Game Preview

The Mets look to take the rubber game from the Nationals today building off yesterday’s 5-2 win. Juan Lagares finally made it into the lineup yesterday and promptly hit a homer, drove in three, collected multiple hits, and robbed a homer from Jayson Werth with an amazing leap over the wall. His performance added more fuel to #FreeLagares and #StartLagares, one of the few things that unites #MetsTwitter.

Zack Wheeler looks to rebound from his rough night in the Bronx as he squares off against Jordan Zimmermann. The Mets righthander is 1-3 over eight games this season with a 4.53 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched.

Wheeler got off to a rough start in May, allowing seven runs (four earned) over 4.0 innings against the Rockies. He then pitched well against the Marlins allowing just two hits over 6.0 innings while striking out seven batters. However, he regressed his last time out when he allowed five earned runs and walked a career high six batters over 4.1 innings against the Yankees.

Wheeler is tied for sixth in the majors in walks allowed (24) and is third in walks per nine (4.95) and has 11 walks over his last two starts. In his first start of the season, Wheeler struck out six while allowing three earned runs over 6.0 innings against these same Nationals who have the following numbers Wheeler:

  • Span 6-12, 2B
  • Werth 3-10, 2B, HR
  • Desmond 3-11, 2B
  • Rendon 2-7
  • Ramos 0-6

Zimmermann is 2-1 over eight starts and in 42.2 innings has a respectable 3.59 ERA. He is coming off of his second worst start of the season where he allowed 10 hits and 5 ER over 5.2 innings. His season debut was against the Mets where he allowed one earned run over 5.0 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against him:

  • Murphy 12-38, 4 2B, 3 HR
  • Wright 9-34, 2 2B, 2 HR
  • Duda 3-18, 2B
  • Tejada 5-15
  • E Young 3-9, 2B
  • Lagares 3-9, 2B

Game Notes

The Mets will open a nine-game homestand starting on Tuesday. The Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Pirates each make their only trip to Citi Field.

The Mets scored three times in the first-inning yesterday and lead the majors with 36 first-inning runs. Colorado and Oakland are tied for second with 34. The Mets have scored in the first inning in 10 of their last 15 games.

Since the start of the 2012, Daniel Murphy has 406 hits, the second-most in the National League, behind Andrew McCutchen’s 424. Murphy also ranks second with 90 doubles in the NL over that period, Paul Goldschmidt is first with 97.

Juan Lagares has at least one hit in his last five starts (6-22, .273) and has five RBI in his last three. On Saturday, he became the first player in the majors this year to hit a home run and rob a home run in the same game.
