Good Chance Rene Rivera Catches Syndergaard Opening Day

The Houston Astros stole four bases on four attempts against the combination of New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard and catcher Travis d’Arnaud.

After the game Terry Collins had this to say about the possibility of Rene Rivera catching Syndergaard on Opening Day: “There’s a good chance, certainly a possibility.”

The Mets open the season against the Atlanta Braves on April 3 with their ace Syndergaard on the mound and it sounds like Collins is seriously considering starting the veteran Rivera.

Rivera caught 23 of Syndergaard’s 30 starts last year, while d’Arnaud caught only four. Rivera threw out 30% of would-be base stealers last season compared to only 22% for d’Arnaud.

Syndergaard allowed a major league worst 48 stolen bases last season.
