Kevin Plawecki to Play First Base On Saturday

New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway announced before the game on Friday against the Chicago Cubs that Kevin Plawecki will start at first base on Saturday.

Plawecki will play first in an effort to help the Mets offense against left-handed pitching, they face lefties on Saturday (Mike Montgomery) and Sunday (Jon Lester).

Callaway mentioned Plawecki playing first as a reason for them adding catcher Jose Lobaton to the active roster.

The right-handed hitting Plawecki was taking groundball at first base before the game today. He played two games at first last season, 27 games in pro career and also played some there in college at Purdue.

Plawecki is hitting .222/.432/.259 this season in 39 plate appearances and actually has better MLB career splits against righties (.634 OPS) than (.567 OPS) vs lefties.

As a team, the Mets have a major league worst .604 OPS against left-handed pitching in 2018. Adrian Gonzalez is just 3-for-14 with five strikeouts against lefties this year.
