One day after the Knicks’ epic comeback win in the NBA Finals, the Mets showed some resilience themselves, coming back twice to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 and avoid a sweep.

Juan Soto homered in the seventh inning with the game tied 4-4 to put the Mets ahead for good. New York bounced back from a first-inning 1-0 deficit, thanks to a two-run homer by Bo Bichette and a solo shot by Jared Young.

They fell behind again on a rough second inning by starter Christian Scott. The righty allowed a solo homer, a double and a two-run homer to the first three batters of the inning to give the Cards a 4-3 lead. Scott labored through 4 2/3 innings with seven hits, one walk and six strikeouts.

Young delivered again in the fifth, tying up the game on a single to score Soto. The Mets’ bullpen was spectacular, holding the Cards hitless and scoreless in 4 1/3 innings of work. Brooks Raley got the win and Devin Williams secured the save, with A.J. Minter and Luke Weaver also keeping the Cardinals at bay.

“When we’re going well, you see the conviction when we’re making swing decisions,” Carlos Mendoza said after the game. “The way the barrel’s coming through the hitting zone and right away, you saw it.”

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Young hit his fourth homer of the year and erased the Mets’ deficit with his RBI single. He continues to be an offensive force when called upon and is hitting .288 with four homers, nine RBIs and an .890 OPS.

UP NEXT

It doesn’t get any easier for the Mets as they host the first-place Atlanta Braves for three games starting Friday. Nolan McLean (3–4, 3.98 ERA), who has allowed just two runs combined in his last two starts over 11 innings, takes the mound. Atlanta, with a 15-game lead over New York, has yet to name a starter. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 PM ET on Apple TV.

Three Things To Watch For

1. Get On Base! The Mets are doing that thing again where the offense just disappears. On Tuesday night, the Mets had five hits and no runs. Last night, the Mets had only three hits and scored two runs, thanks to Francisco Alvarez. In addition to the Mets getting only three hits, they worked only two walks. The offense over the last couple of days has been so bad that Bo Bichette and Luis Torrens slipped back to a sub-.600 OPS.
2. Bullpen is still rested! On Tuesday night, Joey Gerber and Cionel Pérez pitched for three innings of relief. Last night, Pérez and Jonathan Pintaro combined for 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball after David Peterson struggled in bulk relief. The Mets’ big relievers (Raley, Weaver, Brazobán, Minter and Williams) haven’t pitched since last Sunday. Hopefully, the Mets put the bats in a position to use the big guns.
3. Juan Soto. The Mets need their superstar today. Soto lit the world on fire at the end of May, going 13-for-35 with seven home runs over 10 games. In June, Soto has gone 3-for-30, all singles with four walks (.100/.206/.100).

After Austin Warren opened the game, Peterson was tasked with handling the bulk of the innings. The assignment lasted just 3 2/3 innings, during which he surrendered six earned runs. By the time manager Carlos Mendoza emerged from the dugout to take the ball, the Cardinals had built an insurmountable lead. 

The Mets would go on to lose the game, 9-2, having been outscored by the Cardinals 16-2 in the first two games of this series. 

Peterson now owns a 5.75 ERA across 61.0 innings, a far cry from the pitcher who earned an All-Star nod a year ago and looked to have finally found his groove.

What’s made Peterson’s struggles particularly frustrating is that they haven’t arrived all at once. A rough start followed by a solid outing. A bullpen move and a promising appearance, followed by another blowup. The struggles are waves.

The Mets have shuffled him between roles throughout the season, trying to find a formula that works, but nothing has stuck. Instead, Wednesday served as a reminder that the problems run deeper than role definition.

The command has wavered, and traffic on the bases has piled up. Peterson left many of his pitches hanging throughout Wednesday’s outing, surrendering seven hits while walking two.  

Last season, the southpaw authored the best stretch of his career, posting a 3.06 ERA through the end of July and even throwing the first complete-game shutout of his career. 

However, he struggled in the latter part of the season, and the second-half collapse that began last August has bled into 2026. Peterson has yet to fully rediscover the version of himself that seemed to be emerging as a frontline starter. Nevertheless, Mendoza believes he can figure it out. 

“I look at him as a guy that we’re going to need to get big outs for us,” he said postgame. “I’m confident in Peterson even though it’s been hard for him. You continue to trust him and continue to work with him.”

The Mets don’t necessarily need Peterson to be an ace. They just need reliability. And no matter what Mendoza says, right now, it’s not clear where they’ll get it.

Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets have announced that Kodai Senga will make a rehab start for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies today, June 11.

After he was scratched earlier in the week Senga said, “Obviously, the performance hasn’t been great on the field. Been practicing a little bit more and with that comes a little bit more fatigue. I got some treatment and the treatment effects were a little bit greater than I anticipated. It became a little bit more loose, so that caused the nerve sensations. It’s not like it’s inflamed, I wouldn’t say this is an injury. Going back to what I said earlier, continuing to strive for those mechanics, striving for health and getting back to the field I don’t think is too far.”

Clearly, it was not too far away.

The New York Mets struggled heavily against the Cardinals with David Peterson giving up six runs in only 3 2/3 innings pitched on Wednesday. There was really nothing redeemable in his performance as he struggled to find the zone, struggled to generate whiffs and walked two batters with only one strikeout.

The one positive for the Mets was Francisco Alvarez hitting his first home run since returning from the injured list.

The Mets will try to avoid a sweep with Christian Scott on the mound Thursday at 1:10 p.m. ET facing up against Cardinals starting pitcher Hunter Dobbins.

In the most recent mock draft by Keith Law of The Athletic, Law mocks high school two-way shortstop Archer Horn to the Mets with the 27th overall pick in the major league draft. Archer is athletic with good bat speed. As a high school player, he would be a departure from the type of player Kris Gross and David Stearns tend to take with their first pick.

The Mets have purchased the contract of catcher Jack Scanlon from the New York Boulders of the Frontier. In 25 games, he hit .333/.423/.656/1.079 with eight home runs.

The Atlanta Braves have announced that Ronald Acuna Jr. has been placed on the 10-day injured list, Tyler Kinley has been placed on the 15-day injured list (backdated to June 8), and Carlos Carrasco has been designated for assignment. The Mets on June 11, 1986 beat the Phillies 5-3 to improve their record to 39-16. Ron Darling threw a six inning quality start, striking out six and walking two while Jesse Orosco locked down the save.

Ray Knight had the big hit of the game, a two run home run in the third inning. Kevin Mitchell went 2-for-3 with a double, while Mookie Wilson went 2-for-5 with a stolen base.

Overall the Mets had 12 hits and two walks while only striking out six times.

David Peterson coughed up a three-run homer and a two-run homer as St. Louis built a 7-0 lead en route to an 9-2 drubbing of New York (29-38) Wednesday at Citi Field. The Cardinals (37-28) have beat the Mets four out of five this season, outscoring them 23-7.

Austin Warren (1-3) was the opener and performed poorly as well. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks and needed 33 pitches to escape the first inning.

It was only the fourth time in 17 appearances that Warren allowed a run, though he has given up two runs in consecutive appearances. He surrendered a go-ahead two-run homer to Freddy Fermin in the seventh inning of a 3-2 loss last Saturday in San Diego.

Nelson Velázquez hit the two-run shot off Peterson in the third to put the Cardinals up 4-0 and Jordan Walker‘s 17th homer was the three-run blast that made it 7-0 in the fourth.

Francisco Alvarez got the Mets on the board with a two-run shot in the fourth off starter Andre Pallante, (7-4) who went six innings and fanned five.

New York had an excellent chance to score in the third. They had runners on first and second with nobody out, but Carson Benge and Bo Bichette both struck out. Juan Soto walked to load the bases before Jared Young grounded out.

The Mets started play Wednesday only five games back of the final wild-card spot, but needing to jump seven teams. The Diamondbacks, Padres and Nationals entered the day in a three-way tie for the final spot, all two games over .500. New York is 22-22 since losing 12 in a row.

Stat of the Game

In seven starts, Peterson’s ERA is 7.56. In six bulk relief appearances, his ERA entering Wednesday was 1.88. That number jumped to 3.64 with this ugly showing. He gave up six earned runs over 3 2/3 innings to raise his overall ERA to 5.75.

Player of the Game

Alvarez’s fifth homer came in his second game back after surgery to repair torn meniscus in his right knee. He started at designated hitter. He’s slashing .244/.316/.412 in 39 games.

On Deck

The Mets will try to avoid the sweep. Christian Scott (2-0, 2.50 ERA) started the year with six straight no decisions before earning his first two career wins in his last two starts. He has struck out 41 and walked 18 over 36 innings.

RHP Hunter Dobbins (1-0, 2.77 ERA) starts for St. Louis. Game time is 1:10 p.m. ET and it will air on SNY.

Tuesday night’s game was not the way to start a homestand. The Cardinals beat the Mets 7-0, getting Peralta to allow six runs over six innings while the Mets batters only recorded five hits. Gerber and Pérez were able to combine for three innings of relief, allowing one run, to keep all of the Mets arms fresh.

The Mets need a bounce back win tonight. They need that type of win where they fire on all cylinders.

Warren had his first rough outing last Saturday allowing a two-run home run during a two-inning relief stint. That ended up being the difference maker as the Mets lost 3-2. Three Things to Watch For

1. David Peterson? David Peterson hasn’t pitched in June yet. His last outing was on May 31st where he held the Marlins to one hit and no runs over four innings of relief. There’s every reason to believe that he’ll be the Mets bulk reliever this afternoon. Over 13 games this season Peterson has pitched 57 1/3 innings with a 5.18 ERA, 3.01 FIP, 1.587 WHIP with a 79 ERA+.
2. A.J. Ewing. Ewing was the only player with a really solid night at the plate last night going 2-for-4 with a double. Ewing now has a six game hitting streak where he has gone 9-for-22 with two doubles, three stolen bases and three runs scored (.409/.440/.500). Ewing also extended his strikeout streak to eight straight games with at least one strikeout. On a positive note, he has struck out exactly once in each of his last six games (he had five strikeouts in two games to start this dubious streak).
3. Mark Vientos. Vientos went 0-for-1 in his pinch hit last night. On the season Vientos is hitting .212/.246/.368 with a 72 OPS+ and a -0.9 bWAR. He is hitless in July going 0-for-11 over five games with six strikeouts. Since May 21st he is hitting .128/.146/.213. Vientos is now struggling to find playing time between the emergence of Jared Young, and Juan Soto / MJ Melendez doing more of the DH’ing. Here’s hoping Vientos gets a chance tonight and can sieze it.

But at 4-4 with a 3.63 ERA his numbers had been in line with his performances the two years prior. In 2024, he was 11-9 with a 3.68 ERA and in 2023 he went 12-10 with a 3.86 ERA.

Start No. 14, however, was his worst as a Met. He allowed six earned runs on six hits over six innings, struck out five, walked two and hit two batters in New York’s 7-0 loss to St. Louis in front of 35,175 at Citi Field. His ERA jumped to 4.04. He hasn’t finished a season with an ERA north of 4.00 since 2019.

“Not good right now,” he told reporters who asked how his season was going. “Talking about numbers. At the end of the day, it’s all that matters. I’ve been in this situation before. Good thing is that I’m healthy and I have 18, 19 more games in front of me. I just have to keep competing, that’s it. And at the end of the day … the way that I see it all the time I just come to compete. …  at the end of the day my numbers are going to be there, that’s it.”

Peralta threw two scoreless innings before walking Nolan Gorman (.606 OPS) on four pitches to lead off the third. Four of the next five batters reached safely (double, single, hit batter, strikeout, double) and St. Louis pushed across four runs, as many as Peralta has allowed in a game all season. Alec Burleson added a two-run homer in the fifth.

“I just thought he didn’t have the life on the fastball today, the velo was a tick down,” Carlos Mendoza said after the Mets dropped to 29-37. “Looked like he was just a little off today for some reason. Like the hop on the top of the zone wasn’t there. They were able to get the barrel there at times and they got him.”

Asked to assess Peralta’s season, Mendoza said: “He’s been good for the most part. When you look at his numbers, there have been outings where it’s a grind for five innings, but he gives us a chance to win a baseball game. There’s been a few of them where he’s been pretty good.

“And then there’s a couple of them like tonight. I think there was one in Miami, too – where, yes, he went six today, over there he went seven, but gave up a lot of runs. But for the most part, he continues to give us a chance to win baseball games.”

The Syracuse Mets offense was largely quiet today garnering only two runs on six hits with zero walks. Ryan Clifford continues to struggle while Kevin Parada has continued his hot stretch. The game was called after only five innings so the Syracuse Mets never got a chance to try to claw back.

Jonah Tong pitched on longer than usual rest and had a weird start. His velocity was down, but more concerning than that was that his induced vertical break on his fastball was not just down, it was legitimately bad. Tong has usually averaged 19-20 inches of break but today averaged 15.5 inches. It is possible some of those fastballs were cutters that got confused as fastballs, and he did top out at 19.7 inches of iVB, but this is something to watch. A misclassification would also explain why his fastball velocity was down while every other pitch was either the same or up. On the plus side, his new curveball/slider/slurve pitch continues to look better from the new arm slot.

The Brooklyn Cyclones offense was silent today failing to score a run on only four hits and one walk. John Bay continues to be their best hitter and he only has a .783 OPS. Mitch Voit has been banged up but better lately though he failed to get a hit today.

Despite being the losing pitcher on record Jose Chirinos had a strong start striking out ten across six innings. He ran an incredible 52.3% whiff rate and despite three walks overall attacked the zone. For the most part he has been a command over stuff pitcher but today he ran up the strikeouts. The bullpen was nearly flawless striking out six, walking no one and only giving up one hit.

The one offense that showed up today in true force was the St. Lucie offense, scoring seven runs across seven hits and three walks. Elian Peña has struggled for the past five weeks and even though he went hitless today was still productive. Antonio Jimenez has looked incredible since he was sent down to Single-A, while Jeremy Rodriguez has continued to struggle heavily. Trey Snyder, now back from an injury, has started off hot hitting a triple today. That 102.4 miles per hour hit was his hardest of the season so far. Snyder joined the organization in 2024 as a fifth round pick, and signed for almost triple his slot value.

Cam Tilly had a rough first two months of his season but this was his second scoreless outing in a row bringing his season ERA from 6.44 to 4.91. Cam Tilly threw 6.1 hitless innings across 80 pitches with a 26.5% whiff rate and 29.8% chase rate. He only averaged 91.5 miles per hour on his fastball and topped out at 93.4 miles per hour. On the season his fastest pitch has been 95.1 miles per hour, down from 97 in 2025. If he wants to take the next step forward and hit the value he was projected at before the season he will need to see that velocity start to tick up. His slider is probably his best pitch, coming in with over 2,800 rpm of spin and over 15 inches of horizontal break.

Elwis Mijares is another right-handed pitcher but he throws from a low slot and generates significantly more whiff, today sitting at 47.1%. His arm slot if deceptive and he runs plus spin rates across his pitches. His fastball and sinker sat at 94.8 miles per hour today but his high spin cutter/slider combo is where his value really sits.

The DSL Mets Orange offense performed well but it was not enough to make up for the pitching issues. Jhonael Cuello continues to perform well and hit his first home run of the season. Aiberson Blanco had a big game but the remainder of the offense outside of Sebastian Toro has struggled so far.

The DSL Met Orange pitchers all struggled. They all walked too many batters, gave up too many hits, and the other team teed runs off them.

The Mets had a rough night, as they got demolished by the Cardinals 7-0. Freddy Peralta struggled, allowing six runs on six hits over six innings. St. Louis did most of the damage in the third, scoring four runs in the frame. Offensively, they couldn’t get much going, finishing with just five hits on the night. Francisco Alvarez did single in his return from the injured list, while A.J. Ewing was a bright spot, going 2-for-3 with a double.

On Wednesday, the Mets will try to bounce back from their loss. The Mets announced that Austin Warren (1-2, 2.01 ERA) will start Wednesday, with Christian Scott (2-0, 2.50 ERA) on Thursday.

The Mets are set to face Cardinals righty Andre Pallante (6-4, 3.96 ERA). The game will kick off at 7:10 p.m. ET and air on SNY.
