<p>Although the New York Mets dished out a four-year, $40 million contract to catcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccanja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">James McCann</a></strong> this offseason, it is his backup <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nidoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tomas Nido</a></strong>, who is out-playing him in the early part of the season. And once again, Nido shined on Tuesday night with the go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning.</p>
<p>The blast ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in the Mets 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies.</p>
<p>&#8220;Puerto Rican catchers, they hit later in their career,&#8221; Nido joked after the game.</p>
<p>Nido has slugged two home runs, while driving in six RBIs in his last seven games. His batting average has climbed up to .260, to go along with an impressive .835 OPS.</p>
<p>Due to the absence of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pete Alonso</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=davisjd01,davis-000jd-&amp;search=J.D.+Davis&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">J.D. Davis</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/confomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michael Conforto</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff McNeil</a></strong>, it is Nido who has been the Mets best hitter lately with <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Francisco Lindor</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/smithdo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dominic Smith</a></strong> and McCann all struggling.</p>
<p>Injuries on the roster, along with a red-hot bat have helped Nido receive regular playing time for the first time in his career and he is taking advantage of the opportunity.</p>
<p>&#8220;If my name is in the lineup, I&#8217;m ready to go,&#8221; said Nido. &#8220;So I&#8217;m trying to build a consistent routine.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I put in a lot of work this offseason and the previous offseason, so I&#8217;m ready for whatever role they throw at me,&#8221; said Nido.</p>
<p>With all the injuries to the Mets&#8217; lineup, McCann has been seeing time at first base for the first time in his big league career, with Nido getting the bulk of the catching duties. But even before Alonso hit the injured list last Friday, Mets manager <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=rojas-010lui,rojaslu99&amp;search=Luis+Rojas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Rojas</a></strong> said the team needs to ride the hot hand behind the plate and that means giving more playing time to Nido.</p>
<p>When asked if Nido would continue to get the majority of the playing time over McCann upon Alonso&#8217;s return, Rojas said it was too early to commit to that given the uncertainty of Alonso&#8217;s status.</p>
<p>For now, Rojas is pleased with how both of his catchers are performing. McCann hit a big home run on Monday night and is starting to swing the bat a little better over the course of the last few games. But if Nido keeps hitting like this, it will be hard to keep him out of the lineup moving forward, even as the Mets get some reinforcements back.</p>

<p>Despite a late rally, the New York Mets left the tying run stranded in scoring position in the ninth inning as they dropped the first game of a four-game set with a 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies.</p>
<p>After losing the last two games in Miami to finish off a 3-6 road trip, the Mets returned home to face a Rockies team that was just 2-17 on the road this season. But that didn&#8217;t matter, as Colorado picked up their third win away from Coors Field against a Mets roster that has been decimated by injuries.</p>
<p>The Mets also lost another player in center fielder <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fargajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Johneshwy Fargas</a></strong>, who suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder after slamming into the wall while trying to make a catch in the fourth inning.</p>
<p>Rockies left-hander <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gombeau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Austin Gomber</a></strong>, who had a road ERA north of six entering the night, stifled the Amazins&#8217; depleted offense going eight innings, while allowing two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts.</p>
<p>One of the few bright spots for the Mets on Monday night was <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccanja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">James McCann</a></strong>, who played his first professional game at first base and produced his second home run of the year, along with a diving play in the field. But unfortunately, the team couldn&#8217;t do much else at the plate besides a <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/drurybr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Drury</a></strong> solo homer in the ninth to cut the deficit to one run.</p>
<p>While <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mazeipa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Patrick Mazeika</a></strong> followed up Drury&#8217;s homer with a single to right, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/villajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jonathan Villar</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Francisco Lindor</a></strong> failed to capitalize, before McCann struck out to leave the tying run on second base.</p>
<p>&#8220;Petey threw the ball well,&#8221; said McCann. &#8220;Unfortunately as an offense we didn&#8217;t come through enough.&#8221;</p>
<p>Left-handed pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=peterda01,peters012dav&amp;search=David+Peterson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Peterson</a></strong> was on the losing end of Monday night&#8217;s contest, but produced a solid outing. Peterson went six innings, giving up three runs on two homers and an RBI triple.</p>
<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t feel good when you lose, no matter how well you pitch,&#8221; said Peterson.</p>
<p>Peterson&#8217;s start can be looked at as a positive given the length he was able to provide in order to limit the bullpen usage to just three innings. Due to several injuries in the rotation, the bullpen has been overworked as of late, and last night, despite the loss, the Mets only had to use two relievers in <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/barneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob Barnes</a></strong>, who tossed two scoreless innings, and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/diazye01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Yennsy Diaz</a></strong>, who handled the ninth.</p>
<p>Following the club&#8217;s third straight loss, Mets manager <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=rojas-010lui,rojaslu99&amp;search=Luis+Rojas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Rojas</a></strong> tried to find a silver lining despite the current bleak state of the team.</p>
<p>&#8220;There are challenges in different ways in this game and in life, I think we have the right attitude toward anything that comes our way,&#8221; said Rojas. &#8220;These things keep happening and it has happened a lot because guys play hard.&#8221;</p>
<p>On the bright side, Mets&#8217; ace <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/degroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong> is set to make his return from the I.L. on Tuesday against the Rockies in Game 2 of this series. With as rough as the offense has been the past few days, the Mets might need the steady hitting deGrom to put the team on his back with both his arm and bat in order to get them back in the win column.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s no secret that the New York Mets have been decimated by injuries in the month of May.</p>
<p>And on Monday, acting general manager Zack Scott provided updates on the status of some of the team&#8217;s injured players prior to the start of the Amazins&#8217; seven-game home stand.</p>
<p>Lets start with the position players.</p>
<p>Regarding outfielder <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/confomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michael Conforto</a></strong> and second baseman <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff McNeil</a></strong>, who strained their hamstrings in the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays eight days ago, Scott called their injuries &#8220;significant,&#8221; and noted that they will be out for a &#8220;while.&#8221; As of now, the Mets are looking at late-June as a realistic timetable for their return.</p>
<p>Center fielder <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> is dealing with a nerve issue in his finger and Scott says they are trying to reduce the pain and find a level of tolerance in which he can play through it. For now, he is still not swinging a bat.</p>
<p>Third baseman <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=davisjd01,davis-000jd-&amp;search=J.D.+Davis&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">J.D. Davis</a></strong>, who started a rehab assignment in Triple-A late last week, was out of the lineup for Syracuse on Sunday with neck stiffness, and he is still not ready to return to the big league club, per Scott.</p>
<p>While there was certainly a lot of bad news to be delivered, Scott did provide some positive updates including the status of first baseman <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pete Alonso</a></strong>, who landed on the injured list with a wrist/hand issue on Friday. According to Scott, Alonso is expected to return quickly and should be back next week.</p>
<p>Versatile utility man <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guilllu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Guillorme</a></strong> has been out with a strained oblique since April 30, and he is set to undergo some imaging soon to determine the progress of his recovery. The Mets hope he can start a rehab assignment next week.</p>
<p>As for the pitching staff, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/carraca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Carlos Carrasco</a></strong> (torn right hamstring) won&#8217;t be back until that late-June/early July time frame either, per Scott.</p>
<p>Carrasco ramped up to six innings in a simulated game earlier this month, but wasn&#8217;t able to push the muscle as much as they would&#8217;ve liked in order to be ready for game speed. The right-hander has since re-joined the Mets and has been seen playing catch recently. But he hasn&#8217;t been doing much else.</p>
<div id="attachment_338680" style="width: 770px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-338680" class="size-full wp-image-338680" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/USATSI_16135005_168390281_lowres-e1621891794445.jpg" alt="" width="760" height="506" /><p id="caption-attachment-338680" class="wp-caption-text">Mandatory Credit: Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports</p></div>
<p>Yesterday&#8217;s starter <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/yamamjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jordan Yamamoto</a></strong> (right shoulder soreness) received an MRI on Monday and the Mets are reviewing the results in order to determine next steps.</p>
<p>On a brighter note, Scott was also able to provide good news for one big bullpen arm, as the Mets could be getting reliever <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lugose01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Seth Lugo</a></strong> back from the injured list as early as next week (May 31st).</p>
<p>Despite the Mets&#8217; stacked IL, ace pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/degroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong> will make his return on Tuesday. And the team should be getting some important reinforcements back in the next week or two in order to replenish the cupboard.</p>
<p>To look even further ahead, pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/syndeno01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Noah Syndergaard</a></strong> (<strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/johnto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tommy John</a></strong> surgery) began a rehab assignment last week and barring any setbacks, he should be back by mid-June, which will be a significant boost to the starting rotation. He will start for the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday.</p>

<p>First of all, why not? The Mets have been so ravaged by injuries lately that they need all the help they can get in order to stay afloat until they get some of their regulars back.</p>
<p>And, versatile utility man <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gordode01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dee Strange-Gordon</a></strong> might just be the perfect low-risk, high-reward move they could make.</p>
<p>Strange-Gordon was released by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend after signing a minor league deal with them in April.</p>
<p>Despite not receiving a call up to the big-league club, Strange-Gordon was off to a hot start for the Brewers&#8217; Triple-A affiliate in Nashville. In 45 plate appearances, Strange-Gordon slashed .333/.378/.500 in the minors.</p>
<p>Strange-Gordon just turned 33 years old last month and has the ability to play second base, shortstop, center field and left field. This versatility is just what the Mets need given the amount of players they&#8217;ve lost to the I.L.</p>
<p>Although he struggled with the Seattle Mariners in a COVID-shortened 2020 campaign (.200/.268/.213), Strange-Gordon was solid in his last full season in the big leagues in 2019, where he hit .275/.304/.359 with 22 stolen bases.</p>
<p>In 10 MLB seasons, Strange-Gordon is a two-time All Star, and has won a batting title, Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Award.</p>
<p>He is also a three-time MLB stolen base leader and would bring speed to the Mets&#8217; lineup. While he is not as fast as he once was as the stolen base champ, Strange-Gordon still ranked in the 85th percentile in speed last season, per <a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/dee-strange-gordon-543829?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb"><strong>Baseball Savant</strong></a>.</p>
<p>The bottom line is this: the Mets have had to use so many pieces in the first two months of the season that they&#8217;ve become extremely thin and now lack depth as a result. They recently traded for outfielder <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/maybica01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Cameron Maybin</a></strong>, who is 0-for-16 with nine strikeouts to start his Mets career.</p>
<p>So, we will ask this again, why not sign Strange-Gordon and see what he has left? What do the Mets have to lose?</p>
<p>Acting general manager Zack Scott must do something because at the moment, the Mets do not appear to be any closer to getting any of their injured starting position players back with the exception of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=davisjd01,davis-000jd-&amp;search=J.D.+Davis&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">J.D. Davis</a></strong>, who is still expected to be back with the Mets this week despite dealing with neck stiffness on his rehab assignment which kept him out of Syracuse&#8217;s lineup on Sunday.</p>
<p>Besides Davis, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pete Alonso</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff McNeil</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/confomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michael Conforto</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pillake01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kevin Pillar</a></strong> all currently do not have a timetable to return.</p>
<p>That is a big problem given the current state of the roster. And although they were able to take two-of-three in Atlanta last week and pull off a thrilling extra innings victory in their first game in Miami, the Mets&#8217; glaring holes showed up offensively in the next two games, as they scored a total of two runs to drop the series to the Marlins.</p>
<p>After a 3-6 road trip, the Mets head home to face the abysmal Colorado Rockies for a four-game set. The Rockies have only two road wins this year, however, the Mets&#8217; current lineup is so decimated by injuries that it is no sure thing that they can win the series.</p>
<p>This is why they need to bring in more external reinforcements whether that be via trade or on the free-agent market. Signing Strange-Gordon would be a start.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t look now, but after some early season hiccups, the New York Mets have quietly become one of the best defensive teams in the major leagues.</p>
<p>As of Thursday afternoon, the Mets ranked second in MLB with 22 defensive runs saved (Thanks to <a href="https://www.fieldingbible.com/TeamDefensiveRunsSaved"><strong>fieldingbible.com</strong></a>). One of the biggest reason&#8217;s for the Mets turnaround from a bottom of the league defensive team to near the top, is their aggressive shifting in 2021.</p>
<p>The Mets now shift the second most in baseball at 55.5% (shifted only 21.4% in 2020), only the Dodgers have more often at 55.6% in 2021. With that, the Mets are tied for best in the majors with 11 defensive runs saved while shifting.</p>
<p>So, how did they get to this point?</p>
<p>It didn&#8217;t seem too long ago when the Mets were booting routine plays at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs, which led to several big innings and a series sweep.</p>
<p>But in reality, they have come a long way since hitting rock bottom in the field.</p>
<p>Despite suffering an array of injuries on their roster, the Mets have stayed afloat via pitching and defense. And it seems as though a new player is stepping up every night to make a gem at their position, which has saved several runs in the field.</p>
<p>Metsmerized is here to give you a closer look at how they&#8217;ve been able to turn things around on defense.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Outfield</strong></span></h3>
<p>Let&#8217;s start in the outfield.</p>
<p>On Wednesday night, it was rookie <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leekh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Khalil Lee</a></strong>, who made a great catch near the wall in right field to bail out relief pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=castrmi01,castro002mig&amp;search=Miguel+Castro&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Miguel Castro</a></strong> and save a run in the seventh inning.</p>
<p>But these plays have become a bit of the norm as of late.</p>
<p>Before <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/confomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michael Conforto</a></strong> hit the I.L. with a hamstring strain last Sunday, he was playing a gold glove caliber right field. These days, it is not unusual to see Conforto robbing hitters with leaping grabs at the wall, or laying out to take an extra base hit away in the gap.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Khalil Lee doesn&#39;t look ready to face <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MLB?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#MLB</a> pitching yet, but his glove sure has looked golden in the outfield. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Mets?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Mets</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/LGM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#LGM</a> (via <a href="https://twitter.com/Mets?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Mets</a>) <a href="https://t.co/1HgWYvdlE5">pic.twitter.com/1HgWYvdlE5</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Matt Musico (@mmusico8) <a href="https://twitter.com/mmusico8/status/1395363978860191749?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 20, 2021</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>The Mets will miss his glove out in right, but when he gets back, he should resume his case as one of baseball&#8217;s best defensive outfielders. Oddly enough, according to Fangraphs, Conforto has negative-one defensive runs saved and a -0.3 UZR, but if you&#8217;ve watched him out there this year, your eyes will tell you a different story and these numbers should improve as the season progresses.</p>
<p>In center field, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pillake01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kevin Pillar</a></strong> have gotten the bulk of the playing time with defensive whiz <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/almoral01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Albert Almora</a></strong> Jr. getting some action out there, as well. Unfortunately, all three players now reside on the IL, but before they went down with their respective injuries, all three individuals were more than steady.</p>
<p>Nimmo has yet to record a DRS in center, but has one in left field this year. According to the numbers, he is much less of a liability in center this season and appears to be more comfortable. While some said Pillar couldn&#8217;t play center anymore, he has posted a 0.9 UZR. And as for Almora, he has a 0.4 UZR and has made several amazing catches at the wall this season.</p>
<p>One surprise player, who has shown major improvement in left field is <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/smithdo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dominic Smith</a></strong>. In 251.1 innings, Smith leads all Mets outfielders with three defensive runs saved and a 1.1 UZR. This is a promising sign given the fact that he was thrust out there this season due to the fact that MLB took away the DH in the National League  after having a universal one in 2020.</p>
<div id="attachment_337794" style="width: 1071px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-337794" class="size-full wp-image-337794" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/USATSI_16051360_168390281_lowres.jpg" alt="" width="1061" height="707" /><p id="caption-attachment-337794" class="wp-caption-text">Mandatory Credit: Dennis Schneidler-USA TODAY Sports</p></div>
<h3><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Infield</strong></span></h3>
<p>Speaking of Smith, who got his first start of the season at first base on Wednesday, he  made a tremendous pick on a throw in the dirt to get out of a three-run fifth inning. This kept the game within two runs and allowed the Mets to come back to take the lead later on.</p>
<p>Regular first baseman <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pete Alonso</a></strong> has also made positive strides defensively this season after a rough 2020 campaign. Although Alonso does not yet have a defensive run saved, he has made numerous nifty diving plays at his position to save several balls from reaching the outfield grass.</p>
<p>With second baseman <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff McNeil</a></strong> (two DRS this season) dealing with a hamstring issue, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perazjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jose Peraza</a></strong> has stepped up in his place and has already produced a defensive run saved. Not only that, but Peraza has made some impressive leaping grabs and picks in the field.</p>
<p>Although recently signed shortstop <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Francisco Lindor</a></strong> hasn&#8217;t gotten off to the best of starts at the plate, he has been quite smooth in the field. Lindor has shown off his range and the ability to turn a number of double plays to help his pitchers escape jams and limit their pitch counts. He has also recorded a 0.2 UZR.</p>
<p>At the hot corner, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=davisjd01,davis-000jd-&amp;search=J.D.+Davis&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">J.D. Davis</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/villajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jonathan Villar</a></strong> have mainly manned the third base position. With Davis and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guilllu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Guillorme</a></strong> making their way back from the IL, Villar has stepped up as the everyday starter at third. Both Davis and Villar have been shaky in the field with a combined five errors and negative-three DRS between the two of them. With Davis close to a return, he will likely slide back in at third, and Villar could get some time in center field, per <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=rojas-010lui,rojaslu99&amp;search=Luis+Rojas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Rojas</a></strong>.</p>
<div id="attachment_337586" style="width: 770px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-337586" class="wp-image-337586 size-full" src="https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/USATSI_15664501-scaled-e1621613815474.jpg" alt="" width="760" height="507" /><p id="caption-attachment-337586" class="wp-caption-text">Credit: Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports</p></div>
<h3><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Catcher</strong></span></h3>
<p>Behind the plate, the Mets have upgraded significantly at catcher after watching <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ramoswi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Wilson Ramos</a></strong> struggle defensively for the past two seasons.</p>
<p>They did this by signing <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccanja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">James McCann</a></strong> to a four-year, $40 million deal. While McCann has had an ugly start offensively slashing .206/.269/.242, he has done a great job handling the Mets&#8217; pitching staff and fielding his position behind the backstop. In 229 innings, McCann has one DRS and a -1.5 frame rate.</p>
<p>His backup <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nidoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tomas Nido</a></strong> has out slugged him at the plate and has been excellent behind it as well, with one DRS and a 0.7 frame rate.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Pitcher</strong></span></h3>
<p>The Mets&#8217; pitching staff has also flashed the leather in the field this season. According to fielding bible, Mets pitchers have two DRS, which is fourth most in MLB.</p>
<p>Gold Glover <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stromma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Marcus Stroman</a></strong> has posted one DRS, and right-hander <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walketa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Taijuan Walker</a></strong> leads the team with two of his own.</p>
<p>Ace <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/degroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong> fields his position well and could very well be a Gold Glove candidate this year too.</p>

<p>New York Mets starting pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=peterda01,peters012dav&amp;search=David+Peterson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">David Peterson</a></strong> has been very much hot and cold in his second season in the majors this year.</p>
<p>In Wednesday night&#8217;s outing against the Atlanta Braves, Peterson was magnificent through the first four innings.</p>
<p>The left-hander set down the first 10 hitters he faced, recording five strikeouts, before allowing a one out single to <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/freemfr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Freddie Freeman</a></strong> in the fourth.</p>
<p>However, Peterson has had some bad starts this year, where he completely unravels in an inning, and tonight was no different. After four dominant frames, Peterson completely fell apart in the fifth.</p>
<p>With <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rileyau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Austin Riley</a></strong> standing on third with two outs, Peterson plunked catcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/contrwi02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">William Contreras</a></strong>. He then gave up the lead by surrendering a single to former Met <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heredgu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Guillermo Heredia</a></strong>. But that&#8217;s not all, opposing pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=mortoch02,mortoch01&amp;search=Charlie+Morton&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Charlie Morton</a></strong> smacked an RBI single back up the middle to put the Braves ahead 2-1.</p>
<p>Following a mound visit from pitching coach <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hefneje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeremy Hefner</a></strong>, Peterson walked Ronald Acuna, but the ball got away from catcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccanja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">James McCann</a></strong>, which allowed the third run of the inning to come home and score.</p>
<p>This forced Mets manager <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=rojas-010lui,rojaslu99&amp;search=Luis+Rojas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Rojas</a></strong> to lift Peterson from the game in favor of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=smithdr01,smith-004dre,smith-003dre,smith-001dre&amp;search=Drew+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Drew Smith</a></strong>, who was able to limit the damage to just three runs in the frame.</p>
<p>Peterson&#8217;s final line for the night was: 4.2 innings, three runs on five hits, five strikeouts and one walk. His ERA on the season shot up to 4.97.</p>
<p>With <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/degroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walketa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Taijuan Walker</a></strong> on the injured list, the Mets currently have two healthy starters in their rotation in Peterson and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stromma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Marcus Stroman</a></strong>.</p>
<p>While Stroman has been nothing short of amazing this year, Peterson has been inconsistent at best. The 25-year-old must improve if he hopes to keep his spot in the rotation once <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/carraca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Carlos Carrasco</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/syndeno01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Noah Syndergaard</a></strong> return.</p>

<p>Another day, anoth-, well &#8212; you know the drill.</p>
<p>On Wednesday afternoon, the Mets saw their injured list grow to 14 players. And this time, it was pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walketa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Taijuan Walker</a></strong>, who joined the IL club with left side tightness.</p>
<p>Although Walker said this was something that had been nagging him in his last few starts, it got worse in Monday&#8217;s outing, forcing him out after just three innings of work.</p>
<p>Now, Walker lands on the IL and the Mets will be in need of another starter to take his spot. They have already been doing bullpen games every fifth day, but with <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/degroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong> still on the IL as well, they almost certainly will be calling up a starter from the minors to replace him.</p>
<p>Potential names, who could take Walker&#8217;s place in the rotation are left-hander <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=szapuc000tho&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Thomas Szapucki</a></strong> and right-hander <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/yamamjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jordan Yamamoto</a>, </strong>who have both spent the season with Triple-A Syracuse.</p>
<p>In the meantime, the Mets did get some promising news regarding another injured starter in their rotation. And that&#8217;s their ace in deGrom, who is set to make a rehab start for the St. Lucie Mets at Single-A on Thursday.</p>
<p>If all goes well with deGrom, we should see him back with the big league club in no time, which would be a huge boost for a Mets rotation that is currently without two of their three best starters.</p>

<p>&#8211; UPDATE &#8211;</p>
<p>Well Mets fans, we finally have some good news on the injury-front!</p>
<p>Following Tuesday night&#8217;s series opening win over the Braves, Taijuan Walker went for an MRI on his left side. Pregame Tuesday evening, Luis Rojas announced that the MRI came back clean and Walker was feeling great today.</p>
<p>However, Rojas said right now it is too soon to commit to Walker making his next scheduled start in the rotation, and the team will take this on a day-to-day basis.</p>
<p>&#8220;He has great communication skills, he came to my office and told me what he felt. We all trust him of course, and the MRI results are there. So now we&#8217;re gonna see what we can check out with the video to help maybe fix some things so he doesn&#8217;t get this tightness throughout an outing again,&#8221; Rojas said.</p>
<p>For now, it seems as if the Mets may&#8217;ve finally dodged a big-time bullet on the injury-front.</p>
<p>&#8211; ORIGINAL &#8211;</p>
<p>Another day, another injury.</p>
<p>The New York Mets have been hit hard with the injury bug lately, and this trend continued on Monday night against the Atlanta Braves as starting pitcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/walketa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Taijuan Walker</a></strong> exited the game with left side tightness.</p>
<p>Walker tossed three scoreless innings, but was unable to swing a bat, and his velocity was noticeably down during his outing. He showed discomfort on the mound in the third, but was able to finish out the inning.</p>
<p>However, this forced the Mets to get <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reidfse01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sean Reid-Foley</a></strong> up in the bullpen. And as a result, Walker&#8217;s night was done after just 33 pitches as Reid-Foley entered for him to start the fourth. Walker is the latest Met to go down with an injury, and third in the last 24 hours after <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/confomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michael Conforto</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff McNeil</a></strong> hit the injured list with hamstring injuries.</p>
<p>The Mets&#8217; I.L. has become quite lengthy and includes Conforto, McNeil, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=davisjd01,davis-000jd-&amp;search=J.D.+Davis&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">J.D. Davis</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Brandon Nimmo</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/degroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob deGrom</a></strong>, among others.</p>
<p>With Tuesday&#8217;s starter yet to be announced, the Mets could be looking for another arm to replace Walker if he is forced to miss an extended period of time.</p>
<p>Right now, it seems like the Mets have been losing a key player to injury almost every time they step on the field.</p>

<p>What year is it again?</p>
<p>According to Jacob Resnick of <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/Jacob_Resnick/status/1394735259330228226">SNY</a></strong>, the New York Mets have called up utility man <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tovarwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Wilfredo Tovar</a></strong> from Triple-A Syracuse to replace outfielder <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pillake01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Kevin Pillar</a></strong>, who landed on the injured list after getting hit in the face with a pitch on Monday night.</p>
<p>The team also designated catcher Deivy Grullón for assignment to make room on the 40-Man roster for Tovar.</p>
<p>The Mets&#8217; I.L. continues to grow by the day, as Pillar went down in a scary incident in the seventh inning after getting struck in the nose by a fastball from Atlanta Braves reliever <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=webbja01,webb--006jac&amp;search=Jacob+Webb&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jacob Webb</a></strong>.</p>
<p>The center fielder was forced to go to the hospital to get a CT scan last night. And on Tuesday morning, it was revealed that Pillar had suffered multiple nasal fractures and was set to meet with a facial specialist in Atlanta.</p>
<p>As a result, the Mets called up Tovar, who they originally signed back in 2007 at the age of 15. Tovar made his MLB debut with the Mets back in 2013 before bouncing around the league on several minor league deals. The 29-year-old last appeared in the majors with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019.</p>
<p>Overall, Tovar is a natural middle infielder, but has played the corner infield and outfield spots in his career. He has also posted a .188 average, with 0 home runs and seven RBIs in the majors.</p>
<p>This season, Tovar was off to an anemic start offensively for Syracuse, slashing a mere .206/.349/.235 with seven RBIs in 10 games.</p>
<p>The Mets hope Tovar can become their latest unsung hero, as they continue to try to tread water until they get some healthy reinforcements back to their club.</p>
<p>But in all likelihood, Tovar will serve as an extra bench piece, which resembles how beleaguered the Mets&#8217; depth currently is, given the mass amount of injuries they&#8217;ve endured.</p>

And prior to the game, the team placed <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mcneije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeff McNeil</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/confomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Michael Conforto</a></strong> on the injured list.</p>
<p>To make matters worse, Walker left his outing after just three innings. However, long reliever <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reidfse01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sean Reid-Foley</a></strong> stepped up to toss three perfect innings behind him.</p>
<p>While the game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh, the Mets once again saw an unlikely hero step up in a big spot. In this case, it was backup catcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nidoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tomas Nido</a></strong>, who led off with a double against <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/friedma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Max Fried</a></strong>.</p>
<p>With Nido on second and nobody out, the Mets&#8217; usual starting catcher <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccanja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">James McCann</a></strong>, who has struggled offensively this year,  came off the bench and delivered his biggest knock of the season by driving in Nido with a double of his own to produce the game&#8217;s first run.</p>
<p>&#8220;The approach was to get something I could handle and try to get a good swing on it,&#8221; said McCann. &#8220;Hitting in general is not easy to do, and pinch hitting isn&#8217;t easy either. I was just trying to get a pitch I could do damage with.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Mets signed McCann to a four-year, $40 million deal in the offseason. And although he has done an excellent job with handling the Mets&#8217; pitching staff behind the plate, McCann was hitting just .200 with a .494 OPS coming into the night.</p>
<p>Above all else, it&#8217;s safe to say that he needed that hit more than anyone and the hope is that it can help him get things going offensively.</p>
<p>&#8220;That was huge for him,&#8221; said manager <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=rojas-010lui,rojaslu99&amp;search=Luis+Rojas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Luis Rojas</a></strong>. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad he made a good two strike swing. That&#8217;s something he is going to need because you battle in at-bats and find yourself sometimes.&#8221;</p>
<p>McCann&#8217;s backup had himself a big night, as well. Nido helped set the table in the seventh and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the contest.</p>

<p>While Nido has always been known for his solid defense behind the plate, he has made tremendous strides with his bat since the start of last season.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think it goes back to last year and the offseason,&#8221; said Nido. &#8220;What&#8217;s put together on a daily basis builds up to what&#8217;s happening now. The good ones you build on, the bad ones you take away so you know how to adjust.&#8221;</p>
<p>After taking the lead with back-to-back doubles from their catchers, the Amazins&#8217; loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, which brought up Pillar. In a scary incident, Pillar was forced to exit after getting hit in the face by a pitch.</p>
<p>Pillar hit the ground hard with his nose gushing blood, but he was able to walk off under his own power. Rojas said Pillar went to the hospital to get a CT scan after the game, but luckily, the center fielder tweeted afterwards that he was doing OK.</p>
<p>The Mets added their second run of the game on the hit by pitch, and Khalil Lee entered to pinch run for Pillar at first base.</p>
<p>In the top of the eighth, Nido was at it again with a one-out single. He&#8217;d advance after the ball got away on <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hagerja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jake Hager</a></strong>&#8216;s strike out, before coming around to score the third run on a bloop double off the bat of <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=fargas000joh&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Johneshwy Fargas</a></strong>, who picked up his first career MLB hit in his first game as a Met.</p>
<p>These runs proved to be all the Mets needed, as <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/familje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Jeurys Familia</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/maytr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Trevor May</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=diazed04,diazed03,diaz--005edw&amp;search=Edwin+Diaz&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Edwin Diaz</a></strong> were able to hold on in the final three innings.</p>
<p>While it appears as though the Mets just keep finding ways to win, it will only get trickier until they start getting some reinforcements back from the I.L., which is a list that continues to grow by the day.</p>
<p>In the meantime, they are going to have to keep relying on their depth. Not to mention, they will also need some of their big guns to step up and carry more of the load in McCann, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindofr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Francisco Lindor</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alonspe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Pete Alonso</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/smithdo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dominic Smith</a></strong>.</p>
<p>With Walker headed for an MRI on Tuesday, and Pillar&#8217;s status in question, the Mets could once again find themselves making roster moves prior to their next game. But for now, all they can hope for is that the next man up mentality keeps paying off.</p>
