Las Vegas manager Wally Backman had some nice things to say about Mets catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud after his impressive debut last night against Sacramento. In the 51′s season-opening 10-5 victory over the River Cats, the 24-year old prospect went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks, a career-high four runs scored and an RBI. “I think it’s just a matter of time before he gets to the big leagues,” 51s manager Wally Backman said. “He […]
Post Updated on 3/20 I caught this transcript on MetsBlog this morning. They were comments made by Sandy Alderson who was a guest on the New York Post’s baseball podcast. The subject was Terry Collins‘s lame duck status and the possibility of a contract extension in the future: “Well, I want Terry to be the manager. He and I have a great rapport. I think he does a great job with the players. They believe […]
It usually is not a good sign when a name not recently in the news shows up on the “What’s Trending Now,’’ list when one logs onto the Internet. Dwight Gooden was there this morning and we can expect to see future postings as his latest issue with the law unravels. Gooden, long out of baseball but not forgotten by Mets fans, allegedly threatened his estranged wife, Monique, on Friday, when he should have been on […]
In a conference call Wednesday evening, Mets GM Sandy Alderson addressed several issues surrounding the team. Here are some of the things he told us: Catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud will not be allowed to block the plate. The reason for that is obvious – his health. The leadoff spot is still up in the air but Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who is the leading candidate, still has a lot of work to do. If Nieuwenhuis plays full-time […]
February 23 – The Mets have announced they’ve signed first baseman Rhyne Hughes to a minor league contract and that he will report to minor league camp. Hughes, 29, played 75 games for Double-A Bowie in the Baltimore Orioles system last season. The left-handed hitting Hughes batted .278/.370 OBP/.504 with 19 doubles, 13 home runs and 51 RBI in 313 plate appearances. His only sip of coffee in the majors came in 2010 when he batted .213 in 14 […]
Miraculous as Game 6 of the 1986 World Series was, all it did was force a seventh and deciding game. Do you remember seeing the replay of Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk waving for the ball to stay fair in the 1975 World Series? That home run gave the Red Sox a thrilling 12-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds in Game 6. That’s right. It happened in Game 6. Just like the Mets’ dramatic Game […]
Here are some Mets thoughts from the afternoon media session from Tuesday’s 23rd annual MLB B.A.T. Dinner. Gary Sheffield Sheffield said it was not difficult for him to retire after his long career, which included a World Series championship in 1997 with the Marlins and hitting his 500th career home run as a Met. “I pretty much did everything I wanted to do on a baseball field,” he said. He has enjoyed spending time playing […]
Last week I wrote about how the Mets need to find ways to entice the fans to come out to the ballpark in 2011. Last week I brought up the idea of retiring 17 in honor Keith Hernandez. I thought it would give Mets fans something to look forward to during the long season that 2011 will be and I thought that when looking back on 2011 it would be a fun thing to remember. […]
The last two weeks or so have been some of the worst I’ve experienced as a Mets fan. I can deal with the 2007 and 2008 collapse. I can deal with Generation K being Generation 0. I can even deal with losing the World Series to the Yankees and losing Game 7 of the NLCS against the Cardinals. What I can’t deal with is watching the fan base at war with one another over who […]
