The truth is nobody can make plans for next year counting on a 40 years old pitcher even if his name is Justin Verlander. His value is higher when he is in a win-now team. Unfortunately the Mets are not that team. He could be a difference maker for a team with greater chances this year and he can bring a good return if Cohen takes on some of the salary. I am not sure Eppler is a good negotiator though. I believe Robertson would have been able to bring more than two teenagers, so trusting him to get the maximum return for JV is very difficult. I am the always hopeful Mets fan and still believe 7 games out of the WC is not an impossible thing to overcome. But we can not defy logic and cashing out on old talent at the deadline is the logical thing to do as much as it hurt. In the other hand, the Robertson trade shows some desperation, because they had the best closer in the market, and unless they know something we don’t about other team making a closer with team control available they should’ve wait longer to maximize the return. If I were a team trying to trade for JV, I won’t offer much and will wait and see if Eppler bends as days goes by. Using the same logic, if the best Eppler was able to get from Robertson was those two young prospects years away from the majors with no guarantees they will blown, I don’t expect anything valuable from Pham, Canha or Vogey….
