2022 Review

Drew Smith‘s fourth season with the Mets was a fine one. He appeared in more games and threw more innings than any other season in his career. Though, the injury bug continued to impact Smith, as he missed over a month with a lat strain. To this point in his short career, he has never been healthy for a full season. Smith has always shown signs of greatness, but his ability to stay on the field has held him back.

Smith continued to show greatness in 2022, as his 3.33 ERA was one of the best in the Mets’ bullpen. His 1.152 WHIP was only worse than Edwin Díaz and Adam Ottavino. Smith provided stability in a bullpen that had its fair share of inconsistency, but even he struggled at times.

He used his fastball 57% of the time, while using his slider as his main out pitch at 35.5%. He also tossed in a curveball (6.4%) and a changeup (5.5%). He wasn’t afraid to use his fastball to get a strikeout, and utilized all of his pitches in different situations. This all culminating in his above-average season.

Smith didn’t allow a run in 2022 until his 13th appearance on May 13 against the Mariners. The Mets used him predominantly in the 7th and 8th innings, high-leverage situations. He had a 1.99 ERA as of June 24, but then hit a rough patch and the lowest his ERA would be the rest of the season was 2.48. From June 29 to September 21, Smith threw 9 2/3 innings (injury) and allowed 10 runs on 15 hits. However, he finished the season strong. He did not allow a single run in his final six outings of the season, and only allowed five baserunners.

For Smith, he managed to return from his injury on September 21 and only allow one run to finish off the season. The unfortunate thing is that his important arm was missing when the Mets needed him most in a divisional run in September. The young reliever also got his first taste of the postseason, as he threw one inning in the Wild Card Series against the Padres. He struck out a batter, hit a batter, and allowed a hit.

Really, the only concern with Smith, besides the injury issues, is his proneness to give up the home-run ball. If Smith can limit to hard contact and the long ball, he can become an elite bullpen arm.

2023 Outlook

Drew Smith still has three more full seasons under team control before becoming a free agent. His value in 2023 is going to be more than ever. Most of the Mets primary bullpen arms from 2022 is hitting the free agent market, with only Edwin Díaz and Drew Smith locked up for 2023 at the moment. While the Mets will likely be bringing in a few arms to fill out the remaining spots, they can feel comfortable having Drew Smith in a setup role for the moment.

The biggest goal for him in 2023 is to stay healthy all year while trying to stifle the home-run ball, and then he can show off his craft. Smith has proven that he can be reliable when he is able to stay on the field, the only issue is doing that. Next season can be his first chance at becoming one of the top relievers in baseball if he is indeed tossed into those bigger moments. Regardless of how he is used in 2023, he will be one of the most important arms in the Mets’ bullpen next season.

2022 Review

Mark Canha was a breath of fresh air in the middle of the Mets lineup in his first season in New York. While he didn’t have the flashiest of statistics, it’s the little things that he did well.

From leading the major leagues with 28 HBP’s to working long at-bats seemingly each plate appearance, Mark Canha did whatever he could to get on base.

The .367 OBP was among the highest of his career, and his 17.9% K% was the lowest of his career. There is no question that Mark Canha was a difficult out, and that helped the entire lineup’s mentality of getting starting pitchers out of the game early.

The Mets brought in Canha, along with Starling Marte and Eduardo Escobar, to change the dynamic of the Mets offense. Billy Eppler strategically chose players that get clutch hits, and put up good at-bats. Canha hit .275 with a .377 OBP and .417 SLG with runners in scoring position in 2022. He also drove in 49 of his 61 runs in those spots.

Canha was also brought in to try to improve the left field position that has been subpar for years. Dominic Smith was the primary left fielder in 2021, and did not live up to his incredible 2020 season. In 2021, Smith had a .244 BA, .304 OBP, and a.363 SLG. He only hit 11 home runs and 58 RBI. During his 2021 season in Oakland, Mark Canha had a .231 BA, .358 OBP, and a .387 SLG. Not major improvements over Smith, but combining those with the 17 home runs and 61 RBI was enough to earn him the starting job on the Mets.

The Mets didn’t sign Canha to be a guy that hits .300 (even though he was hitting .356 as late as May 2), or hits 30 home runs. The Mets brought Mark Canha to New York to grind out at-bats, bring a positive atmosphere to the clubhouse, and bring a veteran presence to the club.

Defensively, Canha did his part. While he only had an OAA (outs above average) of 0, that was on par with his career numbers. The highest OAA he ever had was in 2021, where he had 1. For comparison, Dominic Smith put up a -10 OAA in 2021. Therefore, having someone with even a 0 OAA is quite the refreshing sight for a team that hasn’t excelled defensively in the outfield over the past few seasons.

2023 Outlook

Canha is under contract for the 2023 season and has a team option for 2024. As of right now, he will likely be the starting left fielder for the Mets in 2o23.

However, there are a few different scenarios that could change that.

First and foremost is the biggest question mark of the off-season for the Mets: Aaron Judge. If the Mets sign Aaron Judge, they will need to figure out where they want to play him. That will also then throw into play whether they bring Brandon Nimmo back or not. If the Mets sign Judge and re-sign Nimmo, then who knows what the outfield will look like. Out of Judge, Nimmo, Marte, and Canha, Canha would likely be the odd man out. However, would the Mets throw Judge in the DH role? Maybe Mark Canha?

These are all questions that Billy Eppler will have to tackle this winter, and they will impact the future of the Mets greatly.

As of right now, Mark Canha is slated to be back out there in left field for the Mets come 2023, and will likely be grinding out at-bats right in the middle of the batting order as he did so well in 2022. If he can do what he did in 2022, and maybe even improve those numbers a little bit, he will continue to be an important piece of the New York Mets lineup.

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Seattle Mariners Friday ended their 21 year postseason drought thanks to a pinch-hit, walk-off home run off the bat of Cal Raleigh. The magical moment clinched the club a spot in the playoffs as a Wild Card team, marking the first time they will be in the Postseason since 2001.

The Mets didn’t have the same magic Friday night, as they fell to the Braves 5-2. Jacob deGrom surrendered three solo home runs to Austin Riley, Matt Olson, and Dansby Swanson. The Mets made a push in the ninth, as they had the bases loaded with two out. However, after long battle with Kenley Jansen, Tyler Naquin struck out to end the game.
Good morning, Mets fans!

The Machine, Albert Pujols, hit his 699th and 700th career home runs Friday against the Dodgers. Not only did he achieve the incredible feat by hitting two home runs in one night, but he did it in Los Angeles, a city which he called home for a decade.

He became the fourth player all time to reach the 700 home run plateau, joining Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, and Babe Ruth.

To make matters even sweeter for Mets fans, Mets radio broadcaster Wayne Randazzo was on the call for Apple TV for both home runs. That means that his voice will live in infamy over the legendary moment forever.

The Mets also had a great day Friday. The Braves lost to the Phillies, and the Mets beat the Athletics 9-2. This pushed the Mets lead in the division to 2.5 games, and their magic number to clinch the NL East shrunk to 9.
Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets lost a great game against the Phillies Friday, as the 2-1 battle went to the 10th inning.

Max Scherzer tossed another gem, but the bats were silent against Philadelphia’s pitching staff. Liz Evangelou provided a further recap of the game.

Big news from Major League Baseball Friday, as it became public that Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. was suspended for 80 games for performance enhancing drugs.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that Tatis tested positive for Clostebol, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The star had just begun a rehab assignment after missing the entire season to this point with a fractured left wrist.

The Padres were severely banking on the return of Tatis’ bat to the lineup. They also felt really good about their World Series chances after acquiring Juan Soto at the trade deadline. Now that they will not have the thump of Tatis in the lineup, it makes their gamble to get Soto even more risky.

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets lost Friday night, 9-6. However, it was a hard fought game from the Mets, as they once trailed it 8-0. Liz Evangelou provided a further recap of the game. The Mets will play a doubleheader Saturday, with game one starting at 1:10 p.m. ET.

The highlight of the day was broken by Chris McCosky of Detroit News reported that Miguel Cabrera told him directly that he will not be retiring after the 2022 season. Instead, Cabrera intends on finishing out his contract and retiring after 2023.

This is interesting, because a lot of people were just assuming that he was going to be retiring after this season. Rob Manfred was even under the same premise, as he chose Cabrera to be in the All-Star Game for a “final time”.

The Tigers designated hitter has over 500 career home runs and over 3,000 hits, and will continue to add to those totals over the next year-plus.
