RHP Jenrry Mejia and LHP Jonathan Niese both delivered solid performances today during the Mets 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Marlins. Despite the losing effort, the Mets dugout was all smiles particularly Jerry Manuel who was delighted in what he saw from his two young starting pitchers this afternoon. Niese started and threw 2.2 innings allowing one earned run and striking out five. He relied heavily on a new cut fastball which he picked up from B-Mets pitching […]
A couple of key prospects rankings were released this week and the Mets are prominently featured in both. First, here is the 2010 Top 100 Prospects from Project Prospect, which features five Mets. 10 Fernando Martinez – LF/RF Plus power/good contact skills may allow him to ascend to stardom. some day. 48 Jon Niese – LHP Commands a sinking FB; CB and SL both get swing-throughs; Likely no. 3 starter. 57 Ike Davis – 1B Strong […]
Kevin Goldstein revealed his Top 11 Mets Prospects on Thursday for Baseball Prospectus. Like some of the prospects lists we’ve seen already, the top pick is once again Jenrry Mejia. Here is what Kevin had to say about the 20-year old uber-prospect. “It’s rare to find a fastball with plus-plus velocity and movement, but Mejia has just that… he needs to find a consistent breaking ball. He gets around on his slider too often, […]
I know there are rumors flying around like crazy about pending free agent signings, and that the Mets are interested in the likes of Ben Sheets, Joel Pineiro and John Smoltz. And while any of those guys are capable of stepping in and being, at the very least, our #4 starter, we should be prepared for the worst. And that “worst” is the depth chart in our starting rotation as it stands today—Johan Santana, Mike […]
When the 2009 season ended for the Mets, the consensus among fans was that number one our priority list was getting a top of the rotation starter. We all breathed a sigh of relief, when Jeff Wilpon and Omar Minaya both indicated the same thing back in October. Since then, we have seen over a half dozen pitchers who could have fit the bill sign with other teams. Those pitchers include Randy Wolf, John Lackey, Roy Halladay and […]
Add Jon Niese to the disabled list for the rest of the year, the 22 year old lefthander suffered an injury in today’s afternoon game. It didn’t look good and as “luck” would have it the news is nowhere near good. Niese had an MRI done and the results of the MRI revealed a complete tear of his hamstring tendon. This injury will require for him to have season ending surgery but should be ready […]
The Mets lost the second game of the doubleheader tonight. The Rockies broke their own 27 inning drought winning the game 4-2. Jon Niese didn’t bring his best stuff to Citi Field tonight. He barely survived 6.1 innings, giving up 8 hits, 4 walks, and 4 runs including a two run homer. The damage could have been a lot worse but Niese executed some big pitches when he absolutely needed an out. David Wright continued his […]
For the life of me, I just can’t ever figure this team out sometimes. Here we are hanging on the edge of a cliff and praying that we don’t fall into complete obscurity, and yet with help just a phone call away, the Mets refuse to dial 911. During the All Star break, I blogged about Jon Niese and wrongly predicted that he would start the second half of the season in the rotation… Nobody’s perfect. On […]
According to MiLB.com, Jon Niese was named International League pitcher of the week after compiling a 1-0 record and 1.06 ERA in two starts for the Bisons. Niese, who allowed 10 hits and struck out 14 in 17 innings, has rebounded to go 4-1 in his last six starts with a 1.04 ERA. After a terrible start to his season, Niese has rebounded nicely and has lowered his ERA to a more respectable 4.31 after […]
