Manuel To Starters: Swim or Sink?
Following yesterday’s game, Mets manager Jerry Manuel spoke to reporters at his post game presser and said that he will use his current starting pitchers one more time through the rotation. But he also cautioned that if things do not get better, he will make some changes. “It’s not rocket science,” Manuel said. “If they ain’t pitching, then you’ve got to find somebody who will.” I don’t know what he possibly could do as a manager other [...]

Jerry Manuel Sounds The Alarm
The Mets could have upgraded the rotation this off season, but instead they chose to bring back the same 1-4 starters and fill the fifth spot with Livan Hernandez who will try to salvage the final game of the series this afternoon against the Cardinals. Manuel was visibly frustrated and not his usual candid self during last nights post game press conference. He is clearly dismayed with his under achieving rotation. “We can’t continue to [...]

Do We Give Ollie Another Turn in the Rotation?
A 7-2 victory was just what the doctor ordered. Yes! When Ron Darling says that a guy “pitched really well tonight” who am I to dispute? Given the weather and lack of great run support, I agree. He looked good and maintained his composure. His slider looked good, and nice to see he’s sporting a new and rather effective changeup. No sense making any predictions given his erratic, “Jekyll-Hyde-esque” performances, but tonight we got the [...]

Perez Not Hopping, Keith Thinks Jackie Has Big Feet
Hey, did anyone else just notice that Oliver Perez didn’t skip over the foul line like he usually does after the first? It’s the first time I’ve seen him end the first inning without his customary hop over the line as he is heading to the dugout. Keith Hernandez just got a chance to speak with Rachel Robinson in the booth. His first words? “First of all, I never knew Jackie Robinson had such big [...]

Mets Notes: Sheffield, Pelfrey, Ollie, Wagner
Gary Sheffield is expected to start in right field for the first time this season. He enters the game with 499 homeruns and may mark the first memorable Mets moment at Citi Field if he hits number 500 at Shea tonight. I’m not exactly sure how to feel about that, but if it’s a game winning homer than bring it on. Who knows what we can expect from Oliver Perez when he takes the mound [...]

Will Perez Force Mets To Get A Starter At Deadline?
I was just reading an interesting article by David Lennon of Newsday on his blog. Lennon seems all fired up about comments that were made by Jerry Manuel and Dan Warthen who both said they were encouraged by Ollie’s last start. I was kind of surprised yesterday to hear both manager Jerry Manuel and pitching coach Dan Warthen say they were “encouraged” by Oliver Perez’s 4 1/3-inning stint in an 8-6 loss to the Reds. [...]

The Good, The Bad, and The Ollie
It may be far easier to unravel the mysteries of Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid, than it would be to figure out Oliver Perez. Todays performance by Perez was like a perfect microcosm of his entire career. He starts out be teasing us with a tantalizing performance in the first two innings that invoked memories of Sandy Koufax, and then in the next two innings he does his best Kei Igawa impression. How can anyone [...]

Act Two: Big Pelf Takes Center Stage
The jubilation of the Mets Opening Day win becomes somewhat tempered tonight, when Mike Pelfrey takes the mound against Edinson Volquez and the Cincinnati Reds. The certainty and confidence we feel whenever it’s Johan Santana’s turn in the rotation is very comforting to say the least. Dayne Perry of ESPN, wrote today that Johan Santana needs to get off to a fast start. He writes, Perhaps no player is more essential to his team’s success than Santana. He’s [...]

Boo Birds Please Head South For The Season
This past weekend we got a chance to see 2 exhibition games played at our brand new ballpark Citi Field and it didn’t dissapoint. The park is beautiful and I look forward to attending many games there. It’s totally different from Shea but it still felt welcoming. The differences in fact at first was a little overwhelming. The one thing that was the same was the “boo birds” in attendance for Saturday’s game against The [...]
