Luis Severino RHP

The Mets send out Jacob deGrom and I don’t know how Yankee fans should react. Scared because he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball right now? Or content because the Mets rarely score for him? The Mets bucked that trend in deGrom’s last outing scoring eight runs.

On the season he is 6-7 over 23 games and 152.1 innings with a 1.77 ERA (league leading), 2.20 FIP (league leading), 0.965 WHIP and 212 ERA+ (league leading). Since the start of July deGrom has posted a 1.60 ERA in 45.0 innings and has posted a 1.29 ERA in 14.0 innings in August. On June 8th he allowed three runs, two earned over eight innings against the Yankees, in a game the Yankees won 4-1. The Yankees have the following numbers against deGrom:

  • Stanton 9-for-25, 2B, 4 HR, 3 BB, 7 K
  • Gardner 4-for-14, HR, 2 BB
  • Gregorius 2-for-12, 2 K
  • Hicks 2-for-8, 2 K
  • Judge 1-for-5, 2B, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Sanchez 2-for-6, 3 K
  • Walker 2-for-6, BB
  • Andujar 0-for-4
  • Bird 0-for-3, 2 K
  • Torres 2-for-4
  • Torreyes 2-for-3, 2B

Luis Severino takes the mound for the Yankees and he is 15-5 (league leading in wins) over 24 games and 150.1 innings with a 3.11 ERA, 3.02 FIP, 1.104 WHIP and 140 ERA+. The last time the Mets and Yankees met up, this would have been a marquee match up. It still is but under a cloud.

Severino has been struggling as of late. Since July 7th over six games and 32.0 innings he has posted a 7.31 ERA. It’s an 8.28 ERA over five games and 25.0 innings if you forget about his last start on August 8th where he allowed only two runs over seven innings. He held the Mets to two runs over five innings back on June 10th. The Mets have the following numbers against Luis:

  • Bautista 2-for-13, HR, 3 BB, 7 K
  • Frazier 3-for-6, HR, 2 BB
  • Conforto 0-for-6, BB, 2 K
  • Jackson 0-for-3, 2 BB
  • Mesoraco 1-for-5
  • Rosario 0-for-5, 2 K
  • Nimmo 2-for-3, BB
  • Flores 0-for-2, 2 K
  • Reyes 1-for-1

Jacob DeGrom has allowed one run or less in 13 starts, tied with Aaron Nola for the most in the NL. Overall, deGrom has allowed one run or fewer in 59 of his 130 career starts (45.3%), the most by a major league pitcher through his first 130 career starts since 1908.

The Mets bullpen has posted a 1.56 ERA (seven earned runs/34.2 innings) in August, the third-lowest mark this month in the majors. Mets relievers have issued six walks and struck out 24 batters this month.

Michael Conforto has reached base safely in 26 straight road games dating to June 12. It’s the longest road on-base streak by a Met since Curtis Granderson reached base safely in 37 straight road games from August 8, 2015-May 6, 2016.
