Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus cashed in a big way by agreeing to an eight-year, $120 million contract extension. The deal hasn’t been finalized, but should be made official on Thursday. There is a clause that would allow Andrus to opt out after the fourth year if he chooses, but since the extension doesn’t kick in till after his current contract expires after 2014, that means he’s signed at least through 2018, which would be […]
There have been many changes and lost traditions in baseball over the years. One particularly missed is the spectacle that used to be Opening Day. The season always started on a Tuesday in Cincinnati and Washington; the home of the sport’s oldest franchise and in the nation’s capital for the national past time. This year, lost in the midst of the NCAA Tournament, the start of the baseball season begins with Sunday’s highly anticipated Houston […]
Updated by Joe D. at 1:25 PM on 3/28 An astounding revelation by Andy Martino of the Daily News today, and repeated by Matt Cerrone from the mountaintop that is MetsBlog. This may came as a shock to all of you, but apparently Ruben Tejada is not the Mets shortstop of the future. I’ll give you a few minutes to get up from the floor and compose yourselves. But seriously, if anyone thought that Tejada was anything […]
At this point, I think everyone knows that I am a Matt den Dekker fan. I’ve argued in his favor since early spring training, when he leaped through the St. Lucie night and pulled a would-be home run from beyond the left-centerfield wall. Many Mets fans never knew who den Dekker was until that moment. That catch brought him into the limelight. But maybe it was just one catch, people thought. If you’ve read the scouting […]
Bobby Parnell struck out the side in the ninth inning of the Mets 6-2 win over the Astros last night. He lowered his ERA to 2.31 for the spring in 12 appearances. Parnell looks to be in mid-season form as he prepares to take on the closer role for the Mets. I believe this was the plan all along even if Frank Francisco hadn’t gotten hurt. Pitching coach Dan Warthen is confident that Parnell will rise to […]
There are two no-brainers in place for the Mets with their latest injury news. The first was the slam-dunk Shaun Marcum would be injured. The surprise was it happened before the team broke camp, but considering the shape he reported in, well, maybe not so much. The second is the inevitable early clamor for the Mets to promote prospect Zack Wheeler, which should be an emphatic NO WAY.Manager Terry Collins told reporters today in Port St. Lucie, but he has […]
Updated at 4:30 PM Okay, well nobody actually said that, but I thought it made for a great title… However, in case you were wondering about it, perish the thought… Terry Collins just said that Zack Wheeler will not be considered as a replacement for Shaun Marcum in the rotation and will not pitch for the Mets at all in April. “His ultimate promotion will have nothing to do with other injuries and they don’t think […]
Clayton – Jordany Valdespin, I see Cowgill getting a hot start then hitting a wall. Valdespin however I could see being the best run producer in the outfield in 2013. Adam – Collin Cowgill because he’s a better defender and has better plate discipline/selection at the plate. Valdespin will hit for more power and be a question mark on defense, while Cowgill will produce better on-base numbers to go along with decent defense. XtreemIcon […]
If you are like me, you look forward to a time when the major rebuilding is done and the Mets can (hopefully) embark on an extended period of high level competitiveness and play meaningful games (to borrow a phrase) each fall. Assuming that time is near (2014? 2015?), what will the team’s roster look like? I offer a speculative peek from one fan’s perspective that will focus on internal options: FIRST BASE: This should be […]
