The Mets (73-62) defeated the Marlins (63-72) 19-9 on Friday night. With 19 runs scored, it is the most ever scored by the Mets in a home game, per Sarah Langs. The Mets knocked Eury Pérez out of the game after just two-thirds of an inning and scored 12 runs over the first two innings. Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso, Mark Vientos and Luis Torrens (Vientos and Torrens off a position player) all homered in the effort.

In addition to the offensive fireworks, Jonah Tong made his major league debut. Tong looked great but saw his pitch count rise late into his outing, especially with some poor defense behind him in the fifth inning. He ended his night with four runs allowed (just one earned) in five innings with six hits, no walks and six strikeouts. His ERA through one start is 1.80.

The Mets (62-48) fell to the Giants (55-55) 4-3 in 10 innings Friday night. Ryan Helsley and Cedric Mullins made their Mets debuts during the game with Helsley striking out three in a tie game in the top of the ninth, and Mullins going 0-for-1 after coming into the game in the ninth to pinch hit.

Prior to Friday’s game, the Mets announced a few roster moves. The team announced the addition of the newest Met, Cedric Mullins, to the roster. The corresponding move sent Luisangel Acuña to Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets also announced that José Castillo was outrighted to Syracuse and Brandon Waddell is expected to begin a rehab assignment in Double-A on Saturday.

The Mets also signed lefty reliever Jefry Yan to a minor league deal. Yan has spent the year with the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate, recording a dreadful 7.28 ERA in 27 appearances. However, he recorded a 1.71 ERA in 25 appearances in the Dominican Winter League.

The Yankees announced that they released starter and former Met Marcus Stroman. Stroman struggled mightily on the mound this year, recording a 6.23 ERA in nine starts. The Yankees also officially added David Bednar, Jake Bird, Camilo Doval and José Caballero to their roster.

In their Yankee debuts against the Marlins, Bird and Bednar combined to allow six runs in the seventh inning, blowing a 9-4 Yankees lead. Doval and Caballero also made their Yankee debuts. The Mets were powered by Brandon Nimmo, who delivered a monster game. He went 4-for-6 with two home runs and nine RBIs, which ties Carlos Delgado for the all-time club record in a single game. All of the RBIs came from the sixth inning onward and included a three-run homer, a grand slam, and a two-run double.

The offensive outburst was desperately needed from Nimmo, who entered Monday’s action seriously struggling. In one game, Nimmo raised his OPS from .575 to .679 and added nine RBIs to the 12 he had through 26 games.

Jeff McNeil also played a pivotal role in the victory, at least early on when the game was still close. McNeil, who has dealt with his own struggles the past few years, went 2-for-5 with a home run, a triple, and a sacrifice fly while playing center field and batting eighth in the order. McNeil drove in the Mets’ second and third runs of the game, hitting his sacrifice fly in the second inning after a 10-pitch at-bat before crushing his homer on the first pitch of the fifth inning. He drove in three runs in total.

The Mets’ 3-0 lead didn’t last long, as the lead was instantly doubled in the sixth inning. Nimmo broke the game open by doubling the Mets’ lead from 3-0 to 6-0 with a 410-foot, three-run home run—his first of the game. He unloaded on a high fastball against lefty Colin Poche, who bested Nimmo in Sunday’s game by getting him to ground into a double play.

In case Nimmo’s sixth-inning home run wasn’t big enough of a statement, the left fielder crushed a grand slam in the seventh inning, pushing the Mets’ lead from 7-0 to 11-0. Nimmo came up again in the eighth inning with the bases loaded yet again, and this time he ripped a double down the right field line, driving in two more runs to give him nine on the day.

McNeil and Luisangel Acuña drove in two more runs following Nimmo’s hit, putting the Mets up 15-0. In the top of the ninth, former Met Amed Rosario was sent out as the sacrificial position player to pitch to the Mets. He allowed four runs, giving up an RBI single to Jesse Winker before Mark Vientos unloaded a three-run homer to give the Mets 19 runs for the day.

The Mets’ shutout was broken by this point, with José Ureña seriously laboring in the eighth inning and allowing five runs. Ureña, who pitched a clean seventh inning to begin his outing, stayed on for the ninth inning and was able to complete the three-inning save to keep the Mets’ bullpen fresh.

Lost in all the offensive fireworks was another great outing from Griffin Canning, who tossed five scoreless innings. With his effort, Canning improved his record to 4-1 and his ERA from 3.12 to 2.61 as he continues to look like a brilliant David Stearns signing. Max Kranick also recorded a scoreless inning as his great season continues.

In the win, the Mets scored 19 runs on 21 hits, with eight Mets batters recording two or more hits. The win also makes the Mets the first MLB team to reach 20 wins this year, as their record now sits at 20-9.

They salvaged a series tie in emphatic fashion and will now head back to Citi Field for their next series.

Stat of the Game: Nimmo Makes Mets History

Brandon Nimmo had a historic game, tying Carlos Delgado for the most RBIs in a single game in Mets history with nine. He also became the first player to record nine RBIs in a three-inning span since Sammy Sosa did so in Colorado in 2002.

No surprise here. Nimmo had the best offensive game of his career and willed the Mets to a lopsided victory. He raised his OPS by .104 points and increased his RBI total on the year by 75 percent.

On Deck

The Mets return home Tuesday to begin a series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. David Peterson (1-1, 3.29 ERA) will go for the Mets while Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2, 4.40 ERA) will go for Arizona in a matchup of southpaws.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on SNY.

Edwin Díaz officially returns from his 10-game suspension on Saturday. It’s amazing news for Mets fans, who have seen some brutal performances from the team’s bullpen during his absence. Díaz won’t solve all the bullpen’s problems, but the impact of getting that extra man back and having an actual closer can’t be overstated. The Mets went 5-5 during Díaz’s absence but certainly could have and should have won more.

The team tied the all-time franchise record by allowing seven home runs including two grand slams, while the Pirates themselves tied their franchise record with seven long balls. Luis Severino allowed seven runs in six innings while Jake Diekman and Ty Adcock combined to allow seven runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Syracuse Mets manager Dick Scott and pitching prospect Mike Vasil spoke to the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast about the impact that Jose Iglesias had while he was in Syracuse.

Rosario spent time with the Braves from 2021 to 2023 and was a huge piece of their World Series team. He was recently released from the Nationals, where he had a .555 OPS in 67 games this season.

Robert Murray of FanSided reported that Carl Edwards Jr. signed a minor league deal with the Padres. Edwards Jr. had a 3.69 ERA in 32 games with the Nationals last year and was pitching really well in Triple-A this year with the Cubs organization.

Kumar Rocker began a rehab assignment on Friday night. The former Mets draft pick and current Rangers prospect underwent Tommy John surgery last year after posting a 3.86 ERA in High-A.

According to Paulsen of Sports Media Watch, there was a record audience of nearly five million viewers for the World Baseball Classic final.  The Fox Sports 1 audience outdrew all but one MLB game on the network last year (including postseason). The game referenced was Phillies vs. Padres NLCS game four with an average of 4.88 million viewers. Tuesday’s Japan vs. United States World Baseball Classic championship game averaged 4.48 million viewers on Fox Sports 1 and 4.97 million viewers when including Fox Sports Deportes.

Tim Healey of Newsday reports that Carlos Carrasco will not make his scheduled minor league start on Thursday. Buck Showalter said it is because of “elbow maintenance” that he does periodically. Carrasco will skip this outing and pitch five days later (Tuesday, also a minor-league game).

Edwin Diaz tweeted the following message Wednesday morning (translated): “I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to celebrate another year of life with my loved ones, it’s already 29, we’re going to the third level soon. Regarding my health, I feel super good, positive in rehabilitation so I can return as soon as possible.”

Michael Mayer reports that MLB games on Apple TV will not be free this year. To watch them, you must be a Apple TV+ subscriber. The Mets at Phillies game on June 23rd will be on Apple TV+.

On ESPN’s “Get Up,” Buster Olney said that Shohei Ohtani‘s future contract could be worth 600 million dollars or more because “there’s nobody else in baseball that can do what he can do […] He’s going to have enormous bidding for the best player in the world.”

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that Brewers ace Corbin Burnes has hired BorasCorp to represent him. The former Cy Young winner is a free agent at the end of the season.

Mike Trout wrote his WBC reflections on his Twitter: “It’s hard to sum up into words what these last couple of weeks have meant to me. I had the time of my life representing that USA on my chest! Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports that Ranger Suárez will likely not be ready to begin the season. He still has inflammation in his left arm so the team sent him for an MRI Wednesday. He has no structural damage. He will take a few days to rest it. At this point, it appears Matt Strahm could begin the season as the Phillies’ fifth starter.

On this date four years ago, the Mets agreed to send outfield prospect Jarred Kelenic, right-handed pitching prospects Justin Dunn and Gerson Bautista, and veterans Anthony Swarzak and Jay Bruce to the Mariners in exchange for closer Edwin Díaz and second baseman Robinson Canó.

Fast forward to Dec. 1, 2022, when Mets’ GM Billy Eppler and Díaz are on a Zoom call with reporters to talk about the record-setting five-year, $102 million deal the Mets gave the start closer. Díaz acknowledged that he saw on social media that it was the four-year anniversary of the deal. “Four years ago, I was getting traded to here, and now I’m signing the biggest deal for a reliever,” Díaz said.

The 28-year-old Díaz entered the 2022 season coming two solid seasons in a row after a disastrous first season in New York and he quickly announced to the baseball world that he was ready to dominate once again. Díaz struck out a ridiculous 50.2% of the batters he faced and posted a minuscule 1.31 ERA in 62 innings for the Mets as they won 101 games.

Both Díaz and Eppler said that the deal to stay in New York came together quickly as both sides made it clear what they wanted. “The number one priority for me and my family was to stay in New York because we love the team and the organization. They treated us great and we feel like they’re a part of our family,” Diaz said.

Eppler was of course asked questions about the Mets’ long list of free agents and how he plans on filling out the roster for the 2023 season. “Without getting into specifics… I’m having an active dialogue on many fronts. The volume of phone calls and connections… are pretty constant,” Eppler said.

The opinion of Mets fans on the trade with the Mariners has certainly much different on Dec. 1 of 2022.
