Mets Minors Recap: Flexen, Peterson With Impressive Outings

Las Vegas (16-23) 2, Albuquerque (19-20) 1   Box Score

Evans made the difference in this one, hitting two solo homers to account for the 51s’ only two runs. After a slow start to the season, Evans’s bat has been coming on lately with five home runs in his last six games. Outside of him, the 51s couldn’t muster anything together, but it proved to be enough for the win.

  • RHP Chris Flexen (W, 3-3, 3.40 ERA): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
  • LHP Matt Purke (1-0, 7.47 ERA): 1.0 IP, 2 H, R, 0 BB, 0 K
  • RHP Drew Smith (3-0, 4.32 ERA): 1.0 IP, H, 0 R, BB, K

Flexen had a great start, allowing only two hits in seven scoreless innings. This brought his ERA down to 3.40, which is very, very good for a contact pitcher pitching in the PCL. If he can keep producing consistent quality starts like he’s been doing, he could pitch himself back into contention for an MLB rotation spot. Purke continued his season-long struggles by giving up a run, but Smith worked a solid inning to close out the low-scoring affair.

Binghamton 6 (18-17), Erie 5 (14-22) Box Score

In six starts this year between Binghamton and Las Vegas prior to this one, Mickey Jannis’ combined ERA was approaching 8.00. Things did not go much more smoothly for the knuckleballer as he allowed five runs on nine hits in his five innings. Lefty Daniel Zamora, from this spring’s Josh Smoker trade, relieved Jannis and began a string of four scoreless relief innings to end the game. Zamora recorded five outs, all via the strikeout. The duo of Joshua Torres and Tyler Bashlor proved once again to be a winning formula for Luis Rojas, as they shut the door on Erie for the victory.

The Rumble Ponies had to work from behind throughout the early going of this one, as Erie had already mounted a four-nothing lead before Binghamton could come to bat in the third. In that third, they began to mount their comeback. Jeff McNeil doubled home John Mora, and Peter Alonso scored McNeil after reaching on an error, cutting the Seawolves lead in half.

Down three in the sixth, Tim Tebow punished an offering from reliever Jeff Thompson with two men on base. The three-run homer was Tebow’s fourth and it tied the game at five. Tebow now has a 1.002 OPS in the month of may.

Binghamton would go ahead in the seventh thanks to a Kevin Taylor single that scored Alonso, and would not look back.

St. Lucie Mets were rained out and scheduled to play a doubleheader today.

Delmarva 1 (25-12), Columbia 0 (19-18) Box Score

  • LHP David Peterson (L, 1-1, 2.05 ERA): 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Darwin Ramos (0-0, 4.66 ERA): 1 IP, 1 K
  • RHP Stephen Villines (1-3, 3.85 ERA): 1 IP, 3 K

David Peterson was strong one again for Columbia in this one. It was the left-hander’s second consecutive seven-inning outing. He allowed just two hits and threw just 94 pitches in his seven full innings. Delmarva scored their lone run off Peterson in the first inning, as Kirvin Moesquit led off with a walk, stole second, and reached third and home on consecutive groundouts. That run stood up as the game’s only tally for either side. Righties Darwin Ramos and Stephen Villines each threw hitless innings in relief of Peterson. Villines struck out the side in order in the ninth inning.

Seeing as both teams only mustered two hits per side, there was not much going on for the Columbia offense. The lone Firefly hits were singles by Jeremy Vasquez and catcher Ali Sanchez. No Firefly reached scoring position throughout the entire night. The Delmarva combination of Michael Baumann and Zach Muckenhirn held the Columbia attack in check, as they combined to strike out 11 Fireflies and failed to walk a single batter.
