Even though the Mets’ bullpen ranks 13th in the NL with a 4.09 ERA and 14th with a .261 BAA, there has been many positive developments as opposed to 2011-2012 when Sandy Alderson was forced to completely revamp the pen and hit the reset button. Before suffering a herniated disk in his neck that was operated on last week, Bobby Parnell was establishing himself as one of the league’s top closers, using his knuckle curve […]
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets have no intention of non-tendering Ike Davis based on what team insiders have told him. Rubin adds that team insiders appear satisfied that Davis will not be cost prohibitive in 2014 in a way that would force them to cut him loose. That may be true, but I would still be very surprised Ike Davis is still a Met in 2014. If ever there was […]
In major league baseball, injuries are a common, almost expected part of the game. If you are an everyday player, you generally play between 135 and 150 games a season. If you are a starting pitcher you may appear in as many as 30-35 games. A reliever can pitch theoretically at around 100 games max. When we look at all the members of the Mets that have landed on the DL for either parts of […]
According to Marc Carig of Newsday, lefthanded reliever Scott Rice will undergo season-ending surgery for a hernia. Rice has been one of the biggest surprises for the Mets this season and has a 3.71 ERA with a league-leading 73 appearances. In 51.0 innings pitched, Rice has walked 27 while striking out 41, however it was against lefthanded hitters that he really excelled holding them to a .174/.244/.223 slash. Wow… This explains today’s earlier announcement that […]
Who remembers John Milton Rivers? You know, that speedy center fielder that used to run funny and played for the Yankees during their 1977 and 1978 championship years? I guess you probably know him better by his baseball name, Mickey… Last week, I had an interesting debate with the executive producer of SNY, when I asked him why two of his blogs posted that Daniel Huchingson was suspended for 50 games. “It’s his given name.” […]
Just wanted to update this post and say that Daniel Murphy has been named National League Player of the Week for the period ending September 1. Congrats to Murph and nice job by Steph for making a great call! There were close games, there were blowouts. There was dominant pitching, there was offensive outbursts. This week in Mets baseball was mostly 50/50, splitting the series from the lowly Phillies and taking 2/3 from the recently surging […]
The Mets (62-73) lost to the Nationals (69-67) by a score of 6-5 Sunday night at Nationals Park. Jon Niese took the hill against Ross Ohlendorf as the Mets sought to sweep Washington on the road. Jon was handed a 2-0 lead before throwing a pitch thanks to Daniel Murphy’s RBI double and an RBI single from Lucas Duda. Matt den Dekker padded the lead in the top of the 2nd with his first MLB […]
Call me crazy, but… I’ve been thinking about the Mets upcoming offseason and wondering what the team will do to improve. They have two problems to address: 1. Not enough impact position players on the team, particularly in the power department. 2. Recapturing the interest of fans, or in other words, convincing fans that the team isn’t “all talk and no action.” Most of the free agent options discussed have drawbacks: Jacoby Ellsbury has an […]
Carlos Torres was locked in from the second this game started and seemed determined to prove that he deserved a spot in this rotation. Of course, if he pitches the way he did today on a consistent basis, it’d be hard to keep him out of it — even though he’s sort of landed in the role by default by now. With Jeremy Hefner, Jenrry Mejia, and Matt Harvey all down with injury while Jacob […]
