The Mets had three big leaguers rehabbing with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, and all three delivered excellent nights at the plate. Francisco Lindor went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, Tyrone Taylor finished 3-for-5 with a double and a homer, and Ronny Mauricio drove in three runs while going 2-for-4.

Lindor came away from the game healthy and could be activated for the Mets’ doubleheader on Wednesday.

On the big league front, the Mets dropped their series opener against the Cubs, 9-6. Kodai Senga was once again inconsistent, looking terrific early before falling off as his start progressed. Offensively, Bo Bichette and Francisco Alvarez each homered, recorded multi-hit games, and drove in four of the Mets’ six runs.

Today, the Mets play a doubleheader. Nolan McLean (4-4, 3.67 ERA) and Sean Manaea (1-2, 4.64 ERA) are scheduled to start for New York, while the Cubs have yet to officially determine their starters. Shota Imanaga and Javier Assad are expected to start, though it remains unclear who will start which game. Game 1 will air at 1:10 p.m. ET on SNY, while Game 2 will air at 7:10 p.m. ET on WPIX.

The Wave’s Jorge Eckardt, who also writes for MMO, wrote about Mets Hall of Famer Edgardo Alfonzo returning to Brooklyn for a week to help fill in on the Cyclones’ coaching staff, rejoining the affiliate he managed to a New York-Penn League title in 2019.

David Stearns held a press conference Tuesday as the Mets returned home, addressing the state of the team amid its recent slide. Here were some of the key points, as noted by MMO‘s own Patrick Glynn:

The rotation is the biggest concern. Because of injuries and inconsistency, the Mets are evaluating starters turn by turn, with high walk rates and underperformance from talented arms among the main issues.

• There is broader roster frustration. Steve Cohen expects the team to be better, and Stearns said the club’s inconsistencies have been widespread, shifting from the offense earlier in the year to the starting pitching more recently.
• The Mets are keeping their trade deadline options open. Stearns said they can prepare for “parallel paths” and wait until closer to the August 3 deadline before deciding on a direction.
• The team will re-evaluate how it assesses injury risk, though Stearns noted this year’s IL issues have not been limited to players with prior injury histories.
• Jorge Polanco is expected back before the All-Star break, while Lindor is expected to play shortstop “more days than not,” after he returns.

Darryl Strawberry homered in the fourth and the Mets drew six walks, but as a team they left nine men on base while managing only six hits.

After 95 pitches and five-plus innings, Manaea wanted the baseball a little longer. The Mets, protecting both a tie game and their pitcher, chose otherwise.

“I felt like I could give a couple more,” Manaea said, “but I respect the decision.”

The Phillies made him work for it. They put runners on base in each of the first four innings and capitalized on a few defensive mistakes to erase an early deficit. Manaea never fully got into a rhythm, but he also never allowed the game to get away from him. By the time he exited, the Mets were still in position to win, which they eventually did, 6-4, behind Juan Soto’s two home runs and Marcus Semien’s seventh-inning triple.

Altogether, Manaea allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk over 5 1/3 innings.

The final line was less important than the way Manaea got there. The outing required constant adjustment. Manaea began the game by hitting Trea Turner with a pitch, then gave up a run via a single from Kyle Schwarber and an Alec Bohm RBI knock. After navigating that early trouble, he ran into another challenge in the second when Edmundo Sosa tripled to lead off the inning, but Manaea settled in and stranded him there.

The Phillies continued to create traffic over the next two innings. In the third, a passed ball and throwing error turned a Schwarber strikeout into a runner on second, and Bohm doubled him home. An inning later, Bryson Stott stole second and scored on Derek Hill’s single after an awkward throw home. Philadelphia kept pressing, but Manaea never allowed any one inning to spiral out of control.

The more encouraging part for the Mets is simply how different Manaea has looked in recent weeks. Earlier in the season, he looked as if he was scrambling to find consistency and trying to find the right balance within his arsenal. Now, the adjustments he has made are beginning to show up in tangible ways. His fastball averaged 91.5 mph on Thursday, a notable jump from the 89.6 mph it averaged in April.

For Manaea, the added velocity makes the rest of his arsenal play up. Hitters have to respect the fastball more than they did earlier in the season, which creates more separation from the sweeper and gives his cutter clearer intent. He now looks more equipped to attack hitters, rather than pitching as if he is just trying to survive each at-bat. The shift has been reflected in the way Manaea is carrying himself on the mound. He looks more comfortable, more aggressive and more like the pitcher we saw in 2024. At the very least, he has given himself more leeway to work through trouble.

On Thursday, he limited damage well enough to keep the Mets in the game and ease the burden on a staff that has become increasingly bullpen-reliant. Huascar Brazobán, A.J. Minter, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams still had to cover the final four innings, combining to allow one run, but Manaea’s start kept the night from becoming a scramble.

Of course, the Mets as a team have not been particularly sharp overall, but the production from their pitching staff deserves acknowledgment. Their bullpen owns the fourth-best ERA in baseball at 3.33, while the overall staff ranks ninth at 3.92. In close losses, the bullpen has generally not been the reason games have gotten away from the Mets.

The turning points of the game occurred later, after Manaea left. With the score tied in the seventh, Eric Wagaman pushed the Mets ahead with a pinch-hit RBI single. Then Semien, given new life after an uncaught foul-tip kept his at-bat alive, drove a José Alvarado sinker off the left center field fence for a two-run triple.

“Sean’s been great, he’s made some adjustments,” Semien said after the game. “I played behind him for a lot of years in Oakland. He’s looking a lot more like that guy.”

Coming from someone who spent years watching Manaea at his best, Semien’s comment carries some weight. He seemed to be describing not a reinvention, per se, but a reawakening.

Whether this marks a true turning point will become clearer with a larger sample of starts. What is evident, though, is that Manaea looks far more capable of giving the Mets innings than he did earlier in the season. The offense and bullpen ultimately finished the job on Thursday, but Manaea’s ability to work through traffic and prevent the game from slipping away gave them the chance to do so.

On Tuesday, the Mets fell into an immediate hole when Kodai Senga struggled through the first inning, walking the first two hitters before Sal Stewart launched a three-run homer. Spencer Steer added another homer later in the frame, putting New York down 4–0 before its offense had time to settle in.

The Mets kept chipping away. Bo Bichette’s RBI single in the third and Mark Vientos’ two-run homer in the sixth cut the deficit to 5-3. However, they missed chances with runners on in the fourth and eighth, and Cincinnati’s bullpen kept the late rally from turning into anything bigger. The Mets ended up dropping the game, 5-3.

New York will look to avoid a series sweep today in the finale. Nolan McLean (3-4, 4.01 ERA) will face off against Nick Lodolo (2-1, 5.21 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 12:40 p.m. ET on SNY.

Thursday’s performance stood out because it came after a stretch in which Soto had not looked like himself at the plate.

The Mets have bigger problems than one player’s slump, but Soto’s production carries unusual weight in their lineup. When he is driving the ball and controlling at-bats, the offense looks different. When he is not, there is significantly less margin for error around him.

Carlos Mendoza acknowledged as much after the win.

“A special player,” Mendoza said. “He is who he is but obviously we need some of the other guys to step up as well. He went cold…we kind of felt it.”

Thursday showed why.

The Mets entered the day having lost the first two games of the series and searching for signs of life. They jumped out to an early 3-1 lead behind a two-run homer from Bo Bichette and a solo shot from Jared Young, but Christian Scott could not hold it. St. Louis answered with three early home runs of their own, including a solo shot from Lars Nootbaar and a two-run homer from Jimmy Crooks, and they moved ahead 4-3 in the second inning. Scott ultimately allowed four runs and three homers in 4 2/3 innings, forcing the Mets to play from behind again.

Soto helped erase the deficit in the fifth, doubling to right field before scoring on Young’s game-tying single. It was his first extra-base hit since the start of his recent slump and another example of the quality contact he produced throughout the afternoon.

His biggest swing came two innings later, when he turned on a JoJo Romero fastball and drove it out to right-center field. The seventh-inning homer gave the Mets a 5-4 lead they would hold in a sweep-avoiding win.

The rest of the offense did not suddenly solve its larger issues. Outside of the three-run first inning, the Mets generated only two more runs, both tied directly to Soto. But after such a rough stretch, the quality of his contact stood out. The Mets have struggled to produce consistently, and when Soto is not impacting games, those problems become much more noticeable.

Mendoza still saw encouraging signs in the overall lineup.

“When we’re going well, you see the conviction when we’re making swing decisions, the way the barrel’s coming through the hitting zone and right away, you saw it,” Mendoza said.

Soto’s day fit that description. He lined a double to right field in the fifth and later got the fastball he was looking for from Romero in the seventh. After the game, Soto said he was “definitely hunting the fastball” and trying to react to anything off-speed. The result was the go-ahead home run that led to the win.

The timing mattered, too. The Mets entered the day having lost the first two games of the series and are still sitting eight games under .500. One win does little to change the bigger picture, and Mendoza acknowledged that afterward.

“I mean our record, I don’t feel good about our record obviously,” Mendoza said. “But we have an opportunity here to do something, right?”

That opportunity depends on more than Soto. Thursday was a good example. Young accounted for two of the Mets’ five runs with a first-inning homer and the game-tying RBI single in the fifth. Bichette’s two-run homer gave them an early lead. After Scott allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings, the bullpen took over and was terrific. A.J. Minter, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings, preventing the game from getting away before Soto’s go-ahead homer and preserving the lead afterward.

Still, Soto remains central to any turnaround the Mets hope to make. It was enough that, after a brutal stretch, Soto affected the game in the exact ways the Mets had been missing.

The Mets had a rough night, as they got demolished by the Cardinals 7-0. Freddy Peralta struggled, allowing six runs on six hits over six innings. St. Louis did most of the damage in the third, scoring four runs in the frame. Offensively, they couldn’t get much going, finishing with just five hits on the night. Francisco Alvarez did single in his return from the injured list, while A.J. Ewing was a bright spot, going 2-for-3 with a double.

On Wednesday, the Mets will try to bounce back from their loss. The Mets announced that Austin Warren (1-2, 2.01 ERA) will start Wednesday, with Christian Scott (2-0, 2.50 ERA) on Thursday.

The Mets are set to face Cardinals righty Andre Pallante (6-4, 3.96 ERA). The game will kick off at 7:10 p.m. ET and air on SNY.

Jon Heyman talked to Carlos Mendoza in the latest edition of his show with Joel Sherman on Tuesday. “We were able to climb back in 2024…and we didn’t have a guy like Juan Soto,” Mendoza said. “Bo [Bichette] is a really good hitter. Every day he hits the ball hard…he’s going to hit. I really believe in this team. We should be playing better, and I continue to believe that.”

The Mets went on to lose 8-3 to the Mariners Tuesday night, securing a series loss. They fell to 26-35 on the season. Read more on how they lost here.

After the game, Mendoza was asked by reporters if he thinks the Mets are in too deep of a hole to climb out of.

“I don’t think so,” he said, “but we’ve got to start playing better. That’s the bottom line,” adding that the Mets need to play “consistent baseball.”

As the final of those transactions, the Mets moved Luis Robert Jr. to the 60-day injured list. He was originally placed on the IL on April 30, meaning he won’t be eligible to return until June 29 at the earliest.

However, the Mets’ offense stayed cold Tuesday as they fell 7-2 to the Reds, their fifth straight loss and seventh defeat in eight games. David Peterson struggled again, allowing six earned runs over five innings. Juan Soto produced the Mets’ only runs with a two-run homer in the sixth, continuing his hot stretch. He now has five homers over the last seven days.

Minter and Young both appeared in Tuesday’s game against the Reds, but the Mets lost anyway and have now dropped five straight. They’re 22-33, 3.5 games behind fourth-place Miami in the NL East.

Today, the Mets conclude their three-game set against the Reds, with first pitch set to be at 7:10 p.m. on SNY. The Mets wrap up their series against the Nationals tonight in the rubber game at 6:45 p.m. ET on SNY. New York will hand the ball to Zach Thornton, who is set to make his MLB debut. It was confirmed Tuesday night by MLB.com‘s Anthony DiComo that Thornton will start without an opener throwing in front of him. Washington will be going with right-hander Zack Littell, who struggled against the Mets earlier this season. He allowed eight runs (four earned) in just 3 2/3 innings.

Southpaw A.J. Minter continued his rehab assignment Tuesday with another scoreless outing for Triple-A Syracuse, retiring all three batters he faced and recording a strikeout. Across 9 2/3 rehab innings, the left-hander has posted a dominant 0.93 ERA as he works his way back from injury.

Nick Morabito was given No. 8 by the Mets. However, it is Gary Carter‘s old number, a number that has been unofficially retired since 2001. Morabito will be receiving a new number today, according to the New York Post‘s Mike Puma. Morabito said after the game that he will be picking number 55.

The Mets announced several roster moves on Wednesday, including transferring right-handed pitcher Clay Holmes to the 60-day injured list and recalling outfielder Nick Morabito from Triple-A. The team also designated outfielder Austin Slater for assignment, while left-handed pitcher Anderson Severino was selected to the major league roster before being optioned back to Triple-A after Tuesday’s game.

The game did not start the way Nolan McLean or the Citi Field crowd hoped. In the top of the first, Gage Workman launched a three-run home run to left-center, putting Detroit up 3-0. Luckily, this Mets lineup seems to thrive when challenged.

Manager Carlos Mendoza addressed this shift in mentality after the game.

“It felt like when we were going through that stretch, every time we got down a couple of runs, the game was over. That was the feeling. Now, we’re down three in the first inning, and you still feel good. It’s good to see the guys fight back,” Mendoza said.

The comeback effort was sparked by the baby Mets of the roster, specifically A.J. Ewing and Carson Benge, who have contributed a lot of energy into the clubhouse. Ewing got the Mets on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to right-center field. It was the first homer of his career.

Ewing was brief but evidently very excited about the milestone, saying, “That was awesome.”

Juan Soto was also vocal after the game about the impact the Mets’ younger players are having, noting that Ewing is part of a young core that brings the energy the team has been missing.

“He’s part of the young core, he’s a humble kid… he’s doing a great job out there,” Soto said.

The momentum continued into the fourth inning when Brett Baty tied the game with a two-run blast to left-center. By the fifth, the Mets took the lead for good. Benge singled and stole second base, earning high praise from the team’s franchise cornerstone.

Soto described Benge as, “a leader… he’s hungry to play the game, he’s showing up every day… perfect role model to be the leadoff guy.”

Soto emphasized that the depth of the farm system was a factor in his decision to sign with the Mets.

“I’m really excited… That’s one of the things that we looked at when we signed here, how great was the farm system and how much talent is down there. To get to see it live is really cool to see,” Soto said.

Mendoza agreed, noting that “the way they’re playing… their style of play is gonna provide a lot of energy.”

Soto then drove Benge home with a sharp single to center. Moments later, Mark Vientos cleared the fences with his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot that pushed the lead to 6-3.

The later innings were pretty much a victory lap for the Mets’ bigger names. Soto added to his excellent day with a solo home run in the seventh, and Marcus Semien padded the Mets’ lead with a solo shot of his own in the eighth. Detroit’s Dillon Dingler tried to get a rally going against Tobias Myers with a home run, but the result was never in doubt after the Mets took the lead for the first time. Veteran Craig Kimbrel shut the door on Detroit in the ninth, cementing the sweep.

Unfortunately, the team still ranks No. 28 in the league in runs. There are major issues to be fixed. New York is still among the five worst teams in baseball. They are 6 1/2 games out of the Wild Card race and 12 games out of the division. It seems, however, that the baby Mets have brought some life back into this team.

The Mets had a field day at the plate on Tuesday as they defeated the Tigers in the series opener by a score of 10-2. New York faced an early deficit after Freddy Peralta allowed two runs in the top of the second, but the offense slowly piled on. A.J. Ewing had a highly productive debut, going 1-for-2 with three walks. His first big league hit was a triple on a high-and-in sinker that he scorched on the ground. Overall, it was an extremely productive day for the Mets’ bats.

Today, the Mets face off against the Tigers in the second game of their series. Christian Scott (0-0, 3.27 ERA) takes the mound for New York. He’ll face veteran Framber Valdez (2-2, 4.57 ERA), who is returning from a six-game suspension. The game kicks off at 7:10 p.m. ET and will air on SNY.

As a corresponding move for Ewing’s promotion to the big leagues, the Mets have designated outfielder Andy Ibáñez for assignment, according to MLB.com‘s Anthony DiComo. Ibáñez went 0-for-6 in his only plate appearances as a Met.

Carlos Mendoza said (via DiComo) that Luis Robert Jr.‘s lumbar spine disc herniation injury is not progressing well, which should give Ewing a prolonged chance to prove himself.

MLB.com recently held a poll ranking AL and NL Rookie of the Year candidates. The Mets’ Nolan McLean topped the NL rankings with 23 out of 39 first-place votes, followed by Sal Stewart and JJ Wetherholt. In the AL, Munetaka Murakami is the current frontrunner with Kevin McGonigle ranking second.

The Diamondbacks have traded outfielder Alek Thomas to the Dodgers for 17-year-old minor leaguer Jose Requena. Thomas, now 26, was once one of the best prospects in the league but has struggled to find his footing, as he owns a career .634 OPS across nearly 1500 career plate appearances.

Per ESPN‘s Jeff Passan, MLB and the MLBPA are currently holding their first talks about the collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expires in December.

The Braves have placed catcher Sean Murphy on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left middle finger. To take Murphy’s place on the roster, Atlanta signed veteran backstop Sandy León to a major league deal.
