When the day arrives, and it’s clear Zack Wheeler has “figured it out,” this will be the day he will appreciate most. New York Mets fans will prefer to reflect on Wheeler’s first MLB start, six shutout innings vs. Atlanta, but Sunday will be one of those starts that will educate the Mets rookie most as he moves forward. The Mets and Wheeler were roughed up by the Washington Nationals 13-2 Sunday at Citi Field. […]
Zack Wheeler did not throw his bullpen session on Thursday and instead spent the day working with Dan Warthen on altering his delivery so as not to tip his pitches as he was during his start against the White Sox. Regarding the changes they are looking to make, Warthen told ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin: “Open up his glove, keep it at the waist — kind of what we’ve done with [Jeremy] Hefner, kind of […]
Pitching coach Dan Warthen told Mike Puma of the New York Post that he would adjust the rotation to allow Matt Harvey to start the All Star Game if Bruce Bochy gives him the nod. “That is 20 days away, a lot could change,” Collins said, referring to postponements that could alter the rotation. “But if he gets picked to start the game, I would think we would adjust it.” All-Star rosters are set to […]
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s some sage advice for a franchise who oftentimes ends up making a good situation bad, and a bad situation worse. The Mets have always been an organization that loves to get their grubby little hands into everything. Sometimes their meanderings are harmless, but every now and then they do something that really tries my patience as a Met fan. Last night was one of those times. Let […]
Couldn’t help reading today that Bobby Parnell deserves to be an All Star on MetsBlog. Sorry, but I beg to differ. Parnell ranks 13th out of 15 National League closers with 9 saves. The leader, Pittsburgh’s Jason Grilli, has 22 saves, while Edward Mujica of the Cardinals and Craig Kimbrel have 17 saves each. All three have ERAs of 1.93 or lower. Do those three deserve to be All Stars? You bet they do. Parnell isn’t […]
Updated with thoughts by Joe D. on 5/31 When Terry Collins removed Dillon Gee in the eighth inning last night after registering one out, I like everyone else who were interacting on Twitter busted a gasket. Here was Gee, pitching the game of his life and in the midst of retiring 15 consecutive batters – including the last five via a strikeout – and Collins decided to pull him despite only throwing 88 pitches to that […]
The month of May for Jon Niese will hopefully become a microcosm for the New York Mets season, it’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish. In what was a horrendous start to the season for Niese, the Mets young southpaw has put together a nice stretch over the past three outings to put his year back on track after seeing his ERA balloon to 5.93. In his first two starts on the […]
You know I bet you could build a supercomputer that would be able to manage the NY Mets. Maybe something like the robot from Lost in Space. A robot would probably have put in Juan Lagares instead of Collin Cowgill in the late innings last night … That’s because robots are nothing if not logical. Robots don’t go on intuition or hunches, they don’t make bullpen decisions based on their gut … Their guts are wires and blinking lights […]
Several times this season John Buck’s fast start fueled speculation that with Travis d’Arnaud’s promotion the Mets might deal him at the trade deadline. After all, who doesn’t want a hot-hitting catcher who calls a crisp game behind the plate? Most every team would and that includes the Mets, who, along with Buck exceeded early expectations. It’s not as if Buck has gone from trade bait to indispensable, but he isn’t going anywhere any time soon. […]
