On Monday, the Mets announced that closer Devin Williams was placed on the injured list due to a shoulder strain.

Williams’ first year with the Mets has not lived up to his three-year, $41.38 million dollar contract, posting a 4.66 ERA across 42 appearances. The Mets have not announced who will close games in his absence, but Kodai Senga got the first crack at it Monday at Truist Park.

Senga closed out an 8-5 win for his first MLB save in his first ever opportunity. He issued just a two-out walk in a scoreless ninth, striking out Matt Olson and Michael Harris II.

The Mets have now clinched the season series over the Braves. They will play the second of a three-game set in Atlanta at 7:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Nolan McLean will make the start, looking to continue his strong rookie season.

Christian Scott got the start for New York, tossing four innings and allowing four runs on seven hits, with one walk and six strikeouts. He didn’t factor into the decision.

New York got on the board immediately in the top of the first. A.J. Ewing led off with a ground-rule double and scored on a Bo Bichette single, and two batters later, with the bases loaded, Brett Baty crushed his first career grand slam to make it 5-0 before Atlanta had even come to the plate. The Braves answered in the bottom half, scoring two runs off Scott via a Drake Baldwin double, Matt Olson single, a HBP, then a Mauricio Dubón two-run single. 

But the Mets continued to score, tacking on two more insurance runs to make it 7-2 with a Jared Young RBI single scoring Lindor (who had doubled) in the second, and a Lindor solo homer—his 11th of the season—in the third.

Atlanta tried to compete, scoring two more runs off Scott in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles, and one off New York’s Jonathan Pintaro in the fifth on a wild pitch, but couldn’t recover against New York’s bullpen. New York added an insurance run in the ninth on a Jared Young sacrifice fly that scored Lindor, making it 8-5.

Duarte (1-0, 1.04 ERA) got the win with a scoreless seventh.

Kodai Senga came in for his first save opportunity and got it, closing out the ninth. Expect to see him in more of these situations down the stretch

Nolan McLean (8-7, 3.51 ERA) will get the start for New York on Tuesday. In his last outing vs. the Guardians, the starter allowed five runs on eight hits over three and five innings pitched, walking three and striking out eight.

Martín Pérez (7-6, 3.14 ERA) will take the mound for the Braves. In his last time out against the Marlins, he tossed three shoutout innings, allowing just one walk and striking out three.

The Mets roll into Atlanta, winning five of their last six. It was an odd weekend for the Mets, who won the series by a combined score of 17-14. On Friday night, they scored six runs before the Pirates scored four. Saturday the Mets got crushed 9-0. Sunday, the Mets returned the favor, winning 11-1. Hopefully the pendulum for the Mets offense doesn’t swing back the other way!

Three Things To Watch For

1. Bo Bichette. Bichette went 5-for-5 on Sunday with two doubles and a walk. In his last 20 games, he has gone 27-for-84 with five doubles and a home run, slashing .321/.356/.417. Since the All-Star break, Bichette has been getting on base at a healthy clip, but he hasn’t flashed much power. His two doubles Sunday represent one-third of his extra-base hits since the All-Star Break.
2. Homers. Elder has allowed 17 home runs in his 15 starts. He’s allowed two home runs during his current hot streak. For a third consecutive season, he has a 1.4 HR/9. The New York Mets are currently ranked 12th in the league with 143 homers, and the offense has been on a bit of a hot streak recently with more players cranking them out of the park.
3. Jared Young. From June 12 to July 4, Jared Young played 19 games where he slashed .132/.193/.245. He sank his batting average from .288 to .223. In the 27 games since, Young has slashed .316/.407/.481. In his last seven games, Young has gone 8-for-24 with two doubles, two triples and two stolen bases (albeit one of those triples took a bit of luck).

Fresh off a 5-1 week, the Mets are now set to battle their divisional rival in a three-game set. New York is set to roll out their top pitchers in this series, and with a few more wins, they have a chance to have one of their more successful runs of the 2026 season (and spoil a few parties in the process).

There is plenty to dive into this week, so without further ado, let us get into another series preview for the New York Mets!

Monday: Christian Scott (3-3, 3.15 ERA) vs. Bryce Elder (8-6, 3.69 ERA)

• In his last outing, Scott ran into some trouble, allowing three runs and six hits in five innings against the Guardians. His command was not as refined as in past games, but despite that, he still struck out seven batters in his outing. Scott’s stuff plays at an extremely high level, even when he does not have his “A” game. The velocity is great, the movement on his sweeper is very good, and most importantly, Scott is using his pitches to consistently generate strikeouts. Against a tough Braves lineup, Scott will have yet another opportunity to keep his very good 2026 campaign rolling.
• Unlike the past two seasons, Bryce Elder has been solid this season for the Braves. Holding a 3.69 ERA on the year, Elder pitched to a 3.00 ERA in the month of July, striking out 18 batters in the process. Elder’s arsenal is not overwhelming, but his sinker, cutter, and changeup have found plenty of success in 2026. The Mets have found success in the past against Elder, but this is not a pitcher that should be taken lightly. 

Tuesday: Nolan McLean  (8-7, 3.51 ERA)  vs. Martín Pérez (4-7, 3.14 ERA)

• He took the win, but Nolan McLean‘s outing was not his “peak” performance by any stretch of the imagination. Facing the Guardians, McLean allowed three walks and five runs in five innings. However, he also struck out eight batters and gave New York a good chance to win. Outside of a few blow-up outings, McLean has been rock solid at the minimum this year. When he is at his best, the righty looks like an ace and one of the better pitchers in the sport. Still only a rookie, McLean is already giving the Mets a chance to win every time he pitches. Facing the Braves on Tuesday, McLean has another opportunity to keep building himself as a pitcher and to continue his very good 2026 campaign.
• In the second game of this series, the Mets draw Martín Pérez. The lefty has been lights out in August up ot this point, not allowing a run in 10 innings over two starts. Pérez is avoiding barrels at an extremely high rate (5.9%) and is keeping the ball on the ground at a 48.4% rate. New York had success against Pérez a few weeks ago, but they should not take the crafty lefty lightly.

Wednesday: Zac Thornton (3–2, 2.52 ERA) vs. Tyler Mahle (3–9, 4.83 ERA) 

• Following a below-average start against the Marlins, Zac Thornton got right back to work against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In five innings, Thornton did not allow a run on four hits, striking out three batters in the process. He did walk two batters, but from an overall standpoint, Thornton is attacking the zone and consistently putting his team in a great position to win. The lefty has run into some trouble with his hard-hit rate (39.8%) and is not a complete strikeout artist, but it has not mattered up to this point. Thornton is providing the Mets consistency and production in a starting role, and I expect that to continue in the finale of this series. 
• Tyler Mahle got rocked by the Mets early in 2026, and he has a chance for revenge on his new team to close out this series. Holding a 4.83 ERA over 100.2 innings pitched, Mahle bounced back after a rough first start in August. Facing the Yankees, the right-handed pitcher tossed six shutout innings of baseball, striking out nine batters in the process. Of all his pitches, Mahle finds the most success with his fastball and cutter. Like Pérez, the Mets should not take Mahle lightly in this game.

The Main Storyline

Ahead of this series, my main storyline is all about building upon success.

The Mets went 5-1 last week, spearheaded by the likes of Bo Bichette and Carson Benge. New York’s makeshift bullpen has proven up to the challenge of consistently getting outs, with the electric Jefry Yan playing a key role.

Having a great week is only temporary, though. The real “success”  is found by sustaining that momentum over an extended period. New York’s 2027 roster will be powered by plenty of the young talent contributing in 2026. Benge, A.J. Ewing, and many more will be the foundation of the team, rather than key contributing pieces.

Even if a “run” does not transpire, learning how to win, especially in the major leagues, is imperative for any young core. Learning how to battle through fatigue and attrition is what forms the heart of a champion and the bedrock of consistent playoff teams.

Over the rest of 2026, the Mets need to build those good habits. If they want to truly compete in 2027, the first step is making sure the roster grows as much as it can over the remainder of the current season. For that reason, the idea of building upon success is my main storyline of the week.

Player to Watch 

In the latest early-week series for the Mets, I am concentrating on Carson Benge.

Benge has been red-hot at the plate and has played phenomenal defense in multiple outfield spots. He is growing into the player David Stearns and company saw over the spring, and he is set to form a very fun outfield trio with A.J. Ewing and Juan Soto.

This week against the Braves, I am personally excited to see how Benge continues to grow as a player. He is cementing himself as a foundational piece for New York on both sides of the ball. And if he continues this level of play, he could put himself into the National League Rookie of the Year race.

Prediction

In their series against the Braves, I have the Mets winning two of three games.

The Mets announced Monday that they have placed Williams on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder strain. It is retroactive to Aug. 8.

In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled right-handed pitcher Jonathan Pintaro from Triple-A Syracuse.

Williams most recently pitched on Aug. 7. He struggled, allowing two runs on three hits in an inning of work. An outfield assist helped get him through the frame.

His fastball velocity was right around the 93.9 mph he’s been averaging this season, however.

The 31-year-old Williams in the midst of an up-and-down first season with the Mets. Though he was good in May and June, he had a rough April and a so-so July. He’s allowed three runs through two innings so far in August.

Overall, Williams has posted a 4.66 ERA in 42 games this year after a 4.79 in 67 appearances last season for the Yankees. Williams has posted 0.7 fWAR, 11.87 SO/9 and 4.89 BB/9, all of which would be career worsts for a full season. Williams has 16 saves in 19 opportunities.

Pintaro, 28, has thrown 14 1/3 innings for New York with a 4.40 ERA. He’s also pitched 40 1/3 innings with a 4.02 ERA for Syracuse.

The Mets’ bullpen has collectively posted a 3.74 ERA, the sixth-best mark in MLB.

Williams’ contract runs through 2028 with $51 million total guaranteed.

The 21-year-old infielder was promoted from High-A Brooklyn on July 27. Since then, it’s been two weeks, two Eastern League Player of the Week awards. The second honor was announced Monday by the Rumble Ponies.

From August 3-9, Voit went 11-for-18 with three doubles, four RBIs, nine runs scored, four walks and three stolen bases. When he went 5-for-6 on August 6, he tied a Binghamton franchise record for hits and runs scored in a game.

The Mets took Voit in the first round (38th overall) in the 2025 Draft out of the University of Michigan, and MLB Pipeline ranks him as the team’s No. 6 prospect with a 2028 ETA.

He led Double-A in batting average, on-base percentage and runs this week and was tied for first in hits. The batting average was second across all minor leagues, and the OBP was tied for second.

In 11 games at Double-A, he is 22-for-40 with a home run, seven doubles and a triple, producing an absurd slash line of .550/.633/.850. Some scouts say his best attribute is his throwing arm.

Voit hit .242/.349/.396 with 11 homers and 49 RBIs in 76 games for Brooklyn before he was promoted. He stole 36 bases in 44 attempts. He leads the Mets organization with 42 steals overall.

Offensive Player of the Week: Carson Benge

Carson Benge has been swinging a good bat lately. Last week, he slashed .409/.435/.773 with an OPS of 1.208. This included two home runs with six RBIs over the course of last week. Benge also made a nice web gem out in left field on Friday. Unfortunately, he got a little banged up, injuring his wrist on the play in the outfield after slamming into the wall. X-rays were negative, so hopefully this does not affect his performance at the plate.

Pitcher of the Week: Sean Manaea

Sean Manaea had two strong performances last week, recording two wins. In his first game, he went six strong innings, struck out seven, and allowed two earned runs. He did give up quite a few walks and hits in this game; however, he learned from this in his next start. He went seven innings, struck out 11, only allowed one earned run, and only surrendered three hits with no walks. Manaea’s 11 strikeouts were a season-high for any Mets pitcher in 2026. This flash of brilliance looked like 2024 Manaea!

Honorable Mention: Luis Torrens

Despite only playing in three games last week, Torrens made them count. The catcher slashed .500/.615/1.100 with an OPS of 1.715. He hit two home runs and drove in seven over the course of last week’s games. The most interesting stat for Torrens last week might not be from the batter’s box. A defensive-first catcher (he lands in the 94th percentile in fielding run value), it’s nice to see Torrens’ bat come around.

Up Next:

The Mets are splitting an away series and a home series next week. First up, they play the Braves in Atlanta. The Braves have been doing well all season, going 71-47, and more so as of late, going 8-2 in their last 10. The Mets then take on the Nationals at home. The Nationals come into the week at 59-61, right ahead of the Mets in the NL East standings.

Before taking the mound, he was given a 2-0 lead, thanks to RBIs from Carson Benge and Luis Robert Jr. in the top of the first. Manaea took that cushion and ran with it. He retired eight of the first nine hitters he faced, seven via the strikeout. The Pirates would get on the board with a solo home run from Jake Mangum in the bottom of the third, but that would be all. The Mets continued to add on, and Manaea remained sharp as ever. After the Mangum home run, Pittsburgh garnered one hit against the lefty.

Manaea put out his best performance of the year, allowing one run on three hits with a season-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings. Sunday was just an extension of what he has been able to accomplish of late. Over his last six starts, Manaea has now pitched to a 2.95 ERA across 36 2/3 innings. Length has been a major positive for him, throwing six innings or more in five of those outings. “To know how much work he put in to get to where he is right now, it’s even more fun,” interim manager Andy Green said postgame.

When things were going poorly for him, the velocity was always the first thing mentioned. But since rejoining the rotation in mid-June, he has thrown 13 pitches of at least 94 MPH. All of them have come in his last two starts. For a pitching staff that lost quite a few people at or before the trade deadline, Manaea rediscovering his stuff from 2024 could not have come at a better time.

A few months ago, it was hard to tell what Manaea’s future with the Mets looked like. Not anymore. Manaea has done more than enough to prove he will be a part of the Mets’ rotation in 2027. Having a veteran to go along with the young guys like Nolan McLean, Christian Scott and Zac Thornton will go a long way.

Bo Bichette went 5-for-5 with two doubles, Luis Robert Jr. and Francisco Alvarez homered and Sean Manaea struck out a season-high 11 in an 11-1 victory Sunday over the Pirates. James Villani has more in a recap that is more magical than miserable here.

The Mets (52-67) have won five of six. (For the hopelessly optimistic, New York is 11 games back of the final playoff spot with 43 games to go.)

“We have a lot of baseball in front of us,” Bichette said. “And I think it’s in everybody’s interest and desire to play hard, win games, find the best version of themselves, and finish strong.”

New York heads to Atlanta Monday, where Christian Scott (3-3, 3.15 ERA) will face RHP Bryce Elder (8-6, 3.69 ERA) at 7:15 p.m. ET on SNY.

First baseman Billy Amick homered for the third straight game for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday. Since coming over with Bruin Agbayani from the Twins organization in the A.J. Minter trade, Amick is 8-for-24 with five homers and 13 RBIs in seven games. He has 28 homers combined for Binghamton and Double-A Wichita this year.

Outfielder Aidan Smith (Freddy Peralta trade) homered for High-A Brooklyn, his fourth in six games since joining the Cyclones. The 22-year-old hit 10 homers in 49 games at High-A Bowling Green this season.

Xzavion Curry was optioned to Triple-A after Saturday’s game. RHP Jack Weisenburger was brought up and made his MLB debut in relief of Manaea. The 28-year-old pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two to the delight of his family, who were among the 22,753 on hand.

Jeff McNeil recorded his 1,000th career hit with an infield single off of Boston’s Garrett Whitlock in the Athletics’ 4-3 win. He had 920 hits with the Mets. In the same game. Jacob Wilson set an MLB record for shortstops with his 111th straight errorless game at at the position. He surpassed Mike Bordick, who set the mark with the Orioles in 2002.

Atlanta’s Chris Sale was ejected before Sunday’s game with the Yankees for arguing with an umpire about a balk from the day before.

Miami’s Kyle Stowers left the game Sunday with left hamstring pain after appearing to get hurt while getting out of the batter’s box on a two-run single. He will undergo further evaluation.

The Rays placed RHP Griffin Jax on the 15-day injured list with right elbow pain.

In doing so, he lowered his season ERA to 4.13. A far cry from the 6.85 mark he sported following an appearance on May 10.

Behind Manaea, Jack Weisenburger made his big league debut and posted two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. He struck out Jhostynxon Garcia for his first big league punch-out in the ninth. The 28-year-old was called up prior to the game and has played with Triple-A Syracuse and the Mexican League in 2026.

Offensively, Bo Bichette led the way. He was a perfect 5-for-5 and had the hit that blew the game open in the fourth inning. He cleared the bases with a bases-loaded double putting the Mets up 8-1 at the time.

Elsewhere, Luis Robert Jr. drove in a season-high four runs. He hit a two-run home run in the third, had a sacrifice fly in the first, and singled home Bichette in the seventh.

In all, four Mets had multi-hit games. The aforementioned Bichette and Robert Jr. were joined by Carson Benge (2-for-5, RBI) and Jared Young (3-for-5). Lastly, Francisco Alvarez added his 13th home run in the fifth.

With the victory, the Mets move to 52-67 on the season.

Player of the Game: Sean Manaea

Sean Manaea quietly continues to string together strong starts. On Sunday, he spun seven brilliant innings, allowing just a single run and set a season-high in strikeouts with 11. His season ERA is now 4.13. Outside a game on July 18, Manaea has not allowed more than three earned runs in a game since April.

On Deck

The Mets are right back at it Monday as they travel to Atlanta to face the Braves. The first game of the three-game set is slated for a 7:15 pm ET first pitch. The probable pitching matchup is Christian Scott versus Bryce Elder.
