Morning Briefing: Mets Look to Extend Winning Streak

Good morning Mets fans! The New York Mets (43-57) defeated the red-hot Pittsburgh Pirates (53-51) last night by a score of 12-6. While Steven Matz (5-8, 3.79 ERA) gave up four runs and two homers, he matched a career high in strikeouts with nine. Nine Mets also got hits in the game and they combined for 14 hits and nine walks overall.

Jason Vargas (2-6, 8.60 ERA) comes off the disabled list today and will take the mound against Ivan Nova (6-6, 4.28 ERA) and the Pirates at 7:05 p.m. EDT. The game can be viewed on SNY and heard on 710 WOR.

To make room for Vargas on the 25-man roster, the Mets optioned Corey Oswalt to Triple-A Las Vegas, per Mike Puma of the New York Post.
