McDaniel also states that the Mets would then sign a free agent pitcher to fill Syndergaard’s hole in the rotation, and that Jacob deGrom is off limits in trade talks.
Rumors have been swirling for weeks around Syndergaard being available with teams starting to line up for his services. The San Diego Padres have shown interest in the right-handed starter back to the July trade deadline. The Reds, Rockies and Brewers have all been named as teams that would like to acquire the Texan.
Recent reports have made it clear that the Mets are not simply looking for prospects in return for the 26-year-old Syndergaard. Instead, they would prefer multiple MLB ready players that can help fill immediate holes.
Syndergaard, coming off 2018 season with 3.03 ERA, 2.80 FIP and 4.0 bWAR, is arbitration eligible this offseason and is under team control through the 2021 season.
