Good morning, Mets fans! If nothing else, Luke Weaver cares.

The Mets finished a 3-6 homestand with a 5-4 loss to the Nationals and Weaver, who gave up the go-ahead home run to CJ Abrams in the eighth inning, had a lot to say.

“I’ve been sitting here trying to think about honestly what to even say to you guys and what you’re even going to ask and trying to come up with something,” he told reporters. “And I think at the end of the day, this pursuit of perfection is an ultimate pressurized failure mindset.

“Everybody wants to be the hero because we care and we want to win really, really bad. And I just don’t think success lives in that realm. It truly doesn’t. And I think the freedom with which we play with day-to-day is kind of being suffocated a little bit. I want to just do my job, it’s that simple, there’s moments that feel really close, and then there’s just mistakes that magnify our situation.

“Of course I sit there and feel the weight of the world, and feel like I let the team down … we sit there and we just tell you guys, ‘It’ll come. This is the game. This is the law of averages.’ And all these things. But at the end of the day those words just don’t hold the same weight when you continue to (lose) day after day.

“The encouragement, the motivation to pursue just being the best person you can be and the best baseball player you can be is the only answer. Until we prove that, I understand the grievances from the outsiders.”

The Mets (10-21) have lost 17 of 20 and have the worst record in baseball. There are loads of negatives to focus on. It’s a small thing, but I like that Weaver shared his heartfelt thoughts on the season.

Christian Scott (0-0, 6.75 ERA) will make his 11th try at his first big-league victory Friday in Anaheim against rookie RHP Walbert Urena, (0-3, 4.76 ERA) who is also looking for his first MLB win. Game time is 9:38 p.m. ET and it will air on WPIX. The Mets will visit Anaheim, Colorado and Arizona on a nine-game road trip.

Interesting historical note: The Mets fired Willie Randolph during a road trip in Anaheim in 2008. Under Randolph, the 2007 Mets missed the playoffs on the last day of the regular season and the 2006 Mets lost in the NLCS.

The Mets signed RHP Jack Weisenburger to a minor-league deal and he is expected to report to Double-A, a source told reporter Francys Romero. The 28-year-old was a 20th-round pick of the Athletics in 2019. He last pitched in the Athletics organization in 2024 in Double-A. Last year he pitched to a 5.66 ERA in 103 1/3 innings in the independent Atlantic League.

A day after the Mets scored seven runs in the fourth inning, the Nationals pulled the same trick en route to a 14-2 victory Wednesday at Citi Field.

Peterson, making his first start since April 13 after being demoted to the bullpen, gave up three hard singles to his first four batters. The Nationals led 1-0 and had runners on the corners. Jacob Young hit a sharp grounder at first baseman Brett Baty, who didn’t field it cleanly, which cost him a chance to throw home. Baty settled for the out at first and the Nats led 2-0.

A Juan Soto solo home run cut the lead in half in the third inning, but Peterson (0-4) lost his control in the fourth.

He walked Young with one out. After a single and an infield single made it 3-1, he walked No. 8 hitter Nasim Nuñez, who entered the night hitting .195, on five pitches, to load the bases. He struck out Keibert Ruiz for the second out, but after getting ahead in the count 0-2, he missed four straight times to walk James Wood. That forced in a run and forced Carlos Mendoza out of the dugout.

Manaea allowed a double before escaping the inning, but not the boos from a crowd that suffered through poor pitching, sporadic rain and the Mets’ fourth loss in five games.

The Phillies (10-19) were rained out, meaning the Mets (10-20) have sole possession of the worst record in baseball.

Manaea’s final line: six earned runs on seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings. His ERA ballooned to 6.55 over 22 innings.

Nationals starter Cade Cavalli (1-1) entered the game with the widest lefty/righty splits in the majors.
The rookie is showing signs of meeting the potential that the Mets saw when they made him the 19th pick of the 2024 draft out of Oklahoma State.

Benge came up in the fourth inning Tuesday with the Mets up 3-0 over the Nationals after two runs scored on a Marcus Semien grounder that third baseman Jorbit Vivas misplayed. He jumped on Zack Littell‘s first pitch and lined the 90 mph fastball for an opposite-field single to bring in two.

He went from first to third on a Ronny Mauricio single, scored on a Bo Bichette sacrifice fly and Juan Soto homered to put the cherry on top of a seven-run inning in the 8-0 victory that snapped a three-game losing streak.

“After the Marcus ground ball, everybody took great at-bats and getting base hits,” Soto said. “It was really cool to see.”

Mendoza said lately he’s noticed a difference in the 23-year-old’s swing.

“Short, aggressive, getting the barrel to ball, using the whole field,” the manager said. “Not only pulling the baseball, but going the other way. Just hitting line drives and not missing pitches. Like on time for the fastball. And it’s just good to see it.”

Benge went 2-for-4, pulling a single to right in the sixth, for his second straight two-hit game. He is 7-for-16 in his last five with a home run, a double and one strikeout. His batting average has jumped more than 100 points since April 7 and his slash line is at .195/.258/.293/.551.

Chase Rate Percentage

With the Mets down 3-1 in the seventh inning on Sunday against the Rockies, Brett Baty waved at a 1-1 pitch well out of the strike zone. Two pitches later he struck out looking. Per Baseball Savant, the Mets are 25th in the league in chase rate percentage, a stat that measures swinging at balls out of the strike zone.

New York’s chase rate percentage is at 32.1. For reference, the Yankees lead the league at 25.8 and the Blue Jays and Rockies are tied with a league-worst 34.1. League average is 29.7.

The worst offender in the lineup regularly by far is Bo Bichette at 41.8 (his worst since 2020), but he’s not alone. Mark Vientos is at 33.8% and Luis Robert Jr. is at 32.1%. Baty is at 31.8%, up from 24.9% last season. Francisco Alvarez‘s 31% is up from 27.8% last year and the highest it’s been since his rookie year. Marcus Semien is at 29.1%, up from 23.4% a year ago. Carson Benge is at 26%. Juan Soto, one of the best at knowing the strike zone, is at 17% for his career. He’s at 24.2% this year through 13 games.

This is “pressing” quantified.

Saves

A sneaky way to avoid blowing saves is to not give yourself too many chances and the Mets are last in save opportunities with six. But how have the Mets done in save situations? They are 2-for-6, tied with the Angels (4-for-12) for the worst conversion percentage in the league. Next worst is the Nationals (6-for-16) at 37.5%, so the bullpens could provide some drama in the three-game series that starts Tuesday at Citi Field.

Of the 30 teams, 25 are at 50% or better. The Braves have converted 11 of 12 to lead MLB.

Huascar Brazobán blew a save against the Twins last week when he gave up a grand slam in the eighth inning in a game the Mets ultimately won. Devin Williams blew a one-run, ninth-inning lead against the Cubs on April 19. The Mets lost that game in the 10th.

Hitting with Runners in Scoring Position

Look, all of the hitting numbers are ugly. Overall, the Mets are slashing .226/.288/.337/.625. The Mets’ league-worst OPS is 31 points back of the next-to-last Phillies. The Dodgers lead the majors with an .821 OPS. The only Met posting a better number than that is Soto (.831).

So, you could say the Mets are “stepping it up” with runners in scoring position since they are slashing .232/.313/.336/.649, which ranks 22nd/23rd/26th/27th. But I’d call that misleading (and clever). Only the Cardinals, Blue Jays and Royals have a lower OPS with runners in scoring position.

In that 3-1 loss to the Rockies on Sunday, the Mets had the bases loaded and one out in the first inning. Semien struck out swinging and Baty was caught looking. In the eighth, they were loaded again with one out. Robert fouled out and Vientos struck out swinging.

A year ago their team OPS was .753, sixth in MLB. And with RISP, it was .803, which came in third behind the Dodgers and Blue Jays.

But Wait, There’s More

A few other bonus nuggets: The Mets have stolen 16 bases, which is tied for 21st in the league. Last season they finished fifth. Is it the Antoan Richardson Effect? The jury is out. The Braves were 26th in steals last year and are now tied for 25th.

Are you part of the problem? Attendance at Citi Field is down from an average of 39,775 last season (fifth in MLB) to 36,110 (seventh). Maybe we all need to look in the mirror. (Kidding!)

Good morning, Mets fans! Scoring runs shouldn’t be this hard.

After the Mets lost the first game of the doubleheader Sunday, Carlos Mendoza was asked if the team’s problems were fixable.

“Yes,” he told reporters. “We’ve got to do something. That’s not a good showing. We’ve got to fix it.”

The fix may come, but it didn’t happen in Game 2. The Mets lost 3-0 to the Rockies and dropped to 9-19, tied with the Phillies for the worst record in baseball. The last time the Mets were 9-19 through 28 games was in 1983, a season they finished 68-94.

After that second loss, Mendoza was asked if he was concerned about losing his job.

“The only thing I’m worried about it here is I got to get the guys going,” he told reporters. “I get it. I get it. It sucks. And I know the questions will continue to come up. But my job is to find a way to get those guys out of the funk. That’s the bottom line.”

The Mets only run of the day came on a Tyrone Taylor homer. They have scored two runs or less in half their games. They are last in the majors in runs scored and 3.28 runs per game would be the second worst in the last decade if it stood for the season, per Justin Nicosia of MLB Statcast. The worst was the 2024 Chicago White Sox at 3.13. That was the team that lost 121 games to break the 1962 Mets’ record for losses in a modern era season.

“It’s not great,” Brett Baty said after going 0-for-7 with a walk and three strikeouts over the two games. “We got to be better. We’re putting in the work. All the guys are working really hard. Personally, I’ve been taking a bunch of swings and trying to get going. At the end of the day, we just got to be better.”

Latest Mets News

Thomas Harrigan of MLB.com wrote that the Mets’ playoff hopes have dipped the most since Opening Day, according to FanGraphs. Heading into Saturday’s action, the Mets’ playoff odds were at 43.2 percent, down 37.2 percent. A better than two-in-five chance actually seems pretty good considering the 12-game losing streak.

The other biggest fallers were the Phillies (-32%), Royals (-28.1%), Red Sox (-27.7%) and Blue Jays (-16.7%). FanGraphs gives the Mets a 3% chance to win the World Series, down 5.5% from Opening Day.

The teams whose playoffs odds improved the most are the Guardians (+23.5 percent), Padres (+19.9 percent), Cubs (+19.2 percent), Rangers (+15.9 percent) and Yankees (+14.3 percent).

The Mets, despite being 9-17, still have better odds to make the postseason than the first-place Guardians. Go figure.

The rainout Saturday means the Mets will play a single-admission doubleheader vs. the Rockies Sunday starting at 1:40 p.m. ET. Nolan McLean (1-1, 2.67 ERA) faces LHP Jose Quintana (0-2, 6.23 ERA) in Game 1 and Kodai Senga (0-3, 8.83 ERA) will start Game 2, which will begin 30 to 45 minutes after the first game ends. The Rockies have not announced a Game 2 starter. Both games will air on SNY.

The rainout allowed Mets hitting coach Troy Snitker to surprise his dad, Brian, who was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame on Saturday, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com. The younger Snitker knocked on his dad’s hotel room door and the ex-Braves skipper thought it was the maid.

Monday was playing center field for the Cubs on April 25, 1976, when two men came on the field with the flag, spread it out on the outfield grass and doused it with lighter fluid. Monday ran over and took the flag away before they could set it on fire.

Edwards has struck out 13, walked 11 and pitched to a 5.29 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 17 innings at Triple-A Syracuse this year. He threw three innings apiece last year for the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers. The bulk of his 2025 pitching was at Triple-A (4.44 ERA in 50 2/3 innings) and in the Mexican Baseball League (3.38 ERA, 74 2/3 innings).

His last meaningful MLB work came in 2023 when he posted a 3.69 ERA over 31 2/3 innings for the Washington Nationals.

Scott, 26, was ineffective Thursday in his first MLB action since 2024. He walked five, got four outs and was pulled in the second inning of the Mets’ 10-8 victory over the Twins.

“I didn’t do my job, but they did their job,” Scott told reporters after the game, referring to the bullpen and the offense. “It’s why we’re here with a win today.”

The Mets start a three-game series with the Rockies Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET. Freddy Peralta (1-2, 4.05 ERA) faces RHP Michael Lorenzen (1-2, 7.48 ERA).

Luke Weaver was one strike away from ending the Mets’ 12-game losing streak when Brooks Lee reached on an infield hit to the hole at shortstop. That brought up Byron Buxton with the tying run on first.

Buxton, who hit a career-high 35 homers last season in earning his first Silver Slugger, had hit a ball 409 feet off Clay Holmes in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2. He also homered on Tuesday off of Nolan McLean.

Weaver went right after him, struck him out on five pitches, with Buxton twice swinging through 94 mph fastballs before ending the game waving at an 87 mph change-up. The 32,665 at Citi Field witnessed the first Met win since April 7 and Weaver was asked in an interview with SNY on the field if he thought about pitching around the Twins’ team leader in home runs.

“Look, people smell fear,” he said. “I’m not the biggest guy in the room, but I ain’t scared of nobody. And that’s the attitude I try to take and if I screw up it’s on me, but at the end of the day, I’m going to sleep at night. And I’m going to feel good about the effort I put in. And I ain’t fearing nobody, you remember that.”

Weaver (2-0) entered the game with the score tied 2-2 in the eighth inning with two men on and walked Ryan Jeffers to load the bases before getting Luke Keaschall to foul out to the catcher. He struck out the side in the ninth.

In the locker room, he addressed the losing streak, the longest by a Mets team in 22 years.

“I don’t want to say there was a lot of weight,” he told reporters. “We already carry a lot of weight. I think we have pushed so hard to just simply try to give everything we can and sometimes that’s just not good enough. It’s a weird way to look at it, but the harder you try a lot of times the more you fail.

“I think it’s just relaxing, understanding what you do well, staying within yourself. And at the end of the day just keep hoping and just keep doing your thing. Look, it was a sigh of relief. We have a lot more games to play. It doesn’t mean that we just now go on a 50-game winning streak, like we still gotta go do our business tomorrow and put in the right work and do all the right things. But today was a great step in the right direction. We won a hard-fought ballgame. It was going to take a game like that to get us going.”

The Mets will try to become the first team to make the playoffs after losing 12 in a row. They enter Thursday tied with the Phillies for the worst record in the National League, 8 1/2 games back of the first-place Braves and six back of the last wild card spot.

“This should just be a reminder that this game humbles you in so many ways individually and as a team,” Weaver said. “It’s not very often where you have such a talented team where everything just doesn’t really click in the right way. It’s quite an impossible feat, but we made it possible. But at the end of the day we’re going to use this as a learning point and hopefully catalyst to the future if I used that phrase right.”
