Who do you think will make it to the big league bullpen first: Jack Leathersich or Jeff Walters? Here’s what some of our guys had to say: John Bernhardt: Jeff Walters had a breakout season for the B-Mets in Binghamton. Used exclusively in the closer’s role, Walters was lights out setting single season and career save marks for Binghamton. His 38 saves also led the Eastern League and was the second highest all-time saves total […]
Andy Martino of the Daily News is reporting that the Mets have given pitching coach Dan Warthen a two-year contract, according to front office sources. Earlier today, Sandy Alderson confirmed that all coaches the coaches were being retained, but Warthen is the only one to receive a multi-year deal. Warthen has been the Mets’ pitching coach since Jerry Manuel took over for Willie Randolph in 2008, but has worked on a series of one-year deals, […]
There was an interesting piece on FanGraphs a couple days ago about Vic Black — titled “Vic Black, Closer In Waiting?” You can already guess what the subject matter dealt with and it was certainly a good read. They jump-started it with a curious quote from LaTroy Hawkins, who spoke about Black: “Some guys have late life on the ball,” the 40-year-old Mets reliever Hawkins said. “Sometimes I play catch with him and he has, like, double life. The ball […]
Kristie Ackert of the Daily News is reporting that LaTroy Hawkins, undoubtedly one of the best free agent signings of the season for the Mets, has already had discussions with the front office to return in 2014. Hawkins was already having a solid season for the Mets – serving as the team’s setup man. But it wasn’t until closer Bobby Parnell was lost to a neck injury, that the veteran righthander truly shined for the […]
Well, with the Mets wrapping up their regular season schedule with a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday at Citi Field, it’s officially the off-season. In the last official week of the season, Wilfredo Tovar made his MLB debut, and immediately made an impact against the Phillies and Cliff Lee. Meanwhile, Baseball America began rolling out their top prospect countdowns per league, and Dominic Smith was tabbed as the fourth-best prospect in the GCL. […]
Updated 9/29 Andy Martino reports: Terry Collins and the Mets do not have a deal yet for a contract extension, but they are very close. People familiar with the negotiations told the Daily News to expect a news conference midday Monday to announce a two-year, approximately $2 million deal for the manager (that’s a raise from the approximately $800,000 per year he was earning under his previous contract). Also, the News was first to report […]
Warning !! What you are about to see is an exercise in futility. What if Johan Santana didn’t blow out his surgically repaired shoulder again during Spring Training ? What if Shaun Marcum pitched anywhere near the numbers on the back of his baseball card ? What if Matt Harvey didn’t injure his elbow – possibly requiring Tommy John Surgery ? What if David Wright didn’t tweak his hamstring and missed seven weeks of the […]
Any franchise, any team, any general manager, any manager plays the game to win. That’s as it should be. Every day the Mets put on the uniform and take the field, I’m pulling for them to win. That’s the case in the first week of the season and the last. There is no escaping the altered dynamics during the final month of a baseball season when your team has no realistic chance of post season play. Two kinds of […]
According to Adam Rubin on Twitter, Mets closer Bobby Parnell has lost 30 pounds since he began suffering from the herniated disk. However, Collins also added that team doctors believe that Parnell will be ready to go by Spring Training. The hard-throwing righthander had surgery to repair the herniated disk in his neck on September 10. The procedure was performed by renowned spinal surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins in California who has treated more professional athletes with spinal injuries […]
