McLean’s first pitch of the night was drilled up the middle for a single by Ronald Acuña Jr., but the threat was quelled swiftly as the righty induced a double play from Maikel Garcia and a flyout from Luis Arráez. McLean got his first two strikeouts of the night in the second inning, getting Eugenio Suárez on a sweeper and freezing Gleyber Torres on a curveball. After a single by Ezequiel Tovar, McLean retired Wilyer Abreu on a pop out to end the inning.

McLean ran into trouble in the third inning, giving up a single to Salvador Perez and walking Acuña. After a wild pitch evaded Will Smith, Garcia drove home the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly. McLean was able to limit the damage by getting Arráez to ground out to second base.

McLean rebounded with a 1-2-3 fourth inning, which included his fourth strikeout of the night, locking up Torres on a down-and-away sinker. Abreu punished one of the few mistake pitches from McLean to start the fifth inning, clubbing a home run over the center field fence to extend Venezuela’s lead. McLean induced a flyout from Perez and a pop out from Jackson Chourio before being relieved by Brad Keller. McLean threw 63 pitches on the night, 44 of which were strikes.

As he displayed in Grapefruit League play, McLean’s velocity was up across the board on Tuesday compared to his 2025 marks. His sinker averaged 96.8 mph (94.8 in 2025), his four-seamer averaged 98.1 mph (95.8 in 2025), his sweeper averaged 86.7 mph (85.3 in 2025) and his curveball averaged 82.4 mph (80 in 2025). The fastest pitch McLean threw in 2025 was 98.4 mph, and he exceeded that mark seven times on Tuesday, topping out at 99.2 mph. McLean most frequently threw his sweeper in the game, generating six whiffs on 17 swings. He also did a good job at limiting hard contact, allowing an average exit velocity of just 83.2 mph. While his effort was all for naught, McLean did what he could to keep Team USA in the game.

“Whenever you go down 2-0 it’s tough, but I thought Mac threw the ball great,” Bryce Harper said after the game. “He’s a special talent. He’s going to be a special talent for a long time.”

McLean has 10 days before his projected first regular-season start of the year, which will come on March 28 against the Pirates. While his tournament run wasn’t perfect, he got to experience pitching in a playoff atmosphere and generated some positive results.

Venezuela struck first in the top of the third. After McLean gave up a single to Salvador Perez and a walk to Ronald Acuna Jr., a wild pitch allowed the runners to advance into scoring position. McLean started the fifth for the United States and gave up a lead-off home run to Wilyer Abreu that extended Venezuela’s lead to 2-0 over the Americans.

His day ended at 4 2/3 innings as Brad Keller came on in relief. McLean finished the day with two earned runs on four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Though he gave up a couple of runs, per Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online, the right-handed Mets prospect from North Carolina threw some of the fastest pitches of his career: 98.3 mph, 98.6 mph, 98.7 mph, 99.0 mph, and 99.2 mph. The fastest he threw in 2025 with the Mets was 98.4. McLean was fired up on Tuesday, and it showed in his pitch velocity.

On the other side of the mound, Eduardo Rodriguez shut down the United States. He threw 4 1/3, giving up just one hit, one walk, and striking out four to allow Venezuela to dominate the game.

Keller, Will Vest, and Griffin Jax kept the Venezuelan bats at bay and gave the United States a chance in the game through eight innings. After the bats were near silent through seven, the U.S. came back to tie in the bottom of the eighth.

After Bobby Witt Jr. walked, Bryce Harper came up and hit a long two-run home run to center field to tie the game 2-2, keeping the Americans’ hopes alive.

But then in the top of the ninth, Garrett Whitlock gave up his first run of the tournament to allow Venezuela to re-take the lead. After he walked Luis Arraez, Javier Sanoja replaced him on the base pads as a pinch runner and proceeded to steal second before Eugenio Suarez doubled to center field to score Sanoja and give Venezuela a 3-2 lead to immediately put the United States back behind.

The United States once again went flat in the bottom of the ninth and Venezuela went on to defeat the USA 3-2 and are the 2026 World Baseball Classic champions.

Tuesday’s victory marks the first time Venezuela has ever won the World Baseball Classic. This was the first year they made it into the finals and they came in and took advantage and now own the title of world champions for 2026.

On Friday night, Team USA defeated Team Canada 5-3 in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals. Brice Turang and Pete Crow-Armstrong provided support at the bottom of the lineup, each recording two hits and an RBI. Team USA will face the formidable Team Dominican Republic on Sunday at 8 p.m. with a spot in the WBC championship game on the line.

World Baseball Classic Results

Team Dominican Republic defeated Team Korea 10-0 by mercy rule in Friday night’s other quarterfinal matchup. Cristopher Sánchez tossed five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts while Juan Soto went 1-for-4 while also scoring a run with the help of a highlight-reel swim move.

The Mets played two split-squad spring training games on Friday. At home, the Mets lost to the Marlins 1-0. Kodai Senga provided three perfect innings with five strikeouts out of the gate, while Clay Holmes pitched five innings of one-run ball in relief. Devin Williams also pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

On the road, the Mets defeated the Nationals 8-3. Carson Benge had an RBI single, continuing his hot spring, while Carl Edwards Jr. threw four scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

The Mets signed outfielder JT Benson out of independent ball. Benson had an .889 OPS with 24 stolen bases in 80 Frontier League games this past season.

Now, the United States have new life in the tournament and are set to face off against Canada in the quarterfinals at Daikin Park in Houston. Elsewhere, the electric Team Dominican Republic will take on Team Korea from loanDepot Park in Miami.

Dominican Republic vs. Korea (6:30 p.m. EST, FS2)

After allowing three runs against Team Nicaragua last week, Cristopher Sanchez is back on the bump for the Dominican Republic. The Philadelphia Phillies ace will look to bounce back against a Team Korea lineup that features the likes of Jahmai Jones, Jung Hoo Lee, Bo Gyeong Moon and Hyeseong Kim.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays left-handed starter Hyun Jin Ryu will toe the rubber for Korea after giving up one earned run across three innings against Chinese Taipei in pool play.

Ryu has his work cut out for him, though, against a potent lineup that scored 41 runs in pool play thanks to the star power of Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr., Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ketel Marte, Julio Rodriguez and Manny Machado, among others.

The winners of this contest would move on to play the victor of the USA vs. Canada matchup on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. EST in Miami.

USA vs. Canada (8:00 p.m. EST, FOX)

The U.S. will call on San Francisco Giants All-Star right-hander Logan Webb in an attempt to shut down Canada’s lineup. Webb allowed one run on one hit with six strikeouts against Brazil in the opener of pool play.

Canada, meanwhile, will send Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Michael Soroka out for the start. He gave up one earned run over three innings in a victory over Colombia last week.

Team USA is looking to make it back to the semifinals of the WBC for a third-straight time, while Canada has never made it that far in the tournament throughout its 20-year history up to this point.

Friday’s games

Korea vs. Dominican Republic at loanDepot park in Miami, 6:30 p.m. ET on FS2

Korea is the only team in the quarterfinals that lost twice, and it advanced by winning a three-way tiebreaker with Australia and Chinese Taipei. (Something seemed wrong to me at first about the runs allowed/outs recorded tiebreaker, but after some thought I like it.)

Korea is trying to make it to the semifinals for the first time since 2009, when it lost to Japan in the finals. It is facing a deep Dominican Republic team, looking for its second WBC title (2013, Robinson Canó was MVP).

Juan Soto is 5-for-15 with two home runs, four RBIs, five walks and a stolen base. He is one of five players on the team with two home runs (Junior Caminero, Oneil Cruz, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.). The DR outscored its opponents 41-10 while going 4-0 in pool play. Huascar Brazobán has thrown 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless ball. He’s struck out four (including Nicaragua’s Mark Vientos) and walked one.

USA vs. Canada at Daikin Park in Houston, 8 p.m. ET on FOX

Team USA survived a scare, and now Nolan McLean (a shaky outing vs. Italy) might get to pitch again. McLean, before the tournament, was named the starter should the Americans make it to the final. Clay Holmes (three scoreless innings, six strikeouts vs. Great Britain) is returning to the Mets.  Pete Crow-Armstrong and Aaron Judge have hit two homers apiece.

The United States is trying to win its second WBC (2017, Marcus Stroman was MVP) and it will have to go through Canada and Marlins outfielder Owen Caissie (7-for-14, a home run, a 1.458 OPS). Jared Young is 1-for-5 with two strikeouts for Team Canada.

Saturday’s games

Puerto Rico vs. Italy at Daikin Park in Houston, 3 p.m. ET on FS1

Puerto Rico lost in this round in 2023 and in the finals in 2017 and 2013. In 2023, Edwin Díaz suffered a torn patellar tendon while celebrating a win over the Dominican Republic. He is back and has thrown two scoreless innings with five strikeouts and a save. Italy pulled off the upset of the tournament so far with its win over the United States. Vinnie Pasquantino became the first player to hit three homers in a WBC game against Mexico.

Mets prospect Nick Morabito, seeing action as a defensive replacement in the Team Italy outfield, is 0-for-1.

Venezuela vs. Japan at loanDepot park in Miami, 9 p.m. ET on FOX

Shohei Ohtani is 5-for-9 with two homers, a double and four walks for defending champion Japan, and Seiya Suzuki has a couple of homers as well. Japan has won three of the five Classics and advanced to the semifinals every time. This will be its first time playing Venezuela, which had its best showing when it advanced to the semifinals in 2009.

Ronald Acuña Jr. is 4-for-13 with a home run, a double, six walks, a tournament-leading eight runs scored and two stolen bases. Luis Arraez has two home runs and nine RBIs. RHP Carlos Guzman (3.12 ERA in 49 innings combined at Triple-A Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton in 2025), got into one game, recorded two outs and gave up a hit and a walk.

The winners of Friday’s games will play Sunday in Miami, and the winners of Saturday’s games will play there on Monday. The championship game is Tuesday in Miami at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

Predictions

Anything can happen in one baseball game. But I don’t like the vibes from Team USA. I think it survives Canada and loses to the immaculately-vibing DR in the semifinals. I’ll take Italy to keep its magic going, Venezuela in an upset over Japan and DR over Venezuela in the finals. Soto will edge Brazobán for MVP honors.

He started the first inning by pitching exactly how many expected: striking out the side on 11 pitches.

However, the second inning was a tale of two innings. Things unraveled for McLean in inning number two after getting the first two batters to ground out. The Mets’ 24-year-old pitcher surrendered a solo home run to Kyle Teel, then proceeded to hit Jac Caglianone. The blow of the inning came when Sam Antonacci took McLean deep to make it a 3-0 Italy lead.

McLean fared better in the third, escaping the inning without allowing another run. New York’s top prospect ended his night after throwing 55 pitches (34 strikes) across three innings. He allowed three earned runs on two hits, walked two and struck out four.

Over the course of his night, McLean got six whiffs and had a 29 percent called strikes plus whiffs percentage. According to Pitcher List Stats, he threw his breaking ball most, throwing 17 curveballs and 15 sweepers, which proved to be his strongest pitches on Tuesday night. Pre-Game

The experience, however, started off poorly. There is a list of 17 instruments that are allowed at the WBC and it includes bongos, tambourines, trumpets and trombones. There is also a list of banned instruments. Leave your bullhorns, kazoos and vuvuzelas at home.

A cowbell is permitted, and my friend Pat brought two. (I’m at the game with Pat and Mike, friends I made on my first day at SUNY Buffalo, which was the same year Bobby Bonilla debuted with the Mets.) Pat is from Ecuador and was torn about who to root for, so he had a blue cowbell to support the Dominican Republic and a yellow one to shake for Nicaragua. (What a joy it was going to be to sit next to him.)

But security at loanDepot park in Miami told Pat he couldn’t enter with the cowbells even though they were on the approved list. He pointed this out. This is when we learned that there are different types of cowbells. Cowbells that come with a stick are welcome. The ones with a little bell on the inside are not.

We enter, and the crowd of 35,127, in my estimation, is 70-30 for the DR. In introductions, Juan Soto received the second-biggest ovation. The loudest was for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Maybe he’s more popular or maybe he’s got a few more fans because us older folks have warm memories of watching his dad.)

The Games

I love a good first-round upset in March Madness and the DR vs. Nicaragua felt like, well, Duke vs. SUNY Buffalo. The DR has Soto, Guerrero Jr., Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Ketel Marte and batting sixth is Junior Caminero, who hit 45 home runs for Tampa Bay last year. Nicaragua has Mark Vientos and manager Dusty Baker.

The crowd is into it from the first pitch. Nicaragua already has a run in the top of the first when cleanup hitter Vientos (I wasn’t kidding, he’s the star) comes to bat with two on and nobody out. The WBC-approved cowbells are clanging. (Pat is jealous.)

Cristopher Sanchez treats Vientos like he’s prime Barry Bonds. He walks him on four pitches that weren’t close to load the bases. The Nicaraguans are loud. But Sanchez strikes out the next three batters to escape the jam, screams and fist pumps coming off the mound. It is the Dominican fans’ turn to use instruments. This is fun.

Vientos’ next at-bat comes an inning later, with two on and one out and Nicaragua ahead 3-2. Sanchez is pulled. Angels fans will always have Shohei Ohtani vs. Mike Trout with the 2023 WBC championship on the line. Mets fans, we will always have Huascar Brazobán vs. Vientos in pool play. (Until it’s McLean vs. Soto in the final?) Brazobán struck out Vientos on four pitches.

The game was tied at 3-3 in the sixth when Caminero hit a two-run homer that sent (most of) loanDepot park into a frenzy. He pounded his chest as he circled the bases, danced at home plate and after the game said the hit was “a dream come true.” DR poured it on, scored six runs in the eighth and in the end this was the most entertaining 12-3 game I’ve ever seen.

We went to Venezuela vs. Israel on Saturday night and again the crowd (22,573) was into it from the start. We kept hearing drums (or some other instrument that must be on the approved list) but couldn’t locate them. I got to see Mets prospect Ben Simon make the start for Israel. If he never makes it to the majors, he can still say he struck out Maikel Garcia. He can also say he walked Ronald Acuña Jr., gave up a double to Luis Arraez and served up a home run to Eugenio Suarez. He recorded one out and gave up four runs.

Israel didn’t get a hit until the fifth inning, never made it a game and Venezuela won 11-3.

Final Thoughts/Suggestions

Part of what makes the WBC fun is seeing a pitcher like Nicaragua’s Stiven Cruz, 24 years old, who never pitched above Double-A, work a 1-2-3 inning where he retired three All-Stars. He got Marte to ground out, struck out Soto and Guerrero bounced to short.

Another great part is that every game is huge. A dozen of the 20 teams will be eliminated in pool play, which means they will only play four times. After that, it’s single elimination the rest of the way. A champion is crowned after playing seven games.

Seed the 20 teams. It would help us casuals know exactly how big of an upset we might be witnessing.

And lastly, be clearer about the cowbell rules!

Freddy Peralta, the new Mets ace, is reportedly seeking a deal of seven or eight years in extension talks with the Mets. Peralta, 29, was acquired from Milwaukee this offseason and is line for a big payday. The former Brewer went 17-6 with a 2.70 ERA in 2025 and will look to be just as productive leading the Mets’ rotation in 2026.

Japan opened the day with a 13-0 win over Chinese Taipei that was highlighted by a grand slam from Shohei Ohtani in Pool C, while Cuba, Venezuela and Mexico notched victories over Panama, the Netherlands and Great Britain, respectively.

There’s four more games set to commence tonight, including a Pool C matchup between both 0-2 teams up to this point in Czechia and Chinese Taipei.

Furthermore, two of the favorites to win the whole event in the United States and the Dominican Republic will head into their first contests of pool play against Brazil and Nicaragua, respectively, while Puerto Rico and Colombia are set to square off against one another.

With that, let’s take a closer look at those games before first pitch.

USA vs. Brazil (8:00 p.m. EST, FOX)

After losing in the 2023 WBC title game to Japan, the United States is looking to bounce back and win it all after doing so for the first time in 2017.

San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb will start for Team USA against Brazil at Daikin Park in Houston.

Mets right-hander Nolan McLean is currently set to toe the rubber for the United States against Italy on March 10. He was late joining the team due to vertigo-like symptoms, though the 24-year-old threw four innings in a sim game on Wednesday and should be good to go moving forward.

Brazil does not have any active major league players on its roster and last appeared in the WBC in 2013, going 0-3. Bo Bichette was originally set to represent the country, though he withdrew upon signing a three-year deal worth $126 million with the Mets in January.

Both the United States and Brazil will be back in action against Great Britain and Italy, respectively, on Saturday.

Nicaragua vs. Dominican Republic (7:00 p.m. EST, FS2)

Managed by Albert Pujols, Juan Soto and the Dominican Republic are looking for revenge after failing to make it out of pool play with a 2-2 record in 2023.

In a star-studded lineup that includes the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr., Ketel Marte, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Manny Machado, among others, Soto will bat third against Nicaragua.

Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez will start for the Dominican Republic and face off against Mets infielder Mark Vientos, who will hit cleanup for Nicaragua at loanDepot Park in Miami.

Nicaragua’s lone prior WBC appearance came in 2023, and they went 0-4 in pool play.

The Dominican Republic, who last won the event in 2013, will next play the Netherlands on Sunday while Nicaragua will face the Netherlands on Saturday.

Two Former Mets Starters Face Off

A pair of former Mets starting pitchers in Seth Lugo and Jose Quintana will go to battle against one another for Puerto Rico and Colombia, respectively, tonight at 6:00 p.m. EST from Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Lugo last played for Puerto Rico in the 2017 WBC and posted a 4.20 ERA over three starts totaling 15 innings. That stretch included a four-inning, four-run outing in an 8-0 loss to the United States in the championship game.

Quintana, meanwhile, is Colombia’s team captain this year after not pitching for the country in the 2023 WBC due to a rib injury he suffered after signing with the Mets that same offseason. He gave up a single earned run over 5 2/3 innings in his lone start of the 2017 WBC, which came against the United States.

Panama’s 2026 World Baseball Classic team features 16 MLB affiliated players this year, including James Gonzalez of The Athletics, Leo Jimenez of the Blue Jays, Javy Guerra of the Braves, Leo Bernal and Ivan Herrera of the Cardinals, Miguel Amaya, Christian Bethancourt, and Erian Rodriguez of the Cubs, Logan Allen of the Guardians, Abdiel Mendoza of the Mariners, Jose Ramos of the Mets, Enrique Bradfield Jr. of the Orioles, Miguel Cienfuegos of the Padres, Edmundo Sosa of the Phillies, and Jose Caballero of the Yankees.

Former big league slugger Carlos Lee will serve as the hitting coach.

METS PLAYERS

The lone player from the Mets organization on Team Panama is center fielder Jose Ramos, who the Mets signed as a free agent in 2025. Last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, he split the season between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. Between the two teams, he batted .251/.326/.456, with a .782 OPS. He had 14 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, driving in 59 RBIs, and 57 runs scored.

Former Mets Rubén Tejada, Alberto Baldonado, Ariel Jurado and Jonathan Araúz will be playing for Panama. This will be Tejada’s last hurrah as a player; he has retired and accepted a coaching position in the Phillies organization.

WBC HISTORY

Panama hopes this will be the year they finally make it past group play. They finished 14th in 2006 and 15th in 2009. They did not qualify in 2013 or 2017, but in 2023, they were one win away from advancing from group play. They got their first two wins of the classic, and after finishing with a 2-2 record, they were eliminated after a five-way tiebreaker decided Pool A.
