According to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News, scouts from eight teams including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cincinnati Red and Chicago Cubs were on hand Monday to watch New York Mets starter Zack Wheeler.
Ackert notes that the D’Backs came away from the outing interested in the righty and that the Reds plkan to return for his next scheduled start in Saturday.
It was reported on Thursday that the New York Yankees have also shown interest in Wheeler as they look to improve their rotation.
Wheeler, 28, is 2-6 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 99.2 innings this season. He does have a 3.71 FIP for the season and a 0.9 HR/9 rate that ranks 17th among 83 qualified starters.
The right-hander has been better of late with a 3.44 ERA and 3.39 FIP over his last eight starts and has also seen a velocity boost on his fastball.
Wheeler will be a free agent after the 2019 season.
