With four days until Opening Day, most teams have their rosters, rotation and batting order set. The Mets are not most teams. Their three remaining exhibition games will do little to answer questions for manager Terry Collins, who undoubtedly won’t be satisfied with what he sees Monday and will be mixing and matching for weeks. The Mets think David Wright and Daniel Murphy will be ready, this after serious doubts just days ago. How things […]
Reliever Elvin Ramirez has been traded to the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations to free up a spot on their 40 Man Roster. That they got anything for him is a mind-blower to me. His 5.48 ERA in 20 MLB appearances will hardly be missed. This one was the easiest cut/trade/release of all. The Mets’ 40-man roster now stands at 38. In other Mets news, the team announced their rotation today. Jon Niese will start Opening Day against the Padres, followed […]
Updated 3/22 I wanted to share Adam Rubin’s projected Opening Day roster which is not too dissimilar to what I projected. Rotation: Jon Niese, Shaun Marcum, Matt Harvey, Dillon Gee and Jeremy Hefner. Bullpen: Bobby Parnell, Brandon Lyon, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchison, Josh Edgin, Pedro Feliciano and Greg Burke. Infield: Ike Davis, Justin Turner, David Wright, Ruben Tejada and John Buck. Outfield: Lucas Duda, Collin Cowgill and Jordany Valdespin. Bench: Marlon Byrd, Mike Baxter, Anthony Recker, Omar Quintanilla […]
The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Mets this afternoon by the score of 9-1 at Tradition Field. Most of the damage came against starting pitcher Dillon Gee who was absolutely awful and completely out of sync. Gee had no control as evidenced by his four walks, two hit batters and three wild pitches in just two innings of work. He was charged with six earned runs and didn’t beat around the bush after the […]
Normally, when a team has five of its hitters drilled in two games a case can be made for retribution. There’s been no such talk from the Mets about the Detroit Tigers taking liberties with their hitters. Jim Leyland’s pitchers have always been aggressive, so perhaps this is just a case of not having control early in spring training. Nonetheless, it hurts just as much in March as it does in July. It will be […]
They all can’t throw like Matt Harvey this time of spring. Overpowering and arguably flawless in yesterday’s start against Miami, Harvey had one of those seamless starts pitchers rarely have in their third spring training game. Dillon Gee, today’s starter against Detroit in Lakeland, has no such illusions. “My mechanics are off,’’ Gee said. “It will be just my third start of the spring, so they are bound to be off. Spring training is for trying to […]
Here it was, the fifth inning and Terry Collins was sending out Matt Harvey again. With his pitch count down, Collins had sent Harvey out for the fourth and was doing it again. Harvey’s command was that good. “I was very impressed (by his pitch count),’’ Collins said. “If he’s going to pitch 215 innings, he’ll be getting deep into games and pitching to contact.’’A lot of things will have to click for that to happen, notably his change-up. […]
Mets starter Dillon Gee took a significant step forward last season, improving in a few key areas. Gee lowered his ERA from 4.43 in 2011 to 4.10 last season. He took some big steps forward and has me optimistic for this upcoming season. The biggest sign of Gee’s improvement last season came from his so-called “peripherals”– walks and strikeouts. He saw a substantial drop in walks, going from 4.0 BB/9 to 2.4, and an increase […]
This time, Terry Collins knew what Johan Santana was doing and seemingly both are on the same page, even though the left-hander was mum today on both his throwing and the death of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. After mugging with several friends on the Venezuelan WBC team, Santana long-tossed in the outfield, and followed that with several pitches off the mound from where he fielded bunts. The timetable is a bullpen session, then batting practice and possibly pitching in […]
