Last night was a weird one for the Mets. The game started and it almost immediately started to pour but not before Jason Vargas could get himself into trouble and by the time his line was closed after the delay three of his runners scored. The Mets offense was cold and the only bright spots for the Mets happened in the bullpen with Bashlor having 2 innings of no run baseball and Drew Smith doing the same. Also, Nimmo went 2-for-3 with a walk.

But it’s deGrom day. An early deGrom day. Jacob is 5-7 over 22 games and 146.1 innings with a 1.85 ERA (league leading), 2.28 FIP (league leading), 0.970 WHIP and a 204 ERA+ league-leading) He’s coming off a start against Atlanta where he had to do it all, holding the Braves to two runs in eight innings and pushing the Mets only run of the game across the plate. Last year against the Reds he allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings and then two runs over six innings while striking out 10. The Reds have the following numbers against him:

The Mets will get to look at the 2018 debut of Robert Stephenson. Last year went 5-6 over 25 games and 11 starts logging 84.1 innings with a 4.68 ERA, 4.92 FIP, 1.583 WHIP and 94 ERA+. He has put up his best season in the minors this year though, posting a 2.87 ERA across 113.0 innings in 20 starts. Against the Mets last year he allowed two runs over six innings off five hits and three walks. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Game Notes

Jacob deGrom leads the majors with a 1.85 ERA, is third in the NL and seventh in the majors with 173 strikeouts, fifth in the majors in WHIP (0.97) and is third in the majors with a .301 slugging percentage.

DeGrom has the second-lowest home ERA (2.21) since 2014 behind Clayton Kershaw (1.93). In addition, he owns the lowest home ERA in franchise history (min 200 IP).

Austin Jackson has gone 11-27 (.407) with two homers and five RBI since joining the Mets on July 27 with a .467 OBP and a .630 slugging percentage (10 games).

The Mets are 20-6 in their last 26 games vs. Cincinnati dating to September 7, 2014. New York has outscored the Reds, 129-93 during that span. New York has won 10 of its last 12 home games vs. Cincinnati, including a franchise-record nine straight, June 26, 2015-September 9, 2017.

Last night was the 25th time this year, the Mets have been held to one run or less, tied for the second-most in the majors. The Orioles are first scoring one run or less 28 times.
