Morning Briefing: No Love In The Familia

Good morning, folks! The Mets will go for the series win tonight with Jacob deGrom toeing the rubber against Masahiro Tanaka. The game will be on ESPN at 8:08 p.m.

Yesterday, the Mets made it interesting late by scoring three runs off Aroldis Chapman but ultimately they fell short. The news was mostly what happened off the field.

Where to begin on this one…

Okay, Cespedes first. Yoenis Cespedes (who returned from the DL on Friday) sat out from yesterday’s contest and will get an MRI this coming week and will see a foot specialist. Mickey Callaway was kept in the dark on this as he was not aware of Cespedes’ foot problem that he brought up with reporters on Friday night. This whole thing is a mess. To top it all off, none of the GM’s will talk to the media on it. Oy Vey!

Next up. Jeurys Familia was dealt to the Oakland Athletics for IFA money, Bobby Wahl, and Will Toffey. The return is underwhelming when considering Familia was the best rental reliever still left.

Wahl throws the ball really hard and generates a ton of swings and misses. He really should be up soon or whenever these guys sort out their 40-man roster. He might be an actual MLB reliever and leads the PCL relievers in K%, WHIP, and swinging strike percent. He’s also second in FIP. Chris Crawford of Rotoworld¬†believes he can be a high-leverage reliever.

Toffey is a really good defender who has decent plate control. Perhaps he could grow into more power down the line, but right now he’s going to be biding his time in Binghamton.

The IFA money is worth $1 million. Craig Mish or Sirius XM speculates the Mets could be in on Victor Victor Mesa. He is the crown jewel of this IFA class. If the Mets want to get more athletic and get position players, then here is their guy. It will take more but they can muster up the money to go after him. Do it, folks.

The trade was certainly a letdown because more was expected. Keith Law of ESPN tears the Mets a new one.

The Mariners have interest in Asdrubal Cabrera per Matt Ehalt. They have some bonus money too.
