Baseball is a game of adjustments. The Mets under Dave Hudgens’ tutelage have adopted a doctrine of selectivity that emphasizes seeing lots of pitches, running up pitch-counts, zoning in on your pitch, and ultimately getting on base one way or another. There has been a lot of discussion on MMO about whether this approach is effective. The consensus, bolstered by a pile of data, seems to be that it is. Teams that take lots of […]
Updated by Joe D. on 4/20 What a game it was for Lucas Duda last night in the Mets 7-1 win against the Nationals. Duda had his best game ever as a Met going 2-for-3 with hit two home runs and a walk . The hulking Mets left fielder is now batting .308 for the season with five home runs and eight RBI in 14 games. Duda’s patience has paid off as Adam Rossi said it would […]
Updated by Joe D. on 4/17 Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, spoke to Mets GM Sandy Alderson who essentially said that Zack Wheeler’s performance at Triple-A Las Vegas is the primary consideration for him to be promoted to the big leagues. Or in other words, what I’ve been saying all along and you can read below this update. “Super Two status is a consideration”, Alderson told Rubin. “But his level of performance is probably the major consideration. He pitched […]
By definition, Jon Niese is correct, he is not a No. 1 pitcher, an ace if you will. However, in relation to his status on the Mets, he is the man. There is no denying Niese’s importance, but his designation of being the leader of the staff should be emphasized more today against Miami than in the status of an Opening Day starter. After two victories to open the season, the Mets have dropped two in a […]
I was able to meet with Matt Harvey on Monday and we had a nice little exchange while he sat in front of his locker thinking about his upcoming start on Wednesday night against the Padres. There is a likable quality to this young man and it has nothing to do with his pitching. He speaks with confidence that doesn’t border arrogance. He has a big time arm without the big time attitude. He’s attentive to your questions, and […]
The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Mets this afternoon by the score of 9-1 at Tradition Field. Most of the damage came against starting pitcher Dillon Gee who was absolutely awful and completely out of sync. Gee had no control as evidenced by his four walks, two hit batters and three wild pitches in just two innings of work. He was charged with six earned runs and didn’t beat around the bush after the […]
If for nothing else, if for absolutely nothing else, Matthew Edward Harvey makes 2013 a year worth watching in New York Mets baseball. Ever since he was drafted seventh overall by the Amazin’s in the 2010 draft, we have patiently anticipated this time to come. We have anxiously awaited his name to move from the top of the prospect rankings to the top of the Mets rotation. We had a nine-start taste of the future; but now, […]
Kirk Nieuwenhuis came up last season after CF Andres Torres went down. Billed as an athletic and toolsy outfielder with some promise, Nieuwenhuis hit the ground running raking to the tune of a .325 batting average in March and April. Then came some strike outs, and more strike outs, and then came a whole lot of weak grounders and even more strikeouts, which led to his demotion in July when he batted .105 — deer […]
SNY analyst Bobby Ojeda came down HARD on the Mets new philosophy at the plate with regard to heir approach at the plate during tonight’s Mets pre-game show. For those that missed it, Ojeda ripped into what he called “this business of taking so many pitches” that the organization has forced the players to adopt. It started like this after Carlin shifted the conversation to the struggling Mets offense: Chris Carlin: Are we starting to […]
