Morning Briefing: Mets Must Stop the Bleeding

Good morning Mets fans! The New York Mets (17-12) were swept by the Atlanta Braves (19-11) on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field with an 11-0 shutout loss. The offense was no-hit and held to one walk for 6 2/3 innings before collecting three hits and two walks the rest of the way. Jason Vargas (0-2, 16.20 ERA) imploded again as he gave up six runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The Mets host the Colorado Rockies (17-15) for a three-game set beginning at 7:10 p.m. tonight. Zack Wheeler (2-1, 4.09 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Mets and he will be opposed by German Marquez (1-3, 5.14 ERA).

Wheeler attended his brother Jacob’s art opening in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan last night after the game according to Christian Red of the NY Daily News. Jacob had to give up baseball and basketball after high school due to a heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia that he has suffered from since he was eight years old.

John Harper of the NY Daily News wrote that the Mets need to part ways with Matt Harvey now. Harvey had another poor bullpen appearance on Thursday as he gave up five runs in two innings. The former All-Star has given up seven hits, five walks and seven runs in six innings since being converted to a reliever.
