Morning Briefing: Mets Outbid Giants for Bruce

Good morning Mets fans!

While money still seems tight to an extent, the Mets appear to be in a better spot financially than was thought a few weeks ago. After signing Jay Bruce, the team is operating with a belief that they don’t need to shed AJ Ramos‘ or Juan Lagares‘ contracts to add more players as was previously perceived.

Not only did the Mets end up getting Bruce on a reasonable deal, but they also ended up outbidding the San Francisco Giants by about $10 million according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports.

The Mets didn’t completely change their tune in terms of finances, however. The team came close to a deal for Jason Kipnis, but it was killed by someone at the top of the organization likely over money according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Mets C/1B prospect Patrick Mazeika received an invitation to major league camp.

Matt Ehalt of North Jersey notes that T.J. Rivera will be honored at the Thurman Munson Awards in February.
