The Mets had little going on offensively in Sunday’s game, as they recorded just two hits – both singles by Young, over the course of the entire game. They did walk seven times in the game, allowing them to push across three runs in the seventh inning: there were two walks and two hit batters before a single out could be recorded in the inning. The other two runs scored on a Young single and a forceout. After a rough season with both Brooklyn and Binghamton, Palmer has surprisingly come alive with his promotion to Triple-A and now has an 11-game on-base streak.

Chacin put up a solid if lackluster pitching line over four innings on Sunday afternoon. He gave up a home run in the first inning and a RBI single in the second, but otherwise pitched to contact without giving up any more hits. Griffin struggled in almost every way, allowing 11 baserunners and needing 82 pitches to complete three innings of work. Over three appearances with Syracuse this month, he has a 10.38 ERA. Lavender continues to post enormous strikeout numbers: over 54 1/3 innings pitched this season, he has struck out 86 batters, good for a 14.25 rate per nine innings.

Double-A: Erie Seawolves (38-31) vs. Binghamton Rumble Ponies (39-27)

The first game of the Eastern League Championship series was rained out on Sunday evening. The series will begin on Monday night at 6:05 P.M in Binghamton.

The Mets jumped off to a very quick start on Sunday, scoring three runs on a two-run triple by Peroza and an RBI single by Perez. Unfortunately, they were limited to just two more runs for the remainder of the game, the latter of which coming on Perez’s solo home run in the sixth inning. After slumping massively to end his time in Binghamton (he hit .146/.180/.188 in August), Peroza has two multi-hit games in his first four Triple-A games. McIlwain has cooled off from a blazing hot August, but he still has a .351 OBP through the first half of September.

Griffin was decent in Sunday’s start against the Red Sox, limiting the damage to just two runs despite allowing six batters to reach base in just four innings of work. Clenney has allowed at least one run in all four of his September appearances. Jay has not walked anyone in six innings pitched so far this year.

The Rumble Ponies were held without a run for the first four innings of this game until they tied the game up with back-to-back RBI hits by Schwartz and Jackson. Schwartz has been particularly hot recently, hitting .349/.451/.442 so far in September. Jackson is also having a particularly strong month and has a .298/.358/.511 slash line over that time period.

Tidwell struggled in his final regular season start, throwing 30 pitches before he could get a second out in the first inning and being removed from the game due to the high single-inning pitch count. His 153 strikeouts to finish the season place him 14th in the entire minor leagues in that category. Fortunately, the bullpen was nearly perfect in almost nine innings of relief. Hardy pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings and finished the season with an excellent 1.80 ERA and 13.9 K/9 over three minor league levels. Geber tossed 18 scoreless innings and did not walk anyone after his promotion to Binghamton.

With the Rumble Ponies’ regular season ending, they will begin their Eastern League Division Series against Somerset at home on Tuesday.

With just four hits and two walks in this game, the Mets had very few offensive opportunities in Sunday’s game. In fact, they had just two at-bats with runners in scoring position and were hitless in both at-bats. Both of their runs came in the sixth inning on back-to-back homers by Mendick and Palka. Palka has been on fire since his return to the Mets organization earlier last week; he has three home runs and two doubles in just six games.

Jarvis’s struggles since joining the Mets organization at the trade deadline (and really since his promotion to Triple-A in July) continued with another extremely rough start on Sunday. Over his nine Triple-A starts, he has gone more than five innings just once and has given up three or more runs in all but one start. Lavender now has 53 strikeouts in 37 2/3 Triple-A innings.

The Rumble Ponies improved their playoff chances with their victory over the Senators on Sunday evening. With their winning streak extending to seven games and Somerset losing on Sunday, the Rumble Ponies are just one game back in the division race. After a rough start to his Mets career, Acuña has been hitting much better recently; he has multiple hits in eight of his last 14 games. He was the biggest contributor in this game with his two-run single in the third inning.

After posting a 30:4 K:BB ratio out of the Brooklyn bullpen, Garcia continued where he left off in his Double-A debut. Ramos has walked almost a batter per inning since joining Binghamton’s bullpen but has given up just three earned runs in 14 innings of work.

With this loss, the Cyclones find themselves tied for first in their division in the second half standings with one week left to play. This is a dramatic transformation from the first half of the season, which saw the Cyclones finish in last place, and likely has much to do with the additions of Williams and Clifford. Smith and Clifford got the Mets on the board in the fifth inning with two home runs, the latter being a three-run shot and the 23rd of his first full professional season. Williams’ homer in the ninth inning was his sixth since joining the Cyclones a month ago. In 30 games with the Cyclones, he has already matched his home run total from his 79 games with St. Lucie earlier in the season.

There is not much good to say about the Cyclones’ pitching performance on Sunday evening. Garcia was solid for the first three innings but then gave up three runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth. Alfonseca and Reid suffered from some poor defense behind them but gave up twice as many baserunners as innings pitched and could not strike out a single batter.

Despite going just 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position, the Mets still managed to push across seven runs in this game. Five of their runs came on non-hits (two on sacrifice flies and one each on a wild pitch, hit by pitch, and walk). In general, the Tarpons gave the Mets a lot of help, as their pitchers combined to hit six Met batters. Hernandez came just a home run shy of the cycle.

The Mets had just seven hits in Sunday’s game, but they did walk 10 times and so had numerous opportunities to score. Unfortunately, they went just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and could only push across the two runs. Despite the poor performance with runners in scoring position, the Mets did jump out in front right away, scoring the first run of the game on a McIlwain double in the bottom of the first. McIlwain has been ridiculously hot recently; he has had three straight multi-hit games and every hit in that stretch has gone for extra bases. Mauricio’s hitless game snapped an eight-game hitting streak, but he did extend his on-base streak to 20 games with the two walks.

Even without the lifeless offensive performance, this game was over almost as soon as it started, as the Cyclones gave up seven runs in the first inning and then one more run in the second. Tavarez had his longest outing since May 24, although the three walks were tied for his most since the end of April.

Morabito and Lorusso both hit balls right around 103 mph off the bat. Vargas was making his second appearance with St. Lucie and collected two more hits after a 1-for-6 performance the game prior.

Ritter got the Mets on the board right away with his two-run home run in the first inning. It was his 26th home run of the season, a total which leads the Mets minors and is also a significant increase over his previous career high of 15 home runs in a season. Baty now has a six game hitting streak and is hitting .306/.366/.611 since his return to Syracuse. McIlwain has as many walks as he does strikeouts (12) since his promotion to Syracuse.

Vasil has seen significant improvements in the month of August as he now has a 3.13 ERA with a 22:10 K:BB ratio in 23.0 innings pitched during the month of August. Reid-Foley has struck out 15 batters in 7 1/3 innings pitched so far in August, but those strikeouts have not help prevent runs, as he also has a 7.36 ERA for the month.

Binghamton’s offense struggled mightily on Sunday afternoon as they recorded just six hits and scored just a single run in the game. They actually had numerous opportunities to score, despite the lack of hits, but went hitless in eleven at bats with runners in scoring position. With six hits in his last four games, the hits have started coming a bit more for Acuña, but he still has just two extra base hits (both doubles) in the three weeks since his trade to the Mets. Gilbert extended his on-base streak to eight games with his two-walk performance.

Griffin performed well in his first start since his demotion to Binghamton, tossing five innings of one-run ball. Ramos has walked nearly a batter per inning since his promotion to Binghamton, but he has managed to allow just two earned runs in 9 2/3 innings nonetheless. Santos has performed slightly better as a reliever this season, but his 4.30 ERA out of the bullpen is still quite lackluster.

A+: Hudson Valley Renegades (63-51) 7, Brooklyn Cyclones (57-56) 1 Box Score

Williams started the Cyclones off with a bang on Sunday afternoon, homering to lead off the bottom of the first inning, but that would be the extent of their offense for the remainder of the game. They would have just three singles across the following nine innings. Williams is in the middle of an impressive power surge, homering in two straight games and recording an extra base hit in six of his last seven. He is truly showing why he is one of the top prospects in the Mets system. Ramirez is hitting just .167/.267/.227 since the start of August.

Colina had his worst outing in a while, giving up more runs than innings pitched for the first time since May 16, and has now given up seven runs across his last two starts. Tavarez has been experiencing major struggles since his demotion to Brooklyn, but this is the first game that he has not given up a run or walked a batter since then.

Vasil came one out shy of a quality start on Sunday, and though he struggled since his promotion to Triple-A, Vasil’s pitched extremely well his last couple of times out. Most notably, though, his walk rate has skyrocketed from 1.41 to 5.08 BB/9 since his promotion. Lavender has a 14.27 K/9 this season.

The Rumble Ponies had almost no offense in this game: they had three hits, walked just once, and struck out 12 times. The team had just a single at-bat with runners in scoring position following Schwartz’s double. Schwartz is having an outstanding month of August, hitting .417/.488/.611 so far this month. Acuña has struggled quite a bit since he joined the Mets organization and is just 1-for-12 in his last four games.

Hamel struggled in his start on Sunday, working around trouble throughout the game after allowing six batters to reach base before the end of the fourth inning. Hamel has had an up-and-down season but has generally looked better since the start of July, as he has an ERA of 3.38 over that span. After four scoreless outings since his promotion to Double-A, this was the first time Ramos has allowed a run with Binghamton.

Both teams were held without a run into the sixth inning, but Brooklyn broke the game open by scoring runs in each of their final three offensive innings. Williams continues to impress with his incredible on-base skills, reaching base three more times on Sunday and having almost as many walks (82) as games played (91) this season.

Ramirez is having a dismal month, hitting just .152/.235/.239 since its start, but the two walks could be a good sign of the beginnings of a turnaround. After hitting 16 home runs a year ago, this was just Santos’ sixth of the 2023 season.

After hitting just three home runs combined in his first two professional seasons, Lara has experienced a nice power surge as a 19-year-old, as this was his 12th homer of 2023.

The Mets scored nine runs on twelve hits in Sunday’s 10-inning game. McIlwain had the biggest hit of the game with his grand slam in the sixth inning. He has gotten off to a huge start to his Triple-A career with two home runs and more walks (4) than strikeouts (3) in his first five games at the level. Nido extended his hitting streak to five games. Mauricio is hitting just .217/.250/.261 to start August.

Jarvis struggled mightily in his Mets debut giving up five runs, including two home runs, in just three innings of work. He has given up four runs or more in each of his four starts since his promotion to Triple-A. Orze has not met expectations this season, but he is still striking out over a batter per inning.

The Cyclones had almost no offense on Sunday: they had just three hits in the game and Williams had two of them. They were even worse with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-7 in those situations. Williams’ .538 OBP is the third-highest in the South Atlantic League over the last week. Ramirez is hitting just .227/.320/.318 so far in August.

This was Garcia’s second consecutive start, indicating that after a dominant stretch in the bullpen, he may be given a try in the starting rotation. This start was the first time he had given up multiple runs in an appearance since April 18, but he still managed to strike out three batters without walking anyone. Beck has walked more than a batter an inning but is striking out 16.88 batters per nine innings.

The Mets struggled to get much going on offense in Sunday’s game, as they pushed across just two runs on seven hits. Cortes’ RBI double to tie the game in the sixth inning was the team’s only extra hit. This was Mauricio’s first game with three strikeouts since June 1. He has cooled off a bit in recent weeks but is still hitting a respectable .256/.322/.451 for the month.

Reyes had one of his better starts of the season, tying his season high with six innings pitched and giving up two runs or less for the first time since June 14. Clenney has given up a four runs in his 6 2/3 innings pitched since his promotion to Syracuse but has a 13:2 K:BB ratio over that span. Coonrod was making his Syracuse debut after completing a four-game rehab stint in St. Lucie.

The Rumble Ponies had a pretty good game offensively, scoring four runs on eleven hits, but they also struck out 15 times. Jordan got Binghamton on the board right away by homering with one out in the top of the first inning. With 11 home runs this season, Jordan has nearly tripled his home run total from last season (4) in thirteen fewer games. Peroza got off to a very hot start to the season but has been in a major slump for the last month: he is hitting .173/.273/.253 in July.

The Cyclones had a huge game on offense, pushing across 11 runs on 12 hits and going 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position. They took great advantage of their opportunities to score, leaving just four runners on base. Also, every hitter in the lineup had at least one hit in this game. Gil has not had a ton of hits this season, but a significant majority of his hits (27 of 44) have gone for extra bases, including his two hits on Sunday.

As was the case with Brooklyn’s offense, Brooklyn’s pitching performance was distributed across many contributors, as nine pitchers appeared in this game. Cornielly pitched two perfect innings, which is actually his first perfect outing since April 11. Beck had no control in this outing as he walked three batters and threw just 11 of his 28 pitches for strikes but still managed to get out of the inning unscathed. He now has five straight scoreless outings since the beginning of July.

Loper had a rough outing, but some of that may have been bad luck as his average exit velocity against was just 82.6 MPH.

The Mets had a big offensive game on Sunday afternoon, powered by three home runs, including three-run shots by Voit and Abraham Almonte. However, the bats came up short when it mattered most, as they went down on three consecutive strikeouts to end the game in the bottom of the 10th inning. Mauricio had his first multi-walk game in over a month and has seemingly bounced back from a rocky June. He is hitting .268/.328/.554 so far in July. Nido hit his first home run since June 15 and is now hitting .364/.400/.485 this month.

Megill continued his stretch of dreadful pitching with Syracuse as he was pulled from the game in the fourth inning having given up five runs without striking out a single batter. He has given up four or more runs in four of his five starts since his demotion to Syracuse; in that span, he has struck out just 3.4 batters per nine innings and opposing batters have a 1.009 OPS against him. Lavender has not given up a run in 10 of his last 11 outings.

With just six hits in the game, the Rumble Ponies struggled to get much going on offense. Ruiz provided most of the offense in the game, recording half of the team’s hits, driving in their first run with his second inning home run, and scoring the second run on Hayden Senger‘s sixth inning double.
Scott continued his recent stretch of excellent pitching by needing just 46 pitches to make it through four shutout innings. Except for an outlier, six run performance in early July, Scott has not given up more than three runs in a start this season. He has also cut his walk rate from 3.38 BB/9 last season to 1.5 K/9 this season without seeing a noticeable drop in strikeouts. Clenney has only given up one earned run in his last 10 appearances.

The Cyclones only had five hits in Sunday’s game but three of those hits ended up leaving the ballpark, including De Los Santos’ fourth inning grand slam, so they had no issues putting enough runs on the board to take the victory. After hitting 16 home runs a year ago, this was just De Los Santos’ fifth of the season. Consuegra’s home run was his fifth since returning from the injured list at the end of June. Ramirez’s numbers were boosted by a six-hit game earlier in the week, but he is still hitting just .235/.308/.309 this month.

Foster struggled in his start against the Renegades: he allowed three home runs before he was pulled from the game in the third inning. Prior to this start, he had never given up more than one home run in a game. Garcia struggled in St. Lucie earlier this season but has dominated since he was promoted to Brooklyn. Gervase has a 14.2 K/9 rate this season and is holding hitters to a .131/.317/.169 slash line.

The Mets were held without a run for the first five innings of Sunday’s game but then exploded on offense with a six-run sixth inning and two more runs in each of the last three innings of the game. Reimer reached base four times and flashed his impressive power with a 107.6 MPH seventh-inning home run. Williams has been extremely hot in July: he is hitting .278/.466/.500 in the month with more walks (19) than strikeouts (17) and 11 steals. Kevin Villavicencio stole four bases without being caught, giving him an even 20 steals on the season.

Atencio did not pitch wonderfully on Sunday, but this was tied for his longest start of the season and the first time he allowed three runs or less with St. Lucie since May 17. His changeup was his best pitch as usual, recording three whiffs on six swings; his fastball and curveball did not generate a single whiff on 21 swings. Coonrod has pitched three scoreless innings since starting his rehab stint.

The Mets jumped off to a quick start against former-Met Anthony Banda; they homered twice off of him and scored six runs before he was removed with two outs in the first inning. That would be all the offense they needed, but Jaylin Davis added two more runs with a home run in the third inning as well. Ritter’s home run in the first inning was his third in the last seven games. Mauricio’s hitless game snapped a five-game hitting streak, but he is still hitting .308/.333/.692 for the month of July.

Vasil had a very rocky end of May through June, giving up four runs or more in four of his six starts in that stretch, but has been significantly better over his last two starts. This was his longest start since he went seven innings on May 18. The three relievers who appeared in this game did not strike out a single batter but they also did not give up any runs.

Moreno’s dominant stretch came to a halt with his six-run outing on Sunday; he had given up two runs or less in each of his last six start’s prior to this one. Santos had his first appearance out of the bullpen this season after struggling mightily as a starter.

The Cyclones got on the board first in this game in a very unusual way: in the bottom of the first inning, Ramirez stole home as part of a double steal. Lugo then added two more runs on a home run to left field in the third inning. The last two runs scored on a Lugo single and a wild pitch in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Ramirez has struggled quite a bit since the start of July: he is hitting .179/.261/.231 for the month and has not had a multi-hit game since July 3. Lugo is heating up as he is now hitting .364/.436/.545 in July.

Suarez had one of his best starts of the season as this was his first scoreless start of the year and he also tied his season high with eight strikeouts. As poor of a season, as Suarez has had, he is still striking out 11.4 batters per nine innings. Hardy was part of a disastrous eight-run fifth inning, but much of the damage was not entirely his fault: two of the five batters he faced reached base on errors. Tavarez was likely sent down to Brooklyn to work on his control, as he has walked 13.25 batters per nine innings this year, and this outing showed just how much his control is a struggle for him. He walked more batters than he recorded outs and threw just 12 of 29 pitches for strikes.

The Mets had almost no offense in Sunday’s game: they were held to just five hits, all of which were singles except for Williams’ leadoff double in the first inning. Williams is hitting .257/.435/.400 since the start of July and he has walked more than he has struck out over that span (11:8 BB:K ratio).

Coonrod was making his first rehab appearance after missing the first half of the season with a high-grade lat strain. He threw primarily changeups and curveballs, but his velocity on each of his pitches was down between 1.3 and 2.7 MPH from last season. De La Cruz sat in the mid-90s with his fastball and had a 33% whiff rate on all of his pitches. Atencio has given up at least four runs in each of his last four appearances.
