3G 12.00 era 3ip 3H 4ER 1HR 2/4 BB/K

My Take

As you can plainly see about our hitters: They are all struggling. Vaughn has done the best hitting 3 of his 9 hits for extra bases, but his nature to strike out has been exposed. Aderlin Rodriguez has been struggling, mostly to make contact, and hasn’t drawn a single walk. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because he shaking off the cobwebs after missing half the year while facing against elite competition. Cam Maron has proven his tool of plate discipline drawing almost three times as many walks as he has struck out. There is obviously need for improvement, which will happen as our players adjust to the league.

On the center of the diamond, pitching has been mostly thriving. Hansel Robles has been steadily improving from letting two runs in his first appearance over an inning, to letting one run in 3 innings the following start, and then pitching spectacularly in his third start. Chasen Bradford has proved why he was sent to the AFL, tossing up zeroes in all five and a third innings, as has Cody Satterwhite. Jeurys Familia has been struggling since his first appearance to get himself back together after having surgery during the season. He has the chance to turn it around however.

Look for more updates during the next few weeks, and an interesting tool to use to keep track of the Met’s players in the winter leagues by clicking here.

Over the past several seasons the Mets have shown the fans how important pitching is to the organization. They have developed and brought up homegrown pitching prospects to debut with the team, with the likes of Jon Niese, Dillon Gee, Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jenrry Mejia, and Bobby Parnell. Each have shown signs of brilliance, but due to injuries, they have not been able to help the team put together winning seasons. But the Mets continue to add talented pitching prospects for insurance. And with how the Mets are developing each one of their skills, they may just be the right pieces to help bring a championship back to Queens.

One of these top pitching prospects is Steven Matz, who helped the Savannah Sand Gnats win the 2013 SAL Championship with a dominating pitching performance.

Matz was signed by the Mets in the 2nd round of the 2009 June Amateur Draft from Ward Melville, HS in East Setauket, NY. But it took him a few years before he would pitch his first game as a pro. The lefty injured his elbow while working out in extended spring training back in May 2010. The road to recovery took two years and I asked him how frustrating it was to be out of baseball for so long, “It was definitely a bummer when I found out that I needed Tommy John, but I realized it was time to go to work and get back on the field. It took a while but thankfully, it all paid off”, says Matz.

The young southpaw was correct; it actually did pay off, because even in his first season of pro baseball in 2012 with Kingsport, he showed why the Mets believed in his ability. In six games, he was 2-1 and 1.55 ERA, with 34 strikeouts in 29 innings. In 2013, he was promoted to Savannah and in 21 starts; he was 5-6 with a 2.62 ERA, 1 CG, 1 shutout, and 121 strikeouts in 106.1 innings pitched.

He helped lead the Sand Gnats through the playoffs with two dominating performances. In Game 2 of the first round he pitched 7.0 innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts and he didn’t give up a run in a 5-0 victory. In Game 4 of the Championship series, he allowed just four hits, recorded 9 strikeouts and didn’t give up an earned run in 5.2 innings, while earning the victory in both games to clinch both series.

When asked what was it like to be so dominating and be able to lead the team to victory, Matz said, ”It was an awesome feeling to pitch in both clinching games, that’s just kind of the way it felt. We would have felt comfortable throwing any of our guys on the clinching games, because that’s how dominant our whole pitching staff was. It was a great way to finish the season for our team. Personally I am glad I was able to finish strong, and ultimately help the team win a championship.”

Matz was picked by Baseball America at #20 on their top prospect list for the Sally League. He may be a few years away, but if he continues with his development, the Mets look to have another solid pitcher to add to their growing talent pool.

Enjoy my conversation with Matz about his journey in baseball:

David – Is there something that you would like to share with the Mets fans that they do not already know about you? Your interests, hobbies outside of baseball?

Steven – Even though I am from Long Island, NY, I enjoy the outdoors a lot. I love hunting and fishing, and I mostly picked these hobbies up after I started playing for the Mets, but now I am hooked.

David – What would it mean to you to be able to make your major league debut at Citi Field, knowing that your family and friends are not too far away on Long Island?

Steven – It would be pretty awesome if I could make my major league debut at Citi field. Not many people ever get that chance, let alone having your debut within an hour from your house. It would definitely make it easier on the family, because I know most likely all of them would be there. (My family are big baseball fans)

David – Who was a big influence for you while growing up and playing baseball?

Steven – My Dad was the biggest influence for me growing up. He spent hours upon hours at the field with me, and took me all around the country to play in tournaments, showcases or whatever it may be. I also see how hard he worked to give our family a good life, and he took that work ethic and instilled it in me and my siblings.

David – On the day that you were signed by the Mets in 2009, who was the first person you shared the news with?

Steven – Well I was sitting on my couch with my parents; I had a pretty good feeling that I was going to get picked, just not sure where or when. My aunt and uncle who live down the road had a bunch of people over their house. When I heard my name called, I went over there. It was a pretty exciting time.

David – In 2012, you played your first pro baseball season with Kingsport, what was the experience like to finally be on the field again?

Steven – Last year, to finally get back on the field felt great. I felt a little lost out there at first, but I was able to get my feet under me a little bit towards the end of the season. Kingsport is a great place to start a career, I feel. You have loyal fans, but not too many where there is tons of pressure. Also, we traveled to some cool places up in the Appalachian Mountains.

David – In 2013 with Savannah, you appeared in 21 games and pitched well in your first full pro season, what can you say attributed to your turnaround?

Steven – I don’t know what really made me turn the corner; I thank God for my health this year as I pretty much did the same thing I do every year as far as the off-season. I know a big contributor, as far as staying on the field and rebounding in between starts, was our trainer Tom Truedson. I knew Tom since 2009 and he’s seen the troubles I had with being able to stay out there and pitch. We had a good routine that he’d have me do and it helped a lot. Also Frank Viola worked with me on a routine as far as a throwing program; we sat down and put one together and it helped me feel good for each start.

David – Can you describe the feeling of winning the South Atlantic League Championship, this past season with Savannah?

Steven – The feeling of winning the championship really is a great feeling. A lot of people were unsure of how we were going to do without our sluggers like Jayce Boyd and Kevin Plawecki. It was cool to see other guys step up. We all worked hard all year, and our manager Luis Rojas kept with us and pushed us every day. I have never won a big championship like that before, and it was a great feeling to finish out on top.

David – What teammate has impressed you the most this season, and who should Mets fans be most excited about seeing in the future?

Steven – It’s hard to put a finger on any one guy because we had some many good performers this season. Jayce Boyd, however, is an unbelievable hitter. He’s fun to watch hit, and he is such a smart hitter. I like to pick his brain on what he is thinking while he is up there at the plate.

David – Is there a Met manager or coach who has made an impact in your approach to the game and helped elevate your performance?

Steven – Having Frank Viola as my pitching coach this year was a true blessing. Having a 15 or 16 year big league career, he has seen it all. He really knows how to optimize a pitching staff. He knew what each of us were capable of and he didn’t let us do any less. And it showed.

David – With the success you have had in your brief time in the minors; do you feel like you are on track with the goals you set for yourself? If so, what are you expecting for 2014?

Steven – Yes I do feel I am back on track. This past season I set a goal of 100 innings and including the playoffs I tallied 119 innings. For next season I would like to bypass the 130 inning mark, and let the rest take care of itself.

David – Moving forward, what stands between you and the big leagues? What do you specifically need to work on as a player, and improve upon, in order to be ready to compete on the big stage?

Steven – I think there are a few things that stand right now, the main being just the experience. Just logging innings would definitely polish all I have right now. I would also like to find more consistency of my breaking pitch. This season I did lack a little confidence out there that Frank Viola and I talked a lot about. Confidence in every pitch and knowing that I am able to go out there and dominate. Because you have to know you can before you actually do.

David – How will you prepare over the winter; can you describe your workout regimen?

Steven – I work out in Garden City, NY, at the Professional Athletic Performance Center. We have a great group of pro guys that go there like Cam Maron, and other guys from different organizations. After about a month of rest or so, it’s time to get back to work out there.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

We want to thank Steven for giving us some time… He is a solid young pitcher with great potential and will eventually make a major impact in the Mets rotation. Maybe by then Harvey will be back in full force and the Mets will have a very good problem, enough pitching to go after a crown.

The best news to come out of this past week in the Mets minor league system was the Savannah Sand Gnats capturing their first SAL Championship since 1996. The only bad news about that? Mets Minors has officially closed the book on the 2013 season, looking ahead to 2014. Don’t worry though, we’ll be rolling out some solid and constant content to keep you occupied on MMN while the weather starts to get a little colder and snow starts to fall.

Here’s the news that came up this week from the Mets’ affiliates in the minors:

Las Vegas 51s

The 51s watched their first playoff run since 2002 end prematurely, but the season continued for Las Vegas shortstop, Ruben Tejada. Mike Baxter, Aaron Harang, and Juan Centeno were the first round of call-ups following the end of their seasons in the PCL last Monday. The club waited to re-call Tejada until last Tuesday to delay his free agency another year. He doesn’t look to be a big part of the future, but if a couple days can buy the organization another year of control…why not, right?

Rafael Montero was also named to Baseball America’s MiLB All-Star team.

Binghamton Mets

The B-Mets ran into the Trenton Thunder at the wrong time, as their divisional foe went undefeated in the postseason on their way to an Eastern League title. Closer Jeff Walters spent a small amount of time with Las Vegas to bolster their ‘pen for the rest of the playoffs. However, manager Pedro Lopez got his first call to the Show, joining the MLB staff for the remainder of the season. Wally Backman‘s invite never came.

St. Lucie Mets

St. Lucie already has Hansel Robles, Cam Maron, and Aderlin Rodriguez heading to the Arizona Fall League, but one more pitcher will be on his way. Reliever Cody Satterwhite will be joining them soon on the Scottsdale Scorpions. A former draft pick of the Detroit Tigers, Satterwhite spent time in Indy Ball this season before signing with the Mets.

Savannah Sand Gnats

Obviously, the biggest news coming out of Savannah was their championship victory against the Hagerstown Suns. After Jacob Lugo evened the series at one game a piece on the road, the Gnats leaned on two great pitching performances from Gabriel Ynoa (recap here) and Steven Matz (recap here) to close the deal.

At the time of the initial announcement, the Mets said two additional pitchers would be added at a later date. Satterwhite is one of them, so we’re just waiting on the last hurler to be added to the roster before it’s complete for the Amazins.

Satterwhite, a 26-year-old from Jackson, Mississippi, was taken twice in the MLB draft before he signed. In 2005, the Cleveland Indians picked him in the 37th round out of Hillcrest Christian High School, but he opted to attend the University of Mississippi. That decision paid off; he was taken in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Detroit Tigers. His time in the Detroit organization was a rocky one, as he suffered multiple setbacks due to shoulder issues and a decrease in velocity. He didn’t play professional ball in 2012 following getting released by the Tigers in February of that year.

To start 2013, Satterwhite hooked on with Sioux City in Indy Ball, putting together a 2-1 record, 0.65 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts in 27.2 innings pitched (19 appearances). He joined the Mets organization midway through the season, being assigned to High-A St. Lucie. He appeared in 16 more games for the Mets, going 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and 23 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched.

The 50.1 combined innings he’s thrown this season are the most in his professional career, and the most since he tossed 49.1 frames in 2009 with Double-A Erie in the Eastern League. I’ll be interested to see how he fares with some extra work before the winter officially hits and we’re forced to wait until spring for more baseball.

St. Lucie 17, Palm Beach 1

Do not be alarmed…you are not dreaming. This actually did happen. Noah Syndergaard was responsible for stifling the Palm Beach bats with some superb pitching while the St. Lucie offense combined for sixteen hits and a crooked seventeen runs.

So let’s give Syndergaard his time in the sun here. This young man seems to be pitching with a chip on his shoulder every time he takes the mound… I almost feel like he is angry at Toronto for trading him and he is setting out to be an ace-caliber pitcher – which is fine by me. He followed up a string of great starts with yet another dominating performance. He allowed just one run off four hits and a walk across seven innings, where he struck out seven and is quickly becoming one of my favorite prospects in our entire organization.

Syndergaard retired 15 consecutive batters after allowing a leadoff double in the first. He allowed just two runners on base through the first six innings. If you were to take away the seventh inning from this start, he would have allowed one hit and zero runs over six innings with six strikeouts to boot. If you’re not impressed by the Synder man’s recent stretch of pitching, you might need to try a new sport. This is his fourth consecutive start lasting at least six innings and allowing one run or less.

A pitcher always has an easier day with run support, though, so a lead that widened to 16-0 at one point must have helped his cause. Every starter except Aderlin Rodriguez (0-for-6, yeesh) had a hit, and all but two had an RBI. Matt Reynolds was a god of baseball war at the plate, where he had three hits and five RBIs. Cam Maron also had a nice day at the ballpark, calling a great game and driving home two runs. St. Lucie was 8-for-24 as a team with RISP.

Final tip of my hat here goes to T.J. The next batter, Kennys Vargas, unfortunately came through for the Miracle with an RBI single for the first run of the game.

By looking at the stat line alone, Syndergaard allowed eight hits and two walks, which looks a little worrisome. However, he stranded nine of those ten and danced out of danger all evening. While six innings pitched was once a career high for Syndergaard, he has now strung together three straight outings of at least six innings and no more than one earned run allowed in each. He has also walked a maximum of two batters per start in the same span as well. He dropped his ERA down to 2.90 as he has looked to have settled down nicely in the FSL.

It all fell apart for St Lucie in the seventh inning, however, after Syndergaard’s departure. Pedro Feliciano yielded singles to the first two batters he faced and a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases. Feliciano then gave up consecutive sacrifice flies to make the score 3-0. Chasen Bradford came in relief of Feliciano and didn’t fare much better. Bradford gave up three hits and two runs in the inning, including one he inherited from Pedro Feliciano, which put St. Lucie behind 6-0. Third baseman Rylan Sandoval committed two errors in the inning.

St. Lucie’s offense was completely shut down by the Fort Myers pitching staff. St. Lucie scored no runs and only had 6 hits. Their biggest opportunity of the night was in the fifth inning. Travis Taijeron led off the inning with a double, but St. Lucie failed to drive him in. The Mets will look to avoid the series sweep against Fort Myers on Sunday. Tonight’s loss puts them seven games behind first place in the south division.

Tampa 7, St. Lucie 3

Continuing a suspended game from last night, the St. Lucie Mets started the game down a run and never came back, losing to the Tampa Yankees by a final score of 7-3.

Domingo Tapia had the start yesterday, however after pitching one inning, the game was called due to rain and lightning. His day officially ended with the Mets prospect surrendering one run on no hits while walking one. He would take a tough loss in this one, but he technically had a no-hitter going? Yeah…no.

Marcos Camarena came on in relief, or rather to start the suspended game, and had a meltdown in an inning. After allowing five of his six batters to reach base, he was lifted for Estarlin Morel who, after walking in a run, retired the side. In the fourth, Morel was less effective as he served up a two-run bomb to Mason Williams to make it a 6-1 game. Gary Sanchez came up to bat in the seventh against Wanel Vasquez and doubled home the Yankees’ seventh and final run of the ballgame. Not a great day for St. Lucie pitching all around.

The offense wasn’t much too write home about either with the exception of a few moments. Native New Yorker Cam Maron drove home the first St. Lucie run on a two out knock in the fourth. In the top of the sixth, Rylan Sandoval scored from third on a Dustin Lawley RBI groundout. Finally, in the ninth, in a futile attempt at a late inning rally, T.J. Rivera reached on a fielding error with two outs to score Maron and make it 7-3, but that would be all she wrote.

The other game of Wednesday’s double-header and series finale with the Tampa Yankees was postponed.

Welcome to the first post in a weekly series called “Who’s Hot, Who’s Not,” in which we look at the hottest and coldest players in the Mets’ minor league system from the past week. Here’s a look back at the week that was. NOTE: Stats are from April 20 through April 27.

Who’s Hot

Jayce Boyd 1B (SAV)- Boyd has come out of nowhere this season, hitting .405/.490/.583 through his first 22 games with two homers and nine doubles, the same number he had in 54 games with the Brooklyn Cyclones last year. With Brooklyn, Boyd hit just .239/.320/.368 with five home runs. The 2012 sixth-round pick batted .500/.581/.769 with a home run and four doubles.

Kevin Plawecki C (SAV)- Boyd and Plawecki have led the offensive charge for Savannah this season and are two big reasons why they have gotten off to such a hot start. The power-hitting Plawecki already hit four homers through his first 21 games, including one last week. Las week, Plawecki batted an impressive .440/.483/.680 with three doubles to go along with his home run.

Rafael Montero RHP (BIN)- Montero has been terrific thus far for Binghamton, putting up a 1.99 ERA in 27.2 innings and a ridiculous 11.6 K/9 rate, having some Mets fans calling for a promotion to the big leagues. While that is unlikely, Montero may soon earn a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas. This past week, Montero, in two starts, allowed two runs in 11 innings while striking out 14 and walking just two.

Honorable Mention: Domingo Tapia RHP (STL)- It was almost a toss-up between Rafael Montero and Domingo Tapia. Both put up very impressive numbers this week. Tapia tossed 12.2 innings in two starts, allowed four runs (only two earned) and struck out 11. He has a 2.51 ERA in 25.1 innings over five starts.

Who’s Not

Brandon Nimmo OF (SAV)- After a very hot start, Nimmo has gone ice cold, hitting well under the Mendoza line at just .091 over the last week. His .286 On-Base Percentage and .182 Slugging Percentage are also far worse than what we saw earlier in the season from Nimmo. Hopefully he can turn it around soon.

Cam Maron C (STL)- Maron also started off the season well, hitting .286 through ten games but has struggled since. His batting average has now dropped below .240. This week, he hit .154/.1185/.154.

Collin McHugh RHP (LAS)- McHugh has allowed only one earned run through 18 innings this season before two bad starts this week. Over 12.1 innings, McHugh got walloped for 20 hits and nine runs allowed, striking out just seven. This kind of week happens to every Vegas pitcher, and isn’t something to be concerned about unless it carries on over his next few starts.
