Who Are These Doctors Anyway?

You know, I can accept the fact that the injury bug has bitten our Mets hard this season, and that freak accidents have hurt, as has being beaned in the head by opposing pitchers. We’ve learned to accept that we have average to below-average replacements and that the season was basically over before the all-star break. Now we’re biding our time and waiting until next year, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t bored out of my mind by these guys (not including last night’s barrage on the Braves).

But here’s something I just can’t get past. The disabled list itself, and the fact that our core that have landed on there (Beltran, Reyes, Delgado, Putz, Maine) and are probably all done for the season. Here is the list of who went on the DL when, and why…

The 60-day DL sometimes means longer, but how is it that Reyes, Maine and Beltran are all on the 15-day DL? So far, Reyes has been on there for 90 days, Maine 73 days, and Beltran 58 days. We’re not talking broken bones here. We’re talking tendonitis, shoulder fatigue and a bone bruise, respectively. I’m not a doctor, but apparently neither are the guys in charge of the Mets’ infirmary either. I think there is a real problem in this organization, whether that’s on the diagnosis end or in the weight room or something. But there is a problem here for sure.

Broken Finger Wipes Out Ramon Martinez

Mets.com reports that Mets backup shortstop, Ramon Martinez was removed from the Mets’ 3-1 loss to the Pirates on Tuesday night at PNC Park after the fifth inning, when he suffered a dislocated left pinky on an awkward, but successful slide into the plate.

Martinez’s scored on a sacrifice fly by Luis Castillo. His slide was part tumble. He seemed to touch the plate with his right toe as he slid past catcher Jason Jaramillo.

Jerry Manuel said Martinez will be going to New York to be examined by a doctor and could be placed on the DL.

The Mets continue to drop like flies.

Can We Ditch Ramon Martinez Now?

I have seen all I can stand of Ramon Martinez filling in at shortstop.

He may go down in Mets history as the worst shortstop ever to field the position. Four errors in three games?

Even Fernando Tatis couldn’t possibly do any worse than Martinez, so why not have him fill in for Reyes so that we could take advantage of his bat?

Ramon Martinez has just one hit in 16 at bats this season… one!

After the first game, when Martinez made his first two errors, it was plain to see this was a colossal failure, so why didn’t the Mets call up Argenis Reyes if only for a stop gap measure?

I can’t believe that Ramon Martinez is currently number two on the depth chart behind Jose Reyes, in fact I refuse to accept that.

Hopefully, Jose Reyes can get back today and all of this would be a mute point, but initially they said he could miss a week. We don’t have a week to throw away games with shoddy defense at shortstop.

Manuel didn’t sound to optimistic either…

“I don’t have choices. That’s the problem, I don’t know what other choices I have. I’d hate to put Tatis there, who has only played in an emergency, if Reyes is not available. It’s just the way it is right now, it’s unfortunate.”

Omar needs to pick up the phone and get someone else, anyone else at shortstop as quickly as possible.

Ramon Martinez is an embarrassment, and Johan Santana deserved a better shortstop last night.
