In four at-bats, Alvarez logged two walks and a clutch double in the eighth inning that sparked a comeback rally for the desperate Mets. He also scored twice. But before he saw a pitch in his first at-bat, he was welcomed back to the bigs with a round of applause.

“It felt really special to be able to get that reception from the fans,” he said following the win. “I’m super-appreciative of all the fans here.”

Alvarez, once heralded as a cornerstone of the Mets’ future after a breakout 2023 campaign that included 25 home runs and 63 RBIs across 123 games, has seen his power production fade over the last few years.

After struggling to replicate that impact in 2024, managing just 11 homers in 100 games, the downward trend continued into this season. In 35 appearances, Alvarez hit just three home runs and posted a .652 OPS before the Mets ultimately optioned him back to the minors in hopes of resetting his swing and confidence.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Monday’s matchup, Alverez said that he “learned a lot” from his time back in Syracuse.

“I think being down in Triple-A, what helped me was I learned how to be patient,” Alvarez said, via a translator. “I continued to work hard, continued to do what I needed to do, and just put in the time to eventually get back to the big leagues.”

Throughout his 19 games in Triple-A, Alvarez batted .299 with a jaw-dropping 11 home runs in 19 games, including seven in his last six games.

Alvarez’s return couldn’t have come at a better time, for both the Mets and the young catcher looking to reclaim his place in the lineup. He ended up throwing out a base runner, too.

With his power stroke seemingly rediscovered in Syracuse and renewed patience at the plate on display, Monday’s performance served as a reminder of the talent that once made him one of baseball’s most promising prospects.

Now back in Queens with a chip on his shoulder, Alvarez has a chance to rewrite the narrative and re-anchor his role in the Mets’ future.

The team recently placed Starling Marte on the IL with a knee bruise and designated Travis Jankowski for assignment. However, Jeff McNeil has proven he can man all three outfield spots, and the newly returned Luisangel Acuña has spent time at center in his recent stint in Syracuse.

Original Post: July 10 at 1:09 pm

The injury bug just won’t let Jesse Winker go.

Two days after returning from a two-month stint on the injured list with an oblique strain, the Mets outfielder exited Thursday’s game against the Orioles with back tightness, according to Mets officials.

Winker, 31, appeared in just one at-bat before being pulled from the lineup. He popped out in the second inning and appeared to grimace after the swing. Mark Vientos pinch-hit for him during his next scheduled plate appearance.

It marked yet another setback in what has been a stop-and-start season for the veteran slugger.

Before his injury, Winker was slashing a modest .232/.313/.406 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 24 games this season.

Throughout his MLB career, the 31-year-old has played in 750 games, while posting a .261 career batting average with 96 home runs and 334 RBIs.

Winker has dealt with a string of injuries in recent seasons, making it difficult for him to build any sustained momentum.

Each time he appears to be turning a corner, another setback seems to follow. The Mets had hoped his return would provide a spark to their lineup, but instead, he suffered yet another setback.

The stop-and-start nature of his season has only added to the uncertainty surrounding his role and impact moving forward, as the All-Star break approaches.

Trade deadline buzz continues to build around the Mets, who have reportedly emerged as a team of interest in a division rival’s starting pitcher.

According to MLB reporter Francys Romero, New York is among several organizations showing interest in Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera ahead of the deadline.

Cabrera, 27, has quietly put together a strong season for Miami. Through 15 starts, he owns a 3.33 ERA with 80 strikeouts and a 1.23 WHIP across 78 1/3 innings. Known for his electric fastball, Cabrera’s four-seamer averages 96.7 mph this season.

Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

While walks have occasionally been an issue, as he has issued free passes to nine percent of the batters he has faced, Cabrera’s ability to limit hard contact and rack up strikeouts makes him an appealing mid-rotation arm.

In recent weeks, the 27-year-old has taken his game to another level. Over his last seven starts, Cabrera has posted a 1.46 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 42/16 K/BB ratio in 37 innings, while earning a win in three of those outings.

Since making his big league debut in Miami during the 2021 season, Cabrera has tossed 372 1/3 major league innings, posting a 20-25 record with a 4.11 ERA.

Cabrera is under team control through the 2028 season. Cabrera represents a potential high-upside deadline addition to the Mets’ rotation.

After being demoted to Triple-A on June 22, Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez has thrived in Syracuse and remains upbeat.

“My confidence is not low right now, but I am not going to tell you that it’s very high, too,” Alvarez said via The Athletic’s Will Sammon. “My confidence is always there. It’s a part of my game, and it’s a part of my mindset. So, for me, it is always there, but it’s not 100 percent. But we can say it is at 90 percent right now.”

Following a rough start to the season at the plate in the big leagues, slashing .236/.319/.332, the Mets elected to send Alvarez down to Triple-A to make some adjustments, where he remains over two weeks later.

Despite heading down to Syracuse, the work ethic remains the same for the catcher.

Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

“Baseball never stops,” said Alvarez. “If I stop and think about why I am down here and start to feel angry or sad or frustrated, I’m losing time. And I don’t have that much time to lose. I don’t have time to think about all of that. I just have to keep working, keep doing my thing, and that’s it.”

Since his demotion, Alvarez has reestablished himself at the plate, batting .256/.326/.590 while blasting four home runs in 11 games.

“The day he got here, he was ready to work and committed to being better,” said Syracuse bench coach and Alvarez confidant J.P. Arencibia, who described his attitude as “unbelievable,” per Mike Puma of The New York Post.

Initially earning his shot in the big leagues during the 2023 season, primarily due to his offensive firepower, the Venezuela native has been experimenting with batting stances in Syracuse that he used during the 2023 season.

“I’ve been working on putting both together,” said Alvarez. “I feel more powerful.”

Defensively, Alvarez, once considered one of the game’s premier pitch framers, took a clear step back in 2024 at the big league level, ranking fourth worst in strike rate on borderline pitches among 57 qualified catchers before his demotion and subsequent adjustments.

Despite his struggles as a framer to open the season in the MLB, Arencibia, Syracuse’s bench coach, believes his framing has been refined throughout his two-plus weeks in Triple-A.

“He’s in the 100th percentile in Triple-A [in framing] in the 10 [games] that he’s been here,” said Arencibia.

With his swing potentially rediscovered and his framing refined, Alvarez is positioning himself to return and contribute at a high level in the big leagues. If Alvarez says in the minors through Saturday, he will not become a free agent until after the 2029 season, a year later than anticipated.
