It seems like weeks since we’ve heard anything on Dominic Smith and his strained quad, well today he hit in a minor league intrasquad as a designated hitter.
The 23-year-old Smith missed almost the entire Major League spring training going 1 for 1 in the only game he got into. Of course that game was the one he was supposed to start but was pulled from the lineup because he was late for a team meeting.
Smith entered camp in fantastic shape as he looked to battle veteran Adrian Gonzalez for the first base job. The injury eliminated any chance he had and Gonzalez reached base four times on Opening Day for the Mets on Thursday.
The left-hand hitting Smith was officially placed on the 10-day disabled list by the Mets before the game on Thursday. When ready to go he should head back to the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s.
Smith hit .330/.386/.519 with a career-high 34 doubles and 16 home runs last season for the 51s. He then hit just .198/.262/.395 with six doubles and nine home runs in his short major league stint for the Mets in 2017.
