty. Carson Benge added on, smoking a ground-rule double into the left-center field gap that drove in Baty. That hit parade continued with a perfect bunt by Marcus Semien, making it first and third with nobody out. After MJ Melendez struck out and Francisco Alvarez grounded into a fielder’s choice, Luis Torrens grounded out to end the inning after taking a 3-1 lead.

Tobias Myers replaced Williams in the bottom of the 10th, coming off a poor outing in Colorado. He would bounce back wonderfully in his inning of work, retiring the side in order on 10 pitches, closing out a Mets win.

Player of the Game: Nolan McLean

McLean was in need of a strong start after failing to pitch beyond the fourth inning in his last outing, while allowing three earned runs. The National League Rookie of the Year candidate did just that, working six spectacular innings, the only blemish being a solo home run to the veteran Arenado. McLean’s season ERA dropped down to 2.78 and his WHIP to 0.90, good for the 14th and 5th best marks among qualified National League pitchers.

On Deck

The Mets will resume action on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. EST in the middle contest of the three-game set against the Angels. Clay Holmes will take the mound for his eighth start of the season, looking to continue his elite early-season pitching. The game will stream live on FOX, with radio on WCBS 880, and the Audacy app.
